A word from Affaire
Cozy Affaire french bistro & lounge brings a Parisian touch to the lower east side's gastro-club scene. The bi-level labyrinth-like French lounge is designed to create an inviting space that mixes classic bistro looks - the weathered wood ceilings, exposed brick walls - and shadowy chandelier glow of a chateau. The Den upstairs has a pillow-lined banquette with dimply lit chandeliers and a huge red lampshade in the open air storefront, the mood is set for some adult fun. Below the restaurant down the narrow staircase there is a dual-level basement comprising of Candle Lounge and a Gold Room outfitted with antique mirrors, gold painted seclusive nooks and crannies.

Chef Edgar Navarrete of La Mediterranee and Cafe du Soleil has designed a menu inspired partly by recipes from owner Andrew Krauss's Parisian mother. The full menu is offered both up and downstairs.

  • Great food, horrible management

It took 45 minutes before they even took our drink orders. They got at least 1 thing wrong every course and of course "forgot" to take it off the bill even tho we pointed it out to them course by course. The food we did get tho was absolutely delicious and very reasonably priced. The crowning blow tho was as my 6'2" 190 pound friend friend crawled between the packed tables, the owner (or maybe manager. We weren't sure.) said maybe it was time for him to lose weight.

I went there for brunch and the service was virtually non-existant. There were only a few other people in there and we didn't even get the basic necessities--salt and pepper (when I went up to the bar to grab salt, our server who was folding napkins or something said "I could have gotten you that", like he was offended). I got there before my friend and they filled up my water, once--not one refill, and never filled my friend's glass. They did not come back during our meal once to see if we needed anything (more drinks would have been nice). And when we got our food and I asked the ketchup and hot sauce, the guy said "well I have to go to the kitchen and get it so it might take awhile. Do you still want it?".

We ate at the restaurant with another couple apres theater. Three of our party had the beef bourginon. It was flavorful but nothing special. Ordered the sundae for dessert was just okay. The service was the issue. The servers really meant well, but their execution left something to be desired. Slow and inattentive. We will not return, and would not recommend to a friend.

Sexy and dimly-lit, this is the perfect date spot. They also have a burlesque show/lounge downstairs on the weekends. Would recommend for a date or a girl's night out. Try the roast chicken or the mussels. My friends had the vegetable risotto and loved it as well. Would definitely recommend.

The food was good, ambiance better, but the service was some of the poorest I have experienced. First, the server knew nothing about the wine list or wine in general. Then, after ordering our first round of drinks and it taking about 10+ minutes, server returned to say they didn't have the wine my friend initially ordered. Fine. But it took about an additional 20+ minutes to get her a drink because they were either out or so unbelievably slow. And there was no apology or attention paid to the obvious fact that it was taking so long. As a person in the food industry, it was frustrating to see such a small wine list, made even smaller by being out of things, but also that the server didn't know the first thing about his product.

Affaire was an awful experience. The service is some of the worst I've seen in 30 years of living in NYC. Which is a shame because the ambiance is great, and the food, when it finally did arrive an hour and a half after ordering it, was not bad. I have noticed other reviews complaining about the slowness of the kitchen - these owners must have rocks in their heads if they think New Yorkers will put up with that for long.

Cute venue. They have a burlesque show on Friday nights for an extra fee. A bit risque, but that's NYC. It turns in to a nightclub after hours but we didn't stay for that. The menu was good and the food tasty. Reasonable prices.

Be sure you request to be seated upstairs! We were put down in the basement, which smelled very musty, and weren't even given a real table. They pulled two side tables and some rickety chairs to seat a makeshift table of five (which, if they didn't have room for us, they shouldn't have taken the reservation). To make matters worse, we were eating late, and halfway through our meal the dining room turned into a night club. It was a disaster compared to how nice it seemed when we walked through the upstairs dining room.

Overall an amazing experience. Took some friends from out of town and decided to see the burlesque show. The whole experience was a lot of fun and the food was amazing. Not one bad thing about it.

We enjoyed the escargot. The flavor of the macaroni and cheese was tasty but the overall dish was not our favorite. We were told the half chicken came with potatoes but we were later informed that the waitress made a mistake. The dish, especially the sauce, was delicious. However, they gave us a very small amount of sauce. We asked for more but had finished our meals before it arrived. The sangria was not as potent compared to similar restaurants. We probably would not order this again. There was a lot more fruit juice than wine. For the most part the service was good. The waitress seemed to get a little flustered once she got a rush of RSVPs at 9pm. I would probably go again for the half chicken.
