Diner Reviews
  • "Our experience was, well, perfect. Start to finish.Menu well thought out and presented and not overwhelming. When the food arrived it was beautiful presented. Lots of options from the white asparagus soup (perfection) and kale salad with edible dirt to the scallops with foie gras and hollandaise and the elk loin with huckleberry sauce. All the portions were perfect - just the amount a person should enjoy. Everyone at the table was impressed and thought what they got was the best. Really an exceptional meal! We didn't have time to really experience a tasting menu and I fully intend to return to give it a try. We will definitely be back and recommend to everyone who enjoys fine dining."

  • "This is a great restaurant with a big city feel. Interesting menu, great food, great service. "

  • "We couldn't believe we had not visited Affare sooner and will be back quickly. Everything about the evening was wonderful. Our waiter, Tony greeted us like old friends and gave us a tour of the entire space after dinner. Then our order began to arrive - amazing ravioli with a carrot puree, bratwursts the restaurant is famous for with delicious mini pickles and mustards. Entrees continued the fantastic experience - with scallops, bison short-rib and a walleye with lobster combination that my friend said was the best dinner ever. Couldn't pass up dessert - the apple strudel and German chocolate cake was heavenly. Finally chef gives you each get a small wrapped piece of German coffee cake for the next morning. What a terrific experience."

  • "My lunch group enjoyed affaire very much. Several had never been there and commented they would return soon!"

  • "First the food was excellent. But I had an issue with putting the Walleye into the risotto. Walleye is mild & very good fish that shouldn't be "covered" it should stand by itself along with the excellent risotto that you served:). I'll be back as I love supporting locals, which is why I am telling you this... I want you to succeed. All the best"

  • "Affare exceeded our expectations for a high end German cuisine restaurant. The food was excellent and cooked just right. The cocktails were good as well. The decor and ambiance were modern as if in a big city. The owner visits each table to welcome her guests and inquire about their dining experience. We will dine here again!"

  • "I tried all four dishes at the table and they were all tip top!!!"

  • "We were given a gift certificate to Affare and were very pleasantly surprised. Our reservation request was honored for seating and our waiter was very well versed on menu, wine and beer. He made excellent suggestions and we tried menu entrees that we may not have tried otherwise. When our feed came the presentation was very artistic as well as appealing and we both commented, and it was excellent! We have already recommended the restaurant to others and we will return to enjoy again!"

  • "We found this restaurant online and we're glad we decided to dine here. The food and ambiance was terrific. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to a friend."

  • "My wife and I came here for our second anniversary and ended up taking advantage of über hour! The prices were very reasonable considering the upscale class of the restaurant, and the staff was very friendly. We can't wait to come back for the next special occasion!"

  • "I've been to Affäre twice. First time I had a 3 course meal with mixed drink. The dessert was just amazing. Very authentic European dessert, like the ones served on luxury cruise lines. It's not too sweet compare to the American version. The second time, we took kids and ordered 4 different dessert. We seated at a corner close to the window. The staffs were all friendly and kept asking us how we were doing. Our favorites are the chocolate torte and cheese torte. All had great presentations. My two year old finished almost the entire chocolate torte! While it's not a restaurant for kids, we didn't have a melt-down in the public, so we were happy. The atmosphere is contemporary and modern. Our kids loved it there and kept talking about it."

  • "This was a night where Martin crafted a four course meal, plus hors d' ouevres, to accompany six different Rieslings. Simply put, it was a great evening at one of Kansas City's nicest restaurants."

  • "This place is amazing. Food is superb and the ever-changing menu brings fresh, new delights to the menu that are unexpected but totally work. Service is great."

  • "Went to a Prix Fixe dinner tonight celebrating the different varieties of Reisling. Astonishingly good and unusual five-course meal with wine pairings. Sign up for the Affare alerts so you don't miss the next wine pairings dinner! Excellent evening. Thank you Katrin and Martin!"

  • "I stopped in for lunch this week, and so enjoyed the experience that I went back for brunch today. I've been fortunate to travel to Germany several times. The restaurant offers some typical German dishes, but elevates them to a new level. There are also a few dishes that you'd be hard to find in the Midwest. I really struggled to pick from the menu... But everything ordered was really delicious. Lots of thought and attention went into the detail and presentation. I will definitely be going back. Great atmosphere also."

  • "I was really excited about trying Affare - but was disappointed with our experience. It was more stuffy and formal than I was expecting for a German restaurant. Our food was good but not outstanding. The restaurant was only half full but our waitress was not very attentive. We had all eaten our entire meals before she checked if everything was okay and one of our party was missing an extra side they ordered. Once we pointed it out it came after our meal when desert was being served. I travel to Germany and Austria frequently and was excited about a place I could go to enjoy that food here in KC. Our entire group ordered off the Traditional menu - we had schnitzel and sauerbraten were not very impressed. I really wanted to love it!"

  • "Was in town for business and saw many positive reviews about Affare. Decided to check it out for a dinner by myself. Sat at the bar and had great service from Brian (I think....). Good selection of beer, unfortunately they were out of Erdinger (my favorite German beer). Had the Badische Schneckensuppe to start, very tasty and then Quail Ballantine for the main course which also tasted amazing. Highly recommend making a stop to Affare, I'll be stopping back here next time I'm in town."

  • "Everything we had at our table was delicious. The portion size was noticibly modest for the price. The addition of a "take home breakfast" was a nice touch."

  • "We had requested a table in the lounge on our reservation, but when we arrived our "reserved" table was right by the front door and no where near the lounge area. We had intended on 2-for-1 appetizers and drinks before attending the opera, but this was not what we received. Service was a bit slow, but that's to be expected as busy as the were (which was not the norm we usually experience). We asked if we could order off the bar menu, and we were allowed to do that, so it did work out fine for what we intended to order, but no financial deal for us. Drinks were delicious (but slow to be made and delivered). We love Affare, and will return often, but it does need to address issues when crowded and busy."

