A word from A16 - San Francisco
A16 is a restaurant and wine bar bringing the delicious and hospitable traditions of lively Campania to San Francisco. The chic, rustic/modernist venue is named after the motorway that transverses
the South of Italy. The restaurant features wood oven-fired Neapolitan Pizza and other specialties of Campania such as Maccaronara with ragu napoletana and house-made ricotta salata. The wine bar serves 40 wines by the glass and half bottle carafe. The list is 60 percent Italian, mostly from the South, and the other 40 percent is New World, celebrating premiere Italian varietals grown in California along with many California wines.

This was our first time in San Francisco...A-16 was recommended by a friend that had been before. It did not disappoint! The food was fantastic, there is a great variety to choose from on their menu...the Burrata and the Tuna appetizers were out of this world! Service was excellent...next time we are in San Francisco, we will be returning to A-16!!!

It's been a while since i've dined at A16. The last foray was a bit "meh", but this time the food was back up to snuff. Terrific burrata--creamy and salty and soft, and a beet skald with frisee and nuts that was surprisingly delicious. THe pizza margherita was wonderful--although the crust was a bit chewy to my POV--I prefer the thinner crust that you can get at Chez Panisse, or in Rome. The wine list is terrific. Their sommelier does a nice job choosing little known wines that always delight.

Strongly suggest two things. Read the menu online to see if the offerings suit you. Second, insist on a table in the main dining area. We were very disappointed after the great reviews, to be seated in the dark rear alcove and to find all our dishes not to our taste. Very inattentive service by a very nice waiter.

The food was great, and we had an awesome table but the service was patchy. My guest had a glass of white wine and I had a carafe of rose. Both of our glasses were half full but a new server came by toward the end of the meal and poured the rest of my carafe of rose into her glass of white. When I said something, she said "Oh, your server told me to do that. Do you want more? We're closed but I can get you more if you want." ... eh, thanks but no thanks. Everything was great but when you end on a bad note, that's what you remember.

Overall the food was good and the wine list fantastic, but some of the attention to detail is missing from this place. 1. Shambling check in procedure 2. Poor transfer procedure resulting in us being poured the wrong wine 3. The walls are bare of any fabric so it is very noisy! Some people will like this but we had to shout over our fellow diners to be heard - when everyone does the same this compounds the problem These easy fixes would make this restaurant great as the food is good and the staff friendly enough. In their defence the place was rammed so maybe we caught them at a bad time....

this was fine, but no comparison whatsoever to SPQR. on the plus side, we could get a same-night reservation. there were some hints of excellent food, like the goat chop I ordered, however, disappointingly, the tiny goat chop was far outnumbered by the very bland goat sausage taking up most of the plate.

Pizza great, pasta Ok, great brown sugar dessert. Very expensive wine. Table next door screeching like banshees all night and though we were given free dessert (which we ate and it was good but didn't want, should have been given free wine or dinner) there was no apparent effort taken to ask them to reel it in. Took a long time between being seated and getting someone to take our order.

Dining here is always a pleasure! The waiter selected a flight of reds from Italy and we couldn't pick a favorite. Took the server 10 minutes to greet us and she could not answer simple questions about the wine list; said she would be right back with a little more information then we waited another 10 minutes. It was obvious she could not handle her section, and no manager in sight to help her. I then ordered a wine so we could not wait anymore. A nice wine around $70 for the bottle. Waited almost 20 minutes for the wine!!! I would have walked out if I was not in the biz. The wine should have been decanted and we asked but she ignored me or forgot. The rest of the service continued to be horrific and the food came out in the same manor. The server had no knowledge on the food menu and the food we ordered was flavorless. Will never return or recommend.

This restaurant is very serious about its wine program. Both the waiters and numerous sommeliers are well informed and able to provide good wine advice. Mostly Italian wines but nothing from the northern regions. It's a must visit for wine aficionados looking to explore more of Italy! Favourite dishes were the meatballs (daily special) and beet salad. Cheese lovers: order extra on the pizzas :)

Have heard nothing but great things about this place so I decided to celebrate my birthday here1. I honestly could not have been happier! Sincerely some of the best house made pasta I have ever tasted, and the pizza, . . . don't get me started, we'll leave it at, "it was perfect." I found the low-alcohol cocktails very innovative (mixed drinks based on vermouth, quinquina, and uniquely Italian aromatized wines). The selection of Italian wines did not disapppoint, either. The service was friendly, attentive, knowledgeable, accommodating, and they obviously took great pride in the place. NICE! I will definitely NOT be waiting another year to eat here again.

i have always liked A16 and have recommended it to many people. i was there last Thurs eve and sat outside on one of the few beautiful, balmy fall SF nights. The service and the ambiance were great, but the food was not. It was actually quite lackluster. My gf and i felt both like some cool greens to start and the only real option was a side salad of chicories. It was so over dressed that we both left soggy lettuce on the plate. Next i opted for the albacore tuna with green olives and she had burrata with fresh tomatoes. Both dishes were just so-so i am sorry to report. We did not finish either and had no desire to take home leftovers. Maybe the heat in the kitchen got to the chefs (and the burrata)?

A16 offers acceptable takes on what they describe as southern Italian food, with fashionably long lists of diverse ingredients. The pizze are Neapolitan-ish, in a number of combinations. Pasta plates come in full- and half portions, so you can have pasta as a primo even if you don't eat like a Campanian wolf. I've heard A16 described as 'good — for the Marina'. Good: firm black tonarelli • spicy duck salami (on an okay salumi plate) • sophisticated wine list Lackluster: bucatini more like flaccid fat spaghetti, barely hinting at the ostensible bottarga • very long wait to order, and overly fast delivery once we had No surprises, but no real errors.

Hostess/staff was overall amateur and not welcoming. Hostess blatantly roamed through the dining area with her clipboard assessing how long you would be until your table was free. Waiter was slow and had no sort of opinion on menu items. The food was ok but not great. The best thing about A16 was the attractive lady manning one of the hardest stations in the kitchen.

This remains a favorite restaurant of ours in San Francisco. Having eaten here on several occasions, the food is consistently delicious and the service is friendly yet professional. Of particular note is the knowledge and helpfulness of the sommelier. To a person, s/he proves to be expert with the wine list, making exquisite pairing recommendations for each dish. Moreover, we love that the food is purchased from local purveyors and farmers. This has always proven to be a great dining experience for us. Note: As parking offers a challenge, you might consider staying at a nearby hotel, walking to/from this conveniently located Marina location (and no need for a designated driver so all in your party can enjoy such an indulgence).

I've always loved this restaurant and the food/service is consistently great. I was excited to go with parents when they were in town as I know my father loves a good wine list. I do have to say that I was super disappointed to be crammed onto what felt like a two-top table when there were a few open tables that would have been more comfortable and not directly on the main thoroughfare (including a three-person corner table that sat vacant the entire time we were there).

We were sitting opposite the pizza oven, and the chef must have heard us drooling over the pizzas he was making, because he sent us one for free! That was the highlight of our meal. Other than that, the ingredients in my fish dish didn't match what the menu stated, and my date ordered his lamb medium-rare, but it arrived rare. Not one of our best experiences, food-wise. I think I'll stick to the pizza or pasta next time.

The Alaskan halibut my friend and I ordered was dry, a bit over cooked. My friend had cautioned the waiter about this before the order. Without hesitation, he removed both dishes and redid my friends halibut and took my new order, a pork hash dish which was great. On top of this, he comped our drinks. Some of the best service I've ever had.
