A word from Abigail's Grille & Wine Bar
The original Pettibone’s Tavern, on Hartford Road in Simsbury, was built in 1780 for Jonathan Pettibone Jr., whose father, Jonathan Pettibone, had been killed in the fighting around New York in 1776. The Tavern served as a stagecoach stop on the Boston to Albany Turnpike and was also a meeting place where Capt. Elisha Phelps met with Ethan Allen and his Green Mountain Boys to plan the capture of Fort Ticonderoga. The original tavern was burned to the ground by Indians in 1800, but was soon rebuilt and reopened in 1803. In more recent times, the tavern has been a restaurant. It was purchased by the Chart House chain in the 1970s, but under new ownership became known as Pettibone’s Tavern again. In January, the building was damaged after a fire activated the sprinkler system. Today, Abigail's has been completely restored and the restaurant has reopened under new ownership. Come and enjoy our extensive menu of creative continental cuisine and a welcoming New England atmosphere. Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "First time here and will definitely be back. Nice atmosphere. Very Good service. Varied menu. Fresh and tasty food. Will Need to come back and get more dishes. Would be a great place to take a group or an intimate night out."

  • "We were seated in the sun room, separated from a party of 14 by 2 empty tables. If there had been a noise level category of "deafing," I would have chosen it. I cannot understand why the young host chose to seat us so close to this large group. I don't think he even gave ambiance a thought. There was an empty table on his computer screen, and he chose it. For my entree, I ordered a Caesar salad with crab cakes--dressing on the side. When the salad arrived, the dressing was on the salad. The crab cakes were very good, but too rich for the heavily dressed salad. Someone failed to get my order correct--the waitress or the kitchen. Again, not paying attention to detail."

  • "We were greeted warmly upon entering and taken to our seats. Our drink order taken quickly, we were served a wonderful amuse bouche of pan-seared scallop, then ordered our appetizers which were the P.E.I. Mussels Poulette and the Garlic and Gorgonzola Bread. There were more than enough of both for the two of us to share and the bread was necessary to sop up the luscious creamy wine sauce! Next we had our entrees which were specials; lazy lobster on a bed of asparagus risotto and smoky ribs (and a lovely bottle of wine from the extensive wine list). Not that anything more was needed, but we were served an array of dessert offerings that included three different variations on a cream puff, cheesecake, and ice cream..and after dinner drinks!"

  • "I joined two friends for Sunday brunch, but we opted for the lunch menu instead. Options are limited on the brunch menu, which is pricey considering the limitations. Our server was great, as was the reservation desk when I called to say we would be late. I would recommend this restaurant."

  • "Abigail's is one of our favorite places to dine. It's worth the hour - fifteen minute drive. Never disappointed. Staff and food is exceptional."

  • "From apps to dessert, there is nothing not to like at Abigail's, including the energy that exudes out of the diners, as well as the waitstaff. Ambiance, decor, choices, presentation, and quality: All excellent. Monday-Tuesday night specials are out-of-this-world outstanding, as well. A restaurant worth the ride--near or far."

  • "Sat outside and enjoyed a great meal and appetizers. Staff did not forget anything we ordered and they were polite but they did not check up on as often as they should have. Perhaps since there were only 2 servers to wait on all the tables that were full they were not able to. At one point we would have ordered more wine but since they did not come, we finished our meal and decided to go open a bottle at home. Besides that the food was great and I will be back."

  • "We had brunch outside on the patio. The brunch was delicious and a great deal at $18 per person which included a cocktail and dessert. The traffic noise on the patio wa a bit loud but they have privacy from the road with all the bushes and trees so it looks lovely. The upstairs bar could be a great place for a private event."

  • "We eat at Abigail's often and this was the worst we have run into. Two people's filets were ordered medium rare and came medium well. By the time we could summon someone to address the problem, the other 2 people had nearly finished their meals. Manager did what he could to solve problem but it was an uncomfortable dinner for everyone. 2 appetizers were plopped down on our table and the person that brought them walked away. we did not even have silverware or napkins or plates. We yelled at him quite loudly (every other diner within 100 feet looked at us but he just kept walking. I assume he was hearing impaired. Our hot appetizers were cold by the time we got our servers attention. They have done better in the past."

  • "From appetizers to dessert - everything was outstanding - the only complaint would be the noise level - rather loud and a bit difficult hearing the waitress. Besides that, I will definitely be back - especially for the calamari and Gorgonzola red pepper bread!!!"

  • "Been here several times and never been disappointed. The food is very good and menu varied. They are accomodating in evey way and the service prompt and courteous. Had scallop dinner that was so well prepared and accompanied by an excellent risotto. The prices are also very good for food choices and wine."

  • "Our food was very tasty, both the appetizers and the main meals. The setting is very comfortable, airy and spacious. Service was friendly and on time. A very pleasant lunch !"

  • "I can't say enough good things about Abigail's. I had noted in my online reservation that my husband and I were going to be celebrating our one year anniversary, and they took such care of us! The host/manager had us seated in a window-side half booth... So romantic. And our waitress personalized our shared dessert (chocolate mousse pie-delicious). The food was outstanding to say the least (hubby had sirloin, I had filet), and afterward we headed to the upstairs bar (nice atmosphere!) to have a nightcap. We could not have been happier with the overall experience. Thanks Abigail's!"

