Diner Reviews
  • "We have never had a bad meal. It is consistently great. Good for groups and food sharing. Vegetarians will always have many choices that meat eaters are also happy to eat."

  • "The eggplant appetizer was excellent as was the tamgerine chicken. Great hot and sour soup and nice desserts to choose from. Will return."

  • "The food was excellent and the atmosphere was fun. The entries were very reasonably priced and the portions were definitely large enough for two, so we got a lot of tasty food for surprisingly low cost. However, our server was inattentive, and I dare say a little sassy. We saw him maybe 3 times throughout dinner, and it was mainly the bus staff and even other waiters that came and checked up on us and asked if we had everything we needed. However, we were overall well taken care of and very much enjoyed our dinner at A Single Pebble."

  • "If you find yourself in Burlington Vt and are in the mood for Chinese, this is the place to go! Not your run of the mill Americanized Chinese, this is the real deal. I had a Stoli raspberry Cosmo that was outstanding and I could have made a meal of the Dim Sum and Barbecue Spareribs appetizers. The ambiance is so nice you will just want to sit there and vegg out."

  • "SP remains among our top 3 favorite locations for dinner - definitely in Burlington and perhaps in Vermont. The regular menu is consistently superb (can't get enough double garlic eggplant, dry-fried beans, red oil chicken!) and the specials are every bit of that. Our recent experience with a fried oyster ap and a Cod dinner left had us oh-ing and ah-ing between bites. Service was prompt, professional, and not the least bit obsequious. Highly recommended!"

  • "My fiancé and I dined at A Single Pebble for our 6-year anniversary. We decided on 4 apps and 1 entree. Mock eel is to die for! The spare rib special was out of this world! We also had pork dumplings and Peking duck. Our entree was the lemon sesame shrimp. You cannot go wrong with anything on that menu! We had to take half of the food home but we had planned on having leftovers for lunch the next day (the gift that keeps on giving!). We even had the flour less chocolate torte for dessert and when I say it was rich I mean rich. They even put a candle on top for our anniversary! Amazing dinner, amazing service (thank you, Gayle!), you must eat here! We will be back again and again!"

  • "As always the food was delicious, the restaurant very busy. We waited awhile for service but once we got started, things worked out well."

  • "The food was very good. We had the tasting menu and overall it was strong. The emphasis was on meat and seafood with very little vegetables. Out of the eight five were very good, three were somewhat weak and predictable. The strange thing was the service. The servers seemed to be in an extreme hurry. I don't think they wanted to hurry us out of the restaurant since there were empty table, but it felt that way. The meal needs to be slowed down and the dishes need to come at a more reasonable pace. At one point we had four dishes on the table and we were still eating from the first dish. Most tasting menus I've had have a more leisurely pace."

  • "I would highly recommend Sunday dim sum for a great Sunday brunch and it's fun too!"

  • "We have dined here on numerous occasions and are never disappointed. It seems as if the shrimp and the beef dishes are struggling to be as great as the rest of the menu. In our opinion, the shrimp has preparation issues and the beef is the cuts they are using. This could just be our preference?? The vegetarian, pork etc dishes are among the best in Vermont! All apps are amazing as are the soups!! If you have not been here...GO!"

  • "Amazing setting with amazing food. Went with a group of four which was perfect. Because to the family style, everyone shares the food, having four people allowed us more variety of choices. While a nice romantic dinner for two would certainly work, the larger the group the better. Everything we tried was absolutely delicious, liken nothing I had ever eaten. The lesson in using chop sticks gave the experience a step up. Great time with great friends!"

  • "Dinner was so good that I still had a hankering for their food and went back for lunch the next day! We all had interesting, delicious dishes and brought home enough food for another meal. (You could say we over ordered a bit, but we knew it). The Chinese dumplings with chicken were so good!"

  • "I brought a wonderful friend for dinner to A Single Pebble. We had a drink and shared some soup, apps and a main dish. As ALWAYS, it was superb. This is one of my 2 favorite restaurants in the area. I come here for special occasions as it's a special place."

