A word from Ad Hoc
Thomas Keller’s ad hoc, which literally means "for this purpose," was originally intended to be a temporary restaurant, open during the development of a very different concept. But, due to its loyal following, it was decided that it must be a permanent fixture in Yountville. ad hoc serves a prix fixe, 4-course chalkboard menu, changing daily. Food is served family style and reminiscent of the comfort food with which Chef Keller grew up.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "The food offered in the restaurant was different from the food on the internet posted menu"

  • "Another reason to visit Napa Valley. Ad Hoc felt as easy and approachable as the environment that surrounds it. Friendly and helpful staff and a chef selected menu as the singular option, give diners the feeling that you're in the home environment of one of the best chefs in the country. Food was fresh and delicious; the only item in my least favorite category was the ice cream sandwich dessert - felt less home made, more "too perfect" in it's creation. Look forward to going back to see what the chef has on the menu any other lovely evening of the week."

  • "This is simple food but the very best of everything. These chefs really bring out the flavor in everything they prepare. Unfortunately the acoustics make for a very noisy environment, and I would not go here with more than a party of 2."

  • "I thought the service was great. The entree and dessert were not what I expected for the price and a pre-set menu. I was disappointed in the meal, but the service was great."

  • "Probably the best service out of any restaurant that I have been to in a long time. We went on fried chicken night Monday at a friends recommendation. Everything was fantastic. I plan on returning on my next trip to wine country."

  • "Food was very good had brunch but the only good item that was temperature hot was the coffee, all other items were not."

  • "Roasted beet salad was superb. We were skeptical about the Tami Grillo wine pairing at first but it complemented the salad beautifully. Flat iron steak was seared perfectly. The Napa cabernet pairing was an acceptable choice at a fair price, not the most splendid but it worked. The cheese course was very good, paired with a dry Riesling that we expected to hate but found surprisingly delicious. Dessert was two large pieces of chocolate cake paired with port; the cake was good but not spectacular. As part of the dining experience it's important to note that Ad Hoc has great energy but it can be very loud. It's casual and fun when you're in a celebratory mood but not a place for quiet conversation, at least not on busy nights."

  • "Loved the food from the fried chicken to the fresh oysters... everything our group of 6 tried was fabulous (steak tartar, hanger steak, mac and cheese, fried chicken, oysters, shrimp and salad)! Great ambiance, beautiful space but with a relaxed feel."

  • "The food at Ad Hoc is insane. It competes with FL on every aspect and Keller spared to detail. There is only one option for each meal, but you just need to trust them. The ingredients are the absolute best and everything is prepared perfectly. Can't wait to go back."

  • "I have been to this restaurant before but this last visit was horrible. The pork was over cooked and under spiced. We sent it back and it came back cooked properly but it was still under seasoned. While we were waiting for the pork to be recooked they sent out dried out fish cakes for us to eat. They were not eaten either and the second attempt at the pork was not eaten. Dessert was ice cream with jarred sauces to make a sundae. Not good at all. The whole meal was very disappointing."

  • "We had a pre-fixed brunch of Country fried steak and eggs - Thomas Keller style. Always an experience from start to finish. Thomas Keller can do no wrong in my eyes. Just go already!"

  • "Unbeknownst to us this restaurant has a four course set menu which changes on a daily basis. The food was delicious and large platters of each entree and mains were put in front of guests to help themselves. I could not eat the cake for desert, just too much. We had a 9pm booking and had to wait 20 minutes until our table was available, bit annoying. Very noisy and very busy which adds to the atmosphere."

  • "Went here on a recommendation. Amazing food and service. They were also able to accommodate my gluten allergy with some yummy options."

  • "This is another one of Thomas Keller's outstanding restaurants. Great food, great service. Menu are pre fixe so each day is a surprise."

  • "Yes, and worth every penny! The fried chicken is fantastic - maybe the best I've ever had, but it is the side dishes really bring it all together. Like all TK restaurants, the service is just perfect. The room(s) can be a little noisy, but not so much so that it made conversation difficult. Overall, this is one of my favorite places to dine - it's casual, laid-back, with great food and service."

  • "Ad Hoc is a great destination for voracious eaters. Everything is served family style in great quantities and I suspect that the quality may suffer a tad from preparation of massive batches of the same food. On my most recent visit we were there for the heralded fried chicken night. The chicken is good and moist but the coating looked over cooked. Two people were served eight pieces of chicken, that seems excessive to me, and a waste."

  • "Restaurant is set menu only. Servers are extremely knowledgeable, pleasant and helpful. The menu was an absolute WINNER the day we went. All courses including the additional one, which was chocolate chip pancakes, were marvelous. Can't wait to return."

  • "Loved the ambiance, service, and food. Will return in the near future to dine again!"

  • "So, at first we were a bit shocked to learn there was only one choice on the menu. Certainly made it easy to order. And of course since it is a Thomas Keller restaurant we had to assume the one choice would be delicious. And it was. Very reasonable price and a great dining experience."

  • "The food was outstanding and plenty of it! We will be back."

  • "Being a Thomas Keller restaurant, we were expecting this place to be great; however, we were quite disappointed with the overall experience. To be fair, we've been to worse places, but out of all of our restaurant experiences (Farm, CIA, Farmstead) this was our least favorite. The menu that night was BBQ, and being Southerners we have high expectations... the ribs were ok but definitely more sauce than meat. The fried chicken was overdone so the breading tasted burnt and the chicken was overcooked. Not to mention that we found a hair in our chicken plate. But the dessert was fantastic... berry crisp. We would probably try it again, but there are other choices in front of this one."

