A word from Al Di La
Al Di La is a neighborhood restaurant serving simple, authentic Northern Italian cuisine. At Al Di La we strive to create a seasonally-inspired menu comprised of fresh, mainly local ingredients. We are an owner-operated establishment serving both lunch and dinner.

Some features of Al Di La: handmade pasta selections, fresh daily-baked focaccia bread, delicate desserts prepared on-site, an extensive Italian wine list, a wine bar, and two outdoor patios. Guests also have the choice of enjoying wood-fired pizzette, Italian cheeses, meats, and vegetables to name a few. Join us anytime and prepare to get away, or as 'al di la' translates to mean, prepare to go 'beyond the beyond.'Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Very disappointed with all the main courses. We had out of town guests, and had raved about your restaurant. It was very upsetting. The service was poor, food too salty. Do not know if you are now under new ownership. I would not ever say again , that this is one of my first choices for a neighborhood restaurant. Sorry, but it was a BAD experience."

  • "Disappointing...we liked it better a few years ago. The menu is pretty limited and lacking Italian basics, Northern Italian and just. Italian."

  • "You all did a wonderful job with our meal last night. Our server was tip top and wasn't too intrusive. Thank you again we will be back again."

  • "I seem to go 6 months between visits to Al Di La and I every time I return, I kick myself for not eating there more frequently. Everything is always delicious. The ricotta gnocci is always my go-to and is always delicious. Other delicious items: the duck taglitelle, mixed olives, pork chop, and tomato soup. Now that the weather is beautiful again, I hope to eat here more often and take advantage of the outside seating! Only negatives came from the bar (watered down drinks) and the service. This is the first time we've had poor service. Our waiter often forgot about us, requiring us to ask for items multiple times. We were served the pork without knives and with no one on the floor for a long time, we couldn't flag anyone down to get them."

  • "The food is outstanding. I thought service was marginal to good. When we arrived, it took awhile to be greeted and a party of 2 who came in behind us was greeted and seated in front of us. Our server did not seem to enjoy serving us. He did the mini;mum. I would return as food and ambiance of restaurant was excellent and hope service would be better next time."

  • "This was a girl's night out and Al Di La was great! Our waitress gave a great wine recommendation, new the different varieties and new what would be great with all kinds of food. Love this place!"

  • "We've dined at Al Di La several times and really liked it. This time, however, we felt that everything was just okay. Our server was busy with several tables but managed to keep our water and wine glasses filled, but the food seemed rather tasteless and boring. And, unfortunately, both my husband and I had upset stomachs later that night. Perhaps the mussels we both ate? All in all, not a great experience. We probably won't dine at Al Di La again."

  • "A year ago we really enjoyed our dining experience here. This year it was better yet! Don't pass up any special dishes prepared by the chef!"

  • "This was my third experience in 6 months with a group of 3-4. Excellent on all counts for this size group - the "energetic" noise level tends to discourage philosophic conversation, so mostly we rave over the olive oil, the fish specials and the wine!"

  • "This is our favorite spot for a romantic evening out, but is an equally great place to go with friends. Be prepared to drop some coin, as it's not cheap (but worth it!)."

  • "Since moving to Charleston from the NE 2-years ago we've been on the hunt for a good Italian Restaurant. Although we enjoyed our meal @ Al Di La, the service and food were not noteworthy to plan another visit. Everything was OK but nothing special."

  • "Good food nicely prepared but about as cheery and fresh inside as your grandfather's cellar - well, granted, without the dust and dank.Needs a creative lighting make over."

  • "The menu is fantastic. We were welcomed in and asked our server regarding her recommendations. This is a surefire way to get a great dish. We ordered a pasta that was utterly fantastic. This restaurant is a true gem, and one that everyone should visit. The renovations that were done since our last visit are great as well and really open up the space."

  • "This is a cheerful, friendly place with wonderful food. The pecorino ravioli was FANTASTIC! Cooked exactly right, rich but not too rich, with cauliflower in the cream sauce to lighten it and give it a fresher taste. My friend had the gnocchi and loved it too. And our appetizers (roasted beet salad and carpaccio) were exactly right in both size and flavor. I'll definitely be back again soon."

