A word from Acme Food & Beverage Co.
The ovens are turned on early. Six o'clock most days. Earlier on Sunday. Within an hour, bread is rising, apples are being sliced. Pecan pies are pulled hot from the oven and left to cool. Ice cream churns in the machine. Cups of coffee steam on the prep table, the baker's cup marked with chocolaty fingerprints. By midmorning, pork shoulder, rubbed with spices the day before, is slowly smoked. And white buckets are filled with sliced onions. Corn is shucked. The stock that cooked all night is taken off the stove and strained. Bags of fresh shrimp are delivered in old grocery store bags. The waiters arrive in groups, shirts and ties on hangers. By then, every burner in the kitchen is being used. Herbs are chopped. Scallops cleaned. Ovens at 500 degrees. All sauces are checked. Bartenders polish their shakers. Silverware is rolled and every surface is wiped down. Music. Lights. Doors are opened. Dinnertime. At Acme. Seven nights a week. Local never tasted so damn good.Continued

  • "A friend brought me to Acme the first time I visited Chapel Hill, so I wanted to return now that I've moved here. I LOVED the food and drinks during the first meal, but on this second visit I was really disappointed. My calamari salad was tasty, but pretty greasy. And then my main dish of crab cakes was really salty and not very flavorful. My partner ordered the salmon and the fish and grits were great, so I'm glad I had a chance to enjoy that. Our server was great, but he never asked me how the food was and didn't notice that my plate had most of the food left on it. It was such a stark contrast from my first visit there. I hope this was a blip."

  • "Tasty comfort food, well prepared and fairly priced. Heirloom tomato appetizers were out of this world. Our waiter was friendly and professional but had too many tables and was not very attentive. It didn't spoil the evening, but we didn't like the tight spacing of the tables and the long wait for our main courses. After our appetizers were cleared, it took about 40 minutes for the entrees to show up. It was a busy night, but still. We'll definitely go back, but maybe on a weeknight."

  • "Celebrated my 25th anniversary with my employer here. The wait staff was fantastic. Knew all about the specials, wine pairings, etc., and made recommendations to the table that we all enjoyed. Shared appetizers and passed the entrees around, everything we had was first rate. And they specialize in local produce direct from local farmers to your table. Living near Acme is one of the great things about living in Carrboro."

  • "Good local restaurant with farm to table mentality. Food is good. Service slow. Cocktails fair. Tomato dishes, Hamburger, steak and tuna good choices. Spaghetti and meatballs, roasted pork, charcuterrie disappointing. Desserts good especially peach cobbler and brownie. Wines a bit pricey."

  • "I have enjoyed Acme's food for years, but I am sorry to say that it is not what it once was. The crab cakes I ate last week were not near as good as the dish I enjoyed a few years ago. The crab was not that fresh, the rice/tomato/okra accompaniment was bland, and there was something in the dish was far too sweet. I couldn't say what that was, but the sweetness didn't go with the crab cakes and overpowered the dish. The tomato plate appetizer was pretty good, but the olive oil in the pesto topping was tasteless and thin. It didn't really taste like olive oil. I also tasted some of the scallop fritters, but found them to be essentially a moister hushpuppy with corn kernels. I couldn't detect any scallop flavor. Disappointing."

  • "Amazing service and food. What a gem! We were there for part of the tomsyo festival and had anamazing heirloom tomato appetizer, as well as the fried oyster salad. Entrees were perfect; I think the forever pig might be the best BBQ I've ever tasted. The salmon was also amazing. Perfect meal."

It has become my "go to" place for a nice dinner. The only issue is that if you are sitting inside, it can become loud and hard to have a conversation"

  • "Amazing food and a lot of it! Start out with tray of 3 amazing donuts, walk the block then come back and have amazing smoked salmon eggs Benedict. I'm not big on eggs Benedict but this was on a homemade pastry and very fresh eggs. Very unique, different and awesome food. Wait time for food, check, and refill ( which never happened) where extremely long my only negative comment. Would definitely go back!"

  • "I love this place. I have been for dinner and brunch, as well as a tasting on a food tour. Every time has ben SO GOOD! For brunch, my friend and I split the doughnuts and the coffee cake, and I ha the Acme breakfast. My two eggs was more like 4 or 5 eggs, with perfectly crispy bacon (I asked for it that way), yummy (somewhat spicy) potatoes, and the most incredibly biscuit I have ever eaten. I highly recommend this restaurant!!"

