Diner Reviews
  • "It was a special occasion, but unfortunately we were seated at a table that did not lend itself to conversation. The service and food were good, though, so in the end we made the best of the situation. It was a little surprising, though, when the bread was removed from the table about halfway through our meal -- no explanation, just taken away. With other "neighborhood gems" closer to us, we probably would not return."

  • "A wonderful surprise off the beaten (King Street) path in Alexandria. Everything from appetizers to dessert was served with attention to little details that added up to a big and pleasurable dining experience."

  • "Met friends at this restaurant for dinner. Was depending on the reviews since none of us had been before and we were anxious that we made the right choice. Boy did we ever! It was a great experience as we arrived at 5:30 for our Open Table reservation. We were promptly seated at a table of our choice (On a Sunday night!) and were served right away. Everyone was pleased with their food and commented so. Off the beaten path of King Street and close to riverfront park for a nice stroll before dinner. I would highly recommend this establishment!"

  • "Thoroughly enjoyed our entire experience at a La Lucia. The neighborhood setting is quaint and from the moment we walked in the door we were treated like family. The service was impeccable and the food equally impressive. We ordered the steamed mussels and double creamed mozzarella over beets for appetizers and they both were excellent. Main course included the salmon and the spinach/ricotta ravioli with cream sauce...again both were delicious. Topped it off with the pistachio gelato and our delectable evening was completed. Would definitely go back to try several other menu items plus the prices are very reasonable. Highly recommended!"

  • "Fresh ingredients, homemade pasta and breads, and traditional Italian entree's seasoned to perfection make A la Lucia an outstanding choice. Attentive service and great food make this neighborhood gem fine dining at a reasonable price. We highly recommend it whether you are looking for traditional Italian food or just need a great place to eat or take friends."

  • "With genuine northern Italian cuisine, separating it from Italian-America fare, A La Lucia is the closest one can get to a real neighborhood trattoria without the expense of going to Italy. I know; I lived in Italy for many years, and go back as often as I can. When I'm here, I simply can't resist the creative cuisine of the chef, the simple, understated ambiance, which is exactly what you get in Italy, and the owners' constant attention to the customers."

  • "Excellent food and good service. Clean restrooms. Experienced waiter. Accessible parking. Easy to make a reservation by the internet.""

  • "Our food was pretty good but not amazing. I enjoyed the bread and the salami antipasti plate with the goat cheese. I wished the meatball polenta antipasti was better but the meatballs weren't as flavorful as I liked. For my entree I ordered the homemade sausage ravioli with puttanesca and that was good. I really enjoyed the chocolate mousse for dessert."

  • "We met friends we haven't seen in several years. No one had been to A La Lucia, so we didn't know that it would be so wonderful. What a surprise--from the bread through dessert. Our waiter was an impeccable professional--we could have been in Europe. Every course was delicious and presented well. We will definitely be back soon."

  • "The food was good but unremarkable, the service was slow and not very smooth. I seem to remember having a much better experience at this restaurant in the past, perhaps it was just an off night, not what you want on a busy weekend! Would give it another try, however."

  • "Last weekend we ordered drinks which came promptly. Then ordered our entrees. They cam about 4 minutes later just after the waiter gave us break. When we go out to a fine restaurant, we want to have a leisurely, not slow, meal. A little over an hour seems right. We were out in 50 minutes. The waiter was pleasant and the food exceptional as usual. Order the chopped venison with winter vegetables over fettucine. Their mussels are some of the best in the city. SLOW DOWN"

  • "The bread is delicious and the Olive oil and bruschetta are a nice touch. The waitstaff is very accommodating. The wine is decent although I wish there were a larger selection by the glass"

  • "A la Lucia was much better this visit than the last time we were there. The food was good, service was very nice and we were able to carry on a conversation easily."

  • "We sat near the front window. It was an extremely cold night and there was a lot of draftiness by those gigantic windows. The food was mostly excellent, though they clearly cooked my scallops before they fried the zucchini. I will definitely be back, but probably not until it warms up!"

  • "We've never had a bad meal here. Staff is friendly & aims to please the customer. We were a group of 6 and each of us were very pleased with our food. Highly recommend."

