  • "I enjoyed my experience at Acenar. Our waiter David was great and offered some really great recommendations for food. He was also very patient with us being that everyone in my party was from out of town and it was our first time at the restaurant. The food came out in a timely manner and was delicious. The only problem I had was that I had to wait 20 min for a table and I had a scheduled a reservation prior."

  • "Thursday night before the July 4th Holiday. We arrived a bit early and were welcomed and immediately seated. Service was excellent as always; however, the food was lacking. Not certain if it is a different kitchen staff or what..... The food was somewhat bland and my fajita meat meat was dry and tasteless. I hope this was an anomaly and that the food will get back to previous levels of excellence."

  • "Fantastic place, the guacamole was so fresh!! Our server was fantastic. We had our two daughters with us and she was so accomidating. She brought out there food first and was sure not to put anything to close our youngest. She had a spoon on hand before I could request it. Made my birthday dinner so memerable."

  • "After all the positive reviews I had read, I was surprised at the exceedingly poor service and quality of this restaurant. The bar had a strong order of chemical cleaners, as the bartender stood in front of us wringing wet towels out as the dripped on the bar floor. My margarita was terrible, with a strange taste I could not identify. My husband is a very regular drinker of Makers Mark, which he ordered. He knew immediately that the taste was wrong. He identified the mixed flavors as probably Makers and Jim Beam. The waiter was apathetic and sarcastic; the food mediocre. Overall, a sad experience for out first night visiting San Antonio. Do not eat here!"

  • "I had the ship tacos and the tuna margarita. The server was charming, the food was delicious and the ambiance was very authentic with a modern twist. Loved it!"

  • "Everything was very special. Loved the exotic tacos...I had chicken fried oysters and they were delicious. Would have been even better with a slice of avocado on each one! Very noisy place....had trouble hearing my dinner companions across the table. Location is great...just right for before the Majestic productions."

  • "Have heard many good things about this restaurant but it was my first visit. Being Zagat rated, I was really ready for a great dining experience. My overall opinion was so-so, really nothing special. I found the food under seasoned and selection rather limited. The service was great, but the noise level was overly load and intrusive - I think this was made worse by our location, which was in a corner that amplified the noise. Anyway, the food was ok, but I would not go out of my way to recommend."

  • "This place is a good location for pre-theater dining. Good drinks, good food, good service and close to the Majestic Theater."
    Dined on 6/27/2014
  • "We recently had an early dinner at Acenar before a Majestic Theatre performance and had an outstanding experience. I had chosen Acenar based on colleague recommendations and was a little surprised at the negative comments about the service, making me a tad nervous about what we'd encounter. Our waiter - Chris Moore - was really outstanding. He was extremely friendly, attentive but didn't at all hover, had perfect timing for drink refills, and was mindful of our theatre commitment but didn't rush us out, either. The menu offers great twists on and a large variety of Mexican food, including options for vegetarians and the hand shaken margaritas are outstanding. Overall this was superb and we'll definitely return before another downtown event."

  • "... stay out of the back room if you want to have a conversation during dinner. A couple of large groups downing a couple of raspitas in there and it can get pretty loud... they seriously should look into the acoustics. All in all the food was great (as usual), the location is very convenient if you're headed to the Empire or Majestic, the service is typically very good, as it was on this occasion. Not our first rodeo, we'll go back."

  • "The service was fabulous. The guacamole was as good as it gets. The chips are marginal, more like Doritos. I had the roasted pork. The seasonings were very different, but excellent. My buddy had the fried oyster tacos. Smiles from his side of the table."

  • "I've been to Ácenar several times and have always enjoyed our meal and experience dining in this River Walk gem....except this past week. We were seated in the downstairs "back" room...overcrowded with diners and little to no air-conditioning. While the back room was filled to capacity, the main dining gallery was left open, airy, and above all else...cool... An aside note: a nearby quintuplet of women wanted to exit out through the glass doors that lead from the back room to have some photo-taking moments before heading off to see a show....only to be told that the glass doors were locked. That made me quietly nervous as to the lack of exits (one open and one curtained off) into this "back" room."

