  • "Chef Martin has forever changed what I thought about traditional "heavy, Brown" German food!! What a delight!!"

  • "What a great looking room, I only wish the food matched. The chilled cucumber soup was good but the fennel foam on top had no flavor. If molecular gastronomy doesn't add flavor or texture don't go it. The duck with sour cherry was yummy but a horrible presentation. And the chocolate cake was old and bad!! It tasted like a walk in cool smells and for the amount of money I paid it should have been fresh. With so many good places to eat in KC I will go someplace else next time."

  • "We were almost 30 mins. late for our reservation. I called and let them know we were running late and the kitchen stayed open just for us for brunch on Father's Day. All the food was delicious."

  • "This has become one of favorite restaurants in the area. We enjoy every thing about it from the location, staff, food and setting. Never have we been disappointed. A must for those of you that like to try something new."

  • "Food was outstanding and the environment was perfect. We got lucky because these was a small crowd in the restaurant that night so we were able to be in our own space for dinner. Ther service could use a littl bit of help. The server mumbled and was sometimes hard to understand and out orders got delayed a little bit. I would definitely recommend this to a group of 4-5 foodies for a night out."

  • "I always enjoy eating here when I go downtown. I love the German food and interesting seasonal menus. The scallops with foie gras is to die for! Nice wine list, check out the roses this summer."

  • "You can trust Chef Martin. He will find the best quality foods and prepares them perfectly. I like a chef I can trust! His wife Katrin may not be a sommelier but her wine recommendations are always right on."

  • "Gourmet German and a lot of great dishes that you wouldn't expect. The beet salad is unbelievably good, and most of the entrees that I've had are unparalleled."

  • "What a great experience. The food was wonderful and our server, Mark, was a delight. Highly recommended. We'll be back"

  • "We enjoy this place and chatting with the owners, at least the wife, the husband is busy preparing the food. Small portions, but always very, very tasty. A nice approach to German food, modern, upscale, delicious cuisine."

  • "The food was outstanding. Everything we had was delicious. Our server could have possibly been a little more attentive, especially considering we weren't there while it was busy. But, overall, the experience was very good."

  • "The food was excellent and beautifully presented. "

  • "I've lived and traveled in Germany for over 10 years. I love sitting down in a gasthaus for a good jaeger schnitzel and pils. The meal at Affare was like a trip down memory lane. Will be back again."

  • "I feel like I've been to every good restaurant downtown twice this year with so many great shows at Kauffman. And I was starting to get bored with my options. But this was my first visit to Affare and it was a great option for a pre-show dinner. The food was fantastic (I had the bratwurst plate mushroom soup; my friend the beet salad and elk loin). I particularly recommend the mushroom soup - so flavorful!. Parking was easy, although may be complicated by the building of the streetcar line in coming months. The service was impeccable. Overall, it was a wonderful experience and I definitely plan to go back. "

  • "The lunch was excellent and by each of us ordering a different option from the three courses we were able to sample all of the lunch special. We will be back for Sunday brunch for the chicken and waffle sometime."

  • "This is a great restaurant, you can enjoy every course and leave without feeling over fed. The endless mimosas were excellent"

  • "The restaurant was a nice quiet atmosphere with wonderful art to look at. The menu had lots of variety. The food was delicious. My party had traditional German and the Specialty items. The service was wonderful. They even picked up our unused straws and crumbs from the table."

  • "We went with friends to Affare on a weeknight. The menu was innovative, with some classic German dishes along with more modern interpretations. The wild mushroom soup starter was fantastic. We all had different entrees and all were visually well presented and very tasty. The scallop dish was a bit on the small side though. Dessert was also very enjoyable. As a person with a food allergy, the pastry chef made a special dessert for me that was a very nice touch. The decor is a bit sparse, but the music was soft enough to hold a conversation without yelling, but loud enough to enjoy as background. Ask for the bar and lounge menu along side the regular table menu. The bar menu has home-made pretzel items that must be sampled. "

  • "5 star service from Tony. 5 star ambience. Food was excellent - 4 star. This form would only allow 'outstanding' ratings above - the second time this has happened to me in a week. Sauerbraten and weinerschnitzel were excellent. A simple room has inexpensively been transformed into a very nice space."

