A word from A16 - San Francisco
A16 is a restaurant and wine bar bringing the delicious and hospitable traditions of lively Campania to San Francisco. The chic, rustic/modernist venue is named after the motorway that transverses
the South of Italy. The restaurant features wood oven-fired Neapolitan Pizza and other specialties of Campania such as Maccaronara with ragu napoletana and house-made ricotta salata. The wine bar serves 40 wines by the glass and half bottle carafe. The list is 60 percent Italian, mostly from the South, and the other 40 percent is New World, celebrating premiere Italian varietals grown in California along with many California wines.

This was a disappointment. The halibut was badly overcooked and paired with a food that was a Pretty pink thing, but I could not figure out what it was. The mussels tasted like they were prepared with ketchup. The summer squash salad was interesting and had delicate flavors, and the squid was also tasty. Some hits, lots of misses. And it is loud and feels cramped.

There were four of us. The waiter was rude, and did not answer our questions. Additionally he set one table but did not set our side. Another waiter set ours when he saw what was happening. I ordered a cappinicino and got espresso. The waiter did not change out the coffee...just walked away. He should be fired.

Excellent food! We enjoyed the Stone fruit salad and the amazing meatballs.....cannot think of meatballs this good anywhere else! Servers are very knowledgable, friendly, and helpful! Very nice choice of wines by the glass. There is a three course fixed price lunch available at a reasonable price (and those meatballs are one of the choices!).

The pizza crust was thin, crisp, and a little burned, which I like. I ordered the Salsiccia, which lists some interesting ingredients. It was heavy on the mozzarella, I only got a few bites of the delicious chilis, and I could not taste the roasted spring onions. I also ordered the Trippa Napoletana, which also had some enticing ingredients listed. What it did not say is that it was tripe stew. In retrospect, the English and Italian words are obviously similar, but how was I to know the translation? Yuck! I sent it back. Lastly, I sat on a bench seat facing the staged kitchen. During my entire lunch, they butchered a whole hog in front of me. Why did they do this unusual performance? To me it was unappetizing.

I had made a reservation with opentable and asked for a quiet table since I was dining with my g randparents. They had put us in the room in the back with a group of about 10 gentlemen next to us - not quiet at all. We asked to be placed inside since there were openings and they glady let us, but warned us there may be another reservation at 8 (ours was at 6:30). We ordered and ate in a timely manner - our waitress was very great - but then the hostess came up to us as we were about to order coffee/dessert and rudely made us get up and have my grandparents finish their coffee at the bar. The most frustrating part was the next party didn't arrive for 25 minutes after we were told to leave. Ruined the experience.

Menu hasn't changed much because what they do works. They are also certified to make Neapolitan pizzas and they do it very well. The day I went, there wasn't as much for vegetarians with exception of pizza, but other times I've seen more veggie options. They seemed to have changed the seating a little bit so that diners don't feel crammed in like I remember on previous visits. Service was excellent, very lively atmosphere. Corkage is $30 and waived if you buy a bottle.

My wife and I were vacationing in San Francisco and went to this restaurant on a recommendation from a friend. It was fully packed and we were sat in front of the kitchen, which was interesting to watch. After our hors d'oeuvres and some great California wine, we received our pizzas which were absolutely delicious. Sometime throughout the process, the chef had felt that the quality of the dough was not up to snuff and we were surprised to see that we were comped for our pizzas on the bill. We were shocked, as they had exceeded our expectations already. The staff was all very friendly and insisted that we didn't pay for them. Overall, A16 is a great spot with delectable food and friendly service.

I would say this restaurant is not worth any effort to go to: the food is not remarkable, the interior is not remarkable, the service is not remarkable. I guess I should say it's ordinary. The one thing that is not ordinary is that you may see large butchered animals laying on the counters within the restaurant seating area and that there may be an olfactory consequence. So, if you've always wanted to dine within a slaughterhouse, then, this is the place for you. For the rest of you civilized beings, don't bother. However, if you do go, the desserts and Flying Goat coffee are terrific.

