The food was fantastic. There was little flexibility around dietary restrictions particularly dairy. At one point, a guest asked for "what someone else had" as part of a special course. She was told no as the chef would not make another dish. The wine is way, way overpriced. And the corkage fee of $75 is unheard of in this city of phenomenal restaurants and wine lists. The wait staff was very nice. The receptionists and sommelier were"doing their jobs" without joy or really providing friendly service. Overall, for a very expensive restaurant with terrific food, the value is just not there. My biggest advice would be to "lighten up" and do not be quite so full of themselves.

Over all, I do like Acquerello. I got a few 'free' items, I like the environment and the services. However, the main course was 'so so'. The Halibut was dry and not temperature hot, so is NY steak. The lobster tail was fine but it cost $15 extra.

This is a tough review, the food as always, was outstanding But the service lacked any warmth, charm or joy. While the staff went through the motions, we felt that they wish they were someplace else. Diners should feel welcome, we did not. We have dined there before with a different experience. Perhaps because this time we were two women. If so, how disappointing.

This was an outstanding dining experience from the moment we were seated. The parade of amuses bouches, the ahi appetizer, gnocchi, duck, halibut, and cheese cart marked a great meal (I can't comment on dessert because we had to quit after the cheese course). The service made the experience outstanding as did the sommelier's recommendation of a wonderful Italian wine that complemented our meal beautifully without any attempt to oversell. The room is quiet -- this not a "happening" restaurant but one that offers an elegant experience focused on food and service. Highly recommend.

This restaurant is worth every penny. The tasting menu with wine pairings is delightful and Raphael did a wonderful job with the wine pairings. The only thing missing was the birthday candle! Despite that we will be back next year again for the third year in a row for our birthday celebrations.

The evening began with several wonderful small bite "gifts" from the chef. These continued through the dessert course. We chose the prix fixe menu with four courses. The only disappointments we're our main courses. My lobster had a rather mushy texture, not at all what I expected. My husband's steak was chewy and lacked flavor. The box of biscotti to take home was a nice surprise and wonderful AM snack!

I took my daughter and her boyfriend to this small gem of a restaurant in the Russian Hill area. The interior is beautiful with a high ceiling with ornate wooden beams. We had the tasting menu with the wine pairing which was excellent. The meal was well paced and very satisfying. It is expensive but well worth it for a special occasion.

Celebrated my daughter's (who is a foodie in her own right) 21st birthday with 3 generations of familia. We all had Chefs Seasonal Tasting Menu with wine pairing. Every dish was exquisite and our Italian waiter was the best host who took his job seriously with a warm smile. He orchestrated the timing of every dish, wine, and service of others. Sommelier was knowledgeable and professional of all pairings. Daughters 21st birthday will be memorable!

This was probably the nicest restaurant that I have ever dined or will dine at. We went with my 84 year old mother. She loves white table cloths and superb service. She was so happy. I really can not say enough.....the service was fabulous and the ambience was superb. The amuse bouches were so beautiful, tasty and fun. I would go again in a heart beat if my wallet could afford it. Definitely a special occasion type of restaurant.

I dont typically write reviews. I chose to write this one due to my good experience versus some of the other prior comments ie pompous service, odd smell and bad food. The place was great. It is a bit pricey....but reasonable given the service, food and QUIET ambience. It is certainly no more expensive and equally as good as similar type restaurants such as danko's and atelier crenn.

Very quiet restaurant, disappointing as no licence for proper drinks, and therefore couldn't order a gin and tonic to start, nor a cognac to finish, formal dining room, lacking atmosphere, ok menu, but very small portions, service very good and attentive, overall not a patch on Gary Danko, and more expensive, in overall terms very disappointing, both in ambiance, and the very small portions, albeit what was served was nice, but at these prices, nice is simply not good enough

We enjoyed our anniversary dinner at Acquerello. Enjoyed the small bites they serve before dinner. The somm helped pick out a terrific wine well suited to our tastes. You can choose from course menu (3, 4 or 5) or the season menu with wine pairing. The food was delicious, but small portioned. Presentation was impeccable. Sit on side near air conditioners or suffer a little. Definitely recommend for a nice romantic dinner or special event, but be prepared to dish out for it!

  • Smell and upset stomach.

    Dined on 9/24/2014
Would we go back? Sadly, no. I am sure that this will surprise many. First; our expectations were lowered, when we saw the entrance from across the street. But, that is really beside the point. (It IS good with the parking garage across from the restaurant.) Second; there is an odd smell in the restaurant. We couldn't put our finger on it. My husband suggested "old and musty." Third; we both had upset stomachs after this dinner. Maybe the odd smell and our upset stomachs are related? In conclusion, our upset stomachs are the main reasons we will not return to this restaurant.

My son and I were in San Fran for a 5 day "foodie feast" and booked Acquerello, along with Chez Panisse, Gary Danko, Boulevard, Zuni, Slanted Door and Kokkari. All restaurants, with the exception of Acquerello, were fantastic. Unfortunately, Acquerello's decor was overdone, the servers were pompous, the food was disappointing, and the service was either flamboyant theater or non-existent when needed. Acquerello is the complete opposite of the total perfection achieved of Gary Danko, Boulevard and Zuni.

The food at Acquerello was outstanding, the service was friendly and attentive. The atmosphere was pleasant and warm. The outside of the restaurant did not give the impression of a 5 star. However, the interior was a pleasant surprise. The food selection was fantastic, my wife and I enjoyed our meals. The wine selection is extensive and very good. Though this restaurant is rather expensive, it is well worth the price for such a fantastic meal.

Acquerello is truly a great dining experience with great attention to detail and all the nice little extras. This is our third visit and we expect to visit again. Rated 5-star across the board before, we lowered to 4 star on food and overall this time because the food fell a little short of our previous expectations. The menu seems to have been narrowed somewhat and the deserts offered lacked imagination - they were good but not of the quality we had come to expect. Perhaps it was because it was a Tuesday night?

So often a special celebration dinner is planned, only to disappoint after the great anticipation. Not this time! The warm lighting, and beautifully decorated room, the painted wooden ceiling from a past life, and although an upscale dining room, it felt comfortable. Thoughtful touches like a place to put ones wrap or purse. The wait staff worked beautifully together, with great timing. The dinner began with memorable little bites, and ended with "the sixth course" of chocolates and other sweets. The food was beautifully presented (I was especially taken by the melon soup presentation). It was for us a pretty near perfect evening.

Loved the chef's little surprises! The appetizers and the pastas were fantastic. The small portions of each dish was a bonus, as it allowed us to try out the eclectic collection of food on the menu. I recommend the peach salad, the beef tartare, the duck, and the foie gras pasta. The lobster though, was slightly disappointing as it lacked taste. Desserts were ok, not too sweet which was a plus, but nothing special either. Overall, a good experience and a good find!

The kind of place you leave feeling ripped off. I know it is suppose to be fancy and "chique" with the small food portion but $300 per person to leave hungry is ridiculous. The food is good, not great, but good and staff is super nice, but nothing justifies the ridiculous price tag.

Everything was fabulous and exceeded expectations. Four complimentary appetizers all delicious. Five of us 3 different entree's all spectacular. Only criticism is the $75 corkage whether you purchase an additional bottle there or not, open your own bottle-which is NOT on their excellent wine list, $75. Most I have ever paid for corkage here or abroad. Would I go back? A very enthusiastic YES! Although I do hope they review their corkage policy. They do know how to take care of their customers from the time you enter until the time you leave, one of the best staffs around.
