A word from Akiko's Restaurant & Sushi Bar
The quality of our sushi is attributed to a one-of-a-kind combination of fresh ingredients, coupled with
26 years of experience and unique preparation techniques. "Akiko" means “autumn child; iris, bright
and light” in Japanese. When entering our space guests will see rustic-earth tones, imported rosewood
floors, exposed brick walls, and varied place settings on unique oak tables. The atmosphere ensures
that our customers get a unique dining experience. Our charming, boutique restaurant is conveniently
located in the Financial District in downtown San Francisco. We provide the Japanese staple in the area,
serving modern, yet traditional Japanese fare.

  • "Akiko's served up the freshest, most delectable sushi I have ever had. I went with a friend who is even more a of sushi lover than I am and he was impressed too. This is sushi on a level I've never experienced before. Everything was outstanding and my taste buds will take me back to Akiko again and again."

  • "Amazing bouquet of flavors!! Each piece was just incredible. Definitely recommend the Ngiri's as well as some of the makis. The 49er was soooo good! Also, the service was quite welcoming and timely. You definitely won't regret coming here"

  • "The food is great..."special" fish pieces are fresh and great tasting! Sake is awesome and staff are wonderful. This is my go to place every time I visit SF!"

  • "I've heard that Akiko's star chef is departing soon, if he has not departed already. Nevertheless, the food is outstanding. One of the best sushi\Japanese restaurants in San Francisco. To my knowledge, reservations are absolutely required (although, if you're reading this, you probably already know that)"

  • "Akiko is very unpretentious. To understand how good Akiko is, one needs to dine where they think is the best raw fish in town and then order the Omakase at Akiko. If you are like me, you will use words such as "lucious" and "ethereal'" to describe the sashimi and most of the sushi the Chef has sent out to you. It is the same with the tempura shrimp heads. My two friends, first timers at Akiko a few days ago, say so as well."

  • "The sushi was incredible. My table opted for the chef selection and we all were blown away! Monkfish liver is a new favorite!! Alan was an incredible server and was extremely helpful with recommendations and overall spectacular service! Easy to miss the restaurant though because there is no sign out front. But great dining experience!"

  • "The fish is so fresh and prepared with expert hands. It will be hard to enjoy sushi elsewhere after Akiko's."

  • "We arrived at our reservation time and were told by a passive aggressive hostess that our table would not be ready for "a long time." 30 minutes later, we were seated and strongly upsold by an inattentive waiter. The sushi was pretty good, but the prices were extremely high for the quality of service/experience. The bathroom was dirty and had clearly not been attended to all night. I would not recommend this restaurant to others or return myself."

  • "Sat at the bar and had the omakase -- it was terrific. The chef/owner served us directly and that made the experience all the better. Price was totally reasonable for that level of service & food (~$105pp). One thing to note: We went on a Monday night, which is a bad night to go to a top-rated sushi place in SF, as the main fish market is closed on Mondays. So food was _terrific_ (but not "epic life changing beyond amazing"). I imagine if you go on Tue - Fri you're going to get the best of the best."

  • "This was my second visit to Akiko. The food is high class sushi, potentially the best in town. Very expensive if you mix and match your selection so be careful. This is what pulled down my overall rating."

  • "Fishes are really fresh, well crafted sushi. Servers are also well trained and makes great recommendations."

  • ""This is the first time I've ever had real good fish" - my dad Took my dad here for a late Father's day dinner and he was very impressed. He's definitely been to quite a few Sushi restaurants and this, by far, is his favorite. I enjoyed it myself. Almost went for the Omakase but decided that we wanted to pick our own fish as well as additional starters which were the Agedashi Tofu and Kampachi Kama that included half of the head. Both were excellent. There was a little bit of a wait for the Kampachi since our waiter didn't tell us until last minute that they were out of the Hamachi Kama. Nevertheless, the dish was worth the wait. All the nigiri/sashimi that we ordered were exceptional. All in all great place. Would definitely come back."

