Diner Reviews
  • "We we lived in the Bay Area, we were frequent visitors to Ajanta. Every visit would introduce us to a delicious dish we had never seen at any other Indian restaurant. When our travels brought us back to the area we quickly headed to Ajanta where we ordered the tasting menu (non-vegetarian). Starting with the first offering, wonderful scallops, each dish was outstanding. The food at Ajanta is not just fantastic Indian food, it is fabulous food regardless of its origins."

  • "They do need to polish the service. The food is average at best. The presentation is mediocre. Came from Concord and was not worth the trip. Not planning to go again anytime soon."

  • "Really enjoyed our celebratory (birthday) dinner with friends here...thought that medium spicy was hot enough...beware of the pickles."

  • "This place is a find. Solano is a really fun neighborhood with a lot of Asian restaurants, but this one stands out. Very nice staff, very lively and fun. Food was excellent - I had chicken dish with medium spices, my wife had lamb in a mild sauce - all very good. Veggie pakoras good, but not too much. Naan was OK. Had to flag down a waiter."

  • "The food is wonderful! We typically order too much but the wait staff always warns us when we are ordering too much and makes helpful suggestions. Also, we stayed too long because we were talking with an old friend. We were the last to leave and they were utterly gracious even though we really should have left sooner."

  • "We enjoyed the experience - efficient Indian restaurant with great tasting food!"

  • "Beautifully arranged plates with high quality ingredients, but all dishes overly salted including one which was inedible due to saltiness. We are accustomed to salt in foods."

  • "Excellent and varied menu with specialty dishes from both northern and southern India."

  • "Ajanta is really an interesting place. We have been eating at Ajanta since they were upstairs in a little spot on Telegraph, seems like forever. Their current restaurant is more upscale, nicely designed, comfortable, but still small and intimate. The offerings are wonderful because they have excellently prepared renditions of fairly standard dishes, but they also have rotating, varying regional dishes which are not only unusual but can't be found anywhere else. Really well presented and prepared, wonderfully tasty! We live in SF but love to cross the Bay to indulge in this very special restaurant. Bravo!"

  • "The food at Adjanta is consistently wonderful, but be aware that their medium spicey may be hotter than you expect. The menu changes monthly depending on what good produce is in season. I love the eggplant dish when it is available. Good wine list, and friendly service. Quiet enough to talk, and one of my favorite places in the Bay Area! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️"

  • "Three of us tried and shared the following dishes. As appetizer: Veg Samosa - light compared to other Samosas I have had Tandoori Scallops As main course: Chicken Tikka Masala - yum Navaratta Korma - yum Basmati Rice - essential - comes with a spinach side, don't know what it is called. Naan - yum, yum Assorted Chutneys Dessert: Kulfi - a standout! Cardamon Gelato"

  • "Thus by far the best Indian restaurant in the East Bay. The food is always cooked to perfection, the wait staff are experienced and courteous, and the ambiance is swell. What more can you ask for!?!"

  • "This is the best Indian place I've been to. The spices are so intricate, and every dish is perfectly balanced. I've taken many people here and they have always loved it! Thank you."

  • "I've eaten here several times in the past for lunch. This was my first evening dining experience. It's always been consistently delicious with very pleasant and quick service. The taste of the food is incredible. They have so many choices from a variety of locales around India which makes it very unique. The tastes are very pure and distinct. We met the owner and asked him for their cookbook which they have for sale. I highly recommend purchasing it if you'd like to try your hand at preparing the dishes at home. He even signed the book for us! If you've been wanting to try Indian cuisine for the first time, or if you're looking for the best spot in the gourmet ghetto in Berkeley to have Indian food, you must try Ajanta!"

  • "Loved the tasting plate dinner - it was perfect for the experimental eater and gave a great variety of what the chef had to offer - Will definitely return! The only drawback was we felt rushed at the end of our meal as we wanted to linger and chat and we were definitely cleared up and encouraged to leave (even water glasses were cleared!)"

  • "Our favorite Indian restaurant by far. The high point is not only fine seasoning but meat or fish that is never over-cooked like most Indian restaurants. A bit noisy at peak time. Indian wines not great but others to select from."

  • "Ajanta is not an ordinary Indian restaurant. Its food is creative. Its ambience as a real Indian restaurant is unsurpassed. Its fish or meats are succulent and not over-cooked and dried-out as in most ethnic restaurants, usually because everything is usually cooked early in a batch so that the time that ou order your meal at 730-800 or later, you might as well be eating "jerky." Not Ajanta. It is our "go-to" restaurant for OOT guests."

  • "My only disappointment is the size of the portions which I think are rather small. The service is great. Everyone who works here is very pleasant and responsive. We had a fine time and will return yet again."

  • "This was one of our worst dinning experiences ever. The service was down right insulting. We asked the waiter what there opinion was on a few items on the menu and they didn't say a word to us. We also had a glass of water spill on our table and No One came to help. On top of that when we were served our food they simply shoved it in front of us and expected us to move our own plates to make room. Completely rude. Will never go back ever."

  • "Excellent overall. But as usual too loud to hear one another without bending into the food...which was delicious as always there.. I would have preferred to have followed my gut in ordering and not ordered two of the recommended items whose sa uses were too similar!"

  • "The best Indian food I've had in the Bay Area. Service is attentive, the food is outstanding, the staff is friendly. The cookbook and spice box they sell are also highly recommended. I just wish we lived closer so I could come more often!"

  • "Four of us dined at Ahanta for the first time. Food was fantastic. The only negative was our waiter. We had to flag him down to get a drink and he clearly did not enjoy his role as a server. But I would go back for the food!"
    Dined on 3/8/2014
  • "I had heard a lot of good things about Ajanta so maybe my expectations were too high. Then again, maybe not. The service was slow and essentially we were ignored while others who had come in after us were attended to. Once we ordered, the food, which was disappointing, was pretty much slapped in front of us. If the food had been better, it could have made up for the poor service since I understand there may be off days where there might be a staff shortage or whatever. But since the food was merely ok, overpriced for what it was, and the service was so bad, I will never go back. There are a lot of other excellent Indian restaurants nearby."

  • "Some of the best subcontinent cuisine I have had in the Bay Area. Excellent presentations, and wonderful food. We like spicy and the medium intensity option was perfect to bring out the full flavors. I can imagine the full spice is killer!"

  • "I have eaten Indian food all over the world, and this was in a league of it's own. Dishes made in ways I've not seen before. Excellent, subtle flavors. Beautifully presented. Impeccable service and the meal was paced nicely. Also, the request for 'mild' was respectfully acknowledged - oftentimes this is not the case."

One day, we hope to visit the Ajanta caves in India - though will probably be sad not to have food waiting for us there!"

  • "Always good, but not always great. Service is not as it was. Clear plates and glassware without asking. My wife had her wine disappear while talking with our guest. Should not happen after many years of coming here (over 16 years)."
