Diner Reviews
  • "Excellent food and service. Our waitress was especially knowledgeable and helpful, especially with the wines which are largely non-Californian."

  • "The best place for a relaxed dinner - either with friends or just as a couple. Always interesting wine with simple and delicious food."

  • "They had a different menu for the 4th of July. Overall the food was very good except for one entree which was terrible. The service was poor and uncoordinated. We ordered salads, then a pizza to share followed by the entrees. They started delivering entrees before the pizza and we sent them back. They kept asking when are we going to be ready for entrees while we were still sharing the pizza (which was excellent). When the entrees arrived one was missing and it took some time to get it ordered and delivered. The restaurant took the bad entree off the bill and compted the delayed items. The advice on wine was spot on and I savored the final glass at home."

  • "The food, cocktails, meal and dessert were so good as well as lovely in presentation. On top of that as several of us hand;t seen each other for a while, we occupied the table for three to four hours on a Sunday night and never felt we were imposing."

  • "We have eaten at this restaurant two times before and had a great time in the front dining room. This time, we were seated in the back dining room which was richly, but simply decorated and totally lacked the ambiance we enjoyed during our first two visits. If you want to enjoyed the whole experience, insist on being seated in the front dining room. All this aside, we still enjoyed the meal itself. The food is definitely a big step up from the production line food offered at some of the other "better" restaurants."

  • " We had heard so much about this restaurant and actually been to the S.F. location. The ambiance was great but noisy. The server said the special was a large portion which proved to be average and the salmon came out cold. The pizza selected was underwhelming."

  • "We had read many good things about A16 but were basically ignorant of its style. What a delight to discover a regional restaurant here in Rockridge. The most amazing thing was that every dish, be it an appetizer, a side, a main course, a pizza or a pasta had a very distinct flavor that was different from all the others. Many "ethnic" restaurants (and Italian is an ethnicity) all too frequently have many dishes tasting similar to each other. Not so at A16 and it was this distinction among dishes that made the experience so enjoyable."

  • " I so want to adore this place..The College Ave scene just continues to improve and expand...Servers are caring and knowledgable.. the pizza is special ( try adding a couple of eggs...yumm); Most of the food is simply "meh" other than the fried corona beans which should be an appetizer unto themselves..a simple food brought to stellar levels; I'll be back!!"

  • "The food was absolutely fabulous. The service was great too. We let the waitress recommend single glasses of wine because my friend wanted white and I wanted red. Neither of us liked what she recommended and without hesitation she brought us different glasses that we both liked better. Everything was super yummy."

  • "It was my first visit to A16 Rockridge. It is a lovely space. All of the staff were excellent. The menu is brief, manageable, and interesting. We shared a burrata (sp?) and it was delicious. The ink-braised cuttlefish was just a tad salty. My pasta with vegetables was excellent. We'll go again, for sure. I am looking forward to the pizza menu as my next meal."

  • "The menu was way beyond my comprehension, both in the food choices and the lack of English . My server was good, recommended two wines to go with my dinner and they were spot on, if overly priced."

  • "I have been to A16 twice in the last 2 weeks and I can't wait to go again! Have been making my way through the various pizza offerings, although I suspect the selections change frequently. We started with delicious and original cocktails. We sampled the burrata plate which came with enough crostini (I'm bothered when you have to ask for more crostini) and fresh cherry tomatoes. Also tried the kohlrabi and fennel salad which was perfectly dressed and so very fresh and enlivened tasting. We loved the farro and spinach side which is largely farro (excellent if you love farro) with bits of sauteed spinach mixed in. Made same day reservations on Open Table. Only complaint...it's really noisy and so difficult to hear your dining friends."

  • "Menu incomprehensible unless you speak Italian. We speak English, Spanish, Greek, and French...but not Italian. My dining partner was beside me, not even across the table, and we had to shout to hear each other. When it was Garibaldi's, it was a lot more attractive. Now, it just feels stark. Food was great, but we really were ready to get out of there..."

  • "Our server was very helpful and attentive, and while the food was quite tasty I didn't think it was anything spectacular. My husband had the salmon which he said was cooked perfectly and I had the Duck "crepes" which were nice but I couldn't taste the duck for the cheese and tomato sauce. The Sorbet for dessert was divine and was the perfect summer treat. Sadly, I cannot say the same for the chocolate tart with sea salt, dollops of lemon cream, roasted rosemary, and honeycomb things on the side. If you're going to serve a chocolate tart, I want be able to taste the chocolate. This venue wass LOUD. We went at 8 pm on a Tuesday night. The place was packed and one cannot hold a conversation in a normal tone of voice."

  • "Had a great dinner at A16 on Friday with friends. Super service, delicious food, and as always great wine that I've only found at A16."

  • "Had not been to A16 in Rockridge although it has been open more than one year. The experience was all positive. I had checked their menu online and needed Wikipedia's help to understand some items. At the restaurant the menu had been slightly tweaked but mostly included what I had decided upon. The cocktail was very good, the appetizer was decadent. The pasta was al dente and delicious. A small strawberry sorbet provided a fine, sweet ending. Would return."

  • "Every course we had from appetizers to pizzas to desserts were amazing. We dined qute late on a Sunday evening and the staff was terrific. wine list was extensive, entirely Southern Italian. Anyone who says that only Northern Italian food is worthy should give this a try and they know pizza. We now have a late night option in Oakland. Lovely decor and open feel with kitchen and forno a legna visible gave it a fun feel."

