A word from A16 - San Francisco
A16 is a restaurant and wine bar bringing the delicious and hospitable traditions of lively Campania to San Francisco. The chic, rustic/modernist venue is named after the motorway that transverses
the South of Italy. The restaurant features wood oven-fired Neapolitan Pizza and other specialties of Campania such as Maccaronara with ragu napoletana and house-made ricotta salata. The wine bar serves 40 wines by the glass and half bottle carafe. The list is 60 percent Italian, mostly from the South, and the other 40 percent is New World, celebrating premiere Italian varietals grown in California along with many California wines.

this was fine, but no comparison whatsoever to SPQR. on the plus side, we could get a same-night reservation. there were some hints of excellent food, like the goat chop I ordered, however, disappointingly, the tiny goat chop was far outnumbered by the very bland goat sausage taking up most of the plate.

Pizza great, pasta Ok, great brown sugar dessert. Very expensive wine. Table next door screeching like banshees all night and though we were given free dessert (which we ate and it was good but didn't want, should have been given free wine or dinner) there was no apparent effort taken to ask them to reel it in. Took a long time between being seated and getting someone to take our order.

A16 always delivers. The food is fantastic, the atmosphere inviting, great service. We went with an Italian friend who rates A16 as very authentic food. Also very full wine list. For anyone who lives in the neighborhood, you're really lucky! Parking can be a challenge.

Dining here is always a pleasure! The waiter selected a flight of reds from Italy and we couldn't pick a favorite. The beet salad with burrata was perfect, and the stone fruit salad generous with prosciutto. Margharita pizza was excellent. Didn't save room for dessert this time, but we'll be back.

Took the server 10 minutes to greet us and she could not answer simple questions about the wine list; said she would be right back with a little more information then we waited another 10 minutes. It was obvious she could not handle her section, and no manager in sight to help her. I then ordered a wine so we could not wait anymore. A nice wine around $70 for the bottle. Waited almost 20 minutes for the wine!!! I would have walked out if I was not in the biz. The wine should have been decanted and we asked but she ignored me or forgot. The rest of the service continued to be horrific and the food came out in the same manor. The server had no knowledge on the food menu and the food we ordered was flavorless. Will never return or recommend.

This restaurant is very serious about its wine program. Both the waiters and numerous sommeliers are well informed and able to provide good wine advice. Mostly Italian wines but nothing from the northern regions. It's a must visit for wine aficionados looking to explore more of Italy! Favourite dishes were the meatballs (daily special) and beet salad. Cheese lovers: order extra on the pizzas :)

Have heard nothing but great things about this place so I decided to celebrate my birthday here1. I honestly could not have been happier! Sincerely some of the best house made pasta I have ever tasted, and the pizza, . . . don't get me started, we'll leave it at, "it was perfect." I found the low-alcohol cocktails very innovative (mixed drinks based on vermouth, quinquina, and uniquely Italian aromatized wines). The selection of Italian wines did not disapppoint, either. The service was friendly, attentive, knowledgeable, accommodating, and they obviously took great pride in the place. NICE! I will definitely NOT be waiting another year to eat here again.

i have always liked A16 and have recommended it to many people. i was there last Thurs eve and sat outside on one of the few beautiful, balmy fall SF nights. The service and the ambiance were great, but the food was not. It was actually quite lackluster. My gf and i felt both like some cool greens to start and the only real option was a side salad of chicories. It was so over dressed that we both left soggy lettuce on the plate. Next i opted for the albacore tuna with green olives and she had burrata with fresh tomatoes. Both dishes were just so-so i am sorry to report. We did not finish either and had no desire to take home leftovers. Maybe the heat in the kitchen got to the chefs (and the burrata)?

A16 offers acceptable takes on what they describe as southern Italian food, with fashionably long lists of diverse ingredients. The pizze are Neapolitan-ish, in a number of combinations. Pasta plates come in full- and half portions, so you can have pasta as a primo even if you don't eat like a Campanian wolf. I've heard A16 described as 'good — for the Marina'. Good: firm black tonarelli • spicy duck salami (on an okay salumi plate) • sophisticated wine list Lackluster: bucatini more like flaccid fat spaghetti, barely hinting at the ostensible bottarga • very long wait to order, and overly fast delivery once we had No surprises, but no real errors.

