A word from Akiko's Restaurant & Sushi Bar
The quality of our sushi is attributed to a one-of-a-kind combination of fresh ingredients, coupled with
26 years of experience and unique preparation techniques. "Akiko" means “autumn child; iris, bright
and light” in Japanese. When entering our space guests will see rustic-earth tones, imported rosewood
floors, exposed brick walls, and varied place settings on unique oak tables. The atmosphere ensures
that our customers get a unique dining experience. Our charming, boutique restaurant is conveniently
located in the Financial District in downtown San Francisco. We provide the Japanese staple in the area,
serving modern, yet traditional Japanese fare.

Sushi, service, selection and overall quality of this place was spot on and the highest I've seen in a long time. No sign outside and it's a little hidden, but that was nice. Many people turned away at the door wo reservations, so make one if you can!

Akiko's was absolutely delicious and an overall great dining experience. The fish was some of the freshest I've ever had. I would say come here for the sashimi and nigiri. The rolls were good too, but to really reap the benefit, it's great to taste the fish on its own. In terms of atmosphere, it is a really small restaurant, so the tables are pretty close to each other. However, that didn't get in the way of my experience at all. I could still easily hear and talk to my dining partner. Our waiter was also great. Overall - YES.

A little pricey (~$125 per person for 2 omakases and 2 additional rolls), but we were celebrating a birthday so it was well worth the money! Restaurant was actually pretty small, about 15 people at tables and about 6 at the bar, so we made reservations a few weeks in advance. The food was of very high quality and extremely fresh--highly recommend for special occasions!

Clearly there has been some kind of change since my last visit, as the menu is smaller. The 49er Roll is still amazing but what kind of sushi restaurant doesn't have gyoza? Really?!? Now, they've made go look for another place that has gyoza.

My husband and I came here to celebrate his birthday. It is a very small and quiet sushi bar. Not a place to go if you want a vibrant bar scene. We loved it as it gave us the opportunity to have a conversation. The staff went above and beyond making me vegetarian food which I really appreciated since my husband is the only one who eats fish.

Hard to find as it is currently within a building under a construction site, so you can't see the name of the restaurant or the building number as it is surrounded by construction panels. Good variety of sashimi and sushi but ridiculously expensive for what you are getting. Definitely not value for price! Not kid friendly and too noisy.

My second time coming here for lunch, and I would definitely come again! I've tried nearly all the sushi rolls, and just about all of them will redefine the meaning of sushi for you! With that said, my personal favorite is the unagi-ku. During my next visit, I will try the sashimi/nigiri.

I made a reservation for one approximately two hours before lunch time because of reviews on Trip Advisor. I was greeted and seated by two very nice hostesses. I saw many people turned away because there was literally no room and they didn't have reservations. The place is small - I would think it can only seat about 40-50 people. I had a nigiri 6 piece sample and the Maki specialty roll with a Pinot Noir. The presentation was flawless and the food very good. I commented to the sushi chef that one of my pieces seemed "fishy" - I didn't mean it was spoiled or bad, it was just not my favorite. He replaced it with a striped sea bass that was perfect. This was a recommendation from a "local" of where to find good sushi. Highly recommend.

The title of this review says it all. There were atleast 6 things on my list of desired items that "they were out of". It was so bad I had to literally ask what they "did" have. Ended up paying $20 for 2 small Uni because their regular $9 SF one was obviously "sold-out" Never going here again. Word of advice guys, if you're gonna run out of everything don't put it on the menu.

The mediocre quality Americanized Japanese food did not deserve the prices they charged. The hostess was not friendly at all when we first walked in and then asked us leave as soon as we finished eating and drinking as if there was a designated time slot for each table. I would not recommend this place. If you are desperate, I'd say go to the other Akiko around the corner from there. The food is the same quality, but just cheaper. I'm never going back to this place.

I went to Akiko based on several online reviews. Overall, I was disappointed. We went for lunch and got seated ahead of our reservation time, which was nice. It was very cramped feeling and very noisy. They were already out of three things listed on the menu (some of my very favorites). What I did order was certainly 'adequate', but when I go out for sushi I expect much better. I would go out of my way to go to Geta Sushi in Oakland in the future.

The food at Akiko happens to be quite good. The service is another matter--poor and not necessarily the fault of the server. The place should reduce the seating by about 40% to avoid having to listen to a neighbor's conversation.

One is the most disappointing dining experience. Starting on the outside as we walked in it smelled of garbage. The restaurant is located next to a dark alley on a very busy street. The seaweed salad was just the kind you can buy at any supermarket. The rolls had much rice and were falling apart The main problem the restaurant didn't have any special something that makes you want to come back They didn't make any effort to be creative or have special sauces. It's a diner for sushi in the busy financial district (which seems like the only reason anyone would go there). After having a meal at Saru sushi full of love and creativity eating at akiko felt in satisfying and sad. If you love good full stay away

This place was turning away people left and right due to its small size. We had a reservation, but got lousy seats and lackluster service. We were seated near the door, not at the bar. The food was good, but the service so spotty, it is hard to give it a higher overall rating.

    OpenTable Diner Since 2002

Miso soup ordinary, nothing outstanding. tempura was a great disappointment, batter soggy, greasy, heavy, brown and not flavorful. They need to change the oil as by after 1:30 pm how many times has the oil been cooked in? 4 pieces of sashimi nicely presented but not extraordinary. Very over rated restaurant. I would recommend they not serve tempura. The sauce was pretty good but for $19, the tempura should've tasted and looked better. Couldn't really differentiate the favors of the various vegetables because the batter was so bad. Presentation looked nice . It was my first long awaited dining experience there for me but probably my last time. Yet, I am not one to waste food, I finished my meal.

This might be the best sushi/sashimi I've had in San Francisco, hand's down. But, the service left a bit to be desired. Although everyone who helped us was very nice, it took more than 15 minutes for the waiter to take our order and the courses (we had the omakase) were spaced too far apart. We will be back, but will sit at the sushi bar next time.

As mentioned on their website, Akiko's fish is more than fresh and suhis are just awesome. I have been too many sushi restaurants in the past including in Tokyo. Compared to many other places, this place rocks for sushis. I cannot say anything about the other few dishes that are available since sushis were so enjoyable and were what we only ordered.

Since my last omakase sushi experience in Seattle, I thought I was never going to find something as comparable. But I was wrong - every dish was beautifully plated like edible art. This isn't a run of the mill sushi boat restaurant. These guys are professionals and shokunin in their craft. Skip the rolls and order everything off the Nama menu. Trust me, it will be worth your while. I can't wait to come back. I swear, I could eat here everyday if I lived in the city!

Had a wonderful omakase dinner on Friday, August 28. The fish was superbly fresh and the variety kept each nigiri special. The presentation was masterful and each piece was explained in detail (origin of the fish and how it was sourced). The itamae (sushi chef) was attentive and tailored the meal to my personal preferences. The evening was not rushed and the type of fish selected progressed from simple, clean flavors to more complex ones and differing textures. An overall excellent dining experience, and would recommend taking a seat at the sushi bar for the best experience.

This has been one of my favorite sushi spots ever since I found it back in 2011. Since then it has been discovered, so be sure and make a reservation as seating is limited. Excellent, fresh ingredients, well prepared and served by an attentive staff. Being a smaller space, it can get a bit noisy, but nothing overbearing. Spicy tuna roll is a must order as is the seared salmon belly, yum!