  • "Everything about this sushi restaurant was great. We sat at the bar and had an omakase meal where the sushi chef just kept putting out his choice. The fish was exquisite and wonderfully prepared. The young chefs were fantastic-quick, skilled, with great personality. Extremely high quality fish with several luxurious, uncommon types. This is not the place to go if you want great big California rolls. However, if you want high quality sushi, expertly prepared-this is the place. They also have a nice sake menu and were very helpful in choosing sake and fish pairings. For the quality of the meal, the price wasn't bad (under $400 for two, including three small bottles of excellant sake)."

  • "Akiko's is a must for sushi lovers. The fish is fresh with great variety. The chefs are always inventive. The best advice I can give is to not even look at the menu but let the chef prepare his recommended choices. I have NEVER been disappointed. Simply said, "WOW"."

  • "Superb. Excellent sushi chef. I left the selection to the waiter. A great selection but I was surprised by a $140 per person check. Ouch. But still awesome Japanese and maybe worth it. It would be a 5 star experience except for the cost of my experience. "

  • "Highly recommend the uni from Hokaido,Japan...very tiny and sweet and slightly pinkish, unlike the ones from Santa Barbara. The torro sashimi is outstanding as well. another delicious dish is the agedofu ...chef did a great job by slicing them into 1/2 thick by 2 inch square...makes them beautiful and refine in presentation and tastes. The vegetable tempura is also very good. They also have tasty and delicious wines and sake."

  • "The service was good and the sushi was out of this world amazing. We asked for a recommendation on some nigiri and our server picked out a couple fantastic pieces for us. Prices are moderate but definitely worth it for the quality of food. "

  • "We got the omakase and the sushi was exquisite. Dish after dish of delicately flavored sushi. Be sure though to let your sushi chef know when you are reaching your max, otherwise the fish will keep coming (and your bill will keep growing). The chefs were friendly and quite knowledgeable about each type of fish. Try to sit at the counter or towards the front half of the restaurant - the bathroom noise towards the back is a little distracting."

  • "this is the worst sushi place. The wood is very untesty, and excpensive! will never recomend anyone to visit this place. The personal is rude, exceprt waitress she was nice. Place is small and line for the restroom is on" peoples heads" "

  • "Akiko's is absolutely delicious. There are 2 menus: one that changes daily and the other that is available all the time. Start from the fresh daily menu and supplement with items from the regular menu if you are still hungry. They do tend to run out of certain items so have some backups in mind. The servers are very helpful in explaining the flavor of each type of fish. For example, if you prefer salmon over tuna let your server know and he/she can recommend something from the fresh menu. It can be a bit pricey for nigiri but the flavors are so worth it. I think it would be best to dine here during typical dinner hours (if you can get a table!) but definitely try to get a larger table along the benches and not the lame one by the bathroom. "

  • "Been going here for years, always great. New menu now and the food was HORRIBLE. Tempura was hard and greasy. Teriyaki was flabby with an overwhelming flavor of anise. Sushi was standard offerings (gone are the interesting sushi rolls that were fresh and tasty) and were stale and tasteless - the "rainbow roll" was so pale and stale that you couldn't even tell the different fish apart. The edamame was still good though. So, so, so sad cuz I loved this restaurant. "

  • "One of the best sushi restaurants I've been to so far in the Bay Area. Service was excellent, water and tea always refilled, checked on just enough but not too often, waiter's recommendations were excellent, very friendly. Food was incredible - had the omakase, tried some new things, tried some standard things, all delicious and fresh. Ambiance was great - easy to have an intimate conversation, but no so quiet that loud laughter felt out of place. Would highly recommend this place - just make sure to get reservations in advance!"

  • "I am so fortunate to have this amazing hole in the wall located right next door to my new office. Though there is no sign on the door, you will need a reservation to get a seat at this in-demand stealth sushi bar. I brought a few clients from Tokyo here, and they confirmed my thoughts that the fish is the freshest I've had outside the Tokyo fish markets. They were blown away. The nigiri is amazing, and every roll is incredible. Specifically, I love their 49er Roll, which has lemons on top giving it a truly unique flavor profile. Pairing the 49er with a spicy tuna roll is a perfect combination. This one really deserves an extra two stars."