Hostess/staff was overall amateur and not welcoming. Hostess blatantly roamed through the dining area with her clipboard assessing how long you would be until your table was free. Waiter was slow and had no sort of opinion on menu items. The food was ok but not great. The best thing about A16 was the attractive lady manning one of the hardest stations in the kitchen.

I've always loved this restaurant and the food/service is consistently great. I was excited to go with parents when they were in town as I know my father loves a good wine list. I do have to say that I was super disappointed to be crammed onto what felt like a two-top table when there were a few open tables that would have been more comfortable and not directly on the main thoroughfare (including a three-person corner table that sat vacant the entire time we were there).

We were sitting opposite the pizza oven, and the chef must have heard us drooling over the pizzas he was making, because he sent us one for free! That was the highlight of our meal. Other than that, the ingredients in my fish dish didn't match what the menu stated, and my date ordered his lamb medium-rare, but it arrived rare. Not one of our best experiences, food-wise. I think I'll stick to the pizza or pasta next time.

We loved the food. It was extremely unique (in a good way), and very fresh ingredients. The only downside to the experience was that it was very very hot in the back room. Almost to the point where it's all you can think about. We stayed because the food was amazing...but they have to find a better vent for the heat coming from the wood oven.

The Alaskan halibut my friend and I ordered was dry, a bit over cooked. My friend had cautioned the waiter about this before the order. Without hesitation, he removed both dishes and redid my friends halibut and took my new order, a pork hash dish which was great. On top of this, he comped our drinks. Some of the best service I've ever had.

This was a disappointment. The halibut was badly overcooked and paired with a food that was a Pretty pink thing, but I could not figure out what it was. The mussels tasted like they were prepared with ketchup. The summer squash salad was interesting and had delicate flavors, and the squid was also tasty. Some hits, lots of misses. And it is loud and feels cramped.

The pizza crust was thin, crisp, and a little burned, which I like. I ordered the Salsiccia, which lists some interesting ingredients. It was heavy on the mozzarella, I only got a few bites of the delicious chilis, and I could not taste the roasted spring onions. I also ordered the Trippa Napoletana, which also had some enticing ingredients listed. What it did not say is that it was tripe stew. In retrospect, the English and Italian words are obviously similar, but how was I to know the translation? Yuck! I sent it back. Lastly, I sat on a bench seat facing the staged kitchen. During my entire lunch, they butchered a whole hog in front of me. Why did they do this unusual performance? To me it was unappetizing.

I had made a reservation with opentable and asked for a quiet table since I was dining with my g randparents. They had put us in the room in the back with a group of about 10 gentlemen next to us - not quiet at all. We asked to be placed inside since there were openings and they glady let us, but warned us there may be another reservation at 8 (ours was at 6:30). We ordered and ate in a timely manner - our waitress was very great - but then the hostess came up to us as we were about to order coffee/dessert and rudely made us get up and have my grandparents finish their coffee at the bar. The most frustrating part was the next party didn't arrive for 25 minutes after we were told to leave. Ruined the experience.

Menu hasn't changed much because what they do works. They are also certified to make Neapolitan pizzas and they do it very well. The day I went, there wasn't as much for vegetarians with exception of pizza, but other times I've seen more veggie options. They seemed to have changed the seating a little bit so that diners don't feel crammed in like I remember on previous visits. Service was excellent, very lively atmosphere. My wife and I were vacationing in San Francisco and went to this restaurant on a recommendation from a friend. It was fully packed and we were sat in front of the kitchen, which was interesting to watch. After our hors d'oeuvres and some great California wine, we received our pizzas which were absolutely delicious. Sometime throughout the process, the chef had felt that the quality of the dough was not up to snuff and we were surprised to see that we were comped for our pizzas on the bill. We were shocked, as they had exceeded our expectations already. The staff was all very friendly and insisted that we didn't pay for them. Overall, A16 is a great spot with delectable food and friendly service.

I would say this restaurant is not worth any effort to go to: the food is not remarkable, the interior is not remarkable, the service is not remarkable. I guess I should say it's ordinary. The one thing that is not ordinary is that you may see large butchered animals laying on the counters within the restaurant seating area and that there may be an olfactory consequence. So, if you've always wanted to dine within a slaughterhouse, then, this is the place for you. For the rest of you civilized beings, don't bother. However, if you do go, the desserts and Flying Goat coffee are terrific.
