A word from a casa fox
a casa fox specializes in authentic Latin American cuisine inspired by Chef Melissa Fox's Nicaraguan mother. The food is served in a rustic setting in Manhattan's trendy Lower East Side with a crackling fire place and decorated throughout with family keepsakes.

Dishes range from tapas-style starters - empanadas and beef chimichurri skewers - as well as larger main dishes like braised short ribs with rice, beans and fried plantain chips.

Ask for a box of empanadas to go, store them in the freezer, then re-heat them for your next house party. Or ask us to cater your next special event, either at your place or at a casa fox, where we can accommodate up to 45 for dinner or 60 for cocktails.

Diner Reviews
  • "I loved the food and the restaurant had excellent atmosphere. Very relaxing place to eat even while the restaurant was hopping."

  • "Rustic & charming, a casa fox is a great place to meet friends for a drink or some yummy food. We shared tapas and then some mains - everything was delicious! The portabella empanada is a stand out. The service was friendly but leisurely (even though the restaurant was not crowded) but we were leisurely too so it was OK. Definitely going back!"

  • "I wandered into a casa fox late one night when I was starving and in the area. I couldn't be happier that I did. I have been back a number of times since then (I celebrated my birthday there last week) and the food never disappoints. The waitstaff is incredibly nice, as is the owner/chef Melissa, who will occasionally stop by the table to see how things are. The chorizo-stuffed, bacon-wrapped dates are probably the best thing I have ever tasted. By now I have ordered almost everything on the menu and I have yet to find something that isn't perfectly delicious."

  • "We actually made plans to go to a different restaurant for a friend's birthday dinner, but when we saw it had a "C" rating, we had to find another place. We found a casa fox on OpenTable and they graciously accommodated our group of eight at the last minute (and have an "A"!). The sangria (red and white) was great, and we opted for the chef's selection, as we were not a decisive group. They listened to our restrictions (a vegetarian, a non-red-meat-atarian, and a non-seafood-eater) and brought us a selection of tapas that had enough options for everyone. We would have ordered a second round, but we were all stuffed! Excellent service, good ambience, and the food was DELICIOUS - I'll definitely be back. "

  • "Terrible service, tiny portions and incredibly overpriced. Not to mention they don't honor opentable checks!!"

  • "Excellent, delicious....the food was great and the restaurant itself along with the fabulous staff added to the wonderful experience. Will certainly visit next trip up!"

  • "Love this restaurant. Definitely the best upscale Mexican food I've had in NYC. Many options that cater to a healthy eater. My favorite is the clay pot with shredded white meat chicken, black beans and vegetables which is truly fantastic. The bronzino fish is also amazing for an entree and the cojita (?sp) salad is fabulous! The place is very cute- napkins are bandanas, etc. and it is conveniently located for an evening out in LES, SoHo or the East Village. The waitress we've had twice is very attentive and knowledgable- one person with food allergies she made sure nothing had cheese and was very conscientious"

  • "Bloody & Mimosa were okay. Sangria is a must have. Food was fine. Was short on Chorizo in my brunch dish..."

  • "This was a fantastic neighborhood find for a group of my friends looking to eat some flavorful food in the Lower East Side before heading out for the night. The quality was really up there, and I will absolutely be bringing big groups back to this spot. We were a group of 10, yet staff was patient and attentive. We had seafood paella, carne asada, empanadas, and Malbec. Highly recommend all of the above. The seafood was delicious, the carne asada fell off the bone and melted in your mouth, and the chorizo and manchego empanadas were drool-worthy."

  • "We were there at 9:00 on a Saturday night and couldn't have a conversation because the restaurant was so loud. All the food was fine, but under seasoned. The wait staff was nice but seemed distracted and harried. We will not go back. "

  • "I used to live in the LES and visited Casa Fox frequently with just a few friends. The food is consistent and delicious, the picante sauce is always spicy, and the staff are really friendly. I booked this reservation for a group of 7 people and we had an awesome window table with a great server. Everyone was happy and full! I love Casa Fox. It will always be one of my favorites! "

  • "As a pescetarian, I am so in love with the mushroom empanada, mojito shrimp, garlic shrimp, seafood cazuela, and when they have it, the fish special with rice and encordito salad. Very special and authentic place. Drinks are excellent, and the vibe is relaxed and fun. Highly recommend particularly for a date or night out with friends."

  • "I would only go there for food. The sangria was like drinking fruit punch which was extremely disappointing for a spanish tapas restaurant. The wine by the glass was also not that special. On the other hand, the pork tacos were amazing and don't leave without ordering the RISOTTO CROQUETTES!!! They are heaven in your mouth!"

