A word from Ad Hoc
Thomas Keller’s ad hoc, which literally means "for this purpose," was originally intended to be a temporary restaurant, open during the development of a very different concept. But, due to its loyal following, it was decided that it must be a permanent fixture in Yountville. ad hoc serves a prix fixe, 4-course chalkboard menu, changing daily. Food is served family style and reminiscent of the comfort food with which Chef Keller grew up.Continued

  • "We always enjoy our dinner at Ad Hoc but tonight's menu was particularly well executed. The salad was a blend of yellow watermelon, cantaloupe, kalamata olives, creamy feta and shaved fennel. Delicious! The grilled ribeye steak with flavorful veggies and polenta were perfectly cooked. The steak was served medium-rare. It was tender, juicy and well-seasoned. Yum! Dessert was described as espresso panna cotta with brownies. The brownies turned out to be gluten-free and lacked the usual structure of a regular brownie but were full of chocolate flavor. The panna cotta tasted more like a butterscotch pudding with a hint of espresso. It was quite good. A steaming pot of French press coffee paired well with the dessert. We'll be back."

  • "I will never undersatnd how a fixed menu and reservations only can cause someone to wait 25 minutes for dessert. It was offered as a frozen Ice Cream Sandwich w/fresh berries. It was served soft and w/FROZEN berries. The server lied about the problem. I expect more from a Thomas Keller operation."

Food was overall great - especially the vegetables' preparation and clear quality of and treatment taken towards ingredients overall. Some dishes were a little heavy on the salt though, and wish there were more alternatives or options for those who do not do as well with dairy."

  • "Made our reservations months in advance of our visit to Napa Valley. As luck had it we were there on a Monday and it was chicken night. Not your ordinary chicken mind you. This was fabulously prepared, juicy yet crispy, favorably spiced but not over spiced. Loved the prix fixe menu. All the stress of decision making is gone, just sit back and enjoy as Thomas Keller's staff works their magic. The meal was served family style and served in All Clad cookware, a different but nice touch. More food then two people can eat for dinner. The staff packs up the leftovers for you to take home. Everything as delicious especially the pecan/chocolate pie and the wait staff were flawless."

  • "We believe that the restaurant should post that "Fried Chicken Mondays" is not on every Monday. Their absolutely delicious fried chicken is served every other Monday. We wondered why the restaurant was not completely full that night. Well it was an "off" Monday. When you have your heart set on a particular meal, and then you are offered something completely different, it was a bit disappointing. We had a round of cocktails, then excused ourselves. Next time we will call first!"

  • "Wow. We walked in with high expectations from a friend's recommendation. We were not disappointed! From the start, the service was impeccable - friendly, knowledgeable, and approachable. The food was equally fantastic. The menu the day we went was a Caesar salad, grilled ribeye, corn agnolotti, a cheese plate, and a stone fruit crostata. It was amazing. The flavors were intense but not overpowering and the recommended wine pairing went with each dish very well. I would highly recommend Ad Hoc to anyone. Yum!"

  • "I read a rave review about Ad Hoc in Travel and Leisure so I reserved a table during my recent Napa Valley visit. It did not disappoint! The menu is pre-fix, changes on a daily basis, and is very reasonably priced at $52. Our entrée was smoked sirloin with a mouth watering spinach red beans and rice. Very different and VERY good!"

I especially appreciate the leisurely pace and casual vibe of family style dining. We were lucky enough to be seated outside. The patio is pretty small, so noise level was very low - it was almost like dining on a private deck at someone's home. A great way to celebrate my husband's birthday."

If I had to pick a nit (which reviewers should do): the patio is not really scenic and on this particular night was loaded with bothersome little flies. But that's really a nit on an elephant.   • "We stop in at Ad Hoc on every visit to the wine country and this time the meal was outstanding ( as it alwasy is ). The menu for this evening was outstanding with a big thank you for the risotto...amazing....as was the bone in ribeye.....we loved the cheese course and the fresh fruit for the dessert course was a dynamic choice. This is one of the gems in Yountville and we always recommend it to anyone visiting the wine country. We are already looking forward to our next visit."

  • "we had filled out the diet questionnaire when making our open table reservation - no red meat. so we were a bit bummed to come for pre-fixed dinner on father's day to find that steak was on the menu. it is great that they offer an alternative, shrimp - but you have to pay $16 more - are you kidding me ? for this price ? I spoke to the waiter about our open table request, & they gave us a plate of vegetables in place of the steak. the ice cream for dessert with 3 toppings was a real treat, not your average sundae. I would eat here again, fresh food straight from the garden to the table. just think it was pricey for what we got, & portion size."