  • "I've been to Abigail's on many occasions, and it never disappoints. The food, service, and ambience are excellent. I have chosen different items from the menu and each has been delicious and generously portioned. This past visit, we got a very large corner booth, and since we were celebrating a special event, it was nice to have the privacy and quiet. Our waitress was cheerful and accommodating. I would highly recommend this restaurant. PS. On our way out, 3 men at a table we were passing stopped me to tell me they admired the dress I was wearing. That is simply lagniappe (a New Orleans term meaning "the icing on the cake.")."

  • "Have been to Abigail's often and have never been disappointed or even slightly disappointed. Over time we've tried several items on the menu and would have a difficult time choosing a best. It has become a special occasion place and a place to entertain out of town guests. The food, service and atmosphere are what brings us back."

  • "This our second time here and the first was much better then this time. Apps were great, my lobster w/pasta was bland, so was my husbands pasta. We will try it again. We will make sure we sit outside in the summer. The noise it too much sometimes."

  • "We had a very competent waiter and even tough my daughters sandwhich came out wrong it was corrected without a problem. The house wine was excellent & the spinach artichoke dip & jumbo shrimp cocktail were the best I have eaten!"

  • "We had to be moved three times... 1st in a dark section Then placed at a table that was next to a fire extinguisher with my husband's elbow literally on the extinguisher. Asked to move once again. Finally we were placed at a decent table by a window. When we sat down and the waitress removed the extra place settings we saw there was crusty food residue stuck to the tablecloth underneath one of the plates, the underside of which had a glob of food stuck to it. This was disgusting. We also had crusty food residue on my bread plate, which was replaced at our request. In all fairness the meal was delicious, but otherwise the entire experience was not good because of the tablecloth and moving situation."

  • "Dined here with a friend on Wednesday. My friend had the scallops with Risotto. I had Veal Saltimbocca with roasted veggies. Both entrees were superb! We shared the Creme Brulee - which was delicious! Restaurant was very busy for a week day night. Make a reservation on Open Table so you get the time you prefer. Service was great."

  • "The restaurant wasn't all that busy, but our (2) meals couldn't have come out more differently cooked; specifically, my swordfish entree was lukewarm but my girlfriend's was steamy hot. So, my meal was a big disappointment, but sending it back to "heat it up" would have returned overcooked swordfish (it was already too done for me); and who wants to risk sending any food back from the stories you hear? I'm reluctant to try Abigail's again."

  • "Seated promptly but with no wine list or pre-fixe menu. Server took our wine order, I ordered sauvignon blanc & my mom ordered pinot grigio, server gave me the pinot grigio & my mom the sauvignon blanc. I knew immediately when I tasted mine it was pinot grigio. We ordered a second pinot grigio to share & server was going to use my same glass, I had to request a new one, common sense says, different wine, new glass. My mom's filet was clearly an au poivre filet & when I told the server, she stated that "it seemed to have alot of pepper & she would make a new one with no seasoning". I said just give her one that's not au poivre. Manager came over after new steak came out to check, but server NEVER returned to check. Felt abandoned."

  • "When we came in to Abigail's, it was quite cold. The hostess found a table that was slightly warmer, and then said she would ask the manager to turn up the temperature. In a few minutes, I was very comfortable. The three course dinner menu was very nice. We told our server that we had to be out in an hour. He said that would not be a problem. The food was delicious. My husband and I enjoyed all of our choices. The service was more than fine. Our server, Stephen S, was attentive, very pleasant and added to our enjoyment at Abigail's."

  • "Had a great brunch date with a friend. Food was delicious, and the brunch menu was varied. Will go back for sure to try some of the other options. Wait staff was wonderful. They were very accommodating and understanding when we asked to have our table changed as we were between two large parties of 10-12 persons."

  • "We were there to celebrate a birthday. The first problem was a dirty water glass. The second was a hair in the martini and another drink had debris floating in it. The server apologized but did not seem overly concerned and made a joke that it must be Abigail's ghost. Then on to the food. Only one person in our party enjoyed their meal which was the pork chop. The lobster dish was served cold and for $34 had less lobster meat than a lobster roll. The Tuna on the menu is described as being served Asian style however a request was made to have it simply grilled. The server said that it would not be a problem. When it arrived it was Asian style. The server said she misunderstood the request. The filet mignon was overcooked and dry."

  • "Res for 1 PM arrived 10 min early and we were seated at once. Waitress was at table w/in 30 seconds. Drink orders taken and quickly served, same for food. We both had the seafood crepe casserole which was hot, creamy and full of advertised items. As good as we have had anywhere and we have eaten a lot of seafood along the NE coast. We sat inside because of threat of rain, however the patio looked inviting, all tables covered by umbrellas. We shall be back."

  • "Abigail's is my 'go to' restaurant for events such as birthdays, anniversaries, etc. Recently I made reservations a week and a half in advance for 5 people. Upon arrival, not only was my table not ready, but the hostesses looked annoyed and as of a group of 5 at this time was impossible. After a 15 minute wait, we were put at an obvious table for 4 with a chair at the end to accommodate the whole party. A very tight squeeze, and somewhat embarrassing especially since I made reservation for friends from out of town. Food was amazing as always, but it was a let down for making reservations in advance. "

  • "Abigail's holds a special place in our heart because that is where we had our first date (7 years ago ... married 12.31.13!). They always treat us special - go out of their way to give us a special table or take a special picture. Their food is exceptional and the wine choice fabulous - LOVE their Malbec! Go out and treat yourself tonight!!"