  • "The atmosphere was alive and vibrant. The menu offered a nice variety of Mexican food and tex-mex style options. Our waiter was very good and kept our drinks full and the food coming, even had delicious homemade and table side made guacamole that had excellent flavor and a kick of lime."

  • "Acenar has some of the finest Upscale Mexican dishes in San Antonio. I would rate the filet dish an 8 based on the cut of meat chosen for the filet. It seemed to be a choice cut, rather than prime beef. The flavor was fabulous!! The table-side guacamole is to die for! A word to the wise.....Don't go on a night that coincides with a Majestic Theater production. Although we had reservations for 6:45- we were told it would be a 45minute wait for an outside table.. yuck. Table for 2- 45minute wait- no bueno. All in all, a fine dining experience with a great location- if you choose the right night."

  • "We went to Acenar expecting what a personal recommendation and a review led us to believe: a restaurant on the Riverwalk with reasonably priced exceptional Mexican food with attentive service. I reserved a table and could not wait. Reality: it is ABOVE not on the Riverwalk, a two mile walk on the walk itself, and not in the scenic/romantic part. We expected a reserved table to go with our reservation, we were offered a table behind a column without a view, instead we had to sit indoors next to the exit door with waiters bustling around us. So much for romantic dinner. Food was excellent and menu as promised. Service was not as attentive as I would have expected and slow for beverages, especially from the bar. Mixed experience overall."

  • "Our first dining experience at Acenar was a good one, though the service was a tad lacking. Our food was excellent, as were our margaritas. The service was slow(but it was crowded) and our server forgot several items - our chips and salsa, our tortillas, and one dinner was incorrectly served to our table. The correct plate appeared quickly, however. This being said, I would not hesitate to return because the food was wonderful. Our dinner mates are quite the experts on Tres Leches cake and Acenar's was some of the best they had ever had."

  • "Great find! The margaritas are amazing! Right on river walk. And the food was delicious. Went on a Saturday night with a group of 10, and everyone loved it. Also had a Bachelorette party next to us for a lively atmosphere."
    Dined on 6/14/2014
  • "The overall experience has been positive. Food is good but not particularly original. The ambience is very modern and not particularly warm. Average service."

  • "Nice little restaurant on the San Antonio Riverwalk. Service was excellent, every dish we ordered was well prepared and had a great presentation. Our server made a few recommendatiins which ended up being perfect. Definitely recommend the Crab Tacos, Carnitas, and Beef Tacos. It was so good that we went back two more times this week after the first time. It's all good!!"

  • "Our waiter was horrible in every way imaginable. We shared our experience with the manager and he comped our two dinners which was generous. He was to address the issue with the waiter so no one else has the experience we did. We've eaten here twice before and service was better. I would not recommend eating outside as the birds are constantly trying to get your food, this time one succeeded!"

  • "The food at Acenar is not classic Tex Mex, nor high Mex. Rather it is more Mexican influenced. Familiar dishes done very well, often with unique ingredients (like duck). This time we shared the Lettuce Cups as an appetizer. That may be the best thing I have ever had from their kitchen. Highly recommended! (but on the spicy side if you are a mild person). Main courses were the duck chalupas and chicken with a chipotle sauce. Both were very good. "

  • " I filled out our request with a "note" that it was a birthday celebration & requested river view seating, realizing it wasn't a guarantee. We arrived 5 minutes before our reservation, excited to celebrate our daughters 15th birthday here, per her request. We were greeted cooly, & rushed, no warmth from the hostesses. After telling her we had a reservation for 7, she hurried us to a crowded table for 6, in a corner, never once checked for our name or reservation. When saying again we had 7 & asking if she had outdoor seating she gruffly turned to go to the front as we followed. "No" she said "45 minute wait." When asked about another table she nodded her head to one in front of her, which we moved the 2 tables together & sat down."

  • "This was a very good tex mex food experience. The complimentay nacho chips were excellent and their homemade salsa was delicious! This was a good choice in restaurants along the Riverwalk."

