The service was very slow, which is some what expecting on the Riverwalk. My wife, Son, and my Mother stopped for lunch. The service and delivery of drinks and food were slow. Following completing our meals and waiting for the waiter to return to bring desert for my son and the check, my son was done sitting at a table (lunch took over an hour) he and I went to walk around. The waiter finally returned and my wife asked that the desert for my son be put in a to go container. He stated the chef would not do that, the desert had to be eaten by the child at the restaurant. She challenged him and he finally brought the desert packed in a cup (Basically shoved).

The food at Acenar is authentic but interesting and very flavorful. My husband had the shrimp Diablo, and I had the chili relleno - both were fantastic! We also were lucky enough to have some local Mariachis play for us (after asking us if that was OK), which added to the ambience, and our kids were also treated well. We'll be back!

The food was delicious and our server was wonderful. He was exuberant, excited about the food, and very efficient. We ordered several of his recommendations and enjoyed everything. Although the chips served with the quest are superior to what they serve complimentary with the salsa.

Been wanting to try Acenar for quite sometime as I see their lovely patio whenever I am in the area. Went for Culinaria week and enjoyed the meal they presented. The shrimp tacos were some of the best I have ever had and my BF really enjoyed the sopes as well. Jalapeno margarita was delicious. I was disappointed in my entrée combo. The enchiladas were good, rice and beans were bland and the fajitas were just so so. I also did not care for the fact that 20% gratuity was automatically added to our check, I guess this is common practice, but it caught me off guard. Glad I noticed or I might have tipped again. All in all, nice atmosphere, great service, but $114 for Mexican food is a bit much considering all the great choices in San Antonio.

We went to San Antonio for the weekend and at the last minute a friend who used to live there recommended this restaurant. We were very glad she did. The service was a tiny bit slow but to the waiters credit he was working several very large tables around us. It was not slow because he was lazy that's for sure, he just had a lot of people to take care of. The food was fantastic and the drinks were great. We would go there again for sure. We had our 12 year old son with us who is a quiet kid. I checked kid friendly because even after 9pm on a Friday night there were tons of small children in there, not all of them quiet. It was kind of a loud atmosphere anyway so it was all bearable.

We went here with our 3 kids for a late dinner. They had a decent kids menu and we got a free chef appetizer with coupon from their website. I had chicken mole enchiladas and my husband had duck enchiladas. We also got a side of cilantro rice. Everything was very yummy! Drinks were good too, but pricey. Atmosphere was cool and outside seating is right by the river walk. The waiter was friendly and helpful. We would go here again when visiting San Antonio.

We went there with friends and their little daughter, the service was really friendly but not overly attentive. The food was really great - we are from Germany and wanted to give mexican food a try ... and we were not disappointed. The Acenar is located at the famous Riverwalk. Outdoor dining looked really nice, but for us it was simply too hot to sit outside (close to 100°F).

Stopped in because of a recommendation from a front desk clerk (said it's the only Mexican restaurant she'll eat at on the Riverwalk). Being the first patrons of the day, we didn't have a wait, had our choice of table and the service was quite attentive. Chips were quite tasty as was the salsa. I had the Acenar combo and don't think I'll eat anything else on the menu as it was perfection! Hubby had the chile relleno, which he enjoyed, but he really had his eye on my plate! We'll definitely be back the next time we visit the Riverwalk!

Our out of town guests were so happy that we chose Acenar as our dinner destination. The friendly, helpful, attentive&efficient service from Chris combined with the delicious food made for an enjoyable evening on the Riverwalk. The oysters in my favorite appetizer were quite small but the unique presentation&flavor combination elicited WOWS from our guests. The ladies' palates were equally pleased&impressed with their entress choices of fish tacos&the cochinita en pibil.I branched out from my usual menu choices& tried the recently added jicama shrimp tacos(a bit sweet for me)&the seafood enchiladas(good but would prefer a spicier flavor).Their dessert orders(churritos&tres leches cake)brought smiles,"MMMM's"&VERY happy(& full!)endings!

