A word from A Cote

À Côté is a small-plates restaurant in Oakland's charming Rockridge district. Cozy tables surround large communal tables in both the main dining room and on the sunny patio to create a festive atmosphere. Small plates reflecting the best of seasonal Mediterranean cuisine are served family-style by a friendly and knowledgeable staff. Menu items are paired with a carefully chosen selection of over 40 wines by the glass as well as a highly diverse bottled wine menu. Specialty drinks featuring fresh fruits, rare botaniques and fine liqueurs are featured at the bar.

  • "I thoroughly enjoyed my first meal at A Coté. They were very flexible when we needed to move our reservation at the last minute. The wine list is full of unusual European wines, so it's a fun place to try something new. Small-ish plates were fine for 2 to share. We had 3 & dessert & it was plenty of food. Squash blossoms were lovely & different from the usual presentation. Flatbread with lobster mushrooms was decadent (drizzled with truffle oil). I'd definitely recommend & will visit again."

  • "I like the vibe at A Cote. The bar is pretty and very comfortable for dining, and the bartender was great. It is a small plate kind of place (which I like), and although most of our food was delicious, some dishes seemed like they were trying too hard - like the clams and sausage. I do recommend the cheese plate for dessert - fabulous!! At the end of the evening I felt like we had had a great time but that the cost was a little high."

  • "My husband and I have been eating at A Cote for a long time and consider it one of our favorite, if not very favorite, restaurants. The food is consistently terrific: their longtime signature dishes (pommes frites, mussels in Pernod, flatbreads, crogue monsieur) are still reliably delicious, and they always have seasonal specials that are creative and yummy. We had bacon wrapped salmon with fresh corn the other night that was perfectly cooked and a scrumptious ode to summer. A Cote is great for a romantic dinner for two, for larger parties, special occasions, or a casual meal at the bar. It's also kid friendly -- and our son has enjoyed it since about age 4. We're thrilled that A Cote still delivers. Great wine list, too!"

  • "Once again the good food, good service, and good environment of A Cote wowed us. We have been to this restaurant a few times and I must say that every time the experience is excellent and thoroughly enjoyable. I highly recommend to just focus on the small dishes OR order the larger ones with the purpose of sharing so that you can get a good array of all the excellent tastes. Do not skip on the mussels an the frites!"

  • "This is a warm, rustic venue with a very nice bar and a sheltered outdoor seating area in the back (no view, but it is 'outside' which can be pleasant on a summer night). The spirits list is impressive (rum is in) and the food blends comfort with creativity. A very tasty kale salad accompanied by superb oven-baked mussels hit the spot. The stuffed calamari was well executed (tender) but the filling was a bit bland. Desert was decadent. Returning any time with pleasure. (note: we rated it 'quiet', but we were outside and it was not crowded)."

  • "Been here many times, usually great. This time we were seated at a cramped table very close to a party of four boisterous, drunken people who talked so loudly that I actually got a headache. The server apologized that they were short-staffed, but we got ignored in the noise. I should have asked to be relocated, and didn't. This is usually a romantic, intimate spot: this time it was exhausting. The food was a bit hit and miss, too. Excellent soup and flatbread, mussels tasty but lukewarm and the salad and sides seemed unseasoned. I realize that the restaurant is at the mercy of customers too, but all in all it was so disappointing. I will go back, but what was my favorite table in my favorite spot is no longer. We were uncomfortable."

  • "We have been going to A Cote for at least 15 years. Last night they weren't on their game. The food was not very good, fries soggy and then when brought back after complaining were overcooked. The rest of the food was average and forgettable. The one highlight was the wine list with lots of wonderful wines by the glass from all over Europe. Will probably go back and give them another chance as we are hoping this was a one off...."

  • "What once was great is now mediocre. First after telling the server how I wanted my martini she told me they don't make them that way at Acote. What!? Service went down hill from there. I have been going to Acote for years but never again. Food was mediocre at best. The mussels and frites, their claim to fame, were awful. Flatbread was awful. I am so disappointed in what this place has become. If you want a restaurant that comes close, try Sidebar in Oakland, Lake Merritt. Someone needs to tell the emperor he has no clothes."

We could only sit there together for so long before we realized the small plates we had been continuously ordering had stopped coming for about 15 minutes. While the waiters didn't seem too concerned about it (frustrating!), it was more than long enough to become uncomfortable sitting in front of my clients/dinner guests while we stared at dirty, empty plates."

  • "We have eaten at ACote a few times in the past and have had a very good meal. This time it seemed everything was off. We had reservations and they put us in the way back room which had flies flying all around the table. We asked to be moved and it took them awhile to move us even though the restaurant was not even full yet. The Martini that was ordered came in a champagne glass instead of a Martini glass and the olives were just plopped in the glass with no scewers. The waitress told us they ran out of scewers. They also charged $2.00 more for a Martini then what was listed on the menu. I also felt the food wasn't as tasty as it had been in the past."

  • "I recently brought my parents to A Cote for dinner. It was an amazing experience. They seated us at a table in the back adjacent to the beautiful garden. We really enjoyed the fresh air and beautiful view of the garden. I really enjoyed the food, and despite the fact that they were "tapas" style dishes, they were very generous portions. I am a pescetarian and there were tons of options for me to choose from with fish and veggies. We all enjoyed the experience very much. The service was friendly and knowledgeable. The atmosphere of the restaurant was casual enough not to feel uptight and nice enough to feel special. We really enjoyed it and we will definitely be back!"

