A16 restaurant is named for the highway connecting Campania to Puglia and the menu is rooted in the rustic traditions of these lively southern Italian regions. The wine list highlights southern Italian varietals and over 40 wines are available by the glass and half-bottle carafe. They comped us a cookie plate for our birthday, but that included on the bill, and we had to ask to have it removed. No need to go back here again, plenty of good eating in the Bay Area!"

  • "Pizza is fantastic, we rate it in our top 5, which include Napaoli Italy, and Paia flat bread in Maui, so we are no stranger to good pizza. The stone fruit and speck salad delicious. Unfortunately the service is not as good as the food. Waited several minutes for hostess to great us at the door - there was no one else waiting..... And then several minutes after we sat - no service in sight.....service in between courses was also VERY slow."

  • "read enthusiastic reviews about SF location, and was anxious to try East Bay sibling. food is good, imaginative and delicious. caveat: there is insufficient staff during Sunday brunch. single server waited on at least ten tables, and the service, including kitchen prep, was painfully slow. when I mentioned to the host, she was detached and showed no concern or curiosity. our waiter was earnest, however, and simply needed backup. learned that two restaurants are different corp. entities."

  • "Had dinner here the other evening with my boyfriend. The waitstaff was probably the absolute best part about our dining experience. The host, server and busser were all very friendly, prompt, and helpful. Nothing on the menu really stood out to us, so we just decided to order two appetizers and share a pizza. We ordered the ahi tuna carpaccio and the burrata. Both were actually incredibly tasty! We ordered a marinara pizza and added proscuitto and egg. The crust was amazing, flavors were good...but no cheese on the pizza. I guess it didn't mention any cheese on the ingredients, but I thought it's because it's just a given that there was cheese...I guess not...So...taste was there, but it wasn't really my kind of pizza."

  • "They had a different menu for the 4th of July. Overall the food was very good except for one entree which was terrible. The service was poor and uncoordinated. We ordered salads, then a pizza to share followed by the entrees. They started delivering entrees before the pizza and we sent them back. They kept asking when are we going to be ready for entrees while we were still sharing the pizza (which was excellent). When the entrees arrived one was missing and it took some time to get it ordered and delivered. The restaurant took the bad entree off the bill and compted the delayed items. The advice on wine was spot on and I savored the final glass at home."

This time, we were seated in the back dining room which was richly, but simply decorated and totally lacked the ambiance we enjoyed during our first two visits. If you want to enjoyed the whole experience, insist on being seated in the front dining room. All this aside, we still enjoyed the meal itself. The food is definitely a big step up from the production line food offered at some of the other "better" restaurants."

  • "We had read many good things about A16 but were basically ignorant of its style. What a delight to discover a regional restaurant here in Rockridge. The most amazing thing was that every dish, be it an appetizer, a side, a main course, a pizza or a pasta had a very distinct flavor that was different from all the others. Many "ethnic" restaurants (and Italian is an ethnicity) all too frequently have many dishes tasting similar to each other. Not so at A16 and it was this distinction among dishes that made the experience so enjoyable."

The ink-braised cuttlefish was just a tad salty. My pasta with vegetables was excellent. We'll go again, for sure. I am looking forward to the pizza menu as my next meal."

  • "I have been to A16 twice in the last 2 weeks and I can't wait to go again! Have been making my way through the various pizza offerings, although I suspect the selections change frequently. We started with delicious and original cocktails. We sampled the burrata plate which came with enough crostini (I'm bothered when you have to ask for more crostini) and fresh cherry tomatoes. Also tried the kohlrabi and fennel salad which was perfectly dressed and so very fresh and enlivened tasting. We loved the farro and spinach side which is largely farro (excellent if you love farro) with bits of sauteed spinach mixed in. Made same day reservations on Open Table. Only complaint...it's really noisy and so difficult to hear your dining friends."

My dining partner was beside me, not even across the table, and we had to shout to hear each other. When it was Garibaldi's, it was a lot more attractive. Now, it just feels stark. Food was great, but we really were ready to get out of there..."

  • "Our server was very helpful and attentive, and while the food was quite tasty I didn't think it was anything spectacular. My husband had the salmon which he said was cooked perfectly and I had the Duck "crepes" which were nice but I couldn't taste the duck for the cheese and tomato sauce. The Sorbet for dessert was divine and was the perfect summer treat. Sadly, I cannot say the same for the chocolate tart with sea salt, dollops of lemon cream, roasted rosemary, and honeycomb things on the side. If you're going to serve a chocolate tart, I want be able to taste the chocolate. This venue wass LOUD. We went at 8 pm on a Tuesday night. The place was packed and one cannot hold a conversation in a normal tone of voice."

I had checked their menu online and needed Wikipedia's help to understand some items. At the restaurant the menu had been slightly tweaked but mostly included what I had decided upon. The cocktail was very good, the appetizer was decadent. The pasta was al dente and delicious. A small strawberry sorbet provided a fine, sweet ending. Would return."

Anyone who says that only Northern Italian food is worthy should give this a try and they know pizza. We now have a late night option in Oakland. Lovely decor and open feel with kitchen and forno a legna visible gave it a fun feel."

  • "Once again, I had a wonderful meal at A16. The Buratta with dragoncello and pistachios was amazing. Deep fried olives? Who would have thought they could be so delicious. My pork chop was perfectly cooked, and the cherries that topped it were not overly sweet. For dessert: chocolate tart with sea salt and rosemary cream. Heavenly. Oh, and the wine list is excellent, and the cocktails delectable. I had a "Broken Halo", and I can't wait to have another."

  • "Atmosphere is nice and good place to have a meal with friends. However, I was not impressed with the food. Had an appetizer, entree, and dessert and the dessert was the best thing about the meal. Appetizer was okay and the entree (rigatoni) was super greasy to the point where I just chose not to eat it. Our server was nice but not really on top of the service. My friends had better luck with their meals and seemed to enjoy their food more than I did. Probably will not return."

  • "Our dinner at A 16's Oakland branch was a terrible experience. We really liked the San Francisco restaurant so we were very excited to see them open up in our neighborhood, but as often happens with restaurants when they expand, the quality goes down. While our pizza was fine, I can't say how the linguine with seafood was because it was stone cold by the time it got to us so I didn't eat it. The lamb was over cooked unless medium rare now includes meat that is gray all the way through. The dishes were served out of order too. While the manager was extremely apologetic and offered to redo the dishes, we had a meter running on a baby sitter so we passed. They comped us the food but still never again and I say the same for the original spot."

Our server was very nice and asked how our meals were, but we were afraid of running late to our show if we returned our food.   • "The good: -waitstaff was generally attentitive and courteous -the roast calamari with fava beans was excellent. The bad: -pizza was undercooked. Parts of the crust still had a doughy consistency -salad had way too much dressing. It also lacked balance with the vinegar being completely dominant. -Pastas. The sugo with rigatoni was pretty good but the lamb sausage pasta was swimming in oil. The bottom of the bowl was covered with an oil slick. -our side order of snap peas had too much heat from the chilis. Overall, We expected better execution from the kitchen staff. "
