A word from Al Di La
Al Di La is a neighborhood restaurant serving simple, authentic Northern Italian cuisine. At Al Di La we strive to create a seasonally-inspired menu comprised of fresh, mainly local ingredients. We are an owner-operated establishment serving both lunch and dinner.

Some features of Al Di La: handmade pasta selections, fresh daily-baked focaccia bread, delicate desserts prepared on-site, an extensive Italian wine list, a wine bar, and two outdoor patios. Guests also have the choice of enjoying wood-fired pizzette, Italian cheeses, meats, and vegetables to name a few. Join us anytime and prepare to get away, or as 'al di la' translates to mean, prepare to go 'beyond the beyond.'Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Our server was very patient & attentive. Ambience was great though my 60+ y.o. mother & aunt both had difficulty reading the menu b/c of the low lighting & menu font but to be honest, this is a common complaint anywhere we go. The appetizers were fantastic: seared yellowfin w/ watermelon & prosciutto (ok) & roasted figs w/ gorganzola wrapped in prosciutto (flavor explosion). Mom was very pleased with the fettuccine bolognese. Aunt got the roasted chicken & said it was most & tender. I got the ricotta gnocchi with shrimp, grape tomatoes & basil which was pretty good. Boyfriend got the duck confit with mushrooms which was moist, tender but a little too earthy for me."

  • "We went to Al Di La for the first time and were delighted. We read the Open Table reviews first and found out there was a elevated table with "love seat" seating. We requested that when we made the reservation and lo and behold they had that table set aside for us. Friendly, attentive and knowledgeable service. Food was great. I had the pork chop and it was juicy, tender and tasty. My Wife had the scallops and they were excellent. With the feel of an in-town old Charleston bistro without the Charleston prices. This will definitely become one of our regular haunts."

  • "Nestled in thriving West Ashley, this was a a wonderful restaurant find! They had a great wine list, wonderful food and and terrific service. The only drawback was that the late dinner (8:15 PM) was a little noisier than I would have liked, but the food and the service made up for it. Best tomato basil soup my wife has ever had. We had a special fish offering with pan seared grouper, a corn, potato, and green bean blend followed by tiramisu that was perfectly prepared! The waitress was outstanding and anticipated every request before it was made!"

  • "always feel a bit rushed to leave at the end of the meal. I understand the need to turn over tables for other guests, but part of the allure is sitting streetside. Asking if I want the check once is sufficient. not every five minutes or so. I will continue to come, the food is second to none. If it weren't for the impatience of the staff to move us through, I would feel like I was in Naples."

  • "We had a fabulous dinner! The duck confit and Tagliatelli were wonderful. The new decor was lovely. We had a special table that was on a raised platform with couch like bench seat and curtains on either side that gave it a very romantic feel. We felt like royalty at our "thrown" table! I have been enjoying Al Di La for years and it just keeps delivering great food!"

  • "It's been a while since we dined at Al Di La, and it was as good a ever. I liked the funky fun renovations in the dining room and the food was delicious. I had the shrimp and tomato gnocchi, sooooo yummy!! And we finished with the riccota cheese cake, to die for!!"

  • "You just cannot beat the food. The service is great but the food is amazing. All pastas are homemade and seasonal dishes like stuffed figs wrapped in prosciutto are divine. Go when you are super hungry! It is worth it to over indulge here!"

  • "I love the menu stays mostly the same. The few times a year I go in I love knowing the dishes are still there and delightful. Happy b-day to me every time."

  • "My last visit here as over 3 years ago and was fondly remembered , this visit won't be . The menu is not inspired , the food was not hot and the restaurant was not busy at the time the food was delivered Overall , go to LANA in Charleston"

  • "A good Northern Italian restaurant in this area is a rare bird. Al Di La is a great example of good Northern Italian food pared with wonderful service. The wait staff is friendly, knowledgable, and efficient. The parking problem has been resolved with an available valet service."

  • "Our food was good. The asparagus risotto with sea scallops i had was delicious. My husband's gnocchi was a bit over cooked to my liking, but the flavor was good. The gelatto was not very good, I would give it a 3 star. Had frozen granules in it, not smooth and creamy. One of my favorite desserts and I have had many times so I know good gelatto."

  • "My wife and I had a great experience, the appetizers, main courses and desserts were wonderful. I had a pork chop that was a s good as any steak I have ever had. We would without hesitation refer others to check it out, you won't be disappointed."

  • "The food at Al DI La is normally good. But the last time I went 6/20/14. I was disappointed. I ordered the Lamb but was served what tasted like and had the texture of beef. The meal was good so I accepted it but I am certain it was not lamb. Lamb as a easy recognized flavor. When I called this to the servers attention he tried to convince me it was lamb. I have eaten enough lamb and beef to know the difference. He said he would tell the chef but I never heard back. I emailed Al Di La but never heard back. I can understand being out of a certain dish. But the customer should be told of the situation and be allowed to decide to accept the substitution or order something else. The lack of a response from AL DI La is very disheartening."

  • "We recently dined with friends and were treated to a fabulous dinner. I had the black sea bass special and it was just delicious!!! And the blueberry cheese cake was perfect followed by a good cup of coffee :) The waiter could have been a little more attentive and friendly, but I guess he was busy."

