Diner Reviews
  • "Food was very good and had a unique presentation. Friendly service Sat outside which was nice although not the best of outside views. . Perhaps a little on the pricier side but not too unreasonable. Very convenient to any downtown activities"

  • "Wanted to celebrate my husband's new job, but ended up disappointed. Service was slow. It seemed like there was 1 server working with every table in the restaurant. Took a long time for drinks, waiting to order, etc. The only thing that came fast was our check. I ordered scallops which were chewy, and not evenly seared. Wouldn't expect this from a seafood restaurant. My husband had the sea bass, which had nice flavor. The manager was wandering around chatting with the servers, but did not seem to care about the guests. Will not be returning for that price."

  • "Attending a conference in Columbus and '89' was close to the event venue. Food and service was very good. Appreciated the option of being able to reserve online. They had a wonderful happy hour, but meals were a bit pricey. I would recommend the restaurant, and would entertain the idea of visiting again if I came across it in another city."

  • "Arrive at 7:30 for our reservation and were seated on time. That is the last thing that happened on time. Took two and a half hours to receive our meal. They were not slammed , but staff was totally over welled. Might add we were not singled out everyone appeared to have the same problem. Will not return. Appears to need new management."

  • "My husband and I dine out most Saturday nights frequenting the same restaurants. I saw advertising for 89 in several local publications. I'm so glad we tried it. We ate at the bar and enjoyed talking with the bartenders. The manager engaged us in conversation also. We had a great evening. This will stay on our rotations of favorites."

  • "I took my wife here for her 30th birthday and the staff was wonderful! They had flowers on the table and they even gave her a free dessert. The food was delicious and spot on how we liked it. Our server was great and we really enjoyed our experience!"

  • "We had the filet and crab cake and both of them had incredible flavor. We also had the salmon which was rich and mouth watering! We started with an 89 salad which hit the spot snd shared a bottle of Planet Oregon Pinot Noir. Everything was just perfect, including the valet service! Thank you!"

  • "I took my fiancee' to 89 for his birthday last Friday, it was our first experience at your fine restaraunt and it was perfection. We started with the Seared Scallops & Foie Gras, it was decadent and unforgettable.. a must have at 89. I had the hanger steak and he had the Sake Marinated Sea Bass. Both dishes were delicious, but that sea bass is something we will dream about. The fish was cooked perfectly, the shrimp dumplings added a whole other demention to the dish, and the broth made the whole thing pure heaven in a bowl. My steak was tender and perfectly cooked, the red eye gravy had just the right amount of kick. Paired with the polenta fries, it made for a perfect bite. The perfect ending to the perfect meal? 89 Chocolate Truffle Torte"

  • "The server was very nice and knowledgeable about the food. The place was nice and small. Was a little disappointed that the dress code was all over the place."

  • "Price of 89 Fish & Grill limits it to a special occasion only, dinner for two was $140. This included appetizer, salad, entree, dessert and two drinks per person. Waitress was very attentive and provided the best service we have experienced for some time in the arena district. If you have cruised before you will find the wine selection very limited. Seared scallops and salmon oscar were as advertised. I did appreciate being able to sample several draft selections before selecting Avery's White Rascal, a white Belgian. This was popular at the bar and pared well with the salmon. The brew is unfiltered and provides a unique look in the glass as well as taste. If you are tired of craft beers with the bitter after taste, this is for you."

  • "Seated promptly; great atmosphere; complimentary valet was welcome plus! Good wine/beer list; appetizers really good. Liked the crab cakes. PEI mussels sauce was a little too tangy for my taste. Entrees were outstanding! Group had sea bass, salmon oscar and trout. ALL were delicious and very nicely presented with assorted veggies, garlic mashed potatoes and roasted asparagus. Large group so we got to try a lot of dishes. No one was disappointed. Did not have room for desserts. A little 'pricey' but definitely worth it! Will be back for sure."

  • "My wife and I (mid to late sixties) and another couple (mid to late 40's) arrived in Columbus as first time visitors. We'd done some preliminary on-line restaurant searching, and chose this one based on its menu and pricing. It turned out to be right across the street from the hotel. More importantly, the food was perfect and very well prepared. The server was pleasant and attentive, but only in an inconspicuous way. Overall atmosphere was informally tasteful ( jeans and a sport shirt fine, but no tee shirts). The fish was light, delicate and free of the ultimate sin. It was NOT overcooked. It was chilly out, but there was a pit fire going, and we finished off a great first night in town with a brandy at fireside. Try it!"

  • "Good restaurant for fish and seafood, but not the best in town. The swordfish was half the thickness of swordfish I had a week earlier at a local fishmarket, while the crab cakes were good but we've had better. Nice downtown restaurant."

  • "We live downtown and love to try all the restaurants we didn't know about when we lived in the 'burbs. Although this restaurant is more in the convention area and we do have to drive to it, it was definitely a good experience. Parking was easy (complimentary valet though we found a meter right in front). Pear salad was outstanding, the 89 salad has the old 55 dressing for all us oldtimers. Both of us had scallops--excellent--risotto was equally good. Our server was friendly, helpful and efficient. Atmosphere is " cool", lots of energy in the restaurant and we very much enjoyed our evening. We will definitely return; don't understand why we had not heard of it before."