  • "Four of us ordered separate dishes, and a small dish. It was all delicious, and i am sad that I am now 6.5 hours away from the restaurant and cannot look forward to another meal there for a long time. We probably should have ordered 3 dishes and the small dish, as we were not able to eat all we ordered. Although we made a good try at it ! The service was perfect, I don't remember the name of our server, but the food came to us hot, the water glasses filled, the bill came and was handled at appropriate times."

  • "Four old friends were seated near back window, which made for privacy, but we were not neglected. Cozy spot for catching up on a cold February day. Space heater on floor appreciated. Table equipped with lazy-Susan in center for easy sharing. The special dishes and house specialties were unusual for us. We were pleased that the maitress de suggested we order only two jumbo shrimp dishes for 3 people, rather than one each, although the preparation (shrimps with Grand Marnier and walnut) was tasty. Good noodles. We liked the smoked pork in the house stew, which was a very very generous portion. Beautiful tea pot with hot oolong tea available from the moment we were seated."

  • "I think this is a venue for 4+ due the lazy Susan turntable on each table. The food and portions were good, the service OK, but 2 people seemed out of place, small. The ginger martini was excellent. I need to learn how to make them at home."

  • "I've been to A Single Pebble many times for dinner, which I highly recommend - the mock eel (actually mushrooms) is the most amazing food I've ever put in my mouth! Salty, crunchy, loaded with flavor - wow! First time for brunch, didn't know they do a traditional meal where they bring several small dishes to the table (dumplings, noodle dishes, vegetables) and you choose. The sesame-crusted shrimp packets were delicious, but the pork buns, in some incredible, flaky pastry, were like nothing I had tasted before. The pastry starts off crunchy, then just dissolves on your tongue. Impossible to describe, but worth a trip just for those. I wish I lived closer to Burlington!"

  • "Several dining areas, which made our table feel apart from a crowd. It was our first time here--we had an extremely helpful waitress, who took time to describe different ways to order from the menu, considering sizes of portions, favorites of customers. Our outstanding choices: Red Thai soup, dumpling sampler, Lemon Sesame Shrimp. We ordered the classic cold sesame noodles as an extra take-home. Super evening."

  • "Wonderful combination of spices and aromas. Recommend going with a group of people to sample a variety of delicious offerings."

  • "The food is good but quite pricey for a Chinese restaurant that does not stand out as a gourmet experience. We are regular visitors to Burlington and wanted to try A Single Pebble. I was somewhat disappointed, not so much in the absolute sense but because of higher expectations based on other restaurants in the area. If you're visiting and are looking to try some of the "top ten" in the area, I would pass on this one. I would suggest they get rid of the vinyl table cloths."

  • "I've been going here for years, and I have never had a meal here that was not completely enjoyable - for everyone! I used to be a strict vegetarian, and it was the only place that I could go with meat eaters where everyone would be equally very happy with the food. A great place to go with any group, because the food is meant to share. With so many delicious dishes on the menu, you'll want to try as many as possible. Nice atmosphere for a special occasion or a date."

  • "Bar none, one of the top 10 dining experiences we have EVER had! I have told anyone who will listen to me about the incredible food and excellent service we had! I can't wait to go back, I have no problem making the 2 hour trip just for this meal. If you don't know what to order, get the tasting menu!!!"

  • "I was pretty surprised to find a Chinese restaurant this good in Vermont! It was the best I've tasted outside of NYC or San Francisco. I also loved the family-style dining, where the dishes come out one at a time as they are ready. I live several hours a way, but might make a trip just to go eat here again."

  • "We have enjoyed A Single Pebble many times as a dinner restaurant, but this was our first dim sum experience there (My wife is a dim sum expert). We had a very enjoyable meal and our 4 year old had a great start to the Chinese new year. They offered a large variety of dishes and almost all were very well done with a few exceptional ones."