  • "I've eaten at the other Thomas Keller restaurants in Yountville and couldn't wait to eat at Ad Hoc. Since we were leaving to go home on Sunday I thought brunch would be a nice change to eating at the airport on the way home. What can I say, best brunch ever. Biscuits and gravy and scrambled eggs to die for. I am sure glad I don't live closer or I would way 400 lbs!"

  • "Experience was disgusting. Arrived on time for our reservation, yet had to wait for our table while other couples arrived and were seated straight away. Food in general was unimpressive. However, the most appalling part of the meal was the fried chicken, which was raw. It was so under-cooked that the table next to us made a comment about it. When the waitress was informed of this she proceeded to explain the “pinkness” was because the kitchen has issues with their sous-vide technique when there is a blood-line and should we have any suggestions to solve this she would be happy to pass it along to the chef. She then brought the rest of our meal out with a good dose of sarcasm. We cancelled our reservation the next night at Bouchon."

  • "Recently moved to the area and have dined at many of the restaurants. Food was fantastic, but I've had this thing with a couple Thomas Keller restaurants (Bouchon, now Ad Hoc) where the service really lacks. Very snobby, disinterested. This is in contrast to other Yountville and NV establishments. Service annoying enough that it makes us less likely to go in the future, which is a shame since the food was so good and would have been nice to have this be a go-to place."

  • "We went in with great expectations. The menu for the night looked fantastic. Grilled Ribeye. We love grilled ribeye. What they actually served at prime rib. Fatty and juicy. We asked our server how it was prepared. He said it was seared on the stove and roasted in the oven. I just couldn't understand the difference in what was advertised vs what was served. The homemade sauce was delicious, though. The rest of the items were very good, not great. Cocktails and wine were good as well. Crostada for dessert was expertly made. Next time I'm in Yountville, I will probably go elsewhere."

  • "After great expectation at eating in a Thomas Keller restaurant, I was only disappointed. The main dish was a grilled ribeye, which was ordered medium rare but arrived medium well. The dish was bland and the meat tough. Not what you would expect from a restaurant of this caliber. We took the wine pairing, which was fair at best, extremely over priced and included only 1 California wine. Big disappointment."

  • "You only get one option for your meal here which is an interesting idea and really seems to work here as the food was very delicious and I ate things I would never order or cook myself. The portions were generous and each course was great. The service was fantastic--not hovering, but cool, relaxed and professional with a hip vibe. The decor is also very spare and elegant but not precious or uncomfortable."

This is how it's supposed to be, crispy outside and succulent inside.   • "Our server was unable to recommend a bottle of wine to accompany the prix fixe menu. This seemed odd and unacceptable in Napa! The salad was good but came with dressing on the side. At a restaurant like this I expect food to come from the kitchen perfectly prepared by the chef. The main was simple yet amazing. Perfectly prepared. The dessert was inventive and delicious. The vibe was hip and fun and the food was great!"

  • "I had dinner at Ad-Hoc in Napa Valley last week. I was assuming since the French laundry in my neighbor was so Great I would have the same if not better experience...I was very disappointed.. The food was marginal (served Rib eye streak) and I actually had to send it back. My date ordered a piece of Salmon (off the menu) since she does not eat meat and it came under cooked and also had to be sent back. The second worst part was after we spent the day in Napa we were charged a $25.00 fee for bringing in our own wine. The worst part was the bill 150 bucks for 2!! I would not recommend Ad-Hoc to anyone. MB"

  • "This was a special occasion dinner for my wife and myself while spending a long weekend in the Napa and Sonoma area. We we not disappointed. The restaurant itself was beautiful. Light and airy and not at all pretentious. The wait staff wears jeans and chef style smocks to keep it refined but casual at the same time. The food was everything the menu advertised. All four courses kept getting better and better. The staff was friendly and helpful in explaining the dishes. This is probably the best overall dining experience I have ever had. This will be a must for us on any return trip to the valley."

  • "The reviews had been a bit mixed when we looked at them but we went anyway. The menu is a 4 course fixed which changes every night. The standard of food though is very high and the staff excellent. You may get a course you are not excited about that is always possible on a fixed menu but we enjoyed the food and experience. Check the menu first it you are concerned or dislike some things."

  • "My boyfriend and I wanted to celebrate at a nice place in Napa without the prices of the French Laundry, so we went to the next best, Ad Hoc, also by Thomas Keller. What also attracted us there was the daily rotating menu. We had a salad course, main course, cheese plate, and then dessert. Everything was very delicious and very fresh. Additionally, all portions were large. I was almost full after the salad, but I made sure eat all of my courses and enjoyed everything thoroughly. It was $52 each for the fixed menu plus drinks. At the end I even had them box up the Buchon bread and leftover cheese & tapenade to find extra when I got home. Our whole experience was great!"
