Diner Reviews
  • "Went last Thursday at 6. About 10% occupied. 20% by the time we left. Was surprised because it is the best for seafood. Everything was perfect. Don't usually get a dessert but shared a "lemon square" dish….it was fabulous and not what you think."

  • "We absolutely love everything about this restaurant, so we celebrated our wedding anniversary here. Our server made us feel so special on our special day with confetti on the table, and a beautiful bottle of wine. We had the octopus to start, which was amazing. My wife had the buttered lobster which was gorgeous. And I had the scallops, I have had them before and I will have them again. Wonderful."

  • "Great dinner. Difficult decisions to select the meal because it all looked so good. And the resulting selections tasted great."

  • "Went to celebrate a colleague's accomplishments. Table was decorated with cute confetti of stars and champagne bottles, so thoughtful. Service was incredible and food excellent. We all had fish, I had seared ahi, excellent. They had some unusual offerings like blue ahi. Tried a side dish of foie gras gnocchi, unusual and very good. Will go again for a special occasion."

  • "801 Fish is the single best restaurant in Kansas City! The quality and selection of seafood is without compare. The service staff is well informed and attentive in every way. Also, the wine list is extraordinary--it is diverse and deep. This Park Place gem deserves every serious diner's attention."

  • "Great seafood. Great service. Ask for Matthew, he is the best. ;)"

  • "The staff was overwhelmingly amazing and went so far above and beyond the call of duty, it's hard to describe. And that's even before the food came out. The chefs are genius. Every flavor and pairing were expertly executed."

  • "My wife and I tried 801 Fish a few days ago and were very pleased. The staff was great from the moment we walked into the doorway. The decor was bright and perfect for a Seafood restaurant. The bartender came over to check if my drink was the way I wanted (and it was), our waiter pointed us to several great items and he was spot on. We will come back again and may make it one of our favorites in the KC area. Thank you for a great time"

  • "Our first visit. Sparse crowd on a Tuesday night. Excellent menu, and very good food. They also comped a dessert when I gave a slightly critical opinion of my entrée. They are trying hard. The principal downside all related to alcohol, specifically its pricing -- my relative small pour of a Belvedere-on-the-rocks cost $15. Ridiculous. And while the wine-by-the-glass offerings were both broad and well-priced, 80% of all bottles were $60 and up."

  • "The service was excellent and the fish (halibut and sea bass) was very good. The pricing is quite expensive. Not a weekly place to dine."

  • "I love the look of this restaurant and the overall concept to compliment the 801 Chophouse however our server was not very good at all. It was not that busy on a Sunday night. He seemed bipolar and a little rude to us as we were ordering. Then we would check on us and seem friendly... he would return and become rude again. It detracted from our dining experience."

  • "Incredible restaurant, amazing food and outstanding service! I would recommend this restaurant to everyone I know and look forward to returning again in the near future. "

  • "We recently dined at 801 Fish with friends for our 25th Wedding Anniversary. Although the table was sprinkled with confetti hearts it was disappointing that the restaurant did not make any other efforts to make our experience memorable. The waiter was fine, but seem to only suggest that "his favorites" just so happened to be the most expensive items on the menu. We were shocked by the amount of the tab at the end of our evening. A bottle of mediocre wine (retails at $25) was sold to us for $90. (Our mistake by not double checking on the price.) The food was excellent, but won't be back any time soon as it was a $600.00 tab for our evening!"

  • "They treated me wonderfully for my birthday! The menu selection is small for entrees, it was very expensive for what you got and I'm not sure I'll be back. There are plenty of fish restaurants in KC that the price is more in line with reality (unless you're on an expense account or don't care about cost). The food was good, but for the price, I wanted an amazing meal. This wasn't it."

  • "My first experience at 801 Fish exceeded my expectations. I had heard the seafood was great, I found out after the experience that the seafood is outstanding. Our waiter was especially helpful with our order and left us feeling like we had just made a new friendship. I will DEFINITELY return to 801 Fish and hopefully we will be able to request our same waiter. Don't miss this place folks!"

