Diner Reviews
  • "Great view of trendy Ocean Drive people watching. Food was great. Had escargot appetizer, lobster tails for main entree came with green beans and mashed potatoes. Great flavor."

  • "That was my first and last visit. The service was horrible and the food was just ok. I should have gone to Joe Stone Crab instead of wasting my time and money. I came from really far to try out this restaurant because it was a special occasion for me and my wife and it was a huge disappointment."

  • "What a find! Called on a Sat. nite to say running late, no problem. Sat us right away, greeted very quickly. Sheldon was our server, was fantastic, read the pace we wanted to move at, and timed everything perfectly. Had a wonderful Calamari for an app with a glass of prosecco followed by the most beautiful, tasty tuna we have had in a long time. Hate it when restaurants throw the term "sushi grade" around when it isn't. They threw the twrm and meant it!! Wonderful night! Thank you A Fish Called Avalon and Sheldon!!"

  • "Very nice restaurant. Great food. Friendly hostess. Attentive water boy & food runner. Mediocre waiter, who was impatient, spoke to me like a frat guy & literally took the check out of my hand as I was signing it."

  • "Loved the food, wine, view and there is nothing like sitting on Ocean Drive in an elegant setting watching the world go by! We will be back."

  • "Avalon usually provides an intimate and special atmosphere. However, during a recent dinner (reservations at 8 PM) the management crammed in families off of the beach without reservations creating a much difference experience. For those of us that make Avalon a must on every visit as the food is really outstanding (as it was this night as well), it was more than disappointing to have our night ruined so the Avalon could force walk ins off of the beach into small tables overlapping with customers who had spent time to prepare for an elegant evening. Not the night we had looked forward to for months."

  • "I celebrated my birthday at this restaurant. The highlight for me was the grilled octopus and the service."

  • "I very much enjoyed my experience at A Fish Called Avalon. Food was fantastic, portion sizes were very generous, and the staff was very helpful! It was a bit too chilly to eat outdoors so we were bummed to miss out on the South Beach flair and people watching from their patio. I hope to dine there again on my next SB trip."

  • "Wonderful experience. The food was great. The service was excellent. It is the best restaurant on the strip."

  • "Right on ocean ave, the Fish called Avalon is the best place to watch south beach walk, drive and saunter by, in full regalia. Food and service were great - don't be fooled if you walk by at 2:30 in the afternoon and the place is dead - it's transformed a few hours later."

  • "We enjoyed the dinner a lot. The seafood was tasty and the street hurly-burly was an exciting show!"

  • "From start to finish a truly great meal. Amazing food and very good service. The tuna appetizer is the best I've had. It was so good that I ordered a second one to eat with my dinner. The scallop appetizer was great also. Branzino fish special was light and delicious. Creme Brulee dessert was different than usual but very tasty. By far the best meal we had in South Beach."

  • "We travelled from the UK to Miami & considered several restaurants before booking 'Fish called Avalon' & from the reviews had great expectations - we were sadly disappointed - the oysters were flat, flabby, dry and tasteless, the signature dish of octopus was mediocre & nothing to write home about, the tuna tartare with kimchi was nice - thats all just nice, the carpaccio was soggy and over whelmed with grated parmesan, sprinkled with tasteless capers & garnished with an unnecessary pile of lambs lettuce, main lobster were dry tasteless & very sad looking, to end the meal we were served 'bought in' deserts - the service was excellent & the drinks were served promptly but for USD300 - for two persons it was a load of overpriced rubbish!"

  • "We returned to A Fish due to great memories of the food and atmo. The food didn't disappoint. The charred octopus and the buratta were exceptional starts, and the snapper and grouper great too. Solid, but expensive wine list. Service was outstanding. The view from the porch is over the mass parade of people streaming by, so good people watching."

  • "Avalon was fantastic. The server was very attentive and made sure we were always happy. Orlando did a fantastic job, the food was delicious. We had the Octopus for an appetizer and Lobster Tails/Shrimp For dinner. Overall this is a great place to eat."

  • "I picked this restaurant for the location and reviews read on trip advisor....looking for a special place to spend our 25th...willing to spend a little more than usual and it was completely worth it! The food is exquisitely prepared and beautifully served. My rice was lukewarm, although very tasty! They happily made a substitution for my husband's meal and served our main course as soon as it was ready....I dislike it when a meal sits in the back. It came so fast we had to wait for our wine, but it really didn't matter. My advise is to go slowly here and savor every bite!! Romantic, delicious evening (: Thank you for making our anniversary so special!"

