A word from Akiko's Restaurant & Sushi Bar
The quality of our sushi is attributed to a one-of-a-kind combination of fresh ingredients, coupled with
26 years of experience and unique preparation techniques. "Akiko" means “autumn child; iris, bright
and light” in Japanese. When entering our space guests will see rustic-earth tones, imported rosewood
floors, exposed brick walls, and varied place settings on unique oak tables. The atmosphere ensures
that our customers get a unique dining experience. Our charming, boutique restaurant is conveniently
located in the Financial District in downtown San Francisco. We provide the Japanese staple in the area,
serving modern, yet traditional Japanese fare.

Diner Reviews
  • "It's hard to spot the restaurant from the street and doesn't make the greatest first impression, but the staff are friendly, the tables are well spaced, and the dishes are delicious. The chefs behind the sushi bar are doing a great job!"

  • "...especially for the price, and the fact that the tables are crammed together. So now were still looking for "our favorite" sushi restaurant!"

  • "Akiko's is an indescribable experience. Every time we just ask them to bring us their picks. The tastes are out of this world and the service impeccable. If you go this route you will have an unbelievable taste experience, but you can't be afraid to spend some money. It's well worth it! The only downside - all other sushi is just ok now that we've had Akiko's."

  • "Akikos is high quality sushi prepared with care by their attentive sushi chefs. A bit expensive but reasonable for what is on pat with the finest sushi in SF or NY."
    Dined on 3/24/2014
  • "Although I enjoyed it, I thought this time, they were not as attentive to us and I felt like the whole experience was lacking..."

  • "Had a wonderful, memorable meal here. Everything was presented beautifully and tasted delicious. One word of warning--there's no sign for this place, so you have to make sure to note the street address."

  • "My friend and I did the Omakase menu. Fantastic from start to finish but the absolute highlights where Beni Toro Uni Kobe Beef sushi (If beef can be called that) Monk Fish Liver"

  • "Finally, a decent Sushi restaurant in the financial district. Do not believe the hype though, this place is good. It is not excellent or anything the write home about. The prices are very high for what you get, arguably too high. The fish is fresh and tastes unique with special seasonings of the rice and fish which are far from traditional. It is worth a try, but may not fit everyone's flavor profiles or budget. Cooked food is below par for the price you pay, Saba was overcooked and the Tempura batter is missing the light crispiness of tempura. I would go back, probably not on my dime."
    Dined on 3/17/2014
  • "Fish was fresh but ran out of saba even though I went at 5:30pm. O/w the fish was very fresh."
    Dined on 3/17/2014
  • "This was the greatest sushi experience I've ever had. The quality of the fish is unsurpassed, and the fact that they take "standard" rolls and make them so unique was a refreshing experience. I'd recommend this place to anyone."

  • "Food, atmosphere, and service were great. Still thinking about the Forty-Niner roll, fantastic!"

  • "If you can do the chefs menu, Go for it! I have sushi all the time, not only did it melt in my mouth, got to try several fish that I had never had. Just a great little place, also to grab a dinner. Don't get confused, this one is on Bush not madon"

  • "I came in not sure what I wanted, so I asked the chef if I could just have a piece of nigiri of a large amount of the specials menu. He said that would be fine, and went ahead to prepare an excellent meal! He gave me one or two pieces at a time that he chose to fit together best and it was all fantastic. The fish was well-prepared and delicious, and the variety was fantastic."

  • "One of the best Sushi experiences we have ever had! Every piece of sushi expertly prepared and presented. Staff extremely helpful and professional. Truly a gem in a city famous for food. We give it the highest recommendation. Not to be missed. Reserve in advance."

  • "For outstanding quality and variety, Akiko's stands atop the sushi mountain in San Francisco. Exotic varieties from all over the globe delivered within days of being caught make Akiko's a destination sushi restaurant. Omakase is the way to go...allow the kitchen to delight you with the chef's best selection. One of the best plates of food I have ever experienced was delivered at Akiko's: toro slices from true Hamachi (farmed japanese yellowtail), Albacore and australian sea trout (steelhead by CA standards).....sashimi heaven. And, their marinated salmon eggs are the best I have ever had in addition to the sea urchin from Hokkeido. I cannot do the food justice by description...just know that you will be very pleased."

  • "Finding great sushi is hard as many places receive great reviews, but are nothing more than fancy rolls topped with an aioli. Akiko's is nothing like that. Fresh and flavor fish that does not require anything to mask its flavor. The only complaint I have is the rice. Nigiri is one of my favorite ways to enjoy Sushi as great rice compliments great seafood. At Akiko's they opted not to use traditional sushi rice, which affected both the texture and enjoyment of the nigiri. Though my wife and I did not enjoy the rice, the fish was excellent and a meal that we look forward to repeating."

  • "I am just visiting so I was not sure of the timing. I came 10 minutes early. My appointment was 11:30 - when they open. I was tired from the walk and would just like to sit. They will not allow it. A lady was sitting at the bar. I thought she was a cusotmer. Their reason of not letting me sit down is they are not ready and people will see if I sat down and think they are open. The hostess is sitting down like she is a customer. The hostess is snooty. She asked if I have reservation and from her reaction she wished I did not. The wait staff is nicer. The shrimp tempura is ordinary but the sushi and sashimi are top quality."

