Went with close friends for a last-minute get together and we had 5 individual orders for appetizers, main dish, and dessert which we shared. The appetizers are very unique and distinct in the variety of flavors. Every dish was a beautiful and subtle collection of flavors unique to the regional differences within India. We also tried 5 different deserts and again every choice was amazing. We ordered most of the dishes medium hot so that we could all sample the different dishes and not worry about eccentricities of preference for the amount of heat in any single dish.

Following the recommendation of the waiter, we tried the sampler menu. And what a great idea. It featured what they determined was the best on the menu - and it did not disappoint. It was FANTASTIC. The Seyal Machi may have been the best dish I have ever had. I will continue to go back again and again.

I have always had great meals at Ajanta, but this time food was really mediocre - not much taste or flavor on most of the dishes our party of 5 ordered. Even after being asked to specify the "spiceyness" level and ordering moderately high - my lamb dish was not spicey and the lamb itself was tasteless. Disappointed the quality has not been maintained.

We have been dining at Ajanta for decades. Each meal is a pleasure to the taste buds. Our selections alternate between a fixed price meal with dessert, a full one dish meal with accompaniments, or a delicious tasting menu for a sample of many dishes. WONDERFUL experience for the taste buds every time. The menu changes a bit every month with new dishes from around India. But a few items always remain on the menu. Prices are very reasonable. We love reading the e-newsletters that describe the new dishes.

At Ajanta, the menu has selections from discrete parts of India so a complex country is made to come alive in the various dishes offered. There are always delicious vegetarian choices and new items on the menu, both vegetarian and non-vegetarian, appear every month. Every dish is crafted with interesting and exotic spices. In addition, the staff is attentive, pleased to be helpful to older or disabled customers, and knowledgeable. This is a great restaurant and we are lucky to have Ajanta in the East Bay.

Not bad for California Indian but nothing special. Main courses were average -we had a Chicken tandoori curry and vegetarian dish that had identical sauce. Tandoori scollop appetizer was OK but chicken wings were completely bland and unexceptional. We much prefer Viks and Lotus Cafe in Marin.

We were running a few minutes late for our reservation on a busy Sunday night, but the host called us to see if we were still coming before giving away our table. This was much appreciated! The staff was friendly and courteous when we finally arrived and we were quickly seated. The dining room was stylish and nicely appointed. We decided to get the chef's tasting menu, and we were not disappointed! Our appetizers arrived quickly and were delicious. Our main dishes arrived after an appropriate interval and were also exquisite. Desserts were a delicious and refreshing end to a wonderful meal. Even though the restaurant was filled and busy, but we never felt rushed nor abandoned. It was a memorable meal, and we would love to return!

Every time we're in the Bay Area visiting our daughter - we've made certain that one of our dinners winds up at Ajanta. However, for expecting the highest presentation, we found our favorite scallop appetizer over-cooked ... and our other dishes while good weren't up to their usual distinctive deliciousness.

This family-run restaurant provides the best of Asian Indian cuisine. Recipe listings have a solid foundation of classics with innovative recipes from various regions rotating in and out with the seasons. There is a story to accompany the featured dish, letting you know its history and how it came to be a part of the chef's repertoire. It never disappoints. providing options for the omnivore and vegan alike. It is truly a neighborhood gem, the staff making you feel like one of the family.

I have eaten at Ajanta for years, and seek it out as one of my favorite go-to places in Berkeley. My main course was delicious, however the appetizer we got (veggie pakora) was awful. Bland, every piece seemed to be zucchini, just like zucchini fritters rather than pakora. Also we had a reservation that got confused by the maitre'd. And it wasn't clear at first who was going to be helping us at our table. Things just seemed a little more disjointed and not as put together and outstanding as they usually are.

We discovered recently with friends that Ajanta is also one of their favorite restaurants, so met up last Sunday for dinner. Always fun with 4 or more (we were 5) because we could eat family style and try lots of new dishes. Our servers were gracious and non-intrusive - especially important as we were together to catch up. The lamb dishes (new this month and the kadhai gosht) as well as the chicken pistachio, the tandoori salmon and the paneer kofta were all tasty, not too spicy for us to enjoy with wine and not a bite left over! We chose the brown basmati rice, and our meals came with fresh naan and traditional condiments of salted vegetables, seasoned carrots and mango chutney. We shared our favorite kulfi and a mango sorbet for dessert.

Food was bland, service was non-existent. simple dishes like daal makhani were watered down and flavorless. The tandoori chicken tikka although moist was devoid of any masala. The lamb chops and tandoori fish saved the dinner, although the portions were small. At their prices and the zagat rating I expected much better. Would go to amber over this place anyday

food service was 1. take order 2. put food in front of you 3. that's all. Food: was FANtastic as usual. Not sure what we felt was missing? Maybe a bit of acknowledgement that we were humans behind the credit card? Hard to sound appropriate because the proper things happened, from wait staff, but there was no passion or emotion there.... Did I say the food was fantastic?! lol. Yes, it was. normally I give this place 4 stars....

Disappointing that this is rated as (one of) the best Indian restaurants in the Bay Area. It now has the feeling of a place that is a little tired. The service was discrete and the food was tasty. The kitchen tried to add a little something with presentation but it clearly is not their forte. This was not our first time, and to be honest it hasn't changed a lot. It could have changed for the better, but seems to be content with staying at good rather than striving for excellence.