  • "Had a great meal, hidden gem. You can eat at the bar or get a table but the food was terrific"
    Dined on 3/19/2014
  • "We booked the table because of the large number of gluten free items - including a couple dessert items. Dinner was fabulous, and the restaurant was overwhelmed because of an event across the street at the convention center. We were seated promptly in any case, and the service was not too behind considering the number of people who were crowding into the bar area awaiting tables. Had a nice red wine from Predator, and a wonderful Tawny Port with dessert. We will definitely be returning!"

  • "Nice interior, great food. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed this we restaurant. We had a tough time choosing from the menu because several dishes looked really good."

  • "The food and ambience were OUTSTANDING! The complimentary valet parking alleviated the frustration of downtown parking. The server seemed like she was taking care of too many tables. We had to wait slightly longer than expected for her to periodically check in with us and to receive our check. She wasn't rude at all, but not as friendly as I would have liked. I'm looking forward to taking advantage of the patio seating once the temperatures warm up."

  • "We found 89 a few months ago and now it's one of our favorite spots in the downtown area. The food is delicious, prepared exactly the way we like it - fish is fresh and always great. Service is outstanding and it's a friendly place. Great place to go when you're in the arena district for an event. Would highly recommend!"

  • "This was our second time at the restaurant. The first time the food wasn't very good, but we were there on a busy night, so we wanted to try it again. We went for my birthday & while the food was good, the portions were on the small side for the price. We left there hungry even after dessert. I think it is over-priced, we left with having an appetizer, three meals and two desserts, no drinks and spent well over $100, and our choices weren't even the most expensive. The one up side was, the service was excellent. Our server was knowledgeable about the whole menu, answered questions and gave recommendations. Another up side was the free valet parking. The attendant was very helpful and friendly."

  • "The ambiance of the restaurant was energetic and happy, the brick walls and woodwork gave the place a comfortable feel. Free valet parking, good location. My Husband ordered 18 oysters and they were super delicious, fresh and quite large. I had shrimp cocktail as an app, 4 very size able shrimp. The Top gives you 5, I'm just saying. After reading reviews online, I ordered the sea bass. It was moist and delicious! My husband ordered a filet and it was average, not great, not terrible just OK. He should have ordered a fish dish. My recommendation would be to stick with seafood Ina fish joint. We will return or send our friend to try it but tell them not to order a steak. Our service was excellent."

  • "Had a group of 8 prior to a concert at Nationwide. The place was very busy and rightfully so. Great atmosphere, good drinks, great food. They set up a big table in bar area which was perfect for this early drinks and light food group we had."

  • "First time dining here, really a superior restaurant. Staff friendly and made great recommendations both at bar and table. Manager talked to us and other tables around, took our valet ticket outside so our car was already there when we came outside! Will be back and recommend."

  • "Thanks to Greg and the staff at 89 for a reliably great experience. We live in walking distance and think this place is Top Ten in Cbus, no question!! Special shoutout to the bartenders, esp Valerie and Adrian!"

  • "Everything about this restaurant was great. From the calimari appetizer to the Caesar salads unique presentation to the main course, everything was delicious. Our server was the best and really seemed interested in our experience."

  • "This was our second visit to 89. The first time was for lunch and soon after it opened. The food was only so-so and the service was terrible! We never judge a restaurant after one visit, so the dining certificate we had was just the right impetus to return for another try. Much improved in both categories - food and service. We also unexpectedly ran into a couple of friends and dined with them, making the evening even better."

  • "This was our second visit. My husband got a salad (with apples?) that he said was excellent. He also enjoyed the burger a lot. I ordered a 6 oz filet with a crabcake. The crabcake was a little too crispy on the outside. Not burnt but approaching it. It came with a dijon mustard type of sauce which I didn't like. The steak was cooked as ordered - medium rare. The texture was fine it just lacked flavor. It needed some kind of seasoning. I would mix each bite with the mashed potatoes, which, by the way, were very tasty. I had a pinot noir that was good. I enjoyed the cab much better (Bait & Hook label??). The service was very good. I really enjoy the ambience of the place. I just wished the food was as good."

  • "We chose 89 Fish and Grill for a belated Valentines Day dinner and really had a nice time..! Felt that both the food and the atmosphere were outstanding, and also many kudos to our server Adrian as he did an outstanding job.! We will be back for sure..!"

  • "Overall the food was great our server amazing. However my husbands steak was overcooked so it was sent back, it took way too long to get back. We didn't really get to eat together. I figured maybe they would comp his meal or offer a free dessert but got nothing except an apology. That was a little disappointing."

  • "I surprised my husband with an overnight getaway for his 60th birthday. I made reservations at 89 Fish and Grill as we had happened upon the restaurant several months ago during happy hour and enjoyed great appetizers and drinks. We had a wonderful experience from start to finish. The staff wished him happy birthday when we arrived and the service from John, our waiter, was excellent. He recommended a signature cocktail that was outstanding and later provided us with the recipe. The restaurant is of course known for their fish and our entree's were delicious and served nice and hot. The wild mushroom appetizer and spinach couscous salad were equally wonderful and we shared a tasty complimentary birthday dessert to end a memorable meal."