  • "We've been here before and the food was very good. This time we were very disappointed. We wanted the dumplings off of the Specials menu, but they were out so we ordered the vegetarian dumpling instead. These were pretty bland and the sauce was awful. We also ordered the Mock eel, which was good except terribly over salted. The Emperor's Beef was tasty, but it lacked very much beef, but a ton of mushrooms instead. Our waiter barely stopped by to check on us. We ended up stopping the bus boy to get another drink. The waiter put together a to go bag for us and said he would provide fresh rice. We never got any. Not sure we will be back. Maybe they were just having a off night."

  • "My girlfriend and me love asian cuisine, and we were really excited to go the Single Peeble for the second time in our lives this Saturday. To make a story short, my girlfriend had an allergic reaction to peanuts during the meal that was entirely our fault (we were warned and chose to take a chance since everything was OK the first time we been there). Event though the staff could have had the 'I told you so' attitude, they were extremely helpful and helped us in every possible way, they even took time to wrap everything left for me and offered us a gift certificate for a next time... I rarely seen such good service and attention paid to customers. I highly recommend the restaurant. And I almost forgot : the food is incredibly good! A MUST!"

  • "We live more than an hour away from Burlington and having dinner there is a special treat. My wife and I had been to A Single Pebble for dinner a year ago and found it to meet our expectations for interesting and high quality food in an nice atmosphere. We went to lunch this time and were disappointed. Perhaps it was what we ordered but with the exception of the radish cakes, a special for the day, the food was just mediocre. The soup, rice with meat dish, and the scallion cakes were warm not hot when brought to the table and that decreased the flavor. We will try the restaurant again and hope for a better experience."

  • "Great food, great service. Must try that sparkling sake again: light, not filling. Specials are always great talking points afterwards, because we always wait to hear what those are before ordering from the menu. There are some specific favorites we always order: mock eel and dry fried green beans."

  • "Food was very good. One of our best meals in Burlington. Ambiance was meh, like a typical Chinese restaurant. We were expecting there to be more people there considering how highly locals recommend this place, but there were only about 5 tables filled, unfortunately."

  • "This place specializes in authentic Asian food - not take out (though you will likely have leftovers. The food is exceptional - like no other place."

  • "The food was great; the flavors were nuanced and the plates came with Chinese greens. If you are looking for traditional dim sum this might not where you will find it; however, their modern interpretations of some dim sum classics was quite delicious. The dinner prices are pretty steep, so this would be more of a special occasion treat."

  • "We were here for lunch and ordered the tasting menu. This is the chefs choice of dishes to serve you. You pick meat or vegitarian and he decides what you get. Awesome way to try many different dishes. We were told could be 5 to 8 dishes. We had a soup and then shared 7 different plates plus we got desert. It was delicious and so affordable!! We had all of the specials that day but a couple different dishes. Can't wait to go back."

  • "I highly recommend the tasting menu. The chef chooses the dishes to send to your table. We spent two hours savoring eight dishes. Amazing."

  • "Our party felt we were watching a stage performance while listening to our waiter describe the mouth watering specials and menu items. Our water glasses were never empty and the staff was always one step ahead of our needs. We enjoyed the family style dining via lazy susan allowing us a chance to enjoy each entree as it was prepared to order - not being overwhelmed by having all 3 served at the same time. We could tell the chef and staff truly cared about what they were preparing for the guests. The scallops and shrimp were cooked perfectly. We all closed our eyes to enjoy the taste and smell of the first bite without distraction. I would recommend A Single Pebble to anyone looking for exceptional food and a caring staff."

  • "This is by far the best chinese food I've eaten in Vermont. We had the broccoli in garlic sauce small plate, some vegetable dumplings and the Buddha's sesame beef. It was all excellent and we had enough left over for lunch the next day. The ambiance is as good as any restaurant when it's full, but it was almost empty this time and I noticed that it's a little tired looking. Might be time for a remodel soon, but that wouldn't stop me going again for the excellent food."