  • "This was our first time at the restaurant and overall we had a great night. Yes, it is very pricey, but you can absolutely taste the freshness of the fish. The space is well designed with some fun touches. The Crudo was the high point of the night. A perfect, balanced bite of fish with imaginative accompaniments. The rest of the meal was generally well prepared with one glaring exception that was quickly remedied. The wine by the glass list had some nice selections and both of our desserts (soufflé and panna cotta) were a lovely end to the meal. Our server was attentive and pleasant. We will be back."

  • "This was our 3rd time at 801 Fish and it still surprises us. The menu changes with the availability of fresh fresh and is always prepared wonderfully. The favorites remain on the menu, which is great to see, but fun to try new things as well. Love sitting at the "chef's table", which is really a bar overlooking the cooking area. Service is over the top amazing, and all servers are attentive and have actually eaten the food served and have opinions and not afraid to share :) Love it and will keep going back."

  • "My wife and I chose 801 Fish to celebrate our 26th anniversary. I had noted that when I made reservations many of the staff were kind enough to stop by and wish us their best. Our waiter was very attentive but started out by telling us that white wine was usually best with seafood, caviar is fish eggs, etc.... like we had never dined out before. No biggie. The wine list was voluminous, the food was very, very good, a great chocolate soufflé was complementary to help us celebrate.....but. It is just not our type of place. It is what I call an expense account restaurant where people who can expense their meals dine. Or, more like a hotel restaurant. We enjoyed our experience there but most probably won't be back. "

  • "Recently ate for 5th anniversary here and had a pretty below average experience. The restaurant is about as pricey as anything in Kansas City, which is ok because that was expected but there is nothing about the restaurant that validates having top shelf pricing. The food is fresh, but I personally couldn't tell a huge much difference between the dishes here vs. other local high end restaurants. The Cioppino was the best dish I tried this evening, very flavorful. The Hawaii Ahi Tuna was a very small portion and not especially well prepared. The lobster was good, but definitely not any better then places like Capital Grille. Drinks were pretty watered down and poured very light which upsets me when your paying $15 for alcohol. "

  • "No seafood restaurant in town comes close to eating at 801 Fish. The food is fresh and creative. Service is exceptional. Ask for Bennet's section. "

  • "The service was excellent as was the food. The noise level was low - but then again we dined during the middle of the week and I can see how it would be much louder if filled to capacity."

  • "Excellent food, presentation, and service. Take advantage of the $1 oysters from 4-6PM. They have the freshest fish in Kansas City without exception! Taste it and compare it to the Bristol and M&S and you will see there is NO comparison. I'll give two reasons for the four stars instead of five. First, the place is very expensive (I guess you have to pay for the freshness). Next, there were only four or five tables seated on Monday night. They wouldn't consider serving us the $1 oysters at our table, so we left our table to go to the oyster bar and returned to our table for dinner. Maybe I'm just picky, but that seemed odd. Will has waited on us twice and he is exceptional. Cheers!"

  • "I would say this restaurant has very good food, great atmosphere, and excellent service. Just way too pricey for what you get. It is good fish but there are several other restaurants nearby that offer as good of quality as here, but for far less. That is the only negative is the price. Probably won't be back. Too bad."

  • "We enjoyed a wonderful experience for Mother's Day with 3 generations of our family. The entire experience was excellent, and we highly recommend this restaurant for a special occasion. Everything we ordered was delicious, and the staff was very, very attentitive. Our evening was a delight! "

  • "We arrived on time for our reservation and were seated immediately. Décor was pleasant and the noise level noticeable but not bothersome. Like I said at first, great fish. Monchong, poached lobster and halibut were superb. Well prepared, seasoned and cooked perfectly. The wine list was reasonable. The waiter was very knowledgeable and friendly. My reason for not giving 5 stars for the food was the puzzling choice of sides served with our entree's. Some of them just didn't work. Radishes and cauliflower against the flavors of the seafood did not play out well. A pile of mashed potatoes were no help either. Check out the online menu for a preview and pricing."

  • "Our first visit to 801 Fish was amazing and perhaps our expectations were too high this time. Oysters Rockefeller were absolutely incredible, but the morel mushrooms were not good. I recently had skate wing at Aixois and it was fabulous, but I didn't care for the way it was prepared at 801. My husband's grouper was very good - the drinks and wine were great, too."

