A word from A Tavola
Farm to Table, Eclectic Italian
Chef Vittorio Ettore, owner of Bistro 5 has opened a new Restaurant in Winchester. A Tavola, literally translates to “at the table”, an expression used in Italy as a dinner calling to gather everyone around the table to enjoy delicious food, and each other. Born to be the more casual sister restaurant to Bistro 5, A Tavola will be serving an eclectic Italian menu featuring “Piattini”. These small plates will be used to showcase an array of charcuterie, artisan cheeses, fish and vegetables, to pair perfectly with an exclusively Italian wine list. Additionally Chef will be offering unique catering options.

We always wanted to try A Tavola and finally had a chance. We ordered a few of the small bites-piattini and were super excited about everything. Especially liked the very light eggplant puree and melt in your mouth prosciutto di Parma. We had a mixed appetizer platter as well, which is a great way to try different items. Very nice chickpea puree and ricotta. Also had Sformationo, a delicious parmigiano custard, not to miss, and duck prosciutto. The only problem we had was, that there is no room on the tiny talbles. They brought out everything at once and could barely fit the plates anywhere. Next time we will order in different courses! (Staff should recommend as well...) Also, that table in front of the bar is right in the middle of traffic, choose one along the walls if you can for more romance! The main courses were ok, we were more impressed with the appetizer section. The pumpkin gnocchi with rabbit was a bit on the heavy side, I would have appreciated something fresh with it. Rigatoni bolognese had a bit of an extra bite to it. Desserts are definitely worth saving room for! Delicious ganache cake and salted caramel ice cream, yum! We thought the cheese plate was too strong for a dessert, a personal preference. Plus it was a huge piece of cheese and a smaller different one. Hard to cut with a regular dinner knife as well. Overall we had a nice dinner and would come back again, maybe in the summer and just have a glass of wine and a whole bunch of appetizers!

A Tavola is a very small, farm-to-table restaurant. The menu is fairly small and I assume it changes frequently. The food and service were great. I don't believe they have a full bar, I think it's beer and wine only. Overall it was excellent and the food made for a unique dining experience. It's small and full, so maybe not the best place for a quiet romantic dinner, but definitely worth trying. It is the sister restaurant of Bistro 5 in Medford (same owner).

Their stated specialty of a whole roast pig deboned & put together as tiny bone in chop, homemade sausage & pork belly fat sounds like a good idea but appeared as small amount of meat for high cost---perhaps the labor cost was a factor…eggplant puree appetizer was tasty, though the big pieces of bare squid in tomato sauce was rubbery. Only 4 entree choices of rare tuna, the roasted pig, biftek, roast chicken. Pasta of rigatoni with bolognese sauce was just OK, nothing special. Desserts not appealing….We requested a business card from A Tavola and no one could find one…Does this mean they will not be in business that much longer? No 6:30 on Open Table so took 6:15, place was empty, 3 more tables only filled by time we left

Amazing food and aromas... all locally sourced... regular menu items would be specials anywhere else... specials are really unique and flavorful... we love to sit at the Chef's Counter and watch the kitchen... plus great service and staff. Definitely our "go to" restaurant when we need a fix of truly special and gourmet food... but in Winchester!

This is a lovely place to dine. Enjoy a small savory plate with good wine or a fine main dish. I order what I don't cook at home. The burrata salad with mushrooms was divine. It was followed with a rabbit dish beautifully prepared. Velvety chocolate dessert finished a fine special meal. We will return!

This bistro is a treasure in downtown Winchester. A group of five woman friends call ourselves the "A Tavola Club" for good reason. This place is a perfect choice for a paleo diet, and it also works well for vegetarians. Great oysters and other seafood. The house-smoked bluefish pate is to die for. You can take the option of just ordering off the appetizer list to make it a "Tappas" experience and get lots of variety. The Mafalde is a great main course option for vegetarians. The chef pays attention to presentation, and every day there are specials on the board. Waitresses are very friendly and accommodating. Prices are reasonable considering the quality of the food and dining experience.

Another great dining experience at A Tavola! The dining room was slightly warm when we first came in because of the open kitchen, but some time in the middle of dinner, the air kicked in. This restaurant is in my top 5 favorites, and it continues to do so. For appetizers, my husband & I shared squids & mussels, both were very good. Then I had pasta w/ various seafood which I enjoyed immensely! My husband decided to try pasta w/ braised rabbit. He loved it! He said it tasted better than chicken! I'll take his word for it. The wine list wasn't extensive, but I don't think you can go wrong with any of the bottles. Service was most excellent, as always. Thanks for another great dinner!

Great energy, attentive but not intrusive service and a menu that refreshes enough to make return visits interesting. Very tight space and could use some acoustic work because it does get loud when the place is hopping. After the early crowd comes through things get a little more relaxed after 8:30 although specials sell out quickly. A seat at the bar gives a ringside seat to the kitchen. Great Friday night wind down or Saturday special occasion place. Great find.

Classy place, although a bit dark. The food options were good however the main issue is that the 5 of us had 4 different dishes and 3 required more salt. If it was only one, that would be one thing, but for multiple to be lacking in flavor than that's a bigger problem. Overall, for what they charge, the food should have been better.

