Diner Reviews
  • "We wanted an incredible dining experience in San Francisco and that's exactly what we got. Would recommend to anyone. And the wine list is exceptional but also great picks by the glass. Staff was amazing and service impeccable."

  • "Loved the chef's little surprises! The appetizers and the pastas were fantastic. The small portions of each dish was a bonus, as it allowed us to try out the eclectic collection of food on the menu. I recommend the peach salad, the beef tartare, the duck, and the foie gras pasta. The lobster though, was slightly disappointing as it lacked taste. Desserts were ok, not too sweet which was a plus, but nothing special either. Overall, a good experience and a good find!"

  • "This is a true five-star restaurant with outstanding service staff and impeccable food. It is an excellent choice for a special occasion. There is no valet parking, but there is a parking lot directly across the street."

  • "The chef's 25 year anniversary menu was over the top. We are foodies and have dined at many 5 star restaurants in the Bay Area. Last nights dinner experience at Acquerello was absolutely mouth watering. The presentation, quality of foods, combination of flavors and service was divine. This is a restaurant that will impress. If you are looking to impress an important business client, special date, or celebrate a special milestone, this is the place."

  • "The kind of place you leave feeling ripped off. I know it is suppose to be fancy and "chique" with the small food portion but $300 per person to leave hungry is ridiculous. The food is good, not great, but good and staff is super nice, but nothing justifies the ridiculous price tag."

  • "We ordered the XXV Anniversary Chef's Tasting Menu with wine pairings. The dining room was beautiful yet quite comfortable and the staff were attentive and engaging. It was a truly memorable dining experience."

  • "Each bite was an explosion of flavors in our mouths ..... Our meal was outstanding. We live on the East Coast and would visit San Francisco just to dine at this wonderful restaurant again!!"

  • "At Acquerello expect the best. I'm an italian used to great food, but seldom if ever I found something so outstanding. Do not hesitate to go there."

  • "We ate here for our anniversary - what an ideal experience! Service, food, ambiance, etc. could not have been better. Maybe it is on the pricey side, but at Acquerello you certainly get what you pay for. We look forward to going back to determine whether it was a dream."

  • "Everything was fabulous and exceeded expectations. Four complimentary appetizers all delicious. Five of us 3 different entree's all spectacular. Only criticism is the $75 corkage whether you purchase an additional bottle there or not, open your own bottle-which is NOT on their excellent wine list, $75. Most I have ever paid for corkage here or abroad. Would I go back? A very enthusiastic YES! Although I do hope they review their corkage policy. They do know how to take care of their customers from the time you enter until the time you leave, one of the best staffs around."

  • "The only false note in our dinner at Acquerello was the server who was concerned that we were taking too long to order and eat and chided us like children. The food was delightful, the sommelier and his suggestions were both superior. I don't live in the state so my visits are not as frequent as I would like but I will be back. Ever food item was fresh and exquisitely prepared."

  • "We looked forward to an anniversary dinner, after previous wonderful experiences. We were disappointed. Brentwood corn and fresh peas are clearly available, and both are delicious - but in EVERYTHING?? My melon soup was cloyingly sweet, and my husband's tartare was laden with embellishments that obscured the flavor of the meat. Our corn and prawn risotto was extremely sweet from an excess of the corn, and once again was covered with pea tendrils and other "decorations" which made it look and taste cluttered. My entree, the salmon, was quite tasty, but covered with a pea tendril salad. My husband's lobster was poorly cooked and served with a corn mousse and garnished with more corn - once again too sweet. We left without dessert."

  • "My wife and I were celebrating our 12th wedding anniversary and we were very lucky to pick this particular restaurant. The service was incredible, from the wait staff, the sommeliers to the bussers, everyone was friendly and accommodating. I had work in the F&B industry for over 20 years and I am extremely impressed by the service at this place. The food, in addition, was spectacular, the presentation and the taste. Perfect, perfect, perfect. The wine list was great as well. Overall I can only recommend this venue. For both business and romantic porpoises, this place is perfect."

  • "I eat all my meals (lunch and dinner) in restaurants, and have for over 30 years. I am accustomed to bringing my own wine and paying a corkage fee. Normally this fee is waived if I also purchase a bottle of wine from the restaurant. At Acquerello, I brought a bottle of wine and purchased a bottle of wine. To my surprise, a corkage fee of $75.00 was charged for the bottle I brought to the restaurant. This fee was slight more than double the highest corkage fee I ever paid in the 30+ years I have been dining out in San Francisco. While the meal and service was delightful, I felt the imposition of this fee was both abusive and offensive."

  • "Transcendent! From start to finish this dining was the best of a lifetime. My friends and I are foodies and enjoy fine dining and wine pairing. Chef, Suzzete has perfected flavors and presentation over 25 years! The service was stealth, an yet friendly and enjoyable when engaged, noteably Raphael and Todd!! All our meal choices were perfection!! From the prefix menu, my selections were the Ahi tuna (most interesting complex dish of the night), prawn & corn risotto, and entrée of lobster! Raphael paired by the glass to start, recommended a world class wine, Vietti barolo '05, and we were at a pinnacle of perfection! Great cheeses, yummy & fun desserts, then a cart of profiterole treats added the final lovely touch! Cheers to 25 years in SF!"

  • "Acquerello is a real star. We had not dined there in quite a while after an unfortunate experience several years ago. In the interim, the décor, food and service have all been enhanced and updated. Incredible wine list that focuses on Italian wines; wonderful Italian themed food (don’t skip the pastas or the melon soup); and a sweet cart to send you off in the night. Portions are a bit small and the prices are a bit high, but it’s worth it. And you can hear your dinner companions as well. Great for romance or special occasions."