  • "Acme has been one of my favorite restaurants for a long time. The food is always excellent, the service friendly and attentive, and,their Manhattans are superior. My friends and I frequently go there for Sunday Brunch , where the menu provides a nice variation beyond the standard fare. One of us has serious food allergies, so she calls ahead and the chef always provides a delicious alternative to meet her needs. I love this place! I sometimes go there for dinner by myself and always have a wonderful experience."

  • "I've never had something here I didn't think was delicious. I'm a vegetarian, which only leaves me with one entry to pick from (however many appetizers are veggie friendly), which I normally find very annoying, but the one choice always very yummy and more interesting than a mushroom on a plate. The one thing this last time was, my mom has an onion allergy which made it very very hard for her to find something to eat here as almost everything has onion in the base of the dish, and the waiter seemed a bit annoyed that we had to ask him several times to check with the chef about what had onion in it, but eventually we found a few things and the kitchen was willing to be flexible which was great."

  • "Our friend wanted to celebrate her birthday there and we've had good dining experiences there in the past but we usually go to Acme on Tuesday night for their $12.95 entree specials. Tonight's meal was a big disappointment. The special cornbread with country ham, the chicken with tomato gravy and the fried oyster salad were all too salty. (We're southern girls so we know country ham is salty but this was too much even for us). The fried oysters were VERY small and had so much breading you could hardly taste the oysters. Had our waiter Bill ever returned to our table I would have sent them back but since he didn't return until everyone had finished their meal I didn't have the opportunity. The bartender did make a great drink for me."

  • "I am a frequent ACME brunch patron, but this past Sunday was extra special. I had a few of my expat friends visiting from Shanghai who I hadn't seen in a few years for a reunion weekend. We requested a table outside via OpenTable (which we were given), and thoroughly enjoyed a 2 hr brunch, complete with ACME's mimosa of the day ---- a lovely concoction that we all ended up enjoying a few of! The service was great and the food delicious. The deluxe benedict with the fried green tomatoes and ham is fabulous, and my friends considered both the Mexican breakfast (with the cactus and bean empenada) and the Texan breakfast (with the steak and green chile grits) as bit hits, as well as the donut sampler starter that we feel is a 'must have'!"

  • "It wasn't the restaurant's fault but we were seated next to a family who were very entitled in that they allowed their two children to behave like animals. We all have kids so I'm not being one of those anti-kids at restaurants. The top to our evening was getting a full spray of cornbread (which I'd heard was delicious) thrown at me and my fellow diner. It was very moist and eggy on my face and in my friend's hair. The parents didn't seem very concerned about this situation and seemed a little put out that my friend wasn't very happy to have to pull cornbread out of her hair.--"

  • "We are from DC, doing the college serach. My daughter and I looked online and found great reviews for ACME. We were a little dismayed by the look of the front and the surroundings, but parked in the back- as soon as we walked in, we felt comfortable and "cared for" is the only way I can say it. It was early so (around 6:15) and so very few people there. The waiter, a guy who had moved here from Florida, was wonderful and attentive..... but then came the food- omg, we were blown away. I had the salmon with cheesy grits and beans and my daughter had the perfectly cooked medium rare steak frites. We were in heaven. I wish ACME had a restaurant in DC-- PLEASE think about it! absolutely fantastic!! dnWe lw.eh collge"

  • "Four of us dined at Acme to celebrate a birthday. This is our favorite restaurant in Carrboro and we were, again, not disappointed. The service was attentive, food exceptional, seating perfect. We even asked the bartender to create a special summertime bourbon drink for us, which he did, and later checked at our table to be sure we were happy with his concoction. I highly recommend this place."

  • "My spouse has enjoyed Acme in the past but I have always found the food to be mediocre. I decided to treat her and reserved a table. We like to bring our own wine and while a $20 corkage fee is on the high end for our area I was OK with it. When I got the bill I saw that the corkage fee was $30. I was flabbergasted. Not even the most upscale restaurants in our area charge that much. I asked the server to check it and she came back and verified the amount. I will never go back and I certainly will never recommend a restaurant that will disrespect a customer in that fashion."

  • "I chose Acme, for its eclectic dinner menu to entertain guests from DC. The food was delicious and, overall, we enjoyed our experience. I liked Acme, but I would've loved it if there were pork-free vegetable sides. When I told the waiter I was disappointed that I would not be able to enjoy the side dishes, he was rather surly and defensive in his response. The greens and salsa that came with my entre were prepared in a way that made it special- not just another salad - so I was very satisfied. My guests were happy with their food, too - especially the shrimp chile relleno with the wonderful mole sauce (and without sour cream, as I am lactose intolerant). Thanks for being creative & holding high standards for a great culinary experience!"
