A word from 83 1/2
83 ½ is best described as a labor of love. A love of a family, friends and most importantly, food. Owner Vincenzo Mangiafridda, a twenty-year restaurant veteran of the Upper East Side, wanted to open a restaurant that spoke to his deep Sicilian roots. In 83 1/2, his vision has become reality. Chef David Pereg has created a menu of memorable Italian dishes including silky pastas, inventive antipasti, and delicious entrees.
Above all, it’s Vincenzo’s love of people that makes 83 ½ what it is: a warm, welcoming place where friends and families share their passion for food and familiar faces. We can’t wait for your family to meet ours.

  • "My friend and I went to try this restaurant this Monday. We had the Lobster bisque and it was just amazing. As main course we had the milanese and the pappardelle. They both we outstanding. I was not my first time in an italian restaurant but I haven't tried such good food in a long while. A plus goes to the service, really attentive and nice. We will definitively be back!"

  • "Best described as a neighborhood gem. The pastas are delicious with sauces to rave over including the pesto which far from overpowering is most pleasant. We were dining with a vegetarian and this was a perfect option as there is a good choice of salads and veg based pasta entrees. Attractive price-point and inviting. If in the area do not be deterred by the construction on 2nd Ave as the restaurant is almost adjacent to 1st so with some planning easy access."

  • "What a fantastic experience! After a long day of walking throughout the city, we stopped at 83 1/2 for dinner. The meal was outstanding, the service was impeccable and the atmosphere was quiet and quaint. The restaurant is beautifully appointed. We really had a great time and the prices were excellent. My husband had the Orechiette with Broccoli Rabe and Pork Sausage special and he said it was one of the best pasta meals he has ever eaten. The food was steaming hot! My only request was that they offered something to drink that was not alcoholic or carbonated, i.e. iced tea. I don't drink alchohol nor do I drink soda, so I had to settle for water. Otherwise, outstanding. Would recommend it to anyone and will certainly go back."

  • "What a find! From the moment I walked in I felt welcome in this charming UES restaurant. The food was well executed and the portion sizes more than ample. My friend and I comfortably split the kale salad. Both our main courses duck and fish were delicious. The wine list was a bit limited but we were able to find what we wanted at a reasonable price. I ate at the chefs' bar and it has been an amazing experience..the chef guided me through the menu and the waiter helped me choose the perfect wine.   • "I've been at 83 1/2 for the first time last Saturday with my boyfriend and we both liked it very much! The food was amazing! We started by sharing a Cavolo Salad (very big portion, great taste, different from the usual salads) and Polipo (little spicy, fresh, very tasty). As main courses I tried the Pasta of the day, an Italian homemade Cavateli with salmon, cream and peas (the pasta was so fresh and the Burrata was very creamy) and my boyfriend had the Saltimbocca with truffled mashed potato (delicious, so tasty). As dessert we tried the chocolate mousse, such a big portion!! Overall, this place is terrific and the service was fast, helpful and kind. We will definitely come back!!"

My vegetarian tagliatelle was a little oily, but my boyfriend's bronzino was excellent. We had nutella creme brûlée for dessert which was good. The service was friendly, attentive and helpful. The food was just amazing; everything from the antipasti to the secondi is fresh and perfectly cooked. We had the caprese burrata, just superb, and the Pollo alla Milanese, the best I ever had. The restaurant seating arrangement was nothing out of the ordinary, in fact it was rather dull, Except...the hightop Bar seating area. If you have a chance to sit there, you will be right next to the Chef and view inside the kitchen- you will actually watch as he prepares your meal in front of you. Chef David was exceptionally helpful in selecting our dishes and was very friendly and knowledgeable, as he has created all the dishes that are on the menu. The food was exceptional and so was the service. Yes, it is still worth going if you can't sit at the kitchen viewing seating area, especially if your feeling unfriendly. Just check it out and support this neighborhood gem. "

  • "Dan was a fantastic waiter and made a memorable Mother's Day brunch for my mom. We ate inside with the doors open, but a small assortment of outdoor dining tables is available. The Prix Fixe brunch menu (for a decidedly younger crowd) could use some adjustment, as the drink specials weren't notable. Skip the booze and try the whole food menu! The crab gnocchi and fried mozzarella were table favorites."

  • "The UES is under construction, so you might miss it. But please don't. With its industrial/kitchen-chic decor, 83 1/2 doesn't look like your average trattoria, and it definitely isn't. Crusty bread with oil and sun-dried tomato puree. Chicken meatballs have a nutty texture, then melt in your mouth. Fresh garlic pesto pasta. Tender short ribs with grilled polenta (and the most elegant knife to cut them with). Nutella crème brulee. Serious portions on everything, and Italian takes on dancehall reggae and jazz in the background. Chef David and waiter Daniel do it up in style, and you can even see the cooking from some of the seats. Lotsa competition in the area, but this one's special."

The chef came out to ask if we enjoyed our food, and genuinely seemed to care. The service was excellent. I recommend this venu. They just started brunch, and am looking forward to checking that out. I was trying to be mindful of eating sparingly, but I ate everything on my plate it was so good (Pollo Milanese). My sister had the special cannelloni with duck and ricotta and the kale, apple and avocado salad to start. I can't wait to go back. Sit at the kitchen bar if you can..."

That's the only criticism ..as food, service and ambience was great."

The grilled vegetables with goat cheese , the branzino with vegetables & the fish special were all tasty, the ground lamb pasta, not so good. The tiramisu was plentiful but very UNflavorful - it needed some coffee, at the least, splashed over it to kick it up a notch. With a groupon discount, a good, serviceable meal."
