Diner Reviews
  • "Acacia still has it moments, but compared to one or two years ago, the ratio of misses to hits on the menu has increased. Even the quality of the bread has gone down. Cost-cutting all around, I suppose. The waitstaff is young and enthusiastic but a little unpolished (I really don't want to hear the dreaded "you still workin' on that?" at a restaurant that aspires to be a cut above.) At least the wine list is still dependably interesting. I'm a semi-regular customer, and desperately want to keep loving Acacia. Remembering the glory days of the recent past, I'll give them one more chance before breaking off our affair for good."

  • "Very good food. My only complaint is that the inside was overly air conditioned. This led us to sit outside, but then there were some mosquitos. The service could also have been a little bit better, but it wasn't bad."

  • "Interesting food some unusual dishes and nice variety---reasonable prices---and pleasant ambiance especially outside since it is a side street scene. I will go often----a great place to eat alone also."

  • "The food was decent but nothing creative or spectacular. My tuna nicoise was too done but my husband's steak was perfect. The calamari should have been crispier. The cake (best thing in the menu according to the server) was too dry for our taste. The service was the worst part...it seemed that servers were disorganized. A lady stopped by to check on things but it didn't occur to her to fill the water glasses or take away the dirty dishes. The empty appetizer dish stayed on the table until the end of the meal! It took forever to get served even though the place was half empty. Not a place I will go back."

  • "Acacia Bistro serves delectable food in a quiet, unhurried manner. They have an interesting wine list with changing specials at 15% off, and most importantly their dishes are prepared beautifully. Their first course option, risotto with wild mushrooms, was incredible as we're the two fish entrees that we ordered. Finally, for the level of cuisine, their prices are very reasonable."

  • "There aren't many restaurants in the Van Ness area, so one might assume that Acacia Bistro remains because it's "the only one". However, Acacia Bistro remains in the area because of the fantastic food and service. Since the inception of this restaurant, the menu has grown more diverse with a wide variety of options. Notable items include: starters - Turkish meatball, gnocchi; dinner - paella, scallops. They serve a basket of delicious bread + olive oil while you look over the menu, which is always a nice touch. The only thing I would note is that if you want your starter brought out before your entree, make sure you mention this to the server."

  • "Acacia has a really terrific selection of fresh appetizer salads, but the entrees we sampled including the baked salmon and a pasta dish were only ok."

  • "We love the wine list and the service here. It was our third visit. Our group of eight munched across the menu as usual-- but the two main courses containing olives had so many olives that no one finished even half of their order. The brussells sprouts remain one of the highlights of the small menu. ABout half of us love the citrusy goat cheese and happily ordered it again, and the other half found it too citrusy. We wish there were one simple salad-- the raddichio salad would be fine without the raddichio which has been bitter every time-- and it would net the simple salad some in our group prefer. Lamb chop was over the top delicious and we would all have that again. The half chicken has been a consistent winner."

  • "I have eaten at Acacia Bistro a number of times. Each time has been delicious. I shared Mortadella from Bologna, a very thinly slice mini salami with fennel and a miniature peppadew (I think). I loved this appetizer. My fettuccine with shrimp was super rich and super delicious. My friend's calamari was very good according to her."

  • "The restaurant did not have bread on this night. The waitress Ann was nice but very insistent on adding items to the check I mean how many times did we have to say that we did not want drinks(3). I had the scallops and the portion was so small for the price of $21. My husband ordered the paella and only got 2 shrimp and some chicken and two penny sized slivers of chorizo. The only thing that was tasty was the chicken liver appetizer. I wish I had ordered two of those to eat for my entrée. We were not impressed. It was not worth spending $60 for dinner. So disappointed. "

  • "Got a call a few days before, asking for my credit card information. They said with parties larger than 6 they charge $30/person if the reservation turns out to be a no-show. Our plans were solid, so this didn't bother me but seemed a bit unusual? Arrived early and the table was all set and ready for us. We got all the food we ordered but there were some mix ups (one of us got an entree intended for another table). The kitchen was a little slow; we waited a long time between courses. The food was good but not outstanding. Nothing was done for the birthday girl. Our request for split checks threw the staff into a panic. We ultimately got what we asked for but it was messy. The staff/manager were earnest, but fell short."

