Diner Reviews
  • "First time at Abacus. We were celebrating my girlfriend's birthday and the service staff made her feel special. We had drinks at the bar first. The bartender, Jason, was very personable and friendly. He found out it was our first time there, so he brought out some complementary lobster shooters. They were delightful. After drinks we went to the main dining room for dinner. It was a Monday, there were only a few tables seated, so service was impeccable. The waitress (sorry to say I don't remember her name) was knowledgeable about the menu and we were never left wanting. Foie gras was our starter, nice but bite-size for $30. Salads were excellent and creative, filet and lamb for the main course and peach cobbler brulee for dessert!"

  • "My good friends were visiting for the weekend and we wanted a great foodie experience and it was wonderful. Great service, food and atmosphere for a special evening."

  • "Amazing food. Each course kept outdoing the one before it. Sushi was excellent- best I've had in Dallas in awhile. Spring rolls were imaginative. Beef tenderloin was perfectly cooked, seared for a great taste. Dessert was perfect size, great blend of flavors for just enough sweet to not overwhelm. Exec Sous Chef Chris Patrick has done a great job."

  • "The food was very good, but dinner was, we thought a bit pricey for what you were served. There was a large party in the dining area that was very loud and boisterous. The wait staff was attentive and enthusiastic about the menu, which was varied and interesting. We did not have the price fix menu, but ordered off the menu. Perhaps the price fix would have been a better choice."

  • "Another fabulous meal at Abacus! Wish I lived in TX. I would eat there every night...well almost!"

  • "Have been here at least 10 times over the years and the experience always exceeds expectations (which by now are pretty high!). It's not an inexpensive meal, but worth every penny. Simply cannot recommend Abacus highly enough."

  • "Abacus was a Very good dinner. Based on recommendations expected a bit better perhaps, but was good nonetheless."

  • "My server was excellent and the food especially good. I have been dining there since they opened and it is still one of the finest restaurants in Dallas. The bread basket is yummy and the food very imaginative and tasty. My server's assistance with the wine made it even better."

  • "Abacus is as good as ever. My wife and I went to celebrate our 25th anniversary and the staff at Abacus made it perfect. From the hostess greeting to the waiter to the rest of the staff you would have thought we were celebrities. The pace was right on, the food was beautifully presented and tasted as good as it looked!"

  • "Took my girlfriend there for a special evening and we were not let down. Started by seeing a group of friends at a nearby table and the wait staff were attentive, friendly, humorous, and knowledgeable. All aspects were wonderful."

  • "I guess I just expected more from a place of this caliber. The food was good but the lack of "specialness" from the service upset what was a very special occasion for me."

  • "The only thing better than the presentation was the taste. Great food and great service."

  • "We always enjoy Abacus - menu is excellent, and the kitchen never fails to impress. We've had a private function catered by Rathburn's company, and really enjoy the food. Last night's visit was no exception in that department - it was the service and ambience that failed to fully impress. Our server was knowledgeable, if less than fully engaging. Our table was also disappointing. I understand the popularity of Abacus' food causes them to fill every table, even in the overflow room(s) - though I was disappointed that frequent diners (documented via OpenTable) weren't treated any differently than first-time walk-ins. Despite securing a reservation well in advance, we were given the very back table in the far corner of the overflow room."

  • "Though not a place my wife and I would typically frequent, we will do so again. The food was amazing. Presentation, taste, combinations and preparation. I strongly suggest one of the tasting menus."

  • "Presentation was outstanding as well as the service. Some dishes with rather simple ingredients yet masterfully pieced together. There were five of us and not one plate went back to the kitchen with food on it. Best scallops I'd ever tried, as well as lamb and duck - very memorable. Everyone at the table enjoyed our evening at Abacus - highly recommended."

  • "This was our first visit to Abacus - and wow! We'd definitely recommend the 5- or 8-course chef's tasting menus with their recommended wine pairings - delicious surprises around every corner. A gorgeous restaurant to boot."

  • "Amazing food. Wine prices should be lowered as they are upwards of twice retail price. Will keep coming back because Kent is just that good. Oh, and I know good food."

  • "We were there for their opening and make it a point to go for dinner anytime we are in town. It has NEVER failed us. ALWAYS excellent food, drink AND service..The complete dinner package."

  • "Abacus has been a Dallas dining institution for many years and continues to provide among the best food in Dallas. Great menu selection; sushi was wonderful; our entrees were cooked perfectly and service was excellent. Wine list has a variety of choices; we had an excellent meal. A great place for a memorable occasion! "

  • "Everything about this restaurant was awesome!!! Our waiter Ryan was great too, he took care of us!!"

  • "I was underwhelmed by the 8 course tasting menu. The 5 course tasting menu was much better the last time I went. I felt it was not a good value for the price. Also, each dish in the tasting menu was so similar, the only thing that seemed to change was the type of protein used. The hit-or-miss nature of Abacus is why I don't go there very often. You might be better off just getting specific dishes off the regular menu. The venison was great...you might try that if you go."

