A word from A Tavola
Farm to Table, Eclectic Italian
Chef Vittorio Ettore, owner of Bistro 5 has opened a new Restaurant in Winchester. A Tavola, literally translates to “at the table”, an expression used in Italy as a dinner calling to gather everyone around the table to enjoy delicious food, and each other. Born to be the more casual sister restaurant to Bistro 5, A Tavola will be serving an eclectic Italian menu featuring “Piattini”. These small plates will be used to showcase an array of charcuterie, artisan cheeses, fish and vegetables, to pair perfectly with an exclusively Italian wine list. Additionally Chef will be offering unique catering options.

Diner Reviews
  • "I would consider last night's dinner average though. The mussels were too small. The pasta dishes were both on the dry side. When I asked for a little extra dish of sauce, I was told there was an upcharge of $2.00. I believe that this dish was not meant to be swimming in bolognese sauce, however, it was too dry to eat as presented. I felt our waitress was average- she never came over during the meal to ask how things were, I had to seek her out. A different person dropped off the check and we never saw her again. The wine was very good- the Masi - I would highly recommend it. Although it was somewhat disappointing as I had treated a client to dinner, I would go back because I am hoping it was just an "off" night."

  • "I had been to Chef Vittorio's, Bistro 5 MANY times since he opened with just eight tables. This was my first time going to A Tavola. I loved the more casual setting and still amazing menu and choices of wines. I love getting a few "small plates" for my dinner. The special was zucchini blossom, stuffed with herb ricotta, lightly fried with fresh basil and tomatoes. Then I wanted a combination of two of the different dishes, and the chef fixed something that was absolutely perfect. The Thinly Sliced Pig Roast was really delicate and came with a cranberry sauce/compote and pickled veggies ($7 - amazing). My friend got a homemade pasta for the main, which is always outstanding! Can't wait to try craft beer nights on Tuesdays. MUST GO!"

  • "The roast suckling pig was world class. Service was prompt and professional but lacked warmth. The tables are very small with tripod bases that make finding a suitable place to put your legs and feet challenging."

  • "The food was tasty, the ambiance was cozy, and it is easy to get to (I came from NH). There is a nice little park nearby for after-dinner strolling, as well. Not much of a non-alcoholic beverage list. Parking was fairly easy."

  • "It was the first time we've tried this restaurant not far from our home. It's small and intimate. It was a week night and pretty quiet which was fine with us. The food was excellent. We shared stuffed crepes for an appetize and tried a couple of pasta dishes for our entrees. Everything was tasty and the portion size was good. They serve beer and wine. We would definitely return."

  • "We've been to A Tavola a few times and have always enjoyed it immensely. I've always had pasta, and did the same this time, but one DC had the steak, which was incredibly tasty. The rest of us had pasta--always a good choice. A nice feature is that pasta is available in half-portions, so it's possible to try two kinds at the same meal--great for those torn between options!"

  • "My wife and I went out on a much needed date night and thoroughly enjoyed our experience. The service and setting were great, but were certainly trumped by the food. We shares an antipasto for two and the appetizer sized cavatelli (with shaved rabbit). For an entree, my wife had the rigatoni which was delicious but she could not keep her fork away from my Porchetta. If you are foodie, you may find this dish to be outstanding!"

  • "I like this place. Have been a few times before. Food is pretty good. Nice wine and beer selection. Little too small, but it's a neighborhoody place. I just have one gripe and it's probably from watching too many "Restaurant Impossible" episodes. Some of the staff brought out our food with their thumb on our dinner plates and the water servers grabbed our glass at the top rim, making it undrinkable. Seems like some of the staff is untrained. It's nitpicky, I know, but I couldn't get it out of my head as we ate and tried to enjoy our anniversary dinner."

  • "I had the craft beer taste menu which was very meat heavy for my usual tastes, but was delightful and a great pairing for the beer. Wonderful robust flavors. Dessert was a bit of a disappointment with overly bitter chocolate in the s'more (which really should be enjoyed fireside). I have dined here before and dine often at Bistro 5 and found the service, while very pleasant and accomodating, a bit sluggish. We had to ask several times for water, had to ask for break, the check was super slow in coming. It was busy for a Tuesday, but it's a small restaurant so they can't really overbook."

  • "Had a great meal sitting at the "chef's table" Saturday night. It is remarkable to see how the cooks work together in a relatively small space! Food was excellent- antipasto for 2 had a good variety and was generously portioned. Pasta was very good- hard to choose among several options. Bistecca was perfectly cooked."

