A word from Adega Grill
From the moment you enter, tones of old world yellows, stone fireplaces, wrought iron cellar gates and sconces, soft candlelight, coves with upholstered sofa seating and friendly staff, it's an undeniable inviting space, nothing short of extraordinary. Two special occasion tables with antique throne chairs and live piano music add to the intimacy. Two romantic dining rooms cater to an elegant crowd, while the long narrow bar gathers a friendly and fun bunch nightly.

The cuisine truly upholds the name of Fine Portuguese/Spanish Dining, seafood and fish, organic meats, the freshest ingredients and to maintain the tradition, huge portions are to be expected. The menu is seasonal and in addition to a varied selection of delectable dishes to satisfy any palette, daily specials are always featured. The wine list with over 180 selections is an ambitious one that keeps growing, but sure not to disappoint the discriminating connoisseur.

Diner Reviews

  • "Adega Grill is a truly authentic Portuguese / Spanish restaurant in Newark. Don't miss the paella, chourico portugues and the grilled octopus, among many of the unbelievable dishes we have had. After dinner, enjoy a night cap and cigar on their outdoor patio, while enjoying good music and fun crowds."

  • "My husband and I celebrated our anniversary dinner. The service and chicken in garlic sauce was juicy and fantastic. A little noisy from a small dinner party going on. Would for sure go back and eat dinner again."

  • "Lovely ambience for intimate dinner or special occasion. Menu offers delicious items so there's something for everyone. Friendly staff. I would recommend to anyone, but leave young kids at home so you and other diners can enjoy the relaxed atmosphere. "

  • "Went there Saturday night with my wife and it was wonderful! Service was friendly and attentive without being overbearing. Ambiance and decor was rich and romantic without being gaudy. Most of all, the food was great, prepared with care and presented well. I had the steak, she had the surf/turf, both excellent and enough to bring home for another meal. Adega is a bit more expensive than other restaurants in the Ironbound section but is well worth it. The steak was $25 but enough for 2 meals = $12.50 per steak! "

  • "good restaurant for a large group. we had a wonderful round table in the back room. we had an early dinner before a show and we were the only party in the room. the staff was very attentive."

  • "Though I really enjoy the food and the ambience, I was insulted when they added the gratuity to my check for just two people! I had paid and given a generous tip, and thankfully double-checked my bill. I was upset! I called the waiter and host over, then asked for my cash tip back. (It was twice the amount that they had tacked-on)! I've been there several times, but it was the first time I was dressed casually. It really offended me and I haven't been back since."

  • "Overall some of the best Portuguese food in the Northeast - definitely one of the best, if not the best, in NJ. Highly recommend for a quiet date night, an early dinner with the family, or a corporate event. Prices are a little on the higher side, but the portions are very generous and the overall quality of the food and the presentation makes it worthwhile."

  • "Every three months 12 girlfriends get together to enjoy eating together and then we go to a show in the downtown area. Adega Grill was recommended by one of the girls after they had attended a meeting there. I must say they were very accommodating since our party didn't arrive altogether .The food was presented beautifully and it more than delicious, each person was very satisified with my choice of venue."

  • "Made us uncomfortable from the moment we entered the restaurant. Can not return and it's okay bc the are many excellent eatin establishments with a more pleasant environment. "

  • "Awesome food...and a Sangria that was very enjoyable...The portions were large my son enjoyed the steak that I brought home."

  • "I was surprised it wasn't very busy on a Friday evening. The service was extremely attentive, so much so that my dinner companion complained to me about how frequently they checked up on us. I had the Salada de Verão (Mixed field greens w/ nuts, dried cranberries, gorgonzola cheese & seasonal fruit in our house dressing) and it was great. For my entre I had the Camarão Jumbo Recheado (Jumbo shrimp stuffed w/ crabmeat, served w/ crisp Spanish style potatoes, saffron rice & fresh vegetables). This was also very good. I had the flan for desert and it was disappointing - a little rubbery. The white sangria was very nice. To top it all off, I even easily found a parking spot on the street one block away."

  • "Service and food are always great at this wonderful restaurant. We had a great Easter Brunch and were the only table of non Portuguese speaking diners. A real testament to the authenticity of the food and experience. "

  • "The food is delicious although the portions are large enough to feed a village. If you can't take home a doggie bag, it's disheartening to see so much of it go to waste. The wine list is unnecessarily expensive: lowest priced for bottles go for $35 and prices rise precipitously from there. Best bet is to buy wine by the glass or half bottles, which are relatively inexpensive ($12.50) and eminently drinkable."

