A La Turka, an Upper East Side restaurant that opened 17 years ago and is now booked every night, thanks to its great food, lively atmosphere and media attention. The restaurant has been featured on Channel 4, showing how to grill kebabs on the roof of Rockefeller Center, as well as how to make salt baked fish and on Fox5 where Dave Price has showcased its Saturday Night kebab buffet, belly dancers and live music.   • "There was one table left for 4 people and we were seated next to the windows in the corner. It was so cold for the entire evening with my back and side to the window that all I could think about was wrapping my coat around me and the long table cloth around my legs. The waiter asked ,"how is everything" and I replied " I am very cold. " He said,"there is nothing I can do about that". He also said that we could not stay past a certain time if we were ordering the special menu. I said , one hour was not enough to enjoy the meal. Reluctantly, he said well alright then.....enjoy! Go there when the weather is warm and you will be happy !"

  • "I've been here many times, and I'm hoping they were having a bad night. We arrive at 6:55 for my 7 pm reservation, only to find they had given my table away! They scrambled and sat us by 7. I order a French martini and the waiter has to find out if they have pineapple juice. We order our appetizers and the waiter says"I'll take your main course as well , I am ready" then rolls his eyes when we ask him to come back later. We order our entrees a little later and are informed that they are out of the stuffed chicken (amazing dish)! We tell him we need a few minutes, and he again rolls his eyes and walks away. The service was sub-par, and it was off-putting to not be able to order what we wanted, which is unacceptable for a 7pm reservation!"

Restaurant was less than half full when we entered for an early dinner reservation time, and yet we were put at table on top of the front door (which didn't stay closed properly; something to avoid on a night colder than this one.)   • "This restaurant is attractive, and the people are friendly and attentive. Service was prompt and capable. The food is another matter. The appetizers and salads were acceptable, but that is the most you can say for them. The bread was warm and much better than average - at least that. We ordered a lamb kebab, and there we were really disappointed. Some cuts were OK, not great. Other cubes were way too tough. And the side items were average - not very interesting. Dessert was well above average. Excellent chocolate cake, and excellent baklava. Overall, not too bad for the money, but not memorable. Doubt we will return."

  • "We went with a friend who recommended the restaurant, but admitted that -- at least that night - -was way below expectations. I ordered a favorite (eaten elsewhere) and it was prepared a bit differently (acceptable variation), but should have been hot and was only just warm. Service was polite, but inattentive and we had to wait a very long time after finishing our entrees before we were asked about coffee and desert. Although we didn't mind having time to our selves, this seemed unusual as the restaurant was rather busy. Other friends have also indicated this restaurant is at least "good", but no so on our visit."

  • "The Turkisk bread surely gave quite an impression on our party of 5 coming in from the cold, so hungry! We demolished ithe bread immediately that the owner came to check on our table & brought us a second loaf. This was a good gesture of hospitality that will make us come back. Over-all the food was good, the grilled lamb was a huge serving, the salads were fresh as we remember them on our visits to Turkey. The grilled calamari was so-so. I think grilled octopus would have been better but they did not serve them that evening. We enjoyed the rice pudding & almond pudding which we all shared. We had a quite table by the window, which was cozy & great for conversations. We also had very good service. We will come back."

  • "Great turkish food, roomey, vibrant restaurant. A great night out.. I would have given 5 stars, but I have one complaint. The live music is too loud. It was hard to talk at our table with the musicians trying to compete for acustic supremacy. If they could turn the sound level downa bit, this would be an amazing place to go out. (By the way, the music was really good!). I look forward to trying the place out again (hopefully they will read this review and bring the musicians' decibels down a knotch or two)."

  • "Love the food at A La Turka. Always start with the Choban salad with feta & a side of Cacik. I went with 4 friends and we had mixed grill, whole grilled branzini, Okra with chicken (yes, they will do the stewed okra dish with chicken) and grilled calamari. It was all wonderful and big surprise was a giant bread made just for our table - a very nice touch. I only wish they would have the grilled octopus (please..) more often. It is one of the best things I have ever eaten."

  • "I went to this place because I had a friend visiting who loves Turkish food, and we eat a lot of it back in London. I thought the food was good, but not notably so. The spicing was weak and it didn't leave me as satisfied as I hoped it would. I ordered chargilled trout, it was nicely done. My friend ordered the Kofte, the spicing was not as good as other Kofte I have had, though the meat was tender. The chargilled peppers were a highlight. We ordered rice pudding for dessert following a review recommendation, it was delicious. The restaurant was a little bit cold, and the music would stop and the server would put it back on after a 10 minute lull."

  • "I have eaten here for lunch several times, and it was peaceful, efficient and very delicious. However, dinner on a Friday night was sheer bedlam. The servers and others worked very hard but the service turned out very uneven. Food came flying out of the kitchen as if they couldn't wait for diners to leave! They will turn off interested customers if they don't get their timing down."