  • "We chose a dinner and an opera and got vouchers for Affre. What a find! The wait staff were attentive and helpful the setting was elegant and they were very conscious of the need to get us to the opera on time. We enjoyed the experience very much. The food was prepared by professionals; definitely not like going to Denny's. We missed out on the birthday desert experience where the chef brings out a sheet of glass and builds various deserts; just not enough time. Maybe next time."

  • "It was awhile since I took my wife out. I did not select Affäre but I am very satisfied with the selection. All staff was positive and very friendly but not fake. Our waitress did a fine job selecting wine for my wife. Overall a great time."

  • "This is my second experience here, and I have enjoyed both meals cery much. The Elk is out of this world, and the scallops were perfect. Excellent and informed service, nice wine selection. The space itself is a bit "industrial" for my taste, but for such beautiful food, it is an incosequential matter. Going back..soon."

  • "Affare served extremely varied and delicious food in a classy atmosphere by very friendly and helpful servers. Katie explained the food and menu and was appropriately attentive. She and the restaurant get a high 5."

  • "This gem of a restaurant is well worth it! Hidden in the crossroads, it's easy to miss, but once you find it you'll want to return. BTW it's not hard to find, just easy to overlook if you're not looking - the only restaurant on that side of the street. Anyway, the happy hour specials are what keeps us coming back. You have to dine in the bar area, but they have excellent drink specials and 2-for-1 appetizers. The full menu is also delicious and well worth the dining experience and is reasonably priced for dining. The chef is creative and has many different takes on some great classics that continue to impress our tastebuds. We've already planned our next visit and are bringing guests from out of town. A great deal & wonderful food."

  • "We went with a group of 5 (had a reservation). We had heard great things about the restaurant and wanted to try it; we were celebrating a birthday. Upon being seated it took nearly 15 minutes to be greeted and receive water. Then, when asked for a wine list, he only brought one. It would have been nice if he had brought 2, one for each side of the table. Then, when we asked for just a minute to decide our drinks, he left and didn't return for another 10 minutes. We finally got drinks about 40 minutes in. We were certainly in no hurry, we enjoy DINING, not rushing through a meal, but this was a bit ridiculous. We finally ordered around 50 minutes in to our experience. Food came out about an hour and 15 minutes in. IT WAS DELICIOUS."

  • "We were passing through Kansas City on a coast-to-coast trip and discovered Affare on Open Table. We weren't up for the usual plate-hiding KC steak and were looking for lighter fare. Traditionally, German cuisine can also be on the heavier side - hunk of pork on a bone kind of stuff. Affare presented a completely different twist on German/Euro influenced dishes - well-blended flavors, delightful sauces, highly creative presentations. So impressed were we that we had lunch there two days in succession - first choice was the home-made wurst, second time the elk - both were excellent. The service was also thoughtful and efficient. A sophisticated choice for dining in KC. Looking forward to another delightful Affare the next time through town!"

  • "I had never been here before and had heard wonderful things about it and I was not disappointed. The entire evening was delicious. Be sure ask about a most special dessert. Every head in the restaurant was glued to our table as Pastry Chef Jackson "Painted Our Table" with a cart full of spectacular ingredients"

  • "Affare is one of the most exciting restaurants we have come across in our recent travels throughout the US. We loved the fusion of French and German cuisines, but I was especially pleased that the chef included several traditional German selections as well. We started our evening at Affare at their bar which included several interesting cocktails, a very nice selection of wines, and a great selection of traditional German beers. Our waiter was extremely knowledgeable and very helpful in guiding us through the menu and the young lady at the front was so pleasant and easy to work with. We will be back and tell many others."

  • "The food was great and the prices right. The service was a little slow but I realized someone may not have shown up for work in the kitchen in a snowy freezing night. Other than that it was great."
    Dined on 3/1/2014
  • "Nice place overall. I would not call it a 'true' German restaurant, but certianly German influenced. Food was good, but three of the four plates were sparse in quantity of food. The 'Bowl' of soup would be better described as a large cup. My wifes meal was good- but lacked a traditional gravy and without it was a little dry. Cheese plate was great! Service was good, but slow and infrequent- especially as they were not busy. Was dark, I needed to use phones flashlight to read the small type on the menu. I will go back, but only occassionally- as the value/portion size is not great. KC needs German restaurant options I was hopeful for Affare."

  • "I've never been disappointed in this restaurant on the several times I've visited. I don't prefer the German part of the menu but a lot of the offerings could be called continental. Always a good selection of fish."

  • "This restaurant felt friendly from the moment we entered. Our waiter was both knowledgeable and creative. We needed a gluten free entree and the waiter and chef worked together to provide the perfect dish. The food was excellent, served with a flair. We will come again."

  • "Chef Martin puts a new, modern twist into every dish in the menu. Everything is fabulous on the taste buds. The servers are extraordinarily attentive. Katrin is always accommodating and gracious!"

  • "The food is varied and unusual, although it lacks in serving size quantity and is often not served as hot as it should. We also missed having salt and pepper on the table to add any flavor we desired. The service is fine. You will most likely miss the entrance, as it is an old warehouse, but this leads to the mystery of this place. A little pricey for casual dining, so save your money and cash it in for a special occasion at the Affare."

  • "Affare stands in a class of its own in KC and rises to my Top 5 favorite restaurants worldwide. Generally, a superb overall experience at a restaurant brings me back. Rarely if ever do I desire to return to a restaurant because of the menu alone. My husband and will return to Affare as soon as possible for the uniqueness and amazing menu."
