Diner Reviews
  • "Invited out of town guests to 80 Thoreau. We all had a great meal experience. Chicken, pork, salmon were all cooked perfectly. Service was attentive."

  • "Great local restaurant. Not easy to get into - always quite full. This time we sat nearer to the bar, it was after 8:30pm and it was a bit on the loud side but the food and service as always was excellent."

  • "Another tasty evening at 80. The soft shell crab was pertfectly prepared and the mains (stripee bass and veal) were delicious. Service and wine selection were also unparalled. A salute to all on this team!"

  • "I'd been to 80 Thoreau for drinks and appetizers before and it was wonderful. I couldn't wait to have dinner there, and my expectations were exceeded. From cocktails to appetizers to entrees to dessert, every dish was excellent. The service was truly outstanding. On a Wednesday night, the place was nearly full. Yet each and every staff member made us feel as if we were their only and highest priority."

  • "I've eaten at 80 Thoreau twice. Excellent starters and entres! Our party of 4 enjoyed bass, sea scallops, and salmon dishes. The sauce with the bass was exceptional. Finally Concord has a fine restaurant that is high quality, has very good service, but is not pretentious."

  • "I took clients of mine to dinner to celebrate their first purchase of a home. We sat in the back with the view of the train which was fun. Our waiter was exceptional. He suggested cocktails based on what we liked. Our starters were excellent I got the gnocchi. The grilled veal was amazing. And our desserts were wonderful. This is clearly fine dining without having to get dressed up. This was my second visit and look forward to going back soon."

  • "My friends and I loved the restaurant, service and the food. We eat out often at fine restaurants in Boston and this is one of our favorites now. Everything we ordered from apps to dessert was an artistic creation with a mix of wonderful flavors that melted together beautifully. Food was fabulous. Service was great-efficient and happy. We were able to converse. It was very relaxing."

  • "I moved from Cambridge to Concord last month and have now enjoyed 80 Thoreau's delicious food twice. I don't think I've had better anywhere in the Boston area. They do everything phenomenally well."

  • "80 Thoreau remains a favorite restaurant for us: a varied menu, which changes with the seasons; inventive pairings; and big flavors. Definitely a crowd pleaser."
    Dined on 6/21/2014
  • "Food is consistently wonderful here, as is the service. We dine here regularly so it would be nice if the menu changed a bit more frequently, but the food and drinks are always excellent. We loved the new soft shell crab appetizer! Duck confit is always perfect too!"

  • "80 Thoreau was nice enough to have donated a dinner for 4, with wine, to a silent auction for a local charity. Knowing from past experience dining with them how good the food and service were, we were delighted to have made the successful bid. Though the service and food have always been exceptional, this time the service was even better. They asked what kind of wine we enjoyed and then selected for us a white wine from the Gavi region of Italy that was excellent and went well with the meals selected by all four of us. As always with them, the food was exceptional and the extra care they took to make the experience enjoyable made it especially so."

  • "Had another perfect meal at 80 Thoreau. Service was timely but not pushy even though we were an early seating on a Friday evening. The always-changing menu gives us reason to return regularly."

  • "Watch the MBTA Fitchberg line trains roll in through the windows of this second story restaurant located over the old train station. Very much enjoyed the meal and wine selection. The menu is limited, but varied and of high quality and beautifully presented. Service was excellent. Noise level moderate enough to allow for easy and enjoyable conversation."

  • "Our family was staying in concord for a wedding, so we figured we'd try this place. We were really pleased with the whole experience! The food was great. I had a wild salmon fillet with bacon-braised flageoli and grilled escarole. The whole plate came together really well. I've stopped getting salmon at restaurants cuz it's usually overcooked and disappointing but our server recommended this and I'm glad I got it. My husband's scallops were amazing too (can't really go wrong with seafood in this town), though his entire plate (beets, frisée salad?) wasn't as cohesive. Sis-in-law had lamb chop. It too was tasty, with mint chutney and a nut relish on top. All the food was well executed if not super creative. Flavors were confident. Good find!"

  • "We chose this restaurant on a lovely warm evening to celebrate our 47th wedding anniversary. Our drinks (Mojito and Tom Collins) were expertly made with ample "punch." We have different appetizers and shared. Her veal entrée was a lovely and delicious presentation. My swordfish entrée was equally delightful...an ample portion, with suitable accompaniments and without the cutesy/fussy/pretentiousness/distracting details in presentation or flavors sometime found in upscale restaurants. Bravo! Just perfect! For desert we walked next door and had ice cream cones at the neighboring ice cream shop - in spite of a very enticing desert menu."

  • "The food was delicious. We had a soup, charcuterie, rabbit ragu, lamb chop. All of the dishes were great. We cleaned out the plates. There were some inventive things in almost all the plates. The deserts we had were chocolate truffle cake which was a little dry and should have been warmed. The lemon custard was worth trying but did not have any pop to it. I would recommend this restaurant and ask friends to ask for more ice cream in the deserts because that was very good."
    Dined on 6/13/2014
  • "The menu is somewhat limited. We decided to skip the appetizer course (nothing really stood out on the menu for us). For the main dishes we had veal (excellent) and papadelle with a rabbit ragu. The deserts - a marscapone mousse and an ice cream mint julep were both excellent."

  • "I went with an old friend and we just loved catching up with fabulous drinks, wonderful food, and just superb attention. I have been pining for the house special Cosmo..... The cauliflower soup, by the way, is a real find!"