  • "Wonderful dinner for two with attentive, non-rushed service in South Beach. Paella was cooked to perfection. A suitable wine list and cocktails made the evening most enjoyable."

  • "We enjoyed our first night in Miami eating dinner here. The food was quite tasty, we had risotto and grilled shrimp. I was surprised that they didnt use more local produce and that a lot of the seafood is sourced from elsewhere, however it was cooked well. The ambiance is definitely energetic, especially during March (spring break). The street is bustling with people and it seems to be one one of the classier joints along the strip. An overall nice experience."

  • "Great seafood options. Superb presentation and taste. We come every March when here for the Sony Tennis Open."

  • "Avalon has been a warm happy spot for my his and and I for over 15 yrs. we love it. In was able to introduce my sister to my fav spot. So fun and yummy!!!! Keep up the outstanding work."

  • "Red wine and the grilled octopus were both cold on arrival to the table. A little rushed considering the place was only half full."

  • "At least for us, after a week of dining all over South Beach, this restaurant had the highest quality of both food and service. Try to get a table on the porch away from the busy and noisy sidewalk scene. We could watch a parade of people and vintage cars cruise past which provided much entertainment but we still had our privacy. Our waiter was extra attentive and friendly. We started with fresh heirloom tomato salad with a tasty white balsamic vinaigrette followed by Crab Crusted Grouper with a Madeira bearer blanc sauce over giant white beans that added such a wonderful flavor to the fish. My husband commented the steak was one of the best he had ever had and he has eaten in some of the finest steak houses in the world. First class spot!"

  • "we had great expectations from this restaurant. over the years we heard great reviews and we where looking forward to enjoy a great meal. the crab cake was ok the asian -style calamari was ok. main entrees were a big flop . the crab-crusted grouper was tasteless .the crust did not taste like crab at all. really bad dish. desserts where ok to mediocre . the fact that the reception desk of the hotel is actually in the restaurant did not add a nice appeal to the place."

  • "A Fish Called Avalaon was wonderful. We sat outside and watched all the people walking by in South Beach. The food was unbelievably good. I highly recommend it."

  • "Food was good but they took to long to bring the food to the table, the bread was a little hard it felt old, but the ribeye stake that we ask was amazing. The only thing I didn't like was that the meat or fish that you ask does not come with any side, they charge everything separate, and that is not specifically the cheapest place ever. For the rest you will enjoy the view and a great food and good service."

  • "Well, we started going to Avalon a couple years ago when I moved into the area. We keep coming back for the food as well as the entertainment value of sitting on the terrace just far enough back that we can watch the procession on Ocean Drive without it disturbing our meal. The fish is fresh, and the preparations innovative and changing enough that we are never disappointed."

  • "I come here every time I am in Miami Beach. The restaurant is in the heart of South Beach and can be easily mistaken for one of the mediocre restaurants surrounding it, but the food is wonderful. I had the tuna and loved it ,but was also coveting my neighbor's warm lobster salad. My daughter had the filet mignon which was perfectly cooked. She also said that the creme brulee was the best she had ever had. The thing I like best about this restaurant is the consistency of the meals. It is hard to have a bad one here."

  • "Excellent fish restaurant . Good service. Ocean Drive can be a bit noisy"

  • "Good food and very nice location and view when sitting outside. Inside too much air-condition and not good. Outside live music by oine man band which u nfortunately plays too high for being during dinner, hard to talk which can't be the meaning. With lower noise level this is good!"

  • "Went there with my girlfriend for her birthday - got a great table outside, the food was amazing (except for the spinach risotto which was pretty bland), and our waiter, Angel, was extremely friendly and polite. He even brought us a free creme brulee dessert with a birthday candle in it - definitely not something I was expecting at a swanky spot like this. Would highly recommend if you like seafood and are looking for a cool spot in Miami Beach!"

  • "Every few years we go back to South Beach to celebrate our anniversary and each time we have dinner at A Fish Called Avalon. It has never failed to be anything other than fabulous. This year it was so great that we cancelled our reservations at another restaurant and went back to A Fish a second time. I had chicken (something I never order unless I'm in Paris) the first night. Great decision. My husband loved the snapper. The next night I went with the Branzino and he had the grouper. Delicious! A Fish may be the only restaurant on Ocean Drive that doesn't have someone standing out in front, waving a menu in your face, trying to lure you into the restaurant. They don't need to. Once you've eaten there, you'll need no "luring" to return."