  • "Service was good; food was good but did not meet expectations.; small portions for the price; cramped seating. I would not recommend or return."

  • "My daughter and I just had a lovely dinner at A Tavola and really enjoyed ourselves. There was a wine list that I wasn't familiar with, but our server, a delightful woman, helped us select, and it was delicious. The home made bread was delicious with an infused olive oil, the chicken and salmon entrees were fantastic, the rhubarb meringue tart and salted caramel ice cream desserts and cappuccino were were a perfect end. Not a morsel was left on our plates, and we will be back soon!"

  • "We've dined at sister restaurant Bistro 5, but this was our first time at A Tavola. The restaurant is cozy, if a little cramped. Looks like it might be fun to sit at the bar and watch the kitchen action. Amazing antipasto - best proscuitto parma, lovely pork with onion rhubarb compote, a great homemade ricotta with lemon zest, pureed chickpeas - rich and smoky (smoked paprika?) and olives. The special was veal flank steak paired with ramps, morels and fiddleheads - this was one of the best meals I've had in a while. A really good chianti classico on the wine list as well. The *only* slight issue was my husband's rigatoni bolognese - pasta a little too al dente/dense. We'll be back."

  • "This small neighborhood restaurant offers excellent food, wine and beer. All of our dishes were outstanding including a scallops appetizer special, calamari antipasti, and porchetta entree. Chef Vittorio Ettore has created a very comfortable, cozy dining experience in Winchester. We look forward to coming back for a craft beer dinner in the future."

  • "My husband and I went out for dinner at A Tavola for easy accessibility since we live in Winchester and were happily surprised with our experience. Our waiter was very attentive and made excellent food recommendations. I ordered the salmon which was fresh as well as the vegetables. My husband ordered steak and he as very pleased with his dinner. The wine selection was great as well. Overall, we liked the restaurant ambience, service and food. We will be back soon."

  • "The homemade pasta and different piattinis were delicious... Most of us ordered soup and then a half portion of pasta with the piattinis on the side- great portion. We just thought for a menu that's set up in courses the service felt rushed and not explained well- meaning suggesting a wine pairing or try these things to start, then these later. The service was however very friendly, so again overall a great experience. "

  • "My wife and I, thanks to some kind friends who offered a combo babysit + playdate, escaped our three young children for a nice dinner out. We were looking for cozy and relaxed, and A Tavola turned out to be a good pick. The food, service and atmosphere was all very good, and everything we ate was of excellent quality. You pay for what you get though; I think my only knock would be that it suffers a bit from the usual price inflation that seems to be common in these upscale, suburban eateries"
    Dined on 5/17/2014
  • "We had a great meal but the price and atmosphere combined with a very overcrowded dinning area would take this off the list for going again. That said, the service was terrific and may be a better lunch place than a late day or eve dinner place."

  • "Love to sit at the bar and watch this expert team put fabulous meals together. Everything they make is great. I am gluten free and its the best pasta in town, including Boston. It's cozy and friendly atmosphere is ideal for dates and yet family friendly."

  • "Mother's Day Brunch. 4 adults, 2 children (ages 8 and 10). Food was very tasty but it took too long for the entrees to be served. Appetizers came without too much delay. Then we waited a long time for the entrees. Kids' menu did not offer an appetizer so they were ravenous by the time their meals were served. The bread was delicious, but we didn't want to fill up on it while we were waiting. We had to ask the waitress when our meals would be coming. She was apologetic. Prix Fix was 49.00 per person for 3 courses (app, entree, dessert), children 10.00 for entree+dessert, not including tax and gratuity. If not for the uncomfortably long delay to serve the entrees, I would have rated this restaurant higher. "

  • "A Tavola is our go-to local restaurant which always guarantees a fresh, cooked-to-order meal; a cozy, rustic ambiance; and attentive, friendly, and informed servers. As regulars, we have our menu faves, such as the rosemary pressed chicken with broccoli rabe and grilled polenta. We also enjoy many of the wonderfully fresh appetizers. We're very familiar with the menu and would love to see some new offerings, apart from the nightly specials, but we can always find something yummy, and it's great to check in periodically with our friends, too!"

  • "I had missed that Parson's Table was replaced by A Tavola, but after one visit, I can't be sad about the change. The decor is exactly the same--wonderful, welcoming wood with interesting details. The food is spectacular--I had the rabbit wrapped in bacon over goat cheese mashed potatoes and every bite was wonderful. Our service was generally good, although our server walked away without explaining the meats on our antipasto platter, both of which were marvelous. The desserts deserve a special mention, since they're rarely an Italian restaurant's strength--both of ours were inventive and delicious. I will definitely return next time I'm in Winchester--might even make a special trip!"