  • "Refreshingly authentic in the heart of the tourist laden River Walk. Cool bar and awesome drinks."

  • "Took my wife and here family here for her birthday! Food was good but the service was lacking. The server was not interested in being attentive or making sure that we were enjoying ourselves. Maybe, since we were a big group and the gratuity was automatically added, he did not feel that he needed to earn it. It was very noticeable the attention he gave to the tables around us and I would have appreciated more effort. Being a restaurant server is not easy at all but you need to be consistent. "

  • "Arrived a few minutes early for my reservation and they gave the last outside table with a view to the couple in front of me with no reservation. Only had inside dining at that point. Left and they sent me a text when a table opened up outside 20 minutes later. Frustrating. Be prepared to take your chances even with a reservation. The view I got was behind a wall with a glimpse of the riverwalk, meanwhile the couple who walked in off the street had a front row seat. This restaurant is on a less busy portion of the riverwalk. Tried the combo platter and all the meats/shrimp were tasty and well cooked. Your best bet might be to just walk by to see if there is a table available without a reservation."

  • "Im from SA and typically don't choose Mexican rest. when we go downtown bc they aren't very good... I now can recommend a Mexican restaurant - we had fabulous service as well.. Valet with Israel next door at the hotel... Overall - everything was perfect! Thanks to all! "

  • "Great food and ambiance. This is a place to go with a group. We were inside and the noise level was high. No romantic dinner dining."

  • "Acenar's is right down the street from the Majestic Theater and lends itself to a leisurely early dinner before a show, which is exactly why we found ourselves there on a Monday early evening. It's accessible from both the street and the River Walk on Houston Street. Outside and inside seating. We entered through the bar from Houston Street. First impressions are of a clean, modern restaurant with some San Antonio styling to remind diners where they are. We were seated quickly because we were so early and the dinner crowd had yet to appear. Waiters were friendly and attentive. It is a little more expensive than neighborhood restaurants of the same quality. The corn tortillas made up for it. I recommend it for leisurely Tex-Mex dining. "

  • "I appreciate the perfect location on the start of the River walk and near Majestic, but service and quality of food relative to pricing of food/drinks does not make this a top destination for me. Portions were quite small and sides were uninspired- particularly when you pay 25 for 5 shrimp "Diablo" - I don't know what was devilish about the dish, other than the idea that it was sinful to charge so much for so little. With all the tourists and bridal parties coming through, I guess Acenar can let their standards slip since they just need to do enough to continue to draw River Walk guests, but as a local I'm bummed that location is likely going off our list."

  • "We dine at Acenar about once a month usually before the Symphony. Food is always very good and this was no exception. Great green enchiladas and Carne Asada. Good, cold Mexican beer makes it a complete meal! "
    Dined on 5/9/2014
  • "The food was very good, as noted, and the staff was friendly. I was a little irritated because the app indicates that I can ask for outdoor dining, but that was not honored when we showed up... and now, doublechecking before I submit this, it was one of the reviewers that said that. So I guess you can request it, but don't count on it. We sat in the lower level, next to the doorway to the riverwalk. It didn't quite fit the level of the food (or the sophistication of the food)-- formica tables and hard plastic chairs. I'm not saying that it was unpleasant, just that it felt incongruous. But the food-- very nice! I'd go there again when in town."

  • "Avoid the back room indoors. It was too noisy to hear Anything. Kitchen messed up orders in two successive nights. Understaffed. Stay away "

  • "A Mexican restaurant that really is nuanced and thoughtful about the food served is attractive to my wife and me. Zocalo in Kansas City is our current standard bearer and El Agave in San Diego occupies a somewhat distant second place. The hope was that Acenar, in San Antonio, would best both. Our waitress was absolutely terrific and the service would be hard to top anywhere. The ambience fell a bit flat with 70s style had chairs and tables. The meal was good, but not adventurous. Sad to say, and surprisingly, we are still looking for a better high end Mexican restaurant."
