A word from A16 - San Francisco
A16 is a restaurant and wine bar bringing the delicious and hospitable traditions of lively Campania to San Francisco. The chic, rustic/modernist venue is named after the motorway that transverses
the South of Italy. The restaurant features wood oven-fired Neapolitan Pizza and other specialties of Campania such as Maccaronara with ragu napoletana and house-made ricotta salata. The wine bar serves 40 wines by the glass and half bottle carafe. The list is 60 percent Italian, mostly from the South, and the other 40 percent is New World, celebrating premiere Italian varietals grown in California along with many California wines.

  • "A professionally run eatery,,,like an assembly line, warm smiles and how was it, are asked as one is about to get the bill. ( tips are important) My waiter knew his business, but I do not think he knows how to listen.. and disliked any conversation. SALT,,,,,next time I go I will ask to lay off the salt.....I drank 3 glasses of water when I got home.... The Tables need to be adjusted so they do not wobble. This is the 2nd time I have had a wobbly table. Other then that the food is Good,,,,,A 16 knows this and neglects other aspects of their eatery, such as I have mentioned. Thank you"

  • "Service was excellent. Had great suggestions for dinner and wine. Food was mixed. Pizza - our table had two pizzas to share and they were really outstanding. Highly recommend. Kale Salad - very good. Highly recommend. Octopus appetizer - very good but very small and not inexpensive @ $17. Pasta - can't recall the name - large tubes with a tomato based sauce and fish (swordfish?)... Pasta was really under cooked (almost crunchy) and the sauce lacked much zip. Overall wouldn't recommend or repeat this dish. Generally, it was a 3.5 star experience. Service was awesome and my mouth is still watering thinking about the pizza."

  • "Most notable item was the pleasant waitress who deserved the large tip we left. Overall vibe reminded me of the Union street of a few decades ago -- drinks first and food second; definitely not a place for a leisurely meal -- go to soak in the overall frantic atmosphere and feel like it's exciting. Food is overshadowed by the environment -- either enhanced or diminished depending on your mood at the time. Both locals and tourists seem to frequent. Plan on spending time looking for parking; remember Italian means heavy on garlic and red pepper as in most places in this city (unlike in Italy). If it mellows and ages a bit over time, it will get better."

  • "There's a lot to like about A16. It's fun, vibrant, friendly, and the food is always good. The chefs at A16 are smart enough not to mess with what they do best. The salads are fresh and seasonal. The burrata is decadently rich and creamy. The pastas are house-nade is cooked perfectly. But it is the pizzas that still the show. Wood-oven fired, crispy and topped with fresh ingredients, these are pizzas that make you happy. And keep you coming back. The wine list is large, but carefully edited and offers a good selection of wines by the carafe (375 ml). Service can be a bit too attentive and make the diner feel a bit rushed, but overall the waitstaff is competent and friendly. A16 continues to be a favorite for locals and visitors alike."

  • "Anyone who thinks that A16 is an overpriced "pizza joint" needs new taste buds. Not only is the predominately Italian wine list by the glass full of wonderful choices, the waitstaff is definitely knowledgeable and can match something that you will love to your preferences and desires. The hand-made pizzas are magnificently designed. I'm extremely fond of the the Roma, but I'm sure that there is no bad choice. Try it midweek and early so that it's not too crowded and you'll have time to chat with the excellent wait staff."

  • "Was looking forward to eating here. I was especially wanting to try their pizza. I had a Margherita with house made fennel sausage. It was good although a bit overpriced in my view. My wife had clams in red sauce. She thought they were well prepared. We had ricotta cheese cake for desert which was more like a flan rather than typical ricotta cake which I have had many times. It was tasty but not what I expected. Overall the food was good but pricey."

  • "We had a nice dinner at A16 with friends on a Friday night. The service was excellent and the wine was amazing. We split a pizza to start, which was the highlight of the night. My three companions all head different pastas, which were also quite excellent. Unfortunately, the pork chop I ordered, while ample in size, was overcooked, tough, and dry. I would go back for the pizza, however."

  • "Hmmm ... A16 has a really good reputation, It's a shame I found it disappointing, very (!!) cramped, rushed, loud, unromantic, and massively disappointing. For some random reason our side orders came out as starters, no biggie, just weird. The pasta dish my girlfriend ordered was completely bland and tasteless, clearly the chef is not tasting his fillings or sauces. A restaurant this busy is not kid friendly, especially when parents let their kids be loud and obnoxious. The only complements I have to offer are that my steak was well seasoned and the staff polite. It's an expensive "meh" Italian, and we were the only diners who'd made an effort to dress for dinner. You would do well to keep clear if you're feeling romantic."

