  • "I am reminded that I should come to Victoria more often - it has been too long since my last special tea."

  • "Very overpriced for the limited items you get. The hotel needs a facelift too, it looks run down and stodgy."

  • "It is a tourist thing to do and is fun, but be mindful that they offer you items not included in your already high price of $60. I felt the food overall was overpriced. THe desserts were rich, but delicious. I had been offered selections of tea assuming they were in the price and they were not. Be careful. If you are on a budget this might not be for you."

  • "There for 4:45 high tea. Paid $130 for the Ambience and $20 for the food. The piano player left to go home 10 minutes after our seating and we had our tea and treats as the dining hall was being shut down for the afternoon. Very disappointing. The entertainment should have stayed until the last guests leave. We were out of there at approximately 5:05. $150 wasted."

  • "A once in a life time experience but at $60 per person expensive. Our lovely server did offer us seconds on the scones which we greatly appreciated. The tea sandwich selection was one of each type (5) per person. Dainty and gone in 2 normal bites so nibble to prolong the experience. We were not rushed might be because we ordered a bottle of champagne along with the tea. The deserts were yummy again 5 types 1 per person."

  • "Afternoon Tea at the Empress was an absolutely delight, the food was original and amazing and the service was top-notch."

  • "We looked fwrd to sharing high tea with our Californian visitors. Food I thought was just alright considering the price. We have had a high tea experience previously at a lovely Oak Bay tea shop in Victoria where the food was far superior & staff not quite so hovering. Our server, although very attentive was overly so, pouring tea when we weren't ready for that 2nd/3rd/4th cup & made us feel rather rushed. Also as the server explained the tea choices, highly recommended the teas that were not on the 'included in price' tea menu but an extra $10 charge w/o mentioning he was upselling us. Overall, experience felt rather disappointing."

  • "I can always count on a wonderful experience when going to tea at the Empress. It is consistent and delightful. Positives-ambience makes you feel as if you were there during it's heyday, wait staff kind and efficient, we sat next to a window and enjoyed the harbor view. The food was good-scones quite yummy, finger sandwiches were tasty, especially the curry. Ham one was ok. Little desserts were nice, a wee too sweet for me. A glass of champagne was tasty and refreshing. Negatives-I didn't care for the push for upgrading our tea and the meal portion. I really did like the oolong tea our waiter strongly suggested, but I missed it being in the tea pot like the Empress tea. It was in a french press, not very Victorian. All in all-lovely!"

  • "It was a beautiful room, great view from our table and service was perfect. The cost is extreme considering the cuisine. The equilivant of one small sandwich, strawberries, a scone and a few bit-sized desserts for $60+ tax and tip is too much. We did it once, but never again. The locals told us later to go to Murchies next time."

  • "Truly a great experience. The tea was delicious and like none other. Plentiful servings of tiny desserts, delicious sandwiches and scones. Definitely would do an Afternoon Tea here again."
    Dined on 7/16/2014
  • "Too loud from the centralized dish clearing area that ruined the ambiance. Reserved at $45.00 a head. They charged $60.00."
    Dined on 7/16/2014
  • "I've never been to a formal tea and was concerned that it would be a rigid and snooty experience, but it was a comfortable and enjoyable afternoon. Our server was very congenial and attentive and the tea and food was exceptional! Everyone in our party enjoyed it very much."

  • "The hotel itself and the setting for the afternoon tea is classic and just what you expect. We made our reservations, but still had to stand in line with people who just walked in. I expected a little more style and dressed up people, but it was mostly very casual shoppers in t-shirt and flip-flops. The service was very good and the whole process was explained to a rookie family as us in a very good way. Now, the tea itself and the little sandwiches and pastries were all good, perhaps even deliciuos, but $60 a head! C'mon man! Well, we've done it. It's off the bucket list, and as much as I like freshed baked scones - it's just not worth doing it again. Lyckily for the Empress, there is a line of new tourists every day that's willing."

  • "Worth the investment. Great atmosphere and history around the tea and a very well done tea. Splurged and took my wife there and she loved it."

  • "We all had a lovely time and it was the perfect ending to a perfect vacation."

  • "Classic setting has become dated. Food was good, service was great. Very expensive."

  • "My sister was visiting from Ontario and it was on her "bucket list" to have high tea at the Empress. We treated her and her husband for their anniversary. She was very excited and enjoyed the tea very much. Thank you Empress."