  • "I don't think I've ever had a bad time at A Coté. The food is consistently inventive and delicious. The wait staff is pleasant, attentive, and very knowledgable about the menu and wine list. The server heard us mention "birthday" and our desserts showed up with candles. This is why A Coté is always my first recommendation for people wanting to celebrate in the East Bay."

  • "The reviews of outstanding service is why I chose A Cote for my daughters 24th birthday dinner. The food was fine,nothing special and not hot enough. The fact that an employee propped the door open 3 different times on a very windy, cool evening at the exact same moment our food arrived,did not enhance the experience. Each time no one was around and I had to go close it myself. Our server was painfully inexperienced and for a place that boasts a wine list with the prices A Cote does, one would think there would be a sommelier on hand or at least a server trained to serve wine. Our server spilled some into the candle and never replaced the candle. Although I mentioned it was my daughters birthday when I reserved, nothing was offered or done."

  • "I've been to A Cote many times. My husband and I often come and sit at the bar because it is fun to watch the patrons. We often end up chatting with folks who are also having dinner at the bar. The format of small plates is great! This enables us to share several dishes. It is particularly enjoyable when you have a larger group. The flatbread is always excellent, as are the empanadas, salads and charcuterie plate. You really can't go wrong here. My husband often enjoys the wine flights. The service is very good and I love the ambience in the evening. Be sure to have a reservation if you don't plan to arrive at 5:15 to sit at the bar when it opens at 5:30."

The servers are knowledgeable about all menu items and provide wine pairing recommendations that will satisfy everyone from the neophyte to the adventurous connoisseur. While the wine list is exemplary, the cocktails also deserve recognition for being both innovative and well-balanced. Our most recent dining experience was the first time out on the patio, which is a gorgeous space. It is worth noting that it can get a little chilly on the patio, but the staff are very accommodating with turning on heaters and closing the awning over the space."

  • "For the first time in many years, A Cote played loud music. Very loud. The reason I go there so much is that you don't need to shout at your dinner companions. Last night was dreadful. We asked twice to have the music turned down, they didn't, and the server noted that this is oftne requested but they never turn it down. It's a shame. Always my go-to restaurant, but a twitch on the volume knob would keep it as the #1 place in terms of quality of food, service, and ambiance."

  • "I took some folks to A Cote for a business dinner recently since my husband and I just moved to the neighborhood. The service was wonderful and attentive. The wine recommendations were great. They seemed very proud of their collection. The flat-iron steak and the beignets at the end of the meal were my favorite parts. The olives were also very tasty. We were seated in the outdoor area, where it got a tad cold. But the heater helped. "

  • "Our meal was fantastic. We started with the calamari and artichoke salad and the duck pate, and let me tell you...I'll be returning just to have that calamari artichoke salad again. The calamari was so tender, plentiful, and the dressing was just amazing. It'd make a great lunch dish all by itself. We also got a variety of cheeses (buffalo, sheep and cow/sheep blend) which is always delicious. The fruit and candied nuts make for a great pairing. For a main dish we shared the scallops plate, which was also delicious. The scallops were perfectly cooked, which is the most essential part of getting a scallop dish right. We finished with Coupe a Cote - a perfect rich finish. Can't wait to go back! "

  • "I was a repeat diner and this was one of my very favorite places to eat but this last experience was very disappointing. 1hour between service of appetizers and dinner plates and the Waite had the audacity to say that it was because we asked them to spread out time plates would be served. Another server had a very snooty attitude. Just a really bad experience. Don't know if I'll return. "

  • "My girlfriend and I absolutely adore this restaurant and the intimate setting, great service and the great seafood options. I enjoy the oysters and quail ( which I tried here for the first time) while she loves the mussels because it comes with a sauce that's great for dipping the bread in.   • "Came here for a double date with my pregnant friend. The food was delicious, but definitely on the pricier size. The waiter said the food is meant to be shared, but with the plates being on the smaller side by the end of the night we weren't feeling full. I guess if you were willing to spend more money you could. Needless to say the food was delicious, but definitely come prepared to put a dent in your wallet. Of course we ordered the mussels and they were cooked to perfection."

  • "We've been to A Cote a few times and we always expect good food and good service. They always deliver great food and great service. The wine flights here are interesting, unusual and even educational. This time they featured wines from Croatia, Hungary and the Republic of Georgia. We had a couple of Hungarian reds that went well with our meal of shared small plates. Everything was tasty and served promptly and graciously. We had a carrot-parsnip soup, arugula salad, scallops and bucatini. Each item was beautifully presented and creatively prepared. The soup was very thick. The bucatini was served last which was a good thing. It's strong flavors would have drowned out the more subtle scallops. They just seem to know how to do things right."

Food and service were terrific, and the recommendations of our server were spot on. We knew the hostess,and she took the time to visit with us when she wasn't busy. All in all a great meal experience. It was a Sunday night and we closed the place down."

  • "Took my wife and father-in-law for an early dinner (earliest seating), as we needed to get to airport later. Not only was service superb, but food was delightful as well. The smaller plate sizes really allowed the table to order 5 separate dishes and share....making our choices easier, since we all got to try enticing things from the menu. I highly recommend the home-made pasta dishes, which were completely savory! My wife tried a new cocktail and didn't like it. Our server replaced it with something else at no charge. We greatly appreciated that gesture. While not inexpensive, you get what you pay for: ambience, service, excellent food choices and preparation. What's not to like! Kudos to A Cote."