  • "80 Thoreau has matured. The servers seem less anxious, the menu less pretentious, the portions more honest. You leave full. The ingredients are trying less hard. The prices are fair for what you get. And the burger is to die for. Hard to get a table for a reason. Often compared Bondir will be a flash in the pan with their silly ingredient combinations, trendy foods, microscopic portions, and arrogant servers. I was worried initially that 80 Thoreau was the same -- a trendy place too bent on bending tradition. But 80 Thoreau is standing the test of time because they have become a little more traditional, but still interesting, because weird for weird's sake eventually runs out of followers. Thank goodness we have 80 Thoreau in Concord!"

  • "The food is very good but there was a long wait between courses the two past times I ate at the restaurant with no staff explanation."
    Dined on 6/7/2014
  • "Healthy entrees....attractively served A number of gluten free options and others that can be altered. Service was attentive but not overly solicitous."

  • "What an absolute delight! We had extremely high expectations due to high recommendation from friends, and 80 Thoreau stood up to these reviews - even surpassed. We started the meal with the special beer-braised pork dumplings - absurdly rich and delicious. My husband enjoyed the lamb and I, the veal, but it was not only the perfectly-cooked meats, but the sides and sauces that were so impressive. The waiter was attentive without being intrusive and the entire staff seemed to care that our experience was top-notch. We will most certainly be back!"

  • "At 80 Thoreau you will walk away thinking you have dined at one of the best restaurants in Boston - we find it better than the best restaurants in Boston, located conveniently in the metrowest suburbs with parking. The food is impeccable, with fresh, locally sourced, in season dishes. We have never had a disappointing dish, no matter what the season. The staff is attentive and exceptional. It is a great location for a special occasion celebration, or just a meal out, but make your reservation early as it's a popular location any night of the week!"

  • "Appetizer, main course and dessert were top notch."

  • "Food was very well prepared using fresh, local ingredients. Menu is pretty limited, though. Makes it a bit hard if you have any dietary restrictions. I had a wonderful asparagus soup and the sole for an entree, both were fabulous. Also had a chocolate cake for dessert that was extremely dry, luckily it had some chocolate sauce on it to help moisten it, not sure I would order that again."
    Dined on 6/4/2014
  • "Service was impeccable. Desserts were wonderful. Wine was overpriced. The meal, well....the sole was undercooked (pink in the middle), and the pea pod stems were stringy and practically inedible. Not a memorable dish. The restaurant does indeed try hard to be excellent; hopefully this was an exception and our next visit there will make up for it."

  • "There have been several attempts at this location. But 80 Thoreau has it right, nice bustle, good bar vibe, and excellent food. Go. "

  • "This place has an amazingly unique menu which the chef cooks perfectly, all the flavors work well together. I got the lamb chop and my girlfriend got the rabbit ragu. Both were amazing. I would highly recommend this to anyone. "

  • "I feel this is the best restaurant in Metrowest. It might even be my favorite in all of Boston too. Nothing is as you would expect. Every morsel is enjoyable and filled with flavor and texture. This is the kind of experience where you literally clean each plate. My grilled swordfish was the juiciest, most flavorful /perfectly cooked and seasoned piece of fish I've ever had. Try all the appetizers. Sit back relax and let your server wow you with each plate. Truly amazing. This was my fifth visit I highly recommend. "

  • "We went to celebrate a birthday and it was truly perfect. Our dinners were prepared with creative care, they were delicious, and just the right portion. The wine selection is very good, although priced high. Dessert was as good as the main course and the wait staff were very nice and attentive. We have already recommended 80 Thoreau to our friends and plan to return. "

  • "I took my mom here for a belated mother's day dinner. Though she's lived in the area for 40 years she'd never eaten at - or heard of - 80 Thoreau. It's one of my favorite places to dine, and she looks forward to going there again, too. She was really impressed by the menu, and loved being able to watch the commuter rail. She thought the food was amazing; it was light, and the servings were just the right size. I cajoled her into trying the asparagus ice cream dessert, and she was so glass I did. "I didn't think that would work, but wow!" I've never had anything there that I didn't like."

  • "We went to 80 Thoreau for their special asparagus menu. The food was inventive: savory panna cotta appetizer , good asparagus soup, black pepper cake with asparagus ice cream for dessert. However the main dish was only ordinary. The arctic char was properly cooked but was overwhelmed by a heavy sauce and too much salt , which drowned out the tasty asparagus side. The waiter was conscientious and the service was good. But although the $45 prix fixe was reasonable for an interesting menu, the cost of drinks and post dinner coffee and tea was high."

  • "We love this place and have been there many times. This visit we ordered the themed menu (asparagus dinner) and were not disappointed. Service is friendly and attentive without being intrusive. My only disappointment was when we asked for non- alcoholic drink options, our servers were at a loss. Some enthusiastic suggestions would be appreciated, e.g., lime soda, cider, etc."

  • "The asparagus menu was creative and tasty. Only wish there were more spears on the plates. The asparagus soup was especially superb with the duxelles and brioche croutons that had an amazing texture. Hope you will continue to highlight Barrett's Mills Farm, our local resource. Need to add more California Chardonnays to the list (where did the Neyers go ?)."

  • "We decided to have dinner at 80 Thoreau based on the excellent reviews. It was a wonderful experience and exceeded our expectations. The service was excellent but the food was the high point. It is on our list for a repeat visit."

  • "Food was outstanding. It has been great every time we have eaten at 80 Thoreau. Especially for older people it is noisy when it is crowded. It was much better as people left."
    Dined on 5/23/2014
  • "I have dined here many times . It is consistently very good. My husband, daughter and I all agree, however, that 80 Thoreau should change its menu more often. It is more or less always the same, with minor variations. As a result, we go much less often than we would. Also, I suggest some good Australian wines to be added to the already very good wine list."