  • "This place was excellent! I was kind of nervous at what my spouse would think because I never been there either but it turned out to be a true fine dining experience. The attire was business casual and we were not sure what to order as we are used to most contemporary dining but if you fall in that category I highly recommend the 5 course chef's tasting menu. It's about $65 per person but definitely worth the money and time until you become familiar with certain dishes. With just the 5 course you can expect to be there a minimum of two hours of fine dining which is perfect for a couple needing a nice getaway or special occasion. "

  • "Abacus is amazing. The food is creative and it's got a fun and engaging vibe. Great for couples or small groups. The bar is also awesome. "

  • "We only could get early reservations and the place was just filling up when we left. Thus I have no idea about accoustics / noise level. Abacus has an open floor plan, including the kitchen. There are booths and tables. I had a magnificent buffalo filet steak and roasted asparagus. It was a truly a wonderful tasty meal. My husband loved his caesar salad but found the calamari tough and not tasty. They took it off the bill. Waitstaff was very friendly. We both would go back to eat there, if we ever get back to Dallas again."

  • "This is a great fancy restaurant for special occasions, dates, business meetings and so on. Some of the portions are small (sashimi). Others are more than enough (beef medallions). The service is good. The food is good. I like the open kitchen. It's a nice place. Bring your wallet and enjoy the evening. I use this place as a good test for first dates. If she orders the $60 filet, it's also our last date. If they get something else, we'll probably see each other again. So far I'm one for two."

  • "The food was over sold (seared tuna and fried soft shell crab is NOT "sushi" even in Dallas) and trying too hard, e.g., wonderfully done quail was drowning in too sweet and too spicy barbecue sauce (I know, barbecue is a very individual thing, but really?). Service was incredibly inattentive for the price. Sitting with dirty dishes and having to search to get the second glass of wine that was already ordered is not what I'd expect from a place well touted and with very good food."

  • "This is fine dining. The food is immaculately presented. The flavors are complex and wonderful through each bite. The service is beyond reproach. A perfect balance of friendly and sophisticated. Absolutely a true five star experience. "

  • "This is one of my new favorite restaurants in Dallas. It's a close call between Abacus and Nick and Sam's for my favorite restaurant. The food is delicious wait staff knowledgeable and helpful. Everyone got something different from fish to Buffalo and everyone in the party was happy with their selection! Must Go! "

  • "The bar was lacking in high end bourbons, although the bar service was great. The dinner had a super start (small plates) and the ending was great (dessert) but he meal itself fell flat as it was plain and boring. "

  • "This restaurant is a place I've recently discovered and will continue to return again and again. The food is out of this world and so in the service. The menu has been different every time, which tells me the chef knows what he's doing. Can't wait to try the chef's table and 8-course tasting menu!"

  • "Kent Rathbun remains creative and cranks out new tasty dishes, as well as the old standbys like lobster shooters, which are always a big hit. We took my family for their first visit and they loved it. I had scallops that were cooked to perfection. The others had venison, lamb, and tar tar and everything was delicious. The waiter was a lot of fun, and we tested the sommelier who recommended the Chateau Boswell and let me say "wowza". Good stuff, as well as the La Crema "Nine Barrel" Pinot Noir which was also outstanding. As in they only make nine barrels and its hard to come by. If you want to celebrate or impress your clients, this is where you go in Dallas."

  • "we have been going to Abacus since it opened and have never been disappointed until now. The meal was not to the standard we expect from Abacus. The lobster shooters were oily and the Sake poured over them tasted very different than in the past. The corn soup was flavorless. The risotto had too much truffle oil and the vegetables in the Venison dish were not fresh. the waiter would whisper to another waiter and laugh everytime he left our table. Very disappointing. the bar was disorganized and service very slow despite the fact that it was only 1/2 full. Heading to Jaspers this week. hope it hasn't declined in the same way."

  • "Wine list has a great selection Wine glasses with egg smell. Food. tuna sushi with some fishy smell but other selection of sushi was fresh Rizoto overcooked (oatmeal like) Main dishes were cold but quality of the food seemed very good Dessert was great Cheese selection great "

  • "Went for our anniversary dinner and Abacus did not disappoint. Great food with nice wine list. I had venison and my husband had steak, both were outstanding. We will go back. Ken was professional and friendly waiter. All around a first class experience. "

  • "This restaurant was a perfect choice for a non-rushed evening to visit with my son who came to visit from California. The waiter did not pressure us to order, and just allowed us to drink our cocktails, visit, and order dinner when ready. It was awesome! Nice, relaxing atmosphere -- eclectic interior with cool lighting."

  • "The building is somewhat unremarkable from the outside, but once you get inside, it is top notch classy. Valets are friendly & funny. I felt like my precious Jeep Grand Cherokee was safe. There were Lamborghinis, Bentleys & Ferraris in the lot (ie - if somebody's ride was going for a joyride, it wouldn't have been mine). I digress, I'm being sarcastic - the valet guys were funny, friendly & professional. I tipped accordingly. The service & ambiance was impeccable. They treated us as royalty, even though we were dressed as a first date on a Sunday. I wore Diesel jeans, Lucchese boots, a button down Polo and a big ole smile. She had black high heel boots, a cute skirt & a sexy blouse. I would go on, but I'm out of characters. Try it!"