  • "A greate restaurant. Came here for valentines day with my wife and we both enjoyed it. The food was delicious. I am allergic to shrimp but the shrimp appetizer that was on the prix fix menu was so tempting I had to take a a little bite and I did. It was delicious. The rest of the dinner was just as great. The empanadas are off the hook, and the ceviche is too die for. I had the braised problem ribs and I was thoroughly satisfied. Drinks were on the strong side but is that really a complaint? Totally recommend. Place is small. Had trouble squeezing between tables to get to the bathroom but I made it. I am a normal build man. It has a nice fire place which adds to ambience. Met the chef you was very personable. Great experience."

  • "small place, with a great ambiance (loved the fireplace!). The empanadas were the best ever! Rest of the food...some of it we loved, some was nice. Just nice as a change, as the menu is so different."

  • "I went here for mine and my friend's birthday dinner. They were super accommodating since our group size kept changing. There were so many delicious drinks to keep us waiting for our friends and lots of great empanadas to keep us busy. I definitely recommend the dish in the clay pot! Great for a big group (but be sure to make a reservation because the space itself is small)."

  • "Despite many good reviews this place is terrible. Food was embarrassingly bad, service inattentive at best. Has the feel of a restaurant going out of business. There was no one there on a Thursday night at 9pm (that should have been warning enough). The server was half asleep and made us feel like we were distracting him from a nap. There was one guy in the kitchen and the food tasted a day old and reheated. Everything was sub-par."
    Dined on 11/21/2013
  • "First of all, the restaurant has tons of rustic charm, and the fireplace puts it over the top. Beyond that, though, the tapas menu makes it worth stopping in, and my wife and I will be back for more. I've had a lot of meat on skewers in my life, and rarely do they delight me. Usually fine, but not exciting. With that in mind, dear lord, do not miss the beef skewers. Do. Not. Miss. Mini empanadas were pretty good too. Good beef short ribs, also. Oh, and check out their house picante sauce."

  • "A Casa Fox was such a cute, cozy, delicious and fun experience. I booked a 9 person reservation for a Thursday night the night before and there were no problems. Though a tad pricey, the overall experience was great- the food, drinks, atmosphere and wait staff. "The Fox" cocktail is a MUST HAVE."

  • "I made a reservation here for my best friend's bachelorette party. We had a group of 8 and it worked out perfectly. The service was great and the chef sent out all of his favorite tapas, which we all shared family-style. I highly recommend A Casa Fox for a special occasion or foodies. The atmosphere was fun and energetic and the food and service was fantastic!"

  • "Outstanding tapas with lingering flavors that are truly unique. Easy access via the subway to Orchard St which has many small inviting restaurants. The ambiance and food at A Casa Fox was very much worth the trip down to the lower east side. I look forward to eating there the next time we are in NYC!"

  • "We have been to A Casa Fox several times with friends and as a couple and loved it. We took our five grandkids during their recent visit for an early dinner on a Saturday afternoon. Chef Melissa Fox served us and made the experience a delight for all of us. She explained tapas to the kids and which she thought each child would love. We had a blast sharing our choices! Everyone enjoyed the tapas choices and chatting with Chef Fox. The kids went back home and told their parents they had eaten at the best restaurant in NYC!"

  • "My wife and I have been to A Casa Fox before, and always tell our friends about the delicious tapas there. My personal favorites are the bacon-wrapped, chorizo-stuffed dates. I told some fellow burlesque fans about these, and we decided to grab a late dinner there after seeing a show on Houston Street. After the show ended, we came by and they accommodated us easily. Another couple of friends joined us later, and were welcomed easily, too. Everyone loved the margaritas and the tapas, the servers were attentive but not overly so, and we had a wonderful dinner. We're on the lower east side quite often and have tried many of the area's myriad dining options. A Casa Fox is a must-visit!"

  • "It is definitely a small space. i went with a group of 8 people and the seating was tight. It was however a beautifully decorated. Down from the photo's displayed on the wall to the personal menu's. The food was great being Nicaraguanse myself I was thrilled to find out that there was a restaurant that served some of its foods. I order the carne asada which was delicious along with a glass of sangria which was pretty good as well."

  • "My boyfriend and I have been to A Casa Fox multiple times, and it has always been consistently delicious and fun. We love the empanadas, garlic shrimp, and risotto croquettes in particular for apps. Last time, I had a branzino special that came with white rice and a refreshing cabbage salad you can also order as a side. It was light with great flavor. My boyfriend got the Carne asada (steak) clay pot and also loves the Costillas de cerdo (short ribs). Don't skip dessert - get the chocolate empanadas, and for drinks, The Fox, Hugo's Garden, or the Bo-licious (blood orange and mint w/ vodka!). The atmosphere is warm, authentic and great for a date or groups. Service is great, and the owner pays special attention to her customers."