  • "My husband and I are always glad when we decide to stay in our own neighborhood and eat at Acacia. The menu is seasonal, and the selections are always top notch. I had the sea scallops with a fresh pesto sauce. It was well presented and flavorful. My husband had the lamb chops and really enjoyed them. We asked for salads to be served after our entrees, and they were more than happy to accommodate us. I had the Kale Salad. It's prepared somewhat like tabbouleh and was quite delicious and refreshing. My husband had the beet salad which was also very good. For desert we shared the Montellimousse Cake - it was great! We will probably go back again before the menu changes because we really enjoyed it."

  • "We were looking for a place near the embassies on International Drive for Passport DC, and this fit the bill. With outside seating on a beautiful afternoon. The food was good, but the prices were on the high side for just good. If I lived in the neighborhood, perhaps a place I would return to once a month."

  • "The restaurant has a range of menu options including entrees, salads and sandwiches, all good quality. I particularly enjoyed the lamb sausage Panini."

  • "If Acacia Bistro were downtown, our bill would have been double, and we still would think it was a fine dining experience at a good price. But because Acacia is up Connecticut Avenue, it is downtown elegance, service, and cuisine at reasonable prices. It is our go-to restaurant with friends because the food is always outstanding. Slightly Mediterranean with an inventive chef and a carefully chosen wine list (with many offerings by the glass). Highly recommended. And there is always parking nearby -- and it's just a block from the Metro."

  • "I started with one of their small plate specials of Roasted Eggplant which was cold and bland. But they made up for it with two really good tapas. One was a seared Ahi tuna that was great. The other was Cigara Borek which are cheese filled cigarillos served with a fruity (Mango) sauce. These were amazing and I'll go back for them if nothing else. The service was a little uneven, but the food made up for any minor blunder on the server's part."

  • "This neighborhood wine bar should probably stick to being a wine bar. The restaurant is forgettable as well as a disappointment. Some positives: nicely-priced wine list, excellent suggested wine and pleasant service (from the one and only server). Drawbacks: lentil soup was super-bland (a subsequent spicing simply dumped something like green-chili sauce into it); hamburger was so-so; their special dessert was suddenly unavailable. The place is not very attractive (hard floors, full windows) as a restaurant. If it weren't for the kind service both from the server and the wine steward who offered us a compensatory dessert wine, this would have been a long commute for less-than mediocre fare. Thankfully we got the 1000 points."

  • "I have been to Acacia many times-- always been a very nice neighborhood place-- good food, well prepared. the kale sald was a fine chopped mess, lentil soup had no flavor. Pasta dish good but way too much oil. I had a guest and was disappointed. Not a real cheap place. Casual dinner for two, with no alcohol and sharing a main was 50 without tip. this would have been ok but not good food."

  • "The food is fresh and creatively prepared. The chef is talented and always willing to accommodate the customer's special needs. The waitstaff are excellent and add to the enjoyment of the meal, with friendly and professional service, with a touch of humor."

  • "Acacia is a wonderful restaurant to have in the Van Ness neighborhood. It is great on its own -- great food, wine, etc. But it is especially appreciated here. The owner and servers could not be nicer or more helpful, and the chef continues to make creative, delicious dishes."

  • "I believe the owner of this restaurant wanted my husband and I to have a wonderful time dining on Valentine's Day. However this special occasion was a bit challenging for this restaurant. They were late in seating us and the service was slow. The waiter did not appear to truly be a waiter. He was missing the charm and knowledge of a good service provider. Our meals were fine, but nothing special. The tables were too close together and we could hear every word of our neighboring table. We recommend less patrons and a more manageable menu. Keep working on it."

  • "We came with great anticipation. We left declaring this as our worst dining experience ever--and we're fond of eating out. The food was fair, and start to finish the service was unacceptable. At the host stand we were ignored for at least 7 minutes and had to find someone to seat us. Finally seated, we were presented an over-priced V-day pre-fixe meal menu. Though the restaurant called to confirm our visit, we were never informed that pre-fixe was the ONLY option. Still, despite the limited menu with the world's smallest crab cake, the items served were out of order and with very long waits between selections. The sounds of our stomachs grumbling were outweighed by the voices of the kitchen and service staff screaming at one another."

