Diner Reviews
  • "We went to AKA Bistro to try out a new-to-us restaurant. Unfortunately the food didn't stack up to other restaurants in the area. We won't be back."

  • "Those of us foodies who live within driving range of Lincoln deeply missed Aka Bistro this winter. We are so fortunate to have delectable, creative cuisine using locally sourced veggies, and the warm welcome of Christian and all who make dining at Aka a relaxed gastronomical adventure."

  • "We had the three course special, which was a soup/mussels with frites/dessert for $22. The soup was fresh cold pea and delicious, a full bowl. Huge bowl of mussels also, and large portion of either creme brule or chocolate mousse for dessert. Outstanding food, large enough quantities to split for lunch. We sat outside on the patio, next to the garden. Lovely."

  • "We had the 7 course chef's menu and it was absolutely marvelous. The artful visual display, the perfect timing, the impeccable service -- it all made for an evening out that was enjoyable and exquisite on every level. The first course was a delicious raw oyster served on a shimmering bed of ice, the ice was in tiny morsels so that it looked like crystals. This was the level of the detail that was consistent throughout the meal. The oysters, and the subsequent clams, cerviche, sashimi, octopus, ribeye (with enoki mushrooms, broccoli and bokchoy) and cheesecake were exquisite. Wonderful blend of japanese and french cooking/presentation. We were awed and still talking about that incredible meal."

  • "My companion and I both enjoyed the option of the $22 3-course lunch special. The pea and edamame soup was creamy, cold and delicious on a hot summer day. The mussels were tender and cooked in a flavorful broth. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive, even taking time to explain in depth the various nuances of the white wines we were considering. I plan to come back soon with my husband -- so that he can experience this lovely taste of France."

  • "The food was not up to prior standards--does not seem the same fine hand is at work in the kitchen, or perhaps just an off night. Server was sweet fellow but seemed new and clueless about how the food was prepared. Menu seems smaller to me, but perhaps memory fails. We all noted that more space was given over in it to drinks than to food."

  • "Delicious Provencal-Asian influenced fare featured in a charming, casual atmosphere. On a lovely summer evening we preferred the outdoor patio where we enjoyed the classic and wonderful Moules et Frites that reminded us of French seaside dinners. The sweet potato tempura topped with seared tuna appetizer was light and crunchy yet rich -- a perfect combination that we'd definitely order again. Attentive, timely service. A delightful meal."

  • "Very good food using local ingredients with an attentive wait staff. The plus is the wait staff is attentive and the minuses is the host/(I think owner) needs to be more involved and the kitchen needs to be attentive. A dish came out of the kitchen with the staff holding it with care because it was hot, placed on the table with a warning it was hot. But wait after the first bite of this supposedly piping hot dish, it was ice cold - did I miss something. The dish was never cooked. The waitress apologized and the bill was adjusted accordingly. If the dish did not taste good, fine maybe there should be no visit but an unfinished dish there should have been a visit and more effort from management. Passed off as oops does not make it."

  • "Everything was good except for one appetizer. I was about to order the kobe dumplings when the waitress said that they were almost out and were going to substitute a fois gras - duck dumpling instead. I know that "specials" tend to be priced higher than menu items, but figured that these would not be more than $20, when the kobe dumplings were $15. Both the price ($23 - not known until bill came) and the dumplings were huge disappointments. I expected dumplings to be doughy along the lines of peking raviolis. Instead the small amount of albeit tasty filling arrived inside a fried wonton skin. We also had the Hawaiian Poke appetizer, which is the best. Like the new menu instituted with the reopening."

  • "Unique, seasonal, interesting cuisine! Great care is clearly taken in the presentation and quality and it shows! We did the seven course chef's tasting and experienced a variety of different flavors and combinations that we greatly enjoyed. Interesting wine list, and mostly great service! The patio is great for dining - makes the atmosphere quite enjoyable on a wonderful summer evening! Even cooler: Other people with the tasting had some different dishes, and even some same ones were plated differently! My one quip: Our waiter was wonderful, as were most of the more experienced staff, but some of the junior staff that helped out looked like they were either lost or smirking/unhappy. It looks out of place when most of the staff is SO good!"