  • "The Ricotta & Mascarpone Gnocchi with Shrimp is one of the best Italian dishes in Charleston! Be sure to have the Tiramisu for dessert."

  • "Food was awesome! And even in a small restaurant, the staff was very accommodating for our large group. Will definitely go again!"

  • "very nice time. Pork Chop was amazing. Tiramisu was not what I expected, do not order that, too much chocolate for some reason. Did not have taste or texture of tirmisu. really enjoyed our dinner and would go back for sure."

  • "Absolutely awesome! We've searched the city for good Italian food and found it at Al DI LA! Homemade gnocci was some of the best I've ever tasted. Sauce was superb! This is our new best favorite. I only wish it was East of the Cooper."

  • "We hadn't been to Al Di La for a while, and it was great to rediscover it. The food, as we remembered, was excellent, and our waiter was very attentive without being overbearing. We started with a mini-carafe of wine, the beet salad, and then ordered the baked eggplant and the ricotta gnocchi. Fresh, perfectly seasoned and very tasty on all parts. The only downside to dining in the Avondale area is the parking, and it was a cold and rainy night and parking was a nightmare. I think that's why we have avoided the restaurants in this area lately. But this time we took advantage of the complimentary valet parking. No brainer! Kudos to the Avondale association for providing a solution."

  • "Our server was great and the food was delicious;however, the bar staff let us sit at the bar with menus and no drinks. We told them we weren't ordering food just drinks before dinner. Once they knew we weren't ordering they ignored my husband and I"

  • "Everything at Al Di La was amazing! From the appetizer tuna special to the tagliatelle and steak entree. We all loved every bite and were stuffed when we left. The wine selection was great as well. We will most definitely be returning in the near future!"

  • "I visited Al Di La for the first time on Valentine's Day this year. I had heard from multiple sources that this was one of the best 'Date' places west of the ashley, and it did not disappoint! I was also introduced to carpaccio for the first time and loved it. My girlfriend is a huge foodie and claims Al Di La as her favorite Italian restaurant in Charleston!"

  • "Haven't been here in a couple of years until the other night. It still has the great quality it had when it opened and all through the years. You will not be disappointed."

  • "Food was excellent. I had the pesce del giorno, which was snapper and very well-prepared. My husband had duck, which he also enjoyed. We also each had an appetizer: a beet salad and an excellent asparagus risotto. We had a flight of 3 wines, all of which were well selected and delicious, although that made it more difficult to pair with our meals. We worked it out. There was nothing on the dessert menu that was particularly compelling. We ordered cheesecake with berries, but the berries were frozen blueberries. The noise level kept me from rating this outstanding, and because of that I would not call it romantic, but we were able to converse. Service was excellent, as well. We will be back, although at $150 for 2, probably not frequently./"

  • "Make a reservation, this is a must! It's Italian, plan to take your time and enjoy your meal. You will spend a little more than at a chain restaurant for your dinner. It's "Top Notch"! The entire meal was wonderful!"

  • "The place is very nice and the food is excellent, we had a reservation at 8:45 pm and we were seated ASAP. The service is not too great, our waiter seems out of it. I have to keep asking for water because he keeps forgetting to bring me some. Other than that it was delicious and I will definitely will go back."

  • "We ate on a Friday night. It was a good thing we made reservations because the place was packed. House red wine was good. Our waitress was great, We ordered a pate for an appetizer and it was very good. Split a pasta primi,it was fine, but not great. I had a fish entre that was on the heat for a couple minutes too long and was just a bit tough on the outside. Our meal set us back about $100. At that price (only 1 glass of wine and no dessert) I expect something special,"

  • "First, we had a Groupon for this restaurant. We tip on the full amount and usually tip a bit more since so many Grouponers do not- but we have to save where we can. I called to reserve a table and found that Groupons were blacked out due to 2 restaurant weeks. Only one restaurant week was mentioned on the print of the Groupon. In addition, our Groupon did not mention that alcohol did not count toward the total. It was only a few dollars, but Al Di La seems to change their minds for Groupon customers. Also, I noticed non-groupon customers had visibly larger portions of food than we did, despite ordering the large portion. I am sure that if we were paying full price we would have had a better experience. The food tasted great, though."