  • "Once again, I had a wonderful meal at A16. The Buratta with dragoncello and pistachios was amazing. Deep fried olives? Who would have thought they could be so delicious. My pork chop was perfectly cooked, and the cherries that topped it were not overly sweet. For dessert: chocolate tart with sea salt and rosemary cream. Heavenly. Oh, and the wine list is excellent, and the cocktails delectable. I had a "Broken Halo", and I can't wait to have another."

  • "Atmosphere is nice and good place to have a meal with friends. However, I was not impressed with the food. Had an appetizer, entree, and dessert and the dessert was the best thing about the meal. Appetizer was okay and the entree (rigatoni) was super greasy to the point where I just chose not to eat it. Our server was nice but not really on top of the service. My friends had better luck with their meals and seemed to enjoy their food more than I did. Probably will not return."

  • "Made reservations for our anniversary and they seated us at a nice, quiet table. Great service, we wanted to take our time and our server never rushed us. Everything was coursed out perfectly. Great wine list and we got some amazing wine recommendations by the somm. Skipped dessert, but they sent out some little treats with our check for our anniversary. Very nice touch! Wonderful experience and we wouldn't change a thing! Looking forward to returning."

  • "Our dinner at A 16's Oakland branch was a terrible experience. We really liked the San Francisco restaurant so we were very excited to see them open up in our neighborhood, but as often happens with restaurants when they expand, the quality goes down. While our pizza was fine, I can't say how the linguine with seafood was because it was stone cold by the time it got to us so I didn't eat it. The lamb was over cooked unless medium rare now includes meat that is gray all the way through. The dishes were served out of order too. While the manager was extremely apologetic and offered to redo the dishes, we had a meter running on a baby sitter so we passed. They comped us the food but still never again and I say the same for the original spot."

  • "My fiance and I were really looking forward to his birthday dinner at A16. However, his pork chop was too salty and the side of farro was oily and bland. Our server was very nice and asked how our meals were, but we were afraid of running late to our show if we returned our food. The table next to us return an entree and this kept the table waiting for some time. "

  • "We had Sunday brunch at A16. Very easy street parking. Service was excellent, starting with the greeting at the door. The room was quiet, great for conversation—though there was one small child who shrieked infrequently. The Brunch menu was excellent and the food was VERY tasty; some unusual dishes with carefully selected ingredients. Entrees were all under $20, some well under $20. I had a desert, though I seldom do this. Dark chocolate tart. Wait staff was extremely knowledgable and helpful. "

  • "Chewy pasta and snooty service. Wine and dessert were high points. Not worth a second visit."

  • "The good: -waitstaff was generally attentitive and courteous -the roast calamari with fava beans was excellent. The bad: -pizza was undercooked. Parts of the crust still had a doughy consistency -salad had way too much dressing. It also lacked balance with the vinegar being completely dominant. -Pastas. The sugo with rigatoni was pretty good but the lamb sausage pasta was swimming in oil. The bottom of the bowl was covered with an oil slick. -our side order of snap peas had too much heat from the chilis. Overall, We expected better execution from the kitchen staff. "

  • "From the appetizers (burrata, salmon tartare) to the pizzas to the sorbets for dessert, all outstanding, combined with flawless service, leads me to strongly recommend A16."

  • "From cocktails to dessert, it was a delicious meal with friendly and knowledgeable staff. The Black Dahlia cocktail was refreshing and not too sweet. My steak was perfectly cooked, as were the sides (potatoes and leeks). The dessert, a chocolate tart, was fabulous. I can't wait to go back!"

  • "Our waitperson was Raley. She is terrific. Very charming, professional and thoughtful. knowing it was our anniversary, she started us out with a complimentary glass of champagne and candles in our dessert. She was attentive throughout the evening. And of course, cannot end this without a comment about the food. Just great! It was romantic and wonderful evening for my wife and me."

  • "We love A16 in the City so were pleased that this location is just as great! Pizzas are wonderful of course, and the king salmon with fresh peas was perfect. The best thing we had was the fried potatoes with ceci beans--the best! However, the service was sorely wanting. Our appetizers cam before our drinks, which wouldn't be so bad, but that was probably 15 minutes after we ordered them. Our waitress just disappeared. When the drinks finally came, there was no apology. I'll go back. They are probably just ironing things out."

  • "This is a rustic, comfortable, generous and personable restaurant. The menu and wine list are constantly yet subtlety changing although a number of favorites are usually available. Anything from the sea is typically very good here. I tend toward the antipasti, pizza and pasta, and can't really comment on the entrees. The cocktails are creative and satisfying. Last Saturday I started with an el pepe cocktail, and the smokiness of the mescal was a terrific antecedent to the montanara pizza's smoky tomato sauce. "

  • "Another fantastic meal at A16 Rockridge. We introduced two more friends to our favorite restaurant. They loved it. The anchovy with green almonds were addictive, and the squid ink pasta was served with sea urchin that night, making it amazing. All that goodness, and still the wine list is what brings me back again and again. "

  • "Went for dinner on a Thursday night. We walked in with kids and got a funny luck... I guess with kids they sit you outside of the main dining area (table near the bar). Service was a bit slow - pacing of the meal was not great and even drinks from the bar - which we were sitting next to - was not great. Food was good, some interesting combinations, but really nothing that had a wow factor. I wanted to try to the squid in pasta... I looked pretty tasty when the table next to us ordered it. We have heard a lot of people rave about A16 in SF and about this location in Rockridge... this was a good experience, not sure if we would hurry to go back."

  • "I took a chance taking my mom here for Mother's Day based solely on reviews, but it was everything we'd hoped. I'd say our meal pushed the bar up on Italian food. The slightly fried pizza crusts are phenomenal. Service was polite and engaged. When we thought an item was forgotten before we had time to ask the issue was already resolved. Our party left feeling liked we'd had one of those special dining experiences."