  • "The food and service were excellent. Our waitress, Jessica, was especially helpful as we prepared to celebrate my friend's birthday. We are so glad that the Bistro is open again after the damage from leaking pipes from above. We enjoyed the special lemonade made with ginger beer and mint. We dined outside until the first drop of rain appeared as we finished our meal and headed inside for coffee and dessert. A great and memorable afternoon with a long-time friend."

  • "I wish the 7 course dinner was more affordable because it truly was a gustatory experience. Our first time back since they reopened, each course impressed us, both taste and originality of presentation and ingredients. I only wish they had given us an idea of what was to come. Initially the first four tiny tastes made us think we were going to have to stop for ice cream on the way home, (this and the slow pace between morsels sort of made us anxious) but course 5 & 6 were a decent size. If price is no issue, I'd eat here every night. Love the Patio!"

  • "We had a nice dinner on a weekend evening at AKA. Although we were seated immediately, it took a while for a server to approach us and service was slow but attentive. The food was solid but not spectacular. Of note were the frites that came with the steak frites - perfectly cooked. The compound butter on the steak frites lacked seasoning and the onion was just well sauteed but definitely not caramelized. The duck breast that my friend ordered was one of the better ones I have tasted but again was not seasoned adequately. We ordered a bottle of Bordeaux that apparently was unavailable (popular choice?), so we had to change our selection. Dessert was the cheese plate and chocolate mousse with cocoa nibs - both were very good!"

  • "we had a mixed experience for dinner at AKA. The portobello mushroom tempura was really creative and so wonderful but the mesclun salad was heavy on the vinegar and the greens were nothing special. the fish in parchment my husband had was incredibly small for the price and without much taste, and my scallops did not taste fresh although the vegetable accompaniments were wonderful. other dishes our party ordered were mediocre although desserts were reallly excellent. Service and atmosphere were very good but I wouldn't return for the food. It is possible that if we had ordered the raw fish that we would have been more pleased. Had gone a year or so ago and had a completely different experience so not sure if it was just an off night"

  • "From my perspective AKA Bistro was sorely missed while it was closed. It is just starting to get its act together again. Some of my dishes lately have been not up to my usual excpectations. Hope to see continued improvement in quaity of dishes."

  • "You don't need to go into Boston for gourmet food. aka Bistro is a wonderful Japanese French fusion restaurant in Lincoln with ample parking. We each had the 7 course chef tasting menu and it was amazing from beginning to end. Every dish was spaced perfectly and never rushed as we were there for over 2 hours for dinner. Each course got better and better and truly a buildup as the waiter indicated it would be. From the single raw oyster with caviar, kombu seaweed salad, salmon poke ceviche, octopus in coconut milk, duck confit spring roll with foie gras sauce, beef duo and then finally ending with passion fruit sorbet with Japanese cheesecake. We enjoyed every bite and left the bistro happy and satiated."

  • "We were celebrating 2 birthdays and had the 7 course tasting menu. This should be tried at least once! Every course was very special and artistically presented. The service was also outstanding. The wine list was excellent and relatively good value for an upscale restaurant. We had a lovely evening and plan to return!"

  • "Brunch here on a Saturday was a delight! The recently remodeled dining area is comfortable and relaxing. The staff is, as always, attentive, knowledgeable and friendly. Wonderfully strong and rich coffee rounded off the meal, and our leftovers were promptly packed in environmentally friendly Togo containers- no styrofoam here!! Our server, Brendan, and the rest of the staff were always close at hand, refilling waters and speedily returning with any items we requested. Top notch dining and reasonably priced at brunch- don't be discouraged if you cannot get a reservation; Aka only accepts limited reservations so that people walking in can get a table as well. (Plans are underway to enclose the patio area) A real gem!!! "

  • "We are delighted AKA is back. Great staff. Very attentive and knowledgeable. Unique menu. Recently learned that during the 5 months AKA was being repaired, the owner kept the staff on and paid their wages out of his pocket. That alone is such a refreshing and noble gesture in today's world. In addition to great food, we definitely want them to have our business."

  • "Special evening out on a Thursday night. Waiter attentive and informative. Responded well to my gluten free questions and made excellent suggestions. Soup was not special, but salmon salad and tuna salad exquisite, very fresh, unusual ingredients, beautifully presented. Limeade with ginger and one other ingredient was tasty. "

  • "AKA Bistro has (finally) re-opened. It is still a lovely spot for dinner, and the only place in Lincoln for fine dining. The food is classic french bistro on one side of the menu, and sushi on the other, with a focus on local ingredients and unique twists to keep things interesting."