  • "The meal was rushed, mediocre and overpriced. It was the popular fried chicken night and we looked forward to a memorable evening. The chicken was good, it was not exceptional. This left me hoping the hype was over exceptional service. Unfortunately, every time my guest or I set our utensils down to relax our meal and attempt conversation, a different server would come by and ask to take our family style serving and plates. Once or even twice I would have said attentive service. However, it happened repeatedly and got very frustrating! we were in and out with all the courses in less than 45 minutes! Ok fried chicken & BBQ rushed through was not worthy of a $150 tab without alcohol for 2 when gratuities were added."

  • "Seriously good food here. both times we have been Ad Hoc impressed, but there was a catch each time. The first time, the meal included a grilled cheese sandwich. Fine, if it had been the best grilled cheese imaginable. It wasn't. Everything else was amazing. The second time, our main dish was roasted lamb shank. Grilled lamb chops are about as much lamb as I ever do, this lamb shank was gigantic, and very fatty. I have no doubt it was prepared beautifully, but giant hunks of fatty lamb is just not my thing. Everything else was fantastic.. I would recommend this to friends who are up for the adventure of not knowing what your meal might be, but for folks who are fearful of that concept, no. I'd go again, but it's not for everyone."

  • "Made reservations the night before via Open table. Arrived on time and seated immediately. Service was excellent. Brunch was a pre fix menu. That day the entree was a corned beef hash. I expected to be blown away because, it is a Thimas Kellar establishment, but alas, the corned beef was rather chewy and warm as was the chocolate chip pancakes. A little disappointed in the brunch overall. The waitstaff/service was attentive and helpful and made up for the food. It would be idea for Ad Hoc to post their brunch menu online as well, since they already do that with their dinner menus."

  • "Their Sunday brunch was amazing. They offered a vegetarian option for the entree, which was fantastic. The chocolate chip pancakes are to die for. And the Bloody Marys are spicy and garnished with yummy okra and olives!"

  • "Amazing experience. Perfect service, perfect food and very generous portions served family style."

  • "I liked the family style aspect of the prefix menu. there was more than enough for a huge meal and I brought back the main ham shank and it was wonderful as left overs. The vegi's were so good I even asked to take home the left overs. They accomodated my Chocolate allergy. Will go back in a heart beat."

  • "I had admittedly high expectations, but our food was not as good as we had hoped. The service was very good, however."

  • "Great casual dinner with a friend. I would assume anyone who is going to dine here understands that it is a set menu that changes daily and that it is family style. We started with a silky lettuce salad with orange slices, turnips (it worked!), and peas. Main course was perfectly cooked lamb shoulder with lightly sauteed veggies. Dessert was a sundae of vanilla ice cream and a trio of sauces. Everything was excellent, although the dessert might have been my least favorite course if you pushed me to name one. Professional service."

  • "Food was average. My mother could cook chicken as good. Beans were average but good and the cupcake was good. The boucharet was horrible. This place is too loud and I am sure people only go cause its a Thomas Keller restaurant . I won't go back. Go to redds next door it is excellent . Thank u that's all move out."

  • "Went for Brunch. Food was great! Was hoping for their famous fried chicken, but we really enjoyed their version of ham and eggs. They were served with braised collards and oven roasted sweet potatoes. My husband said that was the best ham he had ever eaten! Another great TK experience!"

  • "Was served ham and eggs for brunch. Was good and solidly prepared, but I guess I was expecting something a little more impressive than ham and eggs for $34."

  • "Exceptional restaurant but wished we had known about & had reserved an outside table."

  • "Our waiter was attentive to our special needs. Immediately investigated preparation and ingredients where he didn't already know. Food was very good. Prix fix menu. As expected, very extensive wine list with pairings offered. Good ambience."

  • "Awesome food, great staff service, and fantastic bloody marys!"

  • "This is the second time we have eaten at ad hoc (plus once at addendum). The food is amazing, always really fresh ingredients that are put together in an unexpected way. The wait staff is very friendly, and easy going, but professional. It is a bit noisy, the decor is what I would calll utilitarian but elegant. I also brought my 3 1/2 year old daughter and it was good for her. I would definitely go back again!"

  • "Read chick/waffle was awesome; expected less with ham. Also had a baby with us as ending girls wknd trip & went for a brunch. Walking in, noticed the fam-friendly vibe & spacious room, knew it was a perfect place for us. Had a table full of bikers & had a minor celeb, so good mix of peeps. Not of TK, but been to 2 TireCo starred rest, so I could compare, I think. Food was beautiful & appropriate in presentation & taste! Luved casual family style & seasoned perfectly! For the price, totally worth it! Oh, when parking, one of the chefs noticed that my friend was running over a space blocker. He stopped & informed us. We knew then we'd like the food by his attention to detail. My group was foodies, so trust the groups judgment. All thumbs up!"

  • "And we weren't sure about the "one menu" idea, but there's a reason Thomas Keller is the man. The food was amazing, and the pork loin was so tender and full of flavor! Why can't I get my pork to taste like that?! Great meal, with every course thought out perfectly, and a perfect complement to the one before. We went for it and added the extra dish of Skate, which neither of us had ever tried before. Excellent!"

  • "Good for a group, generous portions LOUD restaurant. Shows that high-attention food can be fun, not stuffy. NOT the place to go if you are vegetarian or do not eat pork."