  • "The Empress Hotel is beautiful and we have had tea at the Fairmont in Whistler, BC. which was wonderful. Here in Victoria was a different story. The service was very rushed. They were out of Earl Gray tea, or so we were told by our server. I think he just wanted us to have the same to make it easier as Earl Grey was served a couple of tables away. The tea and food were very nice but I expected better service higher quality and variety at $60 per person."

  • "We visited Victoria just for the day and my mother and I enjoyed the time together having Tea at the Empress. A wonder girls outing!"

  • "My daughter and I enjoyed our afternnoon tea at the empress. The sandwiches were good and the scones were delicious. The atmosphere was great. The 60 dlr price was too much."

  • "We attended Afternoon Tea at the Fairmont Empress Hotel in Victoria, BC on July 13, 2014. It was a gracious experience, with delicious sandwiches, scones, fresh fruit, and delicious desserts, and of course, tea. Beautiful, historic hotel with a British feel."
    Dined on 7/13/2014
  • "This was a very expensive high tea and "touristy". I'm not sure that it's worth the price -$150.00! The service was excellent. Somehow looking at people in shorts and sandals while spending $150.00 doesn't quite fit!"
    Dined on 7/13/2014
  • "I had always looked forward to having High Tea at the Empress, and I was not disappointed! Our waitress was gracious and attentive, and the food was excellent. My husband needs gluten-free, and they were very accommodating. We requested gluten-free when we made our reservation, and they acknowledged that as soon as we arrived. They prepared a lovely, gluten-free tea that was very similar to mine - little sandwiches, a scone, and squares. We were thrilled with the experience!"

  • "I expected this to be a classy place and was dissapointed although it was beautiful I wasn't expecting them to make up there own exchange rate. My whole experience in that city felt like one big tourist trap. I will not return again."

  • "Our group of 3 adults and 1 child had a great experience at afternoon tea. One of the adults in our party has a dairy allergy; we notified them ahead of time and they created a wonderful dairy-free selection of treats for her. So much food that we couldn't finish everything (those small sandwiches and sweets go a long way!). The princess tea for our 5 year old was perfect -- she chose hot chocolate instead of tea and had kid-friendly sandwiches and treats (including a crazy hair cookie that she raved about). A wonderful splurge with excellent service!"

  • "We took my mom here as a special treat. They were very accommodating to our dietary needs and altered the sandwiches, as we don't eat meat or chicken. Service was wonderful. It was a treat!"

  • "pricey, one time special experience. Elegant atmosphere; wonderful service."

  • "In celebration of a special birthday having high tea at the Empress was a memorable occasion. The service was very good, as was the selection of food served for high tea. It certainly brought back many happy memories of scones, clotted cream and jam in England. The Empress is a wonderful historic hotel and the tradition of high tea was much appreciated. We will be back!"

  • "Tea at the Empress is an iconic experience in Victoria, but from the moment we sat down, we were either being upsold, (have the sparkling wine and cheese), or rushed. Before any tea arrived we had both the strawberry starter and all of our sandwiches had arrived. Our waiter poured our first cup of tea, but never really came back to pour, chat, anything. We were a bit disappointed. The desserts were marginal, the savory sandwiches were fabulous!"

  • "One cannot visit Victoria, BC without making reservations for Afternoon Tea! The service was magnificent, the food (from first course through pastries) fit for Royalty, the staff absolutely fabulous."

  • "We brought our two teenagers and we all had a wonderful time! I was very impressed with the service (our waitress poured our tea for us!) and she was extremely attentive. The restaurant did a great job for those that are gluten-free and the other foods were wonderful! Truly a wonderful afternoon!"

  • "The Empress afternoon tea is an occasion with delicious food and tea, amazing service and an old-world elegance difficult to find here in the United States. I recommend it fully, and look forward to my next visit to Victoria for more of the same!"

  • "My wife said this was the highlight of her trip. It was a once in a lifetime experience and although it was expensive, we thought it was well worth the price."

  • "Having had afternoon tea at the Empress Hotel 7 years ago....we were somewhat disappointed in the food. Sandwiches were mostly bread...not enough filling and not much flavour and the petit fours were average, to say the least. However the scones and the tea were lovely. It is unfortunate that, other than ambience, the Empress Hotel does not even hold a candle to a lovely tea place in Vancouver called "The Secret Garden". I took my daughter to the Hotel Vancouver for afternoon tea prior to that and it was even worse and had no ambience at all. Although, we enjoyed a mother/daughter day.....my daughter had just come back from England where she had afternoon tea at Claridges so......."
