  • What Happened!? A Terrible Meal
    G2014

Having enjoyed for over a decade many wonderful meals at Ajanta, some for very special occasions and with admiration for the restaurant, I was utterly disappointed by a horrible meal for two on Nov. 16. We got a 5:45 reservation and were seated at a table squeezed between two large groups; noisy from the beginning, but we were really looking forward to the meal. We ordered two full dinners. Unlike every prior meal I have had at the restaurant, we didn't receive the simple but elegant Papadams to start with. Perhaps dinners no longer come this amuse bouche. Then, about 10 minutes after we had sat down, our meals arrived. And they arrived with a sudden "attack" of two waiters from two sides of the table and rushed deposit of the plates on the narrow table. We soon discovered that the food was barely warm; barely reheated that is. The Lobhia aur Khumbi, one of my very favorite dishes, had pieces of potato that were cold inside. The Badal Jaam, usually wonderful, was soggy and way over the top with garlic (and I love garlic). We were then rushed by the waiters, who were clearly trying to push us out for another seating, though we had barely been there for 35 minutes. One waiter hovered behind me, pacing, clearly eager to move fast to clear at the slightest pause in eating. I don't even recall if we were given a dessert menu; I don't believe so. What happened? Who knows. Perhaps we were deemed lesser patrons having reserved on this site? Perhaps it was because we didn't order alcohol or a bunch of appetizers. The table was a tough one to service, given its location, but that should have led the service staff to be especially attentive and generous. What could have been a relaxing and delicious meal was just unpleasant—at at a restaurant that has long been superb, and which I regularly ate at during its earlier, "tough" years.

Lovely, upscale Indian restaurant. I am not Indian but love Indian food and have tried as many Indian places as I could. This place is one of the best. I consider it on a par with Bombay Cafe in LA. The food is delicious and creative. The prices are reasonable. My favorite dishes were the tandoori lamb chops and the kulfi. Best kulfi I have ever had. I would definitely recommend a reservation. It was packed at 6pm on Thursday.

I was taken to Ajanta several weeks ago by three South Asian friends and found the menu extensive, the food delicious, the service excellent, and the prices reasonable. I returned last week with family members (not South Asians), and they were all delighted with the experience. We are not by any means foodies or experts in this type of cuisine, but with the prior endorsement from those very familiar with Indian food and now with a "second opinion" from occasional users, I am an enthusiastic "fan" of Ajanta and plan to return. I recommend it highly!

Ajanta was a unique dining experience, as they have art boxes on the ceiling. The real draw is the food and service. Eggplant and chicken were cooked to perfection, savory and juicy. Service was attentive. Made my birthday special.

I stopped by here hoping to have some great Indian food... but left underwhelmed. While the food was okay, it wasn't near the top of the list for Indian for me. The scallop appetizer was overcooked by a good 2 minutes, creating a rubber band consistency. I chose a special of the day for my entree and found the sauce to be watered down and lacking much flavor and the chicken to also be overcooked and dry. Finally, the naan was way too greasy/oily to even eat a whole piece. All in all, I would say this meal was 'fair' at best. - Adam

We each ordered the non-vegetarian combo meal & requested medium spicy. Clearly we should have ordered very mild as everything was too hot for our taste buds. This really overwhelmed the flavors so nothing was really a standout. The tandoori scallops were tasty but overcooked & a bit tough. Neither of us liked Murg Mumtaz Mahal. The Lamb rib chops were definitely the best dish we had.

I've been going to Ajanta for years. It is THE outstanding Indian restaurant of the entire San Francisco Bay Area, including the City itself. It's ALWAYS consistent in service and food quality. Owner Lachu Moorjani sends a monthly "letter" to those on Ajanta's mailing list describing the new dishes for the month and listing those that have been temporarily discontinued to make room for the new. He and the staff are always gracious and knowledgable.

Ajanta is definitely a jewel. Certain foodie friends from out of town always meet me there for dinner, and it never disappoints! This visit the eggplant entree was my favorite, but the corn and scallop fritter appetizer was also a table favorite. Tandoori salmon was delicate, not the strongest tandoori flavors, but so delicious and we cleaned our plates, as usual. rice pudding and a chilled creamy dessert with pistachios and cardamom...oh yum.

After not having eaten at Ajanta for some years, we dined there this past week, and thought the food was outstanding. We ordered all our dishes off the monthly special menu: we shared an order of the scallop & corn pakoras on the appetizer menu, and found them delicious. My husband ordered the Achari Gohsht, a lamb dish, and thought the dish was one of the best he'd ever eaten, though he found that the "high medium" degree of spice was a little too hot for his taste. I ordered the Murg do Pyaza, and found the flavors wonderful, while wishing I'd ordered a hotter version. We plan to dine at Ajunta again this week (before these dishes are replaced by new October specials), and will each change the degree of heat!

We come here about once a month, this time with friends to celebrate two birthdays. We snacked on the scallop/corn appetizer with a tangy sauce then chose four entrées - a chicken and a lamb from the new monthly specials, the Kandahar chicken and the pork vindaloo. The special lamb was a tad spicy for one of our friends who has a very sensitive cough, easily triggered, but the rest of us loved it. Mango mousse and kulfi rounded out our meal. Service was impeccable - water glasses always filled, conversations never interrupted. Can't wait to come back.

Went with close friends for a last-minute get together and we had 5 individual orders for appetizers, main dish, and dessert which we shared. The appetizers are very unique and distinct in the variety of flavors. Every dish was a beautiful and subtle collection of flavors unique to the regional differences within India. We also tried 5 different deserts and again every choice was amazing. We ordered most of the dishes medium hot so that we could all sample the different dishes and not worry about eccentricities of preference for the amount of heat in any single dish.

I have always had great meals at Ajanta, but this time food was really mediocre - not much taste or flavor on most of the dishes our party of 5 ordered. Even after being asked to specify the "spiceyness" level and ordering moderately high - my lamb dish was not spicey and the lamb itself was tasteless. Disappointed the quality has not been maintained.

We have been dining at Ajanta for decades. Each meal is a pleasure to the taste buds. Our selections alternate between a fixed price meal with dessert, a full one dish meal with accompaniments, or a delicious tasting menu for a sample of many dishes. WONDERFUL experience for the taste buds every time. The menu changes a bit every month with new dishes from around India. But a few items always remain on the menu. Prices are very reasonable. We love reading the e-newsletters that describe the new dishes.

At Ajanta, the menu has selections from discrete parts of India so a complex country is made to come alive in the various dishes offered. There are always delicious vegetarian choices and new items on the menu, both vegetarian and non-vegetarian, appear every month. Every dish is crafted with interesting and exotic spices. In addition, the staff is attentive, pleased to be helpful to older or disabled customers, and knowledgeable. This is a great restaurant and we are lucky to have Ajanta in the East Bay.

We were running a few minutes late for our reservation on a busy Sunday night, but the host called us to see if we were still coming before giving away our table. This was much appreciated! The staff was friendly and courteous when we finally arrived and we were quickly seated. The dining room was stylish and nicely appointed. We decided to get the chef's tasting menu, and we were not disappointed! Our appetizers arrived quickly and were delicious. Our main dishes arrived after an appropriate interval and were also exquisite. Desserts were a delicious and refreshing end to a wonderful meal. Even though the restaurant was filled and busy, but we never felt rushed nor abandoned. It was a memorable meal, and we would love to return!