  • "I live in Lincoln and was excited to highlight our local restaurant for my Boston gastronomic colleagues during a recent power lunch. Unfortunately, it didn't live up to expectations. Service was slow & challenging as we were assigned a rookie server who forget to ask how to cook the beef, didn't serve a side plate but charged us for it anyway. A ceviche appetizer that sounded amazing underwhelmed as it was doused in too much coconut milk. The owner/chef flitted from table to table but never stopped at ours to ask about our experience. The maître d' is very competent and she apologized, making things right as she could and for that I'm grateful. Overall, a disappointing culinary and service experience. "

  • "It's great to have AKA back after our go to place had to close due to flooding. Great food, great atmosphere, and great hospitality in a surprising setting. Sometimes it feels as though you're in Boston, not Lincoln! Wish I could be more descriptive, but I've already reviewed this place several times, so just take my word and go."

  • "We really missed this excellent restaurant (one of few in the area) that closed abruptly for several month because of building damage. It serves terrific food, has an innovative French/Japanese menu, delightful service, a caring, attentive owner and an enthusiastic community of fans, who dine (or lunch) here frequently. After it's reopening a week ago, I took guests for dinner two nights in a row, and we were all delighted."

  • "The sweet onion soup was ethereal, and the steak tartar excellent. Their "DeCordova" cocktail is unusual -- and delicious. And we were surprised at the quality of their two local Lincoln wines."

  • "My wife and I went here for her birthday. We were delighted at the service, menu selections and quality of the food. I wouldn't hesitated to go there again. I read past reviews of noice levels and found with their remodel/repair they have gone to extensive measures to reduce the noise reflecting surfaces right down to the type of light fixures."

  • "Although service was slow for my recent lunch, I have eaten here many times and absolutely love it! I am a foodie so appreciate interesting, flavorful food and have always found service to be attentive. Go out of your way for this restaurant!"

  • "We went to AKA for the second time for a big birthday. The restaurant has a dual menu - French and Asian. We went with French. The mushroom tart appetizer was undistinguished. Entrees were better. The environment was very noisy even though the restaurant was only half full. There were no tablecloths and lots of hard surfaces. If you're looking for a quiet and/or romantic dinner, you can do better elsewhere. Our French waitress was having an off night. She acted as if she knew everything but, in fact, got nearly everything wrong. We finally asked for the manager who was very accommodating and apologetic - he acted like a professional. If you live in the area give it a try and see what you think, but it's not worth traveling any distance."

  • "Great dinner, but very slow service at first...given some Champagne to make up for it, though, so not all bad! Very noisy - would be nice if some way to reduce noise."
    Dined on 12/6/2013
  • "Alas!I guess they no longer have the same dessert chef, because the chocolate wasabi cake is no longer available. The food was ok, but nothing special. I found the menu to be lacking with not enough French selections. Appetizers varied enormously in size. I had the mushroom and onion tart, which was excellent, but very large. The ambience was ok - a little too noisy, but not terrible. The tables were worn - many scuffs with the varnish had worn off in places - not at all attractive. Our server was friendly, but at the end of our meal, her back was turned to us for about 15 minutes as she was talking to someone at the bar, making it impossible to get her attention to get our check. We finally had to ask someone else for our check."

  • "A nice eclectic menu that is not too filling and does remind you of a French Bistro. Great to have in Lincoln. Service has definitely improved in recent months."

  • "I took one of my colleagues there for a farewell dinner before he relocated out of state. The food was very flavorful and tasty as usual. The sashimi plate was well done, but a bit pricey in my opinion. The Kobe dumplings were fantastic. The duck confit was a bit too salty for me, but still very tasty."

  • "We went back to AKA Bistro having been a few years ago and having had a good experience. Things unfortunately have declined significantly since that last visit. The frisee, lardon and poached egg salad was spoiled by lardons cooked long before they ever reached my plate, leaving them cold and hard - it was like biting into little bacon pebbles. My wife's attempt at the root vegetable soup was a disaster - the soup was so laden with cream that it almost congealed by the time it reached the table. It went back almost untouched. The entrees were a bit better but nothing worth a special trip. And the wine list is a joke - wildly over priced for incredibly average wines. All in all, a bad experience to be avoided."