  • "This was our first visit (but not our last!) and we were very very happy with everything. The special prix fixe brunch menu was a bit light on vegetarian fare (one of our party is vegetarian) but the carnivores all said the lamb with fingerling potatoes was outstanding. In fact, everything we tried was outstanding. The open kitchen was busy but never hectic and presentation was impeccable. Great place for date night or girl's night out. "

  • "The food was unusual, tasty, and beautifully presented. The table was too narrow: everyone kept stepping on the feet of the person across from them. The waitstaff got one order wrong, and two others were not cooked as clearly ordered. Once corrected, the food was stellar."

  • "This was our second time at A Tavola and we were very impressed both times. The food is inventive and and the flavors are wonderful. The entree portions are substantial. I like the wine list and the "quartino" servings, and when I was trying to decide between two wines, let let me have a taste of each. We will be back."

  • "The food was excellent, a fun choice reflecting the chef's creative touches, not just a standard menu. It's not inexpensive, and not staged for a quick family dinner. Instead, it's an excellent choice for entertaining guests or a night out for two, not only for food, but conversation. Efficient and helpful, but unrushed service. Perfect when one wants a bistro-restaurant, not a loud sports-bar environment. The wine list reflects quality over a wide selection. A nice alternative in a town center, not requiring a trip into the city, or worse, to a suburban strip-mall. We will try their set-menu options on select evenings, since a la carte portions still make it difficult to manage a multi-course dinner from all parts of the menu. "

  • "Hostess & server friendly but not as polished as prices would suggest--had to ask 2xs for wine chiller, had to ask for water to be refilled, no follow-up on quality of dinner & ignored Open Table reference to birthday dinner celebration. Appetizers, especially spicy chickpea dip, were very good. Dinners--pasta was homemade and tasty--were delicious, though portions were on the small side."

  • "This restaurant was exactly what we wanted on a rainy night. The prix fixe was especially fine and the highlight was the wine pairings: 3 outstanding wine choices we would certainly not have found on our own. My choices off the menu were less successful, esp the rabbit and cocoa pasta (bland), but the EVOO cake with basil gelato was wonderful. There were many other interesting choices I saw around me that I would try on another occasion. The atmosphere was pleasant, the presentation very nice, and the overall experience excellent. It is small and a bit too noisy for intimate conversation, but a busy restaurant is always a good sign. We would be happy to return."

  • "We live nearby, and wanted to give something local a shot. I think it's safe to say we have found a place for a nicer evening out, without having to hike a distance! The food was outstanding, and the wine list was impressive. Couldn't afford to visit here often, but certainly wish we could. For the quality and size of the dishes you get, it is very reasonably priced. Try the Bistecca. They know how to do steak right."

  • "The Buccatini was very well presented. The pasta was home made, very firm, just on the right side of al dente. The dish itself was possibly a tiny bit salty. The appetizers were the sampler: eggplant. puree, pig roast and grilled squid. Very delicately put together. I am biased in favor of eggplant; this one was very nicely done, with its sweetness just offset by the pig roast. I had to think about what the squid was doing there, although it was excellent on it own. My partner had the Vongole al Forno. It was just right."

  • "The meals were wonderfully prepared. The pasta is consistently al dente with very fresh seafood and garnished well. The entree salmon was flaky with a crisp skin. The entree porchetta got tastier as you work to the center. The EVOO cake dessert was sweeter than I remembered, but balanced well with the basil gelatto. I have always loved the food whenever I go. Thank you for preparing such a great meal."

  • "A taste of rustic Italy in Winchester. This is true Italian food from the countryside. Forget about the Americanized chicken parm and spaghetti and meatballs. At A Tavola, you will eat like the Italians eat - flavorful, healthful and pleasing to the eye. The service here is outstanding and with about 10 tables, the ambience is romantic and cozy."

  • "You'd think a dish on the Restaurant Menu would be memorable enough to lure a new diner back. The bucatini dish was nice but lacked any zing. Disappointing, coming from a chef known for creative "wow" inducing dishes. Also, the beet salad special listed grapefruit as one of its ingredients but it was nowhere to be found. On the other hand, my dining companion's ribollita soup and ribbon pasta with pork (both specials) were excellent. Service was excellent."