  • "Went to A16 on a Sunday evening. Overall, it was a good experience hindered by finding a parking place (a major hassle!). The food was excellent except the cannelloni beans were way overcooked and resembled mush. Wine list is unique and wine steward very helpful. Would return if I was assured I wouldn't have so much trouble finding a place to park as no valet was available."

  • "As an owner of my own pizza oven, was very disappointed to have all the toppings come off of my pizza. Had the sardine and olive with a red sauce. Sauce extremely watery!!! What's with the pizza cutting with scissors?? Waiter said it maintains the integrity of the crust????? If that's the case, then why am I cutting my pizza in the first place? Doesn't make sense, and felt like a senior citizen sample cutter at Costco. Great bar, fun vibe until you are seated then everyone is just jammed into a very loud room. Very little elbow room. Should have gotten the fungi pizza it looked wonderful. Think best bet is to stay away from the tomato sauce, unless you love losing the entire top of your pie! And noise level very loud!"

  • "A16 is a terrific restaurant however the tables are so close together and the noise level so loud that it offsets the fabulous food. Since the tables were so close together, the waiter/waitress had too many people to serve. He/she was busy and non existent as the meal progressed. The wine list is extensive and great however overwhelming but for a foodie this would have been no problem. We did have a wine expert who happened to walk past our table and heard us discussing the choices. She helped us immensely. If the wine expert had not walked by I am not sure when we would've been given a glass of wine. However, the food was terrific!"

  • "Had been to the restaurant when it first opened with the original partners and the food, service and wine were very good. This visit was different, food was still very good but a bit pricey and the service was less than stellar. Had a bad waiter and the overall lack of genuine hospitality was disappointing, felt like it had turned into a corporate type of management with focus on getting check average up and lack of attention and service to guests who appeared to be tourists or not big spenders. Will never return or recommend."

  • "I highly recommend this Marina restaurant. My wife and I are a retired couple and thought we might stick out, demographically, from your typical Marina crowd. We didn't. There were all kinds of folks there, obviously interested in the good food, service and wines. We were seated near the very back of the room. Our server, seeing my perplexity at the hundreds of predominately Italian wines, helped us decide on a great Italian Cabernet Franc. Pizza from the wood fired oven was excellent tasting but the crust was too limp for my taste. Pasta with Swordfish, the best I have eaten, perfectly prepared and seasoned. Same for the gnocchi. Asparagus side looked and tasted wonderful. Chard was good. Desserts, Great. Table clothes would help."

  • "This review is from September 2013, 4 diners. We are vegetarians. My wife and daughter had assured me from their past visits we would have choices on the pasta (not pizza) menu. Not this night. Our waitress was no help. Our wine steward saved the day, as he intervened with the kitchen and came back with some ideas for pasta that we ordered. Wine service was exceptional. Incredibly diverse and well done wine list, fairly priced. Food was mixed. Salads were excellent. The pasta entrees underwhelming. The pasta is freshly made and well done. But the rest was nothing I would remember or feel compelled to return for. So not what I expected. If I do go back, it will be for the wine, with no high expectations for a memorable vegetarian meal."

Perhaps that it is part of the problem. This time it was soggy pizza, an uninteresting octopus appetizer and an uninspired pasta with short rib ragu. We won't go back. Bistro Aix is a much better bet in the neighborhood."

  • "This is an energetic environment, especially active for a weekday evening. The ambience is lively and loud. If you are hoping to have a quality conversation, this is not the spot. I was a few feet away from my guest and had to yell to be heard. The service was great and very friendly. Food was scrumptious, in small portions. Good italian wines."

  • "Great food, excellent service, terrible table. I made a reservation for a party of four several days in advance. We arrived a few moments early for our reservation and waited about 20-30 minutes before we were seated. The host led us to a table in the wine bar. Several other very noisy diners were also seated nearby.The noise level was beyond cacophonous. I have previously dined at this restaurant and was expecting a seat in the back area of the restaurant. I informed the host that the table was unacceptable and asked for a table in the back. The hostess told us that she did not have any tables in the back available. We were rudely brushed off and not offered any other options. Extremely disappointed at the way we were treated."

  • "A16 is one of my favorite restaurants, both for regular treats and special occasions. The staff are usually friendly and the meal is satisfying and fulfilling. Unfortunately, it must have been an off night for their sea bass this time. It was spongelike and overcooked, contrary to the usual careful preparation and exquisite taste. I was disappointed, but I am hoping that this is not representative of a trending trajectory, and merely an uncharacteristic fluke."

The waiter , when asked hat he would suggest... went straight to the two most expensive ones on the menu... first test fail!!! Service was not great rushed at times... then ignored....75.00 meal ..tasty but over priced. I had not been in a long time... probably will be a long time to go back"
