Diner Reviews
  • "A great addition to the ethnic/Ethiopian food scene. Really wonderful Ethiopian cuisine with a great wine list representing Ethiopia. Friendly and helpful staff. We'll be back!"

  • "We had a 5:45 reservation and all three of us were there and seated at 5:45 pm. Service was prompt and efficient without hovering and the food delicious."

  • "We really liked the food. Went there for valentines. The two of us shared some vegetarian rolls for appetizer, ordered doro tibs and doro wot. The combination with injira bread was really tasty. The service unfortunately left a lot to be desired for. Even though the staff were extremely courteous, we had to wait a long time before someone came by, and it wasn't like they were so busy. My drink was taken out for a refill and never came back. Had to ask for it almost at the end. I would still recommend this place as the food was good and there's a good chance that the service is hit or miss as it just seemed a bit disorganized. On a side note, the lighting was so dim that I had trouble reading the menu."

  • "We live in a neighborhood with 10 Ethiopian restaurants within 10 minutes of our house, so we feel we have some level of expertise although we admit we are Caucasian. The Injira was very light and did not expand in our stomach after a few minutes and the beef tartar with jalepenos was fantastic. We ordered the vegetarian plate and had the beef and a lamb dish as well, which was perfect for 4 people. This restaurant needs community support to survive. Please help them out."

  • "I love Ethiopian/Eritrean food, and found Abbay online. The food was good, I would say I have had better experience in other restaurants. Especially, they were out of a couple of main entrees which are my usual favorites and I was disappointed. The ambiance was quiet, as well the location. The waitress was very friendly. I will give it another shot, may be Thursday is not exactly a great night to check out a new restaurant."

  • "Went here because a buddy wanted Ethiopian food on New Year's Eve and I remembered a great review this place got in The Stranger. Unlike many Ethiopian restaurants, this place has positive ambiance, clean, well-lit, attractive. Plus it's on North Capital Hill, with easy access to the University District, Eastlake and the Eastside. Servings were reasonably sized and the food was excellent. Definitely will go back and take others, especially people who are grossed out by some of the Ethiopian restaurants located further southeast."

  • "Pros: Good for big groups, Can reserve online. Cons: Service could be quicker considering our group was the only one there. Food was Decent. I have had better Ethiopian food. Doro Tibs and lamb was super awesome. Doro Wats was just OK. Injera was fresh and the beer was fresh too! Our group of 20 enjoyed dining there. The ambience was good too."

  • "We really enjoyed discovering this hidden gem in a quiet neighborhood. The food was exceptional and the service was very good. When there was a delay in our order the waitress brought us something to eat while we waited. The vegetable combo dish was wonderful - great flavors."

  • "It was so nice to have a good Ethiopian dinner and not have to drive all the way to the central district. Restaurant also had a nice ambience."

  • "The folks here are kind and helpful and the food left me feeling good, unlike some Ethiopian rest. where I feel heavy afterwards. That said, we ordered the vegie combo and it was good, but rather blandly spiced. The ground chickpeas were delicious though!"