  • "First the good: the staff was wonderful. Couldn't have been more gracious. Professional Not as quiet as we hoped for The bad - disappointed in the food. My garlic shrimp - something that so many before raved about - didn't taste garlicky and was very hard. I forgot to take the uneaten "doggy bag" home - perhaps it was Freudian. The paella my husband and son had they enjoyed - but wouldn't give it 4 stars. The wine was delicious - wish I remember the name. The oreo cheesecake was fine - but certainly not why we would choose this restaurant - and not fair to evaluate based upon this dessert. "

  • "A short walk from Newark Penn Station is one of the best restaurants in the NYC area! If you are in the mood for the total Portuguese experience; then this is THE PLACE! LARGE portions;extensive wine list includes Portuguese Table Wines! (And those in "the know" are very aware most Portuguese wines never make it across the "pond" as they are consumed throughout Europe!) Delightful, knowledgeable staff add to your total dining pleasure! You owe it to yourself to make plans to dine at Adega Grill. We will return!! Oh, and if you are on a budget;consider this: our party of 9 drank, ate, enjoyed dessert for UNDER $600!!!["

  • "What a delightful dinner! We ordered the shrimp in garlic and chorizo for appetizers. Four of us shared two orders of the seafood paella for 2. The lobster, shrimp, scallops and other seafood were fresh, sweet and succulent and beautifully presented. The red sangria was excellent as were the desserts, flan and lemon tartufo. We can't wait to go back."

  • "We wanted some seafood on a whim Saturday night and decided to head to the Iron Bound district. the portions were big and the sangria hit the spot."

  • "Every once in a while we get the urge for Portuguese food, and being a master of the motto "if it ain't broke, don't fix it", we return to Adega Grill. This visit was no exception: Delicious white sangria, A huge platter of grilled seafood (for 2), yellow rice, and Spanish potatoes. All fresh, delicious, properly cooked, and reasonably priced. Will return!"

  • "Seems small from the front, but is roomy inside. Our party of 7 were comfortable. Excellent menu, large portions, very good wine selection. Vegan-friendly if you tell the waiter (they prepared a grilled vegetable pallela for one of the guests at our dinner). Parking can be tricky, so be sure to leave plenty of time to find a spot. They do have a dedicated parking lot, if you can find it. This area has many one-way streets. The neighborhood is one of my favorites for dining in NJ."

  • "We have been coming to Adega Grill for over 10 years. It is our favorite restaurant in NJ. The food is delicious and the service is excellent. This was our 8th New Year's Eve at Adega. We go early so it isn't crowded yet therefore rather quiet. We are a group of 8 people. The service is terrific. We are never disappointed and we will be back. I highly recommend this restaurant."

  • "There are so many Portuguese restaurants in the Ironbound, I thought I'd try a "steakhouse" instead which is the way Adega is promoted but once there it seemed like just another Portuguese restaurant with a more upscale look. The chef is surely the same one working at Iberia or Spain or.... I asked the waiter, who was fairly inarticulate and not personable in any way what the restaurant was known for and he said Seafood. Go figure, in a steakhouse. No complaints about the food, it was okay, just okay, but really this place is confused about what it is trying to project, what it is trying to deliver and how it is delivered. I'd just go to a standard Portuguese restaurant - you know what you are getting and you get it."

  • "Perfect for Pre Prudential Center Events. Big portions, cute decor, quality food and exceptional service. Pricing was reasonable as well. Parking can be tricky, its a busy street."

  • "I've been to Adega a couple times this year with co-workers and can't wait to go back with family and friends. The bar is narrow, a little loud, but great fun. The restaurant has a great ethnic flair, is upscale, and the food is amazing. The chourico cooked table side is a great appetizer, their version of a steak with a fried egg on it is a more refined take on a Portuguese classic and their flan might be second to none. Worth dealing with the traffic at rush hour to get there!"

  • "I have been here several times, but I never tried the paella before, it was spectacular!, The best of the Best! There is not comparison, I highly recommend it. We were a big party and the service was special. We will definite go back."

  • "Went here with a party of six for Thanksgiving. The ambiance is that of old euro opulence, with its fine decor. Great for a romantic dinner date. The service is commendable. The waiters speak limited english so dont converse in length. The only con is that some staff stand around which will remind you of being overlooked by a bodyguard. The food was great. Each member of my party had a different entree and all loved it. Large portions beyond a great value of $27+. The paelha was my entree and would feed a family of 8. It was a lot of food indeed. However, good food with ample seafood chicken and a fresh lobster to top it off. The porterhouse steak is huge. The turtle cheesecake is a hood choice to end the night. Its marble chocolate"

  • "I have been to a number of Portuguese restaurants in the area, and this is now my favorite. Food was great, and the decor is interesting, pretty and cozy (it was a frezing night)."

  • "The restaurant is nice. The plate portions are enough for two. The quality of the food is good. I had the surf and turf. The lobster was good but the filet mignon was not a good quality of meat, it was gray. My wife had the skirt steak which was very good. They have an nice selection of wines, even though the wine I selected was not available. Ok, now to the service. The waiter that was taking care of our table needs to be more attentive. He took our order and we never saw him again until I asked another waiter to get our waiter so we can receive the check . Normally the waiter comes by once or twice to check on everything and pour wine when your glass is empty, but no, never saw him. The bus boy / assistant did everything."

  • "Went to our normal go to place for Spanish last Saturday night and since we were just 4 people the wait was over an hour and the noise level was way too loud to have a nice conversation. Pulled out my phone an went to OPEN TABLE and found Adega Grill, got a reservation for 4 for 8:30, drove over and by accidentt found the Aldega free parking lot. YESSS! Restaurant was awesome, decore was nice, service was very attentive and spot on, and the food was really very good if not better than our nomal spot. Sangria was the delish Would highly recommend Aldega Grill from now on. A must go place"