After arriving promptly at 9pm, we were not seated until 35 minutes after our reservation time -- and without a sincere apology for the backup. We were also seated at the first table in the section that was clearly reserved for "walk-ins." With the exception of our waitress (who was very sweet and accommodating), the remainder of the staff rushed us through our meal and we ever overheard another staff person refer to us as "lingerers." Perhaps, if we were to been seated at the proper time, our meal would not have extended into closing hours. The food is decent but it does not compensate for the pretentious attitude.

I loved everything we ordered here! We heard the burrata was fantastic and it certainly lived up to the hype. We also had a pizza and a pasta and gelato, all were excellent. My only issue with the food was that I couldn't finish everything! Our server was alright but not impressive however, the hostesses were excellent and the woman who handles all the wine was incredibly sweet and helpful. Overall, a great experience.

A 16 is known in SF - especially when it comes to pizza + pastas. A friend came into town who really wanted to go, so I decided to try it again. I had the funghi pizza. Is was good. I don't have any complaints - but it wasn't any better than other places. I wouldn't go out of my way for it. My friend has a lot of allergies (gluten, dairy) and also doesn't eat meat. She got the albacore and it was strange. The texture was like chicken and it didn't seem to have a lot of flavor. We asked the server when we sat down about menu items that would work for her, but the server wasn't familiar with what was gluten free and my friend actually caught her advising wrong on a few items. She tried hard, but servers need to be better trained.

Would not let me have a taste of the wine before ordering it. Service was amateur. Waitress clearing our plates brought dirty fisher from another table to out table. One pizza was especially good. Other pizza and mussels not memorable. Pasta dishes boring

We had been here before, but honestly I forgot how good A-16 is. Everything was just spectacular. The menu at A-16 feels contemporary, and they have a broad range of options that are all very different. We started with the melon salad. Completely caught me off guard. A must order. I usually don't order pasta out; most Italian pastas seem repetitive and too subtle. The pasta I had at a-16 was fantastic. We shared a pizza too, and it was really good. Crust was flawless. The staff picked 2 bottles of wine for us (after a brief discussion about what we like), and we loved each one. The staff showed us a great time, and we'll definitely return.

Invited my foodie cousin to A16 and he was impressed. Service was very good although the wine could have come more quickly as the restaurant was not exceptionally busy. The food was superb! The fish portion was rather small however, whereas the size of the meat (lamb) entree was extremely large! My cousin arrived 10 minutes early and was not allowed to be seated even though the restaurant had many free seats, so you might think about changing that policy.

First of all, we got seated in the outside "cry room" which looked to be an afterthought of an addition to the restaurant. We had a reservation and with only two tables in the whole place taken, I think they should have offered us a much better table location. The menu definitely needs some more traditional selections, (like lasagne, cannelloni, ect.) and more pasta vegetarian choices as well. My husband's chicken was bland at best and my mushroom pizza was completely average. We got help from the Sommelier in selecting a wine, shortly thereafter I was not feeling well...need I say more? The one positive is that our waitress was adorable and very attentive, friendly and helpful. Oh and no spirits?! A downer for sure!

It has been awhile since I had dinner here but I had remembered it being really good. Reservation was not ready (15 min wait) Table was terrible as in it was sandwiched between 2 other tables (I could not push my chair back for bumping into the person behind me) Food over all was ok. Nothing stood out or said I need to go back and have it again. Service was a bit slow after the appetizers and they did not refill water glasses. I like to leave a restaurant thinking when 'can I go back?'. I did not have that feeling.

We have been to the Bay area many times. Experiencing food in a new and unique way at A16 was a real treat. We came for lunch and chose seats at the counter to be close to the action. An open kitchen gives diners a view to the skill and effort needed to create a truly excellent dining experience. The staff made our meal fun as we chatted with them and watched "the show." Each course was created, presented, and served with enthusiasm. We started with an olive assortment with bread (loved them both!) Our salads were a treat, with an abundance of familiar and surprise elements like squash flower. The fungi pizza made in the woods fired oven was filling and scrumptious. Our peach crostata and gelato desserts were to die for! We'll be back!