  • "Our reservation was at 6. They told us to arrive early because they were completely full and would be busy. That being said, we arrived at 5:45 and the staff was not ready and we were the first ones in the restaurant. We walked in and the staff was arguing over which table was 12. The server was nervous and had did not know much about the menu. Not 100% sure of the menu e asked him for recommendations, he had none. A different woman brought us our first course and asked if we wanted to add the wine pairings. Also, the food was OK at best. My chicken tasted like something I have made at home many times and the cake was crumbly and seemed old or like it had been sitting out all day. I was extremely disappointed and will not be back."

  • "Departed disappointed, with sadness for the owner. Completely unprepared & overbooked, the overwhelmed waiters were abrupt, confused, and constantly chased by an exasperated owner. Delays in seating, drinks, and mediocre tasting / poorly presented food. In turn, we were bemused by cook and service staff screaming in the kitchen, bartender quitting, flamboyant arrival of the owner’s wife, (understandably mad at her hubby, and ((not-cool)) unpleasantness to customers for being called in as cavalry. So, while the copious complimentary booze, profuse apologies, and (periodic) moving explanations by the owner of his miseries took the edge off, the blown romantic evening (and $250.00 bill), remain, alas, a still plenty gloomy memory."

  • "We frequently dne at Acacia Bistro. There are many elegant and unusual options for vegetarians as well as for carnivores. The soups are always a favorite. Don't miss the chocolate lava cake. The service is always excellent and the staff always offer warm greetings."

  • "Acacia may seem stark from the outside, but the food and the service are brilliant. They clearly understand how to create a great dining experience from using high quality ingredients to offering a thoughtful wine list to providing even people with food issues (e.g., gluten) a wonderful array of dishes to choose from. The service is low in pretention and high in food knowledge and caring about the people around the table. Go with their wine suggestions and go hungry!"

  • "This was our first visit to Acacia and we found it attractive. They did seem understaffed that day. It took a while for us to be greeted even though there were few occupied tables. After we were seated, it took perhaps 10 minutes before our waiter appeared. We ordered and then waited an hour for our sandwiches. They were delicious. Then it took another 10 minutes to flag down our waiter for the check. In all, a quick sandwich lunch kept us in a nearly empty restaurant for two hours. The staff was polite but largely unavailable. What could have been a nice lunch experience was made annoying because the restaurant wasn't staffed appropriately."

  • "Acacia Bistro has terrific food, with a menu of both small and main course dishes. There's a mild Middle Eastern bent to the restaurant but it's better categorized as eclectic. Dishes like kale salad, seared tuna, scallops, pastas, are uniformly good and nicely presented. It's a relatively small restaurant so the noise level is quite manageable. A real find."

  • "After visiting Acacia at lunch and happy hour, I was excited about taking a group of friends there for dinner. Unfortunately, the experience did not live up to my hopes. The service and wine selection were highlights, but our meals were uneven in quality. Two people ordered a pasta that was mediocre -- both complained that the dish was lacking in flavor, even though the menu description suggested that it would be a very flavorful dish. However, two of us enjoyed our meals a great deal, so it was awkward to be enthusiastic about our meals while our companions had 'buyer's' remorse' about theirs. Consequently, I would not recommend the restaurant to others for dinner unless/until I had another -- hopefully better -- experience there."

  • "Have enjoyed Acacia in the past but were disappointed with our last visit. The waitress was indifferent and when we asked for her opinion of an entree she responded dully " I have never seen anyone order that and don't even know if we have it!" We had to ask for water and bread after she said it would be right over, never took our appetizer plates off the table when dinner was served so we did! The food was just warm so was returned to warm up with no apologies. She left for the evening walking by us without saying anything. However the evening was redeemed by another waitress DeDe who couldn't have been more friendly and helpful. They did start closing everything down by 9 which we thought was early for a Friday. Would have stayed longer!"

  • "Prices are high for the quantity of food. The lamb sausage pannini, for example, had good quality bread and the sausage was good but there was very little of it. Some dishes were too greasy and the talpia sandwich was bland."