  • "My husband and I dined at Al Di La for our 5 year anniversary, as it is one of our favorite local spots. They did not disappoint! Our waiter, whom we had before, was friendly and knowledgeable. He even sent us over two house made limoncellos at the end of our meal. It will continue to be our top go-to date night restaurants."

  • "We have been going here for many years since they opened. The food and service have been consistently excellent. The wine list is varied Italian and quite reasonable. My only gripe has always been the lack of beer varieties. They only carry Italian beers, and Italy is not known for their brewing prowess and I have never found a good Italian beer at any restaurant anywhere."

  • "The ambiance was fun and trendy. The food was spectacular in every bite. We came in a little early for our 9:30 reservation and started with a bottle of wine at the bar. The bar tender was very knowledgeable and helped us select a great bottle. After we were seated we ordered a variety of appetizers followed my dinner and dessert. The server was also very knowledgeable and made great suggestions. The only critique I could offer is that I felt a bit rushed. I realize we had a later reservation but having been in the restaurant industry myself for 15 years I would have appreciated my courses being timed a little more smoothly. Again, it was still great service And I know what it's like to be ready to go home. "

  • "We had reservations but table was not ready or did they get us to our table for 30 minutes. Service was too slow. We waited for 15 minutes for wine after we ordered. Wine was not good. Food just OK, eatable. We took 4 guest and would not go again. "

  • "Brought my foodie relatives from NY to dinner here on a Thursday night and they put it on their short list for future visits. Every entree was delicious - melt in your mouth pork chops, light as air gnocchi... and a great wine list, too. Quite reasonable for the quality and quantity of food. Gem of a place"

  • "My hubby and I have been here on different occasions and unfortunately have never been impressed. I decided to try a groupon, have to admit for the very first time I felt the menu they had besides the regular one offered great choices. We ordered off of both menus. The mussels were extremely tasty and was great for bread dipping. As a main course we both ordered the rainbow trout which turned out to be the best. If they keep having entrees like that kudos for them. However, their original menu does leave a lot to be desired. "

  • "Returned to Ah Di La for the first time in 5 years after moving back to Charleston. Was happy to see that the creative menu and the friendly and competent staff hadn't changed. We split a salad, then some steamed mussels, and then each picked a pasta dish from the menu. All were outstanding!"

  • "One of our favorite places to dine... Always great food & friendly service. Branched out & tried the crab ravioli w/ cauliflower cream sauce & it did not disappoint! The gnocchi is the usual- but glad to try something different. Luckily my husband ordered the gnocchi & I got a couple bites. They do a superb job here!!!"

  • "What a great dining experience! Our server (Walter) was very knowledgeable, answered all of our questions and never left us feeling unattended to. The food, from start to finish, was incredible! I had the Ricotta Gnocchi with Shrimp and it was melt in your mouth fabulous! Our party of four each had wonderful meals and we enjoyed our weekday date night! Highly recommend this place!"

  • "Cold food, meal delivered to wrong table twice, charged for a party of 7 instead of 2, manager refused to remove anything from our check. We left humiliated, hungry and livid. Choose somewhere downtown or in Mount P where service is classy and polite. "

  • " First you lost our open table reservation. Then the server brought us the wrong order. Turns out it was supposed to be for the table next to us. Then the server ran the wrong bill on our credit card. Your manager should have come out and apologized but we never saw him/her. Good thing the food was good or the evening would have been a total disaster."

  • "Great food and the service is top notch. We keep going back. The free valet parking (tip encouraged) helps encourage us to go as parking is tough to find in the area. Outside seating is nice, weather permitting. "

  • "Excellent food and our server was great. He was very knowledgeable of the menu and wines. I had the catch of the day (Grouper) and my wife had the Lamb. Would highly recommend both."

  • "Al Di La is a true hidden gem with friendly service, a charming space, and delightful, delicious food. I can't stay away from the fresh salads, duck tagliatelle, and of course- tiramisu! The wine list is not extensive, but has a nice range and incorporates some great buys. The small bar is cozy and usually pleasantly crowded, with an excellent bar menu perfect for sharing. Al Di La is always a pleasant evening out for locals and visitors alike. "

  • "This restaurant is not what it used to be. The food was mediocre and our waiter was awful. He was rude and he did not look at us while speaking to us, but stared off into space. The only reason I could think of why he behaved this way was because of the groupon, since I could see him interacting with other customers in a pleasant way. We didn't special order anything or ask for anything extra. Maybe he had gotten stiffed on the tip by some people who don't tip on the whole amount, but he shouldn't assume everyone will do that. I don't buy groupons that often and this is only the second groupon I have bought for a restaurant. In the future I would be suspicious of any restaurant where you have to present the groupon before you order."

  • "Very much enjoyed our meal at Al Di La. I was glad I read reviews and confirm that parking is a challenge. Recommend the Valet parking. Tables for two, for the most part, are very small but manageable. The food was very good (I recommend the scallops with asparagus as an appetizer!). My lamb was a little disappointing; a little tough. Service was superb, and the noise of larger groups is definitely a minor distraction from the meal. Prices were reasonable for the level and types of food served. I recommend this as a great restaurant and we will be back!"