  • "Our 3 course dinner lasted only an hour...with an expensive bottle of wine. No idea why they rushed us through when there didn't seem to be a wait when we left. Food was sub-par and overall the experience was disappointing. We won't be back."

  • "a la Lucia was recommended to y date and it was a Valentine's Day wonder. The waiter suggested a great wine. The salmon was delicious. The atmosphere was intimate and inviting. The staff gave us time to enjoy the meal - over 3 hours! HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend a la Lucia! The bartender was jovial and helpful wihle the area was really crowded."

  • "The decor is from another time. We we're put at a folding table in an extra room- uncomfortable. The waitress wasn't very warm. None of the food was good. Wouldn't go back!!"

  • "Coming from Boston, with phenomenal Italian restaurants, this is a gem, not usually found in northern Virginia. have eaten here many, many times - never disappointed with the food, staff and the experience! Three course special is never a compromise for choice like many other restaurants. With A LA Lucia, you get great food at a reasonable price."

  • "Went with friends for birthday celebration. Service was wonderful, food excellent. One of our party had been involved in a car accident before coming to the restaurant, and the waiter went out of his way to comfort her. Very pleasant experience."

  • "An excellent dinner. Period. On a busy night, the host kindly seated us at a quieter, corner table. The men and women who served us throughout the evening were cordial, direct, and professional, particularly with the wine service. Our dinner--three courses, prix fixe--was superb from start to finish. Fine salad, and well-cared for entrees. The wine list is excellent, with fine wines from Piemonte and Toscana at several levels, all fairly priced. The Dolcetto for this dinner was excellent. Grazie."

  • "Asked for a specific waiter, and they didn't even try to accommodate. Waitress acted as if she was put out to even serve us. When she was actually around, she really could care less to put on a good impression. Tried to push us out of the restaurant as quickly as possible. This was my second time there, and both times were pretty much the same. There is one really good waiter there (Emanuel), but if you don't get him, your experience may not be what you had hoped. It's a shame too because the food is good. I'm done going there."

  • "Everyone at our table ordered the 3 course meals and we really loved them. The calimari and the veal dishes were especially good. The only downside was trying to order a drink at the bar when our table wasn't ready- the bartender seemed disinterested and annoyed."

  • "My husband and I enjoyed our dinner…all 3 courses, starting with the appetizer. My husband had the mussels cooked in white wine sauce. I had the fried calamari. My husband had a salmon dish and I had the homemade black linguini w/seafood. For dessert, my husband had a cheese plate & I had a chocolate flan. Overall, we had a great meal and service!"

  • "Not a fine dining experience. Maybe it was because it was Restaurant Week -- the place was already packed at 6 pm on a Saturday evening, the only time we could get a reservation. To start with, in 2 hour period our waiter only visited our table 3 times -- to take drink orders, to take dinner orders, and to take dessert orders. It was on the third visit that I told him they had not brought out our side dishes -- if he had simply stopped by to check how our meal was after we received our entrees, I could have told him that. The food was fine, not great -- I liken it to upper scale café. With so many other great restaurants in Old Town, I'd be hard-pressed to recommend this one as a top tier."

  • "Was excited to go to A La Lucia for Restaurant Week. We walk by this place often on they way to the gym. Location is great for us. I had a decent negroni at the bar. The service was very good throughout. For dinner, I had the mussels which were fantastic, and then I had osso buco for an entre. It was pretty disappointing in reality. A short cut made it get lost in the polenta, which was a bit wet and over salted. The flavors hadn't really developed well, all running together, and the color showed as if everything had been cooked together for too long. Pretty unremarkable. My wife was happy with her burrata. The black linguine was pretty good, but not standout. Overall, doubt we'll be back for the price. Too many others in Alexandria."

  • "I was very excited to try A La Lucia. Unfortunately our experience was not reflective of this. First, although arriving a few minutes before our 7pm reservations, we weren't seated until 7:30. At the bar, the bartender took our drinks but ignore us the rest of the time. At the table, the server took our order and never once came back to see how we were doing. We were given the wrong food, had our utensils taken away after appetizers although we weren't finished with the meal, parts of the main course were cold, and the quality of the food was inconsistent. Some flavors were outstanding and showed great potential. I hope that this was a fluke and I will return again to give it another chance as everyone else's reviews have been great."