  • "Affare is a welcoming place, uber-professional and warm, filled with art and carefully constructed Modern German cuisine. We celebrated a recent victory with a group, and Affare developed a special pre-fixe menu just for us (even wishing one member of our group Happy Birthday on it!). We dined outside on a perfect night, seated underneath flowers that fell on us at just the right rhythm. The food was exquisite: Affare seems to pick out the best locally available produce. We ate the most memorable and delicious spring asparagus soup I've ever had, a morel-dumpling dish that I couldn't finish because the soup had been so filling, and a delicate apple strudel with multiple textures. Chef Martin came out and thanked us. What a night!"

  • "This is not your grandparents german food!! Not only is the approach to german food fresh and creative but the ingredients are fresh, many tasting like they're straight from the garden. Although some of the dishes are traditional, all are prepared with a new twist and presented exquisitely. "

  • "Try to eat at a "new" place each month. This will become a repeat venue. Great food, wine and the owner came by twice to welcome us."

  • "Food is always interesting and tasty. A great alternative to Webster House for a pre-Kauffman PAC event--servers make absolutely sure you will get there on time. "

  • "We had a lovely brunch on Sunday. The food was spectacular. All things asparagus and morels were incredible. The music initially was folk acoustic indie (perfect) then morphed to some throw back 80s stuff- why? We will definitely go back for dinner soon!"
    Dined on 5/11/2014
  • "Four of us went for brunch on Mother's Day and each of us said we will go back soon. The waitress knew the menu well and even suggested a dish that wasn't on i when I asked what were her favorites so we sampled their version of Mac and Cheese. Creamy, smooth made with spaezle, and chorizo. All of us had something with eggs and they were all cooked perfectly with nice orange yolk. They emphases buying directly off local farms and have selected farms that truly help make the food appealing and super fresh tasting. "

  • "I have mixed feelings about this visit. Did not care for the waitresses attitude, but the food was pretty good. I like the ambiance. The food is interesting. Its German, but not all sour. Everything has a unique and delicious flavor. There were 8 of us, and we all sampled."

  • "Affare offers an urban chic atmosphere, a creative and well-stocked bar and a wide variety of dishes. Whether you want to create a 4-course dinner or share assorted small plates, it's tough to choose just one entree! Interesting starters and salads are the perfect prelude to an assortment of seafood, poultry and meats prepared in a contemporary continental style, or updated German classics. Service is comfortable and thorough. This was our 3rd visit, so obviously we liked it pretty well even though it is a bit pricey: we have averaged about $80 per person including tip on each visit. Convenient free parking behind the restaurant is a definite plus for a downtown location, and this is a great spot for dining before the symphony or ballet."

  • "I could say that 100 times. I have food sensitivities and the chef was SO accommodating, allowing me to eat a delicious AND safe meal. It was so good that we went back again the same weekend. I Highly recommend it."

  • "We were pleasantly surprised with the upscale, contemporary take on some very traditional German dishes. The interesting wines offered were refreshing just like we were sitting in the Rhine Valley enjoying a crisp rose with our meal. Madeline our server could not have been more helpful in our meal selection. Affare is a keeper and worth exploring."

  • "The atmosphere here is good, the food is great, but this time the service was very slow. We arrived before our six friends, and after being seated, no one came to see if we wanted drinks while waiting. The waiter was nice, but very slow and not attentive at all. We had to look for him. He never came to refill water glasses until we were ready to leave. "

  • "Never worry that this is traditional German fare. I ordered German chocolate cake for dessert, and instead of a heavy chocolate cake with caramel icing, I received an artistically arranged small cheesecake garnished with fresh mint with sugar crystals. The main dish was garnished with real lilac flowers. The cream of white asparagus soup was luscious. The bread was a pretzel-type bread still warm from the oven with a delightful relish. Go and enjoy."

  • "Great food, great service. They knew I was going to a 7:30pm performance, and made sure I was served and ready to go in plenty of time. There is some bare brick and modern art, which fits the space. The food (cream of asparagus soup, veal rack, German chocolate cake) was wonderful! Could improve: ladies' room is a little small and worse for wear along the edges; parking lot needs to be marked from Main (but free parking at Crossroads on first Friday is a Godsend). "

  • "Looks small from outside, but really a large dining area. Waitress was friendly and efficient. We each had the sauerbraten and it was delicious. Dumplings which accompanied the lunch were also really good. Parking is somewhat of an issue as always with a downtown restaurant, but well worth finding a place to park. They do have some parking at the back which is about half block away. Would definitely recommend this restaurant."

  • "The midweek lunch traffic was light on the day I brought a client to Affare. The food was excellent! The portions were reasonable and the server was knowledgeable about the menu and maintained the right amount of presence. The dining room itself is very pleasant with enough room between tables."