Pros: A Tavola is a exquisite restaurant. It's small, but this makes it warm (for me); rustic-type tables. I would find it very romantic, with low light, intimate. I do not remember having trouble with the noise levels. Service is good. Wine selections are good. But the best ever is the food! Every dish has a many layered taste, developing in your mouth like a blooming flower. All essences mix beautifully together. If you want a dinner with special, high quality food, A Tavola is the place to go. Cons: Be aware that it is a little bit pricey. This is not fit for young kids - I do not remember a kids menu (1st time I went, there was not, 2nd time I went without the kid). Not fit for big parties.

I had never been to A Tavola before and was pleasantly surprised! The food was delicious and their EVOO dessert is amazing! It is a very small restuarant and you do sit close to other tables so you almost feel as thought you're being watched and people are listening to your conversation but if you go on the later side the restaurant starts to clear out a bit. It is a great atmosphere and our waitress was great! I would definitely go back again, I had a lovely evening.

I would consider last night's dinner average though. The mussels were too small. The pasta dishes were both on the dry side. When I asked for a little extra dish of sauce, I was told there was an upcharge of $2.00. I believe that this dish was not meant to be swimming in bolognese sauce, however, it was too dry to eat as presented. I felt our waitress was average- she never came over during the meal to ask how things were, I had to seek her out. A different person dropped off the check and we never saw her again. The wine was very good- the Masi - I would highly recommend it. Although it was somewhat disappointing as I had treated a client to dinner, I would go back because I am hoping it was just an "off" night.

I had been to Chef Vittorio's, Bistro 5 MANY times since he opened with just eight tables. This was my first time going to A Tavola. I loved the more casual setting and still amazing menu and choices of wines. I love getting a few "small plates" for my dinner. The special was zucchini blossom, stuffed with herb ricotta, lightly fried with fresh basil and tomatoes. Then I wanted a combination of two of the different dishes, and the chef fixed something that was absolutely perfect. The Thinly Sliced Pig Roast was really delicate and came with a cranberry sauce/compote and pickled veggies ($7 - amazing). My friend got a homemade pasta for the main, which is always outstanding! Can't wait to try craft beer nights on Tuesdays. MUST GO!

We've been to A Tavola a few times and have always enjoyed it immensely. I've always had pasta, and did the same this time, but one DC had the steak, which was incredibly tasty. The rest of us had pasta--always a good choice. A nice feature is that pasta is available in half-portions, so it's possible to try two kinds at the same meal--great for those torn between options!

My wife and I went out on a much needed date night and thoroughly enjoyed our experience. The service and setting were great, but were certainly trumped by the food. We shares an antipasto for two and the appetizer sized cavatelli (with shaved rabbit). For an entree, my wife had the rigatoni which was delicious but she could not keep her fork away from my Porchetta. If you are foodie, you may find this dish to be outstanding!

I like this place. Have been a few times before. Food is pretty good. Nice wine and beer selection. Little too small, but it's a neighborhoody place. I just have one gripe and it's probably from watching too many "Restaurant Impossible" episodes. Some of the staff brought out our food with their thumb on our dinner plates and the water servers grabbed our glass at the top rim, making it undrinkable. Seems like some of the staff is untrained. It's nitpicky, I know, but I couldn't get it out of my head as we ate and tried to enjoy our anniversary dinner.

I had the craft beer taste menu which was very meat heavy for my usual tastes, but was delightful and a great pairing for the beer. Wonderful robust flavors. Dessert was a bit of a disappointment with overly bitter chocolate in the s'more (which really should be enjoyed fireside). I have dined here before and dine often at Bistro 5 and found the service, while very pleasant and accomodating, a bit sluggish. We had to ask several times for water, had to ask for break, the check was super slow in coming. It was busy for a Tuesday, but it's a small restaurant so they can't really overbook.

There was a wine list that I wasn't familiar with, but our server, a delightful woman, helped us select, and it was delicious. We've dined at sister restaurant Bistro 5, but this was our first time at A Tavola. The restaurant is cozy, if a little cramped. Looks like it might be fun to sit at the bar and watch the kitchen action. Amazing antipasto - best proscuitto parma, lovely pork with onion rhubarb compote, a great homemade ricotta with lemon zest, pureed chickpeas - rich and smoky (smoked paprika?) and olives. The special was veal flank steak paired with ramps, morels and fiddleheads - this was one of the best meals I've had in a while. A really good chianti classico on the wine list as well. The *only* slight issue was my husband's rigatoni bolognese - pasta a little too al dente/dense. We'll be back.

My husband and I went out for dinner at A Tavola for easy accessibility since we live in Winchester and were happily surprised with our experience. Our waiter was very attentive and made excellent food recommendations. I ordered the salmon which was fresh as well as the vegetables. My husband ordered steak and he as very pleased with his dinner. The wine selection was great as well. Overall, we liked the restaurant ambience, service and food. We will be back soon.

The homemade pasta and different piattinis were delicious... Most of us ordered soup and then a half portion of pasta with the piattinis on the side- great portion. We just thought for a menu that's set up in courses the service felt rushed and not explained well- meaning suggesting a wine pairing or try these things to start, then these later. The service was however very friendly, so again overall a great experience.