  • "This has become a regular place for us on our restaurant rotation. The food and service is always spot on! We love the fact that the menu changes frequently so there's always a surprise and a new dish to try out."

  • "This was my second time at 801 Fish and wanted to like it. I love fresh seafood and it seemed like a place I could just thoroughly enjoy. Both times our service was somewhat pretentious. I felt like the restaurant was trying to be something that just doesn't fit where we live. The fresh seafood was great and it was really fun to try different oysters and get a sense for the differences in each. I did also love the Caesar salad as it was unique with the added egg. Beyond that I really wasn't impressed with anything else. My crab cocktail was drowning in cocktail sauce and my boyfriend didn't enjoy his dinner. Given the prices, I had expected more. We have been big fans of the Bristol for years and will continue to enjoy it. "

  • "We had a great time picking through the menu and sampled nearly all our favorites. The service was excellent and the waiter remembered everything we wanted without writing it down! The braised octopus was the best I've had--coupled with fried brussel sprouts was a taste treat. We had the cold plate and one suggestion is to have melted butter to go with the lobster and crab. Overall pleasant dining and great food."

  • "Our first visit to 801 Fish was for our daughters 18th birthday party. It was a complete success from the confetti on the table to delicious meal and flawless service. We will definitely be back. It was an expensive evening but well worth it. We enjoyed everything from the grilled caesar salad, the oysters, the grouper and even the steak was done perfectly. The brussel sprouts as a side are a must for anyone dining there. Try to save a little room for the desserts as well, they will not disappoint!"

  • "Great variety and preparation of all things from the sea. The oysters were varied, truly fresh and from both coasts. Ceviche was appropriately fresh and tart. The roasted fish, whole branzino, whole black bass, were both crispy delicious on the outside and beautifully boned and tender on the inside. Excellent linguine with white clam sauce - garlicky and essence of the sea. The substantial seafood portions came with adequate and delicious sides. There are more sides if you want them. Creamed spinach with black truffles was wonderful. The wine list was awesome and had some bargains. Finally really creative deserts. Beautiful setting too. Not cheap, but worth it!! "

  • "This is a new place in Leawood. My wife and I have frequented 801 Chophouse in the past. Steve Aubuchon was our favorite waiter at 801 Chop (probably the best waiter we have had at ANY restaurant). Steve is now the GM at 801 Fish and brings an extremely high level of perfection to the service experience and food offerings at this new establishment. Seafood is flown in daily - some of which comes off day-boats! Unusual for the middle of the country. Try the Halibut - superb. "

  • "Hands down, this is our favorite go-to restaurant for seafood. Always great service and every dish is prepared to perfection. And we love how the menu changes often so that we have the opportunity to try something new."

  • "Semi private room was excellent and food and service as well. Will be back."
    Dined on 4/25/2014
  • "Service was amazing they took care of me even though I didn't care for what I ordered. Next time I would just order crab legs. However the beet salad was really good. Lobster bisque needs the lobster chopped up in the soup not one big chunk. Lobster Mac way to dry. "
    Dined on 4/24/2014
  • "Honestly, it is way overpriced for what you get. It is a nice restaurant and the seafood is decent there. However, the seafood options are limited. The lobster bisque doesn't really have lobster in it. It is not on the level of other high end seafood restaurants in the area. And to top it all off, my drinks were outrageously expensive!! A glass of Blanton's was $23 a pour. At other high end restaurants, the same drink costs anywhere from $12-$16. We went to Pig and Finch for cocktails afterwards (which is owned by 801), and a glass of Blanton's there was $14. In summary, your prices are too high, your food is limited, and I can cook better seafood at home. I doubt we will be back. "

  • "Our second trip 801 Fish. It is the best seafood restaurant in the Midwest. It is very expensive but the quality of food makes it worth the investment. The only downside was that the service is mediocre. The server did everything he was supposed to but added nothing to the experience."
    Dined on 4/18/2014
  • "I am used to fine dining...but this is a little over the top. Portions are small and very pricey. The beet salad is to die for! Halibut was only OK especially for the $46 price tag. Not sure if we would return if we were paying for our own meal versus being on an expense account."
