Diner Reviews
  • "This was our first time there and we highly recommend making reservations! Even with reservations you will have to wait a bit, but it's worth it. The place is small & tightly packed but everyone is friendly and the food is worth a little bump from the people sitting right behind you. We had appetizers, salad& dinner and it was all delicious. The lemoncillo shot at the end of the meal was also a huge hit. (Ask for the olive oil mix with the bread. Then ask for more bread to finish off the sauce from your meal!) :)"

  • "food was delicious if this is the only reason you go to dine then this is a place for you. Parking is very difficult and be careful if you park in a resident parking spot your ticket will be $40. seating is a little tight so squeeze your tummy with all your might."

  • "We arrived, we ate well, we departed. The service was very good. The restaurant was packed with lively couples and families."

  • "This restaurant has the most tender veal dishes. I have been eating here for my birthday for the past 6 years. It is always fabulous! I love all of them but my favorite is the Veal Valdostona - scallopini layered with prosciutto and mozzarella cheese with artichoke hearts and mushrooms in a marsala wine sauce."

  • "We enjoyed the prompt service. Water and bread right away. Appetizers were good and were served promptly. Entrees were plentiful and delicious. We were time limited (had to catch a train), but thoroughly enjoyed our meal."

  • "The food and service were amazing at Al Dente. Our waitress was super friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. She made the experience great and I loved the sausage cacciatore!"

  • "My sister and I came here before a concert on a Saturday night. We had reservations and were seated just about on time. The host was very friendly and our waitress was awesome! The food was delicious! We were able to share a salad and dinner since the portions were so big! We will definitely return."

  • "Al Dente is a hidden gem on popular Salem Street in Boston's North End. Food, service and atmosphere is always consistently great. Staff is extremely nice, professional and caring and they operate the business with a lot of pride in their work. We love the Eggplant Rollatini appetizer, Caesar salad and any dish such as Pasta with Vodka Sauce or Chicken Saltimbocca. It is located across the street from a couple of more expensive Italian restaurants so the bonus is you get a great view & overall atmosphere of the area even when waiting in line for a table but you don't have to pay much higher prices for the same quality great food. Hint: Make reservations."

  • "Went to Al Dente on a Friday night--Michael (the host) was quick to seat us, and the service was outstanding all night. Pros: Outstanding food and service Generous pours of wine Very fair prices They're strict about reservations (which, as long as you plan ahead, can be a plus) Cons: Was fairly loud You may bump elbows with the table next to you (it is a tight space)"

  • "Like many other North End restaurants, very small, very noisy, very tasty food, very friendly, good service, homemade pasta available. This one has consistently been a good choice and a favorite of ours for years. One of the closest to the "Parcel 7" parking garage at 136 Blackstone Street on the Boston side of the Greenway, and they will validate your parking ticket so you pay only $1 for up to two hours, or $3 for up to three hours, instead of the regular $16 or more."

  • "Husband & I had a delicious meal at Al Dente Sat. evening. I chose Chicken Marsala & husband had Al Dente Special. Yummy. Lisa our waitress was wonderful, even lent my husband her glasses so he could read the menu. Love that girl. Slight glitch with on line reservations they had us for 3PM & we had made them for 5PM, we were lucky there was an available table. Recommend making a copy of reservation confirmation."

  • "Thankful that I found a spot to eat in North End.... We were greeted right away for our 9 o'clock reservation, however we waited until 930 to be seated. While waiting they seated several (over 5... Lost count) pairs of two. Knowing they needed to put two tables together they should have planned for it. Overall decor was simple. The tile floors could use some remodeling. Other than that service was great and the food delish."

  • "My girlfriend and I went to Al Dento two night ago and could not have been more please with the small, but awesome family run place. You will feel at home here and just wait until you try the food. The portions are big and they also pack a big taste. Five stars all the way for this place!"

  • "Although they didn't have our Open Table reservation (we made it 2 hours before our arrival), we were seated right away before the dinner rush. Wait staff made great recommendations. Great fried calamari and variety of main dishses. Generous portions."

  • "We stopped here for lunch. The menu offered salads, entrees & sandwiches. The food & service were excellent. Definitely would recommend eating here!"

  • "Every dish that was served tasted great. The vodka sauce is probably one of the best, if not the best I have had at a restaurant. The service was great, food was awesome and for the area and the prices were very reasonable. I would definitely go again and recommend this place to anyone."

  • "We were 7 people for lunch with a reservation; the host would not seat four who arrived first (hot day, not a good call). Then we were very packed in although that was the exception for this table, right against the front window (backs to it), as the other tables seemed comfortable. Assuming no one had to get up for any reason, the food was great, the waitress very cool and we had a good time. So, yes, would go there again but not with a group unless I saw how we were going to be seated."

  • "This restaurant is very small but that is what is charming about it. Very loud with people eating and having fun! We enjoyed that but if you are looking for a quiet dinner this is not the place. If you want some excellent homemade pasta and great service this is the pace."

  • "We wanted to find an Italian restaurant with a family feel. We found it here at Al Dente. My puttanesca was fantastic and the butternut ravioli as an appetizer was so mouthwatering delicious that we wanted to lick the plate. My husband had the cannelloni with the cream sauce was good but very rich. We had a delightful time with this family. A wonderful experience and recommended for a good Italian dinner."

  • "I ordered the seafood dish without pasta and they were more than happy to accommodate. The waitress even came back to check and make sure that they didn't give me pasta once the dish arrived. Fabulous food and great service!"

  • "Had heard so much about the Boston Italian restaurants that we were a bit disappointed. The Ceasar salad for two was enough for three (or four) and a bit bland. We shared the gnocci with red sauce and added veal. The red sauce was average and the veal was tender but nothing that we could not get at our own neighborhood Italian restaurant. It looked like their chicken dishes were more imaginative but if we are ever back in Boston we shall probably try another spot."

  • "We come from a family of outstanding Italian cooks and this food rivaled theirs! Everyone was very pleasant, our waitress, Lisa, was superb, and the food was outstanding. The sauces were flavorful and the marinara was thick (not watery) and perfectly seasoned! We will be back the next time we are in time."

  • "There is a plethora of restaurants in the North End, most with big lines of people waiting outside. Al Dente takes reservations, which was nice, as we were seated within 20 minutes of our reservation. The service was friendly and efficient. The food was very good - not gourmet, but well-prepared traditional Italian. I had the shrimp and scallops in Vodka sauce, which was delicious. We also had the sautéed calamari, which was tender and flavorful. Nice North End experience!"

  • "Had dinner with a friend here. It had very good reviews on Yelp which turned out to be true. Not a fancy restaurant, but definitely had the flavor of the north end. I had the lobster ravioli that was delicious and my friend had the muscles which she said were great. She loved the sauce. I would definitely eat here again."

  • "We LOVE this place. It has become our family go-to when we crave a classic North End Italian experience. Our two young children love the meatballs, and we love the house made fusilli and their vodka sauce. They make a GREAT marinara, too. Most of all, they make you feel so welcome. It's the kind of neighborhood Italian I grew up going to with my Italian grandfather. No frills, just outstanding food and service."

  • "We were a party of 7 that located this restaurant on Open Table. Our selection was later validated by a Local. We were seated immediately upon arrival even with an additional person in our party. Our Server was patient with us and helped us with our selections. We all had different entrees which were all very well prepared in rather large portions. Would return."
