Diner Reviews
  • "Tasty food and friendly service made our recent dinner here a delight. Getting our server involved in our food and wine selections was a very good move. She knew the menu well and made some excellent suggestions. Overall, we had a great evening and will return soon."

  • "We were seated in a west facing booth late afternoon and blinded by sunlight every time the front door opened which was frequently. Spring onion soup was thick and undistinguished. Mussels were salty and too firm. Server was attentive and helpful."

  • "Beautiful place and great ambiance. We were so excited when we arrive but left Disappointed. Overpriced, terrible and rude service and food was just ok. We won't be back."

  • "My wife and I met here 7 years ago and have gone back every year to celebrate our first date. The food is great as always, but the service has really slipped. Drinks arrived habitually late. Servers brought food we didn't order. Our own food took rather long to arrive. But the worst thing was that the general manager was acting as host that night. He greeted us with a head nod and barely managed a "hey". He hung out with his friends at a table in the bar by the window doing a "wine tasting"--4 guys, 6 bottles. It must have been fun because he didn't pay attention to anything going on out on the floor. Honestly, it reminded me of a bad episode of "Bar Rescue". I'm glad I met my wife there, but we won't be back."

  • "The mussels with Pernod were great with the french fries. The lamb tagine with the flatbread were amazing and shouldn't be missed. I brought a party of 11 and you managed this group beautifully - thank you!"

  • "The food and service at this spot are very top notch. Our server offered to let us taste several wines she had recommended until we found the right one. I also highly recommend it for a date because the noise level is very comfortable. (You can actually hear your date!)"

  • "Friends of ours from Vancouver were visiting, one a master sommelier who teaches wine. She was absolutely wowed by the diversity of the wine list; said she wished her students could come for tastings. We had two bottles of red, one a Corsican one and one that had an earthy, almost mushroomy flavor that I loved, but can't remember the name of. Server was charming, attentive, and friendly. Food overall extremely good, especially the olives (every one a winner), the duck breast (pizza-style) flatbread and the ravioli. Only quibbles: - Fries overdone, almost burned, though still kind of soggy - Amount of cheese on cheese plate infinitesimal--hard cheese tiny 3 slivers and soft, about an inch square."

  • "My mom and step-dad were visiting from out of town, and a friend recommended A Cote. Since we just moved to Rockridge, we were very excited to try it and hoped it would become a special occasion spot for us. However, very early into our experience at the restaurant, I was disappointed to see the the two servers working with our table were clearly gossiping about my parents. My folks can be very particular and come off as rude. Believe me, I know it's hard not to take it personally. It was surprising to see the two servers looking at our table and rolling their eyes, commenting on my folks within ear-shot of us. It was disappointing, not to mention unprofessional. While the food and drinks were outstanding, I'm not sure we'll go back."

  • "I always like bringing friends here once a year to taste the yummy drinks but every time I'm more and more disappointed with the food. I mean… its OK but for the price? A small flatbread is $16 and burnt fries are $6. I think you get better value elsewhere."

  • "Always delicious food in the prettiest place to dine in the East Bay! I choose A Cote for all family celebrations."

  • "We have been eating here for years and always enjoy our evenings out at A Cote. We most often bring our own bottle of wine & the staff treats it with interest, decants if asked & gives us appropriate stemware. When we don't bring a bottle, the wine list is excellent as well as the cocktails and available hard & after dinner drinks. We have an established pattern, cheese plate, salad, followed by several dishes usually including a flat bread. We are still speaking wistfully of the confit flat bread we enjoyed during our last visit. The deserts are sometimes hit or miss. When it's one of those nights when we just feel like we need to get out, relax, have a great bottle of wine paired with really good food, A Cote immediately comes to mind."

  • "If you like natural wines, A Cote has you covered. This has become my favorite birthday spot because of their old world wine selection, coupled with a wood fire oven. Leave the kids at home if you have them, don't ruin everyone's dinning experience with your ill behaved children, this place is cozy and intimate."

  • "We were a group of 4 celebrating a birthday. Our waitress picked up on that from hearing our conversation and with dessert brought a candle for the birthday girl…without our asking for it. We thought that was great! We had fun choosing our dishes and loved every one of them. We especially enjoyed the duck flatbread and the Mahi Mahi. Service was done with cheerfulness, timely-ness, and helpfulness. I would so love to return to see what interesting dishes are on the menu then."

  • "A Cote is a unique little find, that includes an extensive wine list from wines around the work. For the evening we attended, our server accommodated us in picking a few smaller plates and a perfect bottle of Croatian wine that spoke to all of us at the dinner that evening. If only the menu would last longer than a few weeks, I'd love to be able to try all the different types of wines and specialty plates over time. The ever changing menu is perfect in its own way though - it provides a nice pick me up and catered approach to compliment the revolving wine and small plates selection."

  • "The food was interesting and of outstanding quality. There are both small plates and larger ones for sharing. The staff was good at timing food delivery so you could enjoy each dish without being overwhelmed. Had us taste a couple of wines before ordering a bottle. Good for small groups but is too small for large ones.."