  • "The reviews were mixed on Akiko's, but we're die-hard sushi buffs so wanted to check this restaurant out for ourselves. It is tucked away on Bush street, and does not have a sign out front, so you'll need to find it just based on its address. It is clean and has a cozy feel given that it's small and in an old building. The service is fantastic, our water was always topped off, and they were quick when we asked for anything. The food was okay, but not memorable. The noise level, on the other hand, is something you won't forget. I'm always willing to pay more for ambiance. Unfortunately, you'll pay more for this place, but you won't be able to enjoy a conversation with your group."

  • "It's a great sushi spot. It's even more amazing because the choices in the area are not great with a few exceptions. It's not formal enough for a real business lunch but if works to impress a lunch date (business or personal) if you want sushi. for dinner it's also very good, especially if you are only two. I have been a few times and lunch today impressed me. we ordered uni and ankimo: perfect. we had three different types of salmon: all were delicious. Fresh shrimp was great and the head fried just right. they recommended some other fish because it was fresh and it was great. they served our food in an order that made sense instead of just bringing out a bunch of sushi together, giving our meal a great pace. highly recommended."

  • "very pricey but worth it. There are plenty of expensive sushi bars that leave you feeling like you paid too much. At Akiko's you pay a lot, but feel like you got your money's worth."

  • "Had reservations for two Saturday evening. While I thought the food was delicious, the service is lacking. The female who was assisting our waiter at times was great, but unfortunately he had no sense of urgency. At one point one of the wait staff apologized to us because she needed to split our table to seat another party of two (within 2 inches of us) because "some people are taking longer to eat and our reservations are getting backed up." Please don't blame your diners, it's the waiter that's holding everyone up. In all honesty, we should have been out of there in 45 minutes. Instead it was an hour and a half, most of the time waiting for service."

  • "I'm in heaven... I mean, I'm at Akiko's. How is it that we ate everything on the menu, yet we are still light on our feet? Allen was the perfect host introducing us to sashimi fish varieties from around the world that changed our lives. Don't forget to have a glass of Drops of Dew sake."

  • "The restaurant was very nice and wait staff friendly, but the entree we got was way too salty. The sushi rolls were good albeit pricier than normal."

  • "Went for lunch on a weekday and sat at the sushi bar. Chef prepared good a la carte new-style sushi and fish quality was high. I really wanted to like it but their service was really lacking and the chef (his co-workers at the bar included) was pretentious and think they are god's gift for sushi-lovers. Having had sushi at Yasuda and a few other joints in New York, I have to say they are not quite there yet."

  • "Food is great but I do not recommend getting seated in the window corner by the hostess station."

  • "Our server was very very very cold. It was really weird. It's almost like the delicious great quality of sushi was really bad because of his cold quiet vibe. Not friendly at all."

  • "The sushi here was some of the best I've had in SF. We ordered agedashi tofu to start, which was light and flavorful, and then each ordered the 6 piece nigiri tasting. The fish was so fresh it melted in my mouth. The seared salmon was absolutely outstanding. We also ordered three rolls, all of which were great, and made for a perfect amount of food. The only thing that was odd was that the servers seemed a bit distracted, but the food more than made up for it. Excellent wine selections, too."

  • "Without a doubt this has been the best opentable find to date. I am grateful to have gotten a table to this popular restaurant. The food was absolutely awesome. I only wished we had paced ourselves to leave more room for sushi. The tempura was perfect but the sushi was simply melt in your mouth sushi. We asked the chef to create a mix for us and every piece was perfect. Service was great. This is a tiny place. I cannot imagine going with more than a table for 4."

  • "The sushi is delicious. However, they were out of kampachi and I would have liked to have made my own choice of a substitute rather than having them just give me something else. The wine list needs some work but then sake would probably be the better choice."

  • "This review is based on the chef's menu. The fish served at Akiko is really stellar. Besides Kappa in Japan Town, it's probably the best sashimi I've had in SF over 20 years. The focus of the chef's menu really is the fish; so if you're looking for more variation, you may not find it. But the fish is soooo good. They do some interesting things like a slight char on some of the nigiri rice, which added a nice depth. One criticism, though, is the nigiri rice didn't hold together well; maybe it was an off night. The final bite was a Wagyu beef and truffle nigiri. Yum, yum, yum! Awesome way to end the meal!"

  • "By far the best Sushi I've had in San Francisco although it's somewhat pricy. Tempura (appetizer) here was better than any I've had in the US. Uni was melt in mouth. Bluefin tuna belly was expensive but amazing. Liked that they didn't bring all the food together (like many other sushi places do) on a single plate. They seemed to try to sequence the food in the correct order for best experience."

  • "A totally positive dining experience at this innovative restaurant. Fried foods, grilled foods, noodles, rice bowls and a vast sushi/sashimi selection make up the menu. A strong point is the ability for one person to order an omakase and another to order a la carte at the same table. It's rare for a party to be able to share a strong omakase side by side with an order of tempura and chicken teriyaki. The sub-$100 price to be fairly reasonable and a good way to sample what the restaurant is capable of offering. The $10 corkage was pretty sweet."