  • "Acquerello instantly becomes a special place as you enter and the beautifully appointed dining room, designed, furnished and illuminated with elegance and comfort in mind. We tried different dishes from the Prix-Fixe Menu, and all admired how artfully they were presented and how delicious they were. Smoked potato gnocchi with prosciutto and truffle, cuttlefish "tagliatelle", and slow-cooked pepper-crusted Scottish salmon were standout dishes, as were the rhubarb-port sorbet and bourbon-caramel semifreddo desserts. The wines recommended were perfectly paired with our food. We also loved the delicious savory and sweet "surprises" sent by the chef to begin and end our meal. It was a memorable evening of excellent cuisine and superb service."

  • "Always a treat at Acquerello! Highlights this time included smoked gnocchi, beef tartare, cheese selection and semifreddo. This is one of our favorite restaurants in the country. It certainly can't be half bad if Bill Cosby is dining nearby. Big night out, but worth it!"

  • "My favorite restaurant in many respects. I tried their only Chardonnay by the glass for $22 for a small pour. I didn't like it and said so when they asked if I wanted another. The wine guy indicated he couldn't get me what I described except by the bottle. Seems a classy place like that could have tried harder. Super beautiful and romantic place. Wonderful complimentary treats between courses. Desserts were excellent."

  • "Acquerello is a great find. the food is exceptional! tasty, inventive with beautiful presentation. the sommelier recommended a great white chardonny from northern Italy to start and we found a lovely red from Howell mountain in Napa that went well with everything. The rissoto and gnocchi were wonderful as were all the other dishes. not a miss in the lot. service was very professional yet warm and informative without being intrusive. The owner is on the floor participating with the service which is probably why it is so excellent. all the little treats before, during and at the end of the meal were super. Highly recommended!"

  • "Excellent food, prepared and served beautifully. Every single dish was an amazing explosion of taste, texture and aromas. We chose the pre fixe menu and selected 5 courses. As first time diners, the chef also included several "chef's surprises" that were outstanding. I can't say enough wonderful compliments to Chef Suzanne and her staff for a truly memorable birthday dinner. I can't wait to go back and try more items on the menu. And the service!! The best I've ever experienced in any restaurant...ever! Seamless transitions between courses, glasses always full, fresh napkins after each course, and timed perfectly. First class service. I'm out of adjectives...have to go get my thesaurus and finish! :=)"

  • "Night before last we had the most amazing event called dinner at the absolute best restaurant I've ever been to. The food and sparkling wine were like nothing I've ever enjoyed. The service was impeccable. We celebrated a wedding engagement in a remarkable and memorable manner. I highly recommend you try Acquerello if you are ever in San Francisco. Bring an empty belly and a full wallet and expect a complete reversal as you depart. However, the food and the experience are worth every calorie -- and every penny."

  • "I took my wife and two grown daughters there for dinner on a Saturday night. We had a fabulous time. This is one of San Francisco's finest restaurants and clearly one of the top, high end, Italian places. Like Gary Danko, but with Italian cuisine. Service is top notch, the room is relatively small, so reasonably intimate. We had the four course tasting menu (they also send several mini courses your way in addition) and each course was spectacular. We seldom ordered the same thing so there were about 12 different dishes served and each got raves. This is either a place for a special occasion (it was our anniversary) or a high end business expense dinner. Highly recommended."

  • "Sadly, I have to say this restaurant is grossly overrated. The service was fantastic, but the food was good not great and the cost was ridiculous - approximately $450 for two people including a $125 bottle of wine and four course meal. That is the most I have ever spent on a dinner and I would have said it fell short at even half the price. It was a major disappointment."

  • "This, by far, was my favorite restaurant experience during our week in San Francisco. I had an amazingly flavorful vegetarian meal, and my husband loved his steak. They even made a steak off the tasting menu for our daughter even though we didn't get the tasting menu. They compiled a salad for each of us based on our likes, and had a wonderful cheese selection. The waitstaff was so attentive that we felt like we were the only ones in the restaurant. The sommelier made great suggestions, and our waiter, Todd, was amazing. I really appreciated the quiet atmosphere and being able to carry on a conversation without having to speak loudly. I recommended Acquerello to others at our hotel, and will continue to do so."

  • "For our wedding anniversary, I had tried to get a table at Gary Danko's - but no such luck! I had heard good things about Acquerello again and again over the years, and so I decided to give it a try. The exterior is unassuming, to say the least, and the location isn't glamorous, either. But open the front door, and you are in a different world: elegant, polished, sophisticated, but not a bit snobby. Just friendly and very upscale. The food was fantastic with an emphasis on freshness and on authenticity, bringing out the best in everything - and (thank God!) not as contrived as in so many "hot new places/chefs..." where new dishes are created for the sole purpose of doing something new, not necessarily convincing. So - this was a revelation!"

  • "This was our second time to Acquerello but we brought a first-timer with us, who was appropriately awed by the service, physical space, wine list, and food preparation as we were the first time. This was a fantastic dining experience though it felt a little short of our prior visit because the restaurant was full, thus not as 'sanctuary quiet' as we had remembered. Still, it is calm and unrushed and the service remains truly spectacular. Our fish entrees did not meet the otherwise amazing first/second/dessert courses; not sure why. Wine pairings were fantastic with unusual Italian wines which are their unrivaled specialty. This is very expensive but we will absolutely return."