The heated plate was hot... the food wasn't. I mentioned it to our waitress... and just got a "sorry about that"... 3 tries before we got our water glasses refilled. We came for the outdoor dining... but the air conditioning indoors is not up to par. On the good side our mojitos were tasty. But didn't make up for the cold food and mediocre service.

I enjoyed my experience at Acenar. Our waiter David was great and offered some really great recommendations for food. He was also very patient with us being that everyone in my party was from out of town and it was our first time at the restaurant. The food came out in a timely manner and was delicious. The only problem I had was that I had to wait 20 min for a table and I had a scheduled a reservation prior.

Thursday night before the July 4th Holiday. We arrived a bit early and were welcomed and immediately seated. Service was excellent as always; however, the food was lacking. Not certain if it is a different kitchen staff or what..... The food was somewhat bland and my fajita meat meat was dry and tasteless. I hope this was an anomaly and that the food will get back to previous levels of excellence.

After all the positive reviews I had read, I was surprised at the exceedingly poor service and quality of this restaurant. The bar had a strong order of chemical cleaners, as the bartender stood in front of us wringing wet towels out as the dripped on the bar floor. My margarita was terrible, with a strange taste I could not identify. My husband is a very regular drinker of Makers Mark, which he ordered. He knew immediately that the taste was wrong. He identified the mixed flavors as probably Makers and Jim Beam. The waiter was apathetic and sarcastic; the food mediocre. Overall, a sad experience for out first night visiting San Antonio. Do not eat here!

Have heard many good things about this restaurant but it was my first visit. Being Zagat rated, I was really ready for a great dining experience. My overall opinion was so-so, really nothing special. I found the food under seasoned and selection rather limited. The service was great, but the noise level was overly load and intrusive - I think this was made worse by our location, which was in a corner that amplified the noise. Anyway, the food was ok, but I would not go out of my way to recommend.

... stay out of the back room if you want to have a conversation during dinner. A couple of large groups downing a couple of raspitas in there and it can get pretty loud... they seriously should look into the acoustics. All in all the food was great (as usual), the location is very convenient if you're headed to the Empire or Majestic, the service is typically very good, as it was on this occasion. Not our first rodeo, we'll go back.

We recently had an early dinner at Acenar before a Majestic Theatre performance and had an outstanding experience. I had chosen Acenar based on colleague recommendations and was a little surprised at the negative comments about the service, making me a tad nervous about what we'd encounter. Our waiter - Chris Moore - was really outstanding. He was extremely friendly, attentive but didn't at all hover, had perfect timing for drink refills, and was mindful of our theatre commitment but didn't rush us out, either. The menu offers great twists on and a large variety of Mexican food, including options for vegetarians and the hand shaken margaritas are outstanding. Overall this was superb and we'll definitely return before another downtown event.

I've been to Ácenar several times and have always enjoyed our meal and experience dining in this River Walk gem....except this past week. We were seated in the downstairs "back" room...overcrowded with diners and little to no air-conditioning. While the back room was filled to capacity, the main dining gallery was left open, airy, and above all else...cool... An aside note: a nearby quintuplet of women wanted to exit out through the glass doors that lead from the back room to have some photo-taking moments before heading off to see a show....only to be told that the glass doors were locked. That made me quietly nervous as to the lack of exits (one open and one curtained off) into this "back" room.

We went to Acenar expecting what a personal recommendation and a review led us to believe: a restaurant on the Riverwalk with reasonably priced exceptional Mexican food with attentive service. I reserved a table and could not wait. Reality: it is ABOVE not on the Riverwalk, a two mile walk on the walk itself, and not in the scenic/romantic part. We expected a reserved table to go with our reservation, we were offered a table behind a column without a view, instead we had to sit indoors next to the exit door with waiters bustling around us. So much for romantic dinner. Food was excellent and menu as promised. Service was not as attentive as I would have expected and slow for beverages, especially from the bar. Mixed experience overall.
