A word from Abacus - San Francisco
Tucked into a cozy nook of upper Hayes St., this romantic Asian-inspired gem captures old world tradition, California modernity and European sophistication in its cuisine, presentation and decor. Gorgeous freshly-cut flower arrangements, subtle comic hero inspired oil paintings, and an aromatic parade of perfectly appointed plates immediately introduce you to Abacus's uniquely elegant yet unassuming style. Choose from savory favorites such as mushroom & pine-nut stuffed wontons, the familiar yet extraordinary Mongolian Beef, or the delicately seared Sea Bass resting on a bed of pea shoots and ginger broth. Each carefully prepared dish lavishes flavorful gifts upon the palate, from joyful first bite until wistful last. As final testament to the quality, elegance and playful character which has won the hearts of locals, Abacus pairs its exquisite menu with an eclectic wine list suitable for every humor, taste and wallet.

Abacus is an unpretentious neighborhood joint that delivers beautifully in arms of a well-prepared meal. It's small and unremarkable in decor (the art on the walls was a somewhat geeky collection of Batman toys) but we came for dinner and that did not disappoint. Excellent, flavorful dishes, with lovely presentation and clean, expert preparation. I was able to eat my short ribswith chopsticks (!) the meat simply fell away from the bone. And the tuna with a subtle, complex ginger wasabe glaze was exquisite. We'll be back, you should try it too!

The food is very fresh, the flavours subtle and the beef and chicken some of the most tender and moist I have eaten in an Asian restaurant ever. The veggies were perfectly tender crisp and the use of fruit in sauces and as flavourings in a number of dishes managed to avoid cloying sweetness. We would go back again.

  • Asian gem near the Haight
    JakeVIP
    Dined on 12/29/2011
Abacus is well qualified as a "neighborhood gem" - it is located in a small collection of businesses near the Haight. It has the expected minimalist decor (heightened by some Xmas kitsch) well-prepared food and very moderate prices given its relative elegance and quality. They make a point that they are NOT a Chinese restaurant (tea and rice are charged per person, e.g.) and many of their dishes would border on 'fusion'. The service was efficient but perhaps could have had a bit more finesse but all-in-all, a pleasant meal and satisfying at a very competitive price point.

We eat here once a year when we attend a Chanticleet concert at St. Ignatius church, an easy walk from the restaurant. We have never been disappointed. Truly excellent Chinese cuisine. We ordered coconut ice cream for dessert and it's really the best we've ever had.

Dined at Abacus by myself on a cold, rainy night. We started a little slowly and there was a wait for food but worthwhile. I had read reviews saying that portions were small. I must have hit the jackpot. My egg roll appetizer and fish with vegetables and a spicy sauce and an order of rice would have been sufficient for two. The food was well prepared and I plan to return with at least my spouse and possibly others.

I thought the food was wonderful. It was different from what you usually find at Chinese restaurants but in a good way. I loved the vege eggrolls and they had this ginger aioli that was to die for. The aioli took the fried portebella mushrooms to the next level. The service was really good too. The waiter was attentive, knowledgable, and very pleasant. I would go again and recommend others going too.

It's been a half year since I've been to Abacus. They continue to provide high quality, tasty food from a surprisingly diverse, sophisticated menu. I've thought of Abacus as being Asian-California cuisine, using the freshest, tastiest ingredients and being light on the oil. I went to Abacus with an Asian friend this weekend, and he characterized the food as being very traditional Chinese - but fresh and very tasty, probably the best in the city - with an interesting pan-Asian influence, as showcased by the diverse appetizer menu and unique Chef's Recommendations. I love Abacus and will continue to bring friends and guests as much as possible!

Delicious! I had heard about Abacus from different people, and finally tried it for myself. Soo glad that I did. We had the vegetable egg rolls, hot and sour soup, katsu pork with cilantro sauce, and Mongolian beef. All were incredible! I really appreciated how they put their own twist on the traditional dishes. Instead of sweet and sour sauce, they used a tangy pineapple sauce with the eggrolls that really worked. And the cilantro sauce cut the richness of the fried pork perfectly. None of it felt greasy -- all of it was fresh -- and we went home with satisfied bellies. Thank you, Abacus! We'll be back soon!

I read several restaurant reviews on Yelp and I ordered items based on these suggestions. While they were all well-cooked, we weren't crazy about two of the four dishes we ordered. The salt and pepper tofu was more of an entree than appetizer and had a tad too much salt. The hot and sour soup was more sour than hot and also small. I would order the pork belly again, but I'm not sure about the Mongolian beef. It wasn't spicy. The rice portions were dainty. The service was decent. I may or may not come back since I don't live in the neighborhood and the food hasn't entirely convinced me it's worth the trip.