  • "I have been to A Cote several times and the food is always very good. It is served family style and the service matches the family style as well. They have an eclectic bar so you can find just about anything your looking for. I recomend this resuraunt to all my friends."

  • "Great service, food pretty good. Too pretentious, overpriced. Don't order the grilled ham and cheese which was like a kids grilled ham and cheese sandwich for a high price for what you get. Seemed like most people were ordering the French fries. Guess I should have tried that. Review page should have a way to rate value, that's what really sucked here."

  • "A small plate (bigger than tapas) restaurant. Cosy atmosphere, too noisy. Spinach salad was ok, needed just a bit of salt, A hanger steak was wonderfully tender and savory accompanied by fresh white canelli type beans and spinach, quite enough for two to share. Ordered french fries (w/aioli, forgetable) which were very tasty, crisp , but a bit over done. To stay with meat we had a pork osso bucco (never had that before) that was succulent and delicious. The food was very tasty, I would return but on a slow nite. On Monday night 8pm, it was moderately crowded but still too loud , so on week ends it must be havock. We had a very good draft beer from Oakland. Wine R too $$$, IT IS possible to get a decent wine for under $40"

  • "This is one of my favorite Bay Area restaurants, hands down, and we've been going there for years. It always thrills with new choices and old favorites, a great bar and Belgian beer list, and friendly and knowledgeable servers. Atmosphere is jovial but usually not too horribly noisy. Sitting on the back patio in the colder months can be a little cold and drafty sometimes, but you can always ask the staff to crank up the heat."

  • "A Cote has an amazing wine list including fabulous choices for wine by the bottle. First time I have seen Lebanese Syrah on the West coast. Server was super knowledgeable about the wines and food."

  • "We had a great meal last night. We aked the waiter for his recommendation on the wine, as he chose the most expensive one, which was vey good but not worth $80. This was a bit surprising, as the $40 wine we usually get is very good. Also, our waiter took down our order wrongly and then charged us for the wrong order. We were too embarrassed to complain,as he was very nice."

  • "A very interesting and diverse menu and wine list. Our salads were ok, but I would have preferred more flavor to the salad dressings. Wine choices were very good. The mahi mahi dish was delicious. We ordered the pork loin dish and did not realize it was fried. Our server graciously offered us another entree, no questions asked. This is one of my favorite restaurants in the area. I've always had a good experience here and will give it another try next time I'm in town."

  • "We were there to celebrate our son's 28th birhday. The lights were very low, creating a cozy, comfortable environment. The food was all excellent, especially the butternut squash raviolis, the hanger steak, and the rabbit sausages, and were enough for the four of us. The prices were reasonable, and the service superb, attentive, yet non-intrusive. Will go again."

  • "While the food was good, it was pricey given the portion sizes. I would recommend a 25% price reduction if the portions remain as is. If this restaurant were in San Francisco, it would not survive at these prices/portion sizes given the competition."

  • "Two good friends and I had a wonderful time here. We shared two small plates and an entree between us. The food was wonderful and our server was able to zero in on wines which would appeal to our three individual palates. We spent a lot of time catching up but did not feel hurried (even though we did not order a lot of food). Our table was in an alcove so the noise was very manageable. On another night I met a friend for drinks and snacks at the bar, same great food and service. Highly recommend this restaurant."

  • "BF and I went here at 9 PM on a Wednesday to celebrate our romantic occasion. The food was EXCEPTIONAL! "Small plates" portion sizes allowed us to taste and share everything. Our server was attentive but not naggy at all - the perfect balance. While the dim lighting was pleasant, I have to admit that the ambiance isn't necessarily romantic. It was a little on the louder side, and the crowd was mostly 20- and 30-somethings in groups of 2-4. This place is much better suited for drinks and a light bite with a couple of girlfriends. We had a fantastic evening and paid $120 out the door (including tip). For drinks, dessert, and plenty of food to satisfy our large appetites, I think we certainly got our money's worth. I'll definitely come back!"

  • "My husband and I agonized over where to take my elderly, judgmental, picky mom for a birthday dinner. And she has a walker. And she is super sensitive to noise...etc., etc. I am so glad we settled on A Cote. We sat in the back "outside" room which was cozy and quiet. The food was a huge hit. They let her taste her first thought about wine, which she disliked, and the server suggested a rose which she loved. We had mussels; the duck pate; pommes frites; and two cheeses for dessert (with candied walnuts, Marcona almonds, etc.). Everything was great--her fave being the pate. She raved during and after the meal! Oh, and we enjoyed it very much, too. We had not been there in several years and now I can't think why!"

  • "Having been a regular diner for about 10 years (many times each year), my husband and I love A'cote. The food and the ambiance are great for a date. Quiet, romantic.....And we love the fact that the kitchen is open late. While the cocktails are also outstanding, recently they have become stingy on size. A martini glass filled to half of its vertical height translates to only about a quarter of a glass, if you understand physics. 2 sips and the entire drink disappears."

  • "We attended during Oakland restaurant week. The butternut raviolis were delicious as were the ricotta fritters. The onion soup had a tad too much cheese but tasty nonetheless. The tuna tartare and pork milanese were also great. We'll likely go back to try some of the other items on the menu."
