Along with friends, my wife and I have taken dozens of pre-theater dinners at 701, not one less than delicious, with all the other virtues that go with a splendid restaurant--great service, beautiful ambience, quiet atmosphere. This is all the more remarkable because a 'pre-theater' meal could easily be seen as requiring less attention because of time pressure, but every dish, year after year, has been close to perfection, and the service always no less attentive.

We ate early because one of our party had a plane to catch. 3 of us ordered from the pre-theater menu. The roasted chicken was a bit bland but the skate and pasta dishes were very good.

This is a great space, muted spare décor, well prepared high quality food without being trendy or "precious." Perhaps a bit too much emphasis on Asian fusion for my taste but popular with fellow diners. The wines were fine and not hugely marked up and the cocktails were original and well made. The downside was our overly familiar, flippant, off-hand and erratic waitress. Despite knowing that we wanted the theater menu because we had tight time limits she failed to take our orders without prompting, disappeared for longish periods to joke with other tables. We had to leave our desserts (and wine) unfinished. An otherwise pleasant experience marred by an unprofessional waitress.

I had not eaten at 701 in years so I wasn't sure if the food would still be good but it was better than ever. I was with a party of 5 and we all agreed that the food, drinks and service were topnotch. 701 is a bit pricey but for special occasions, it's well worth it.

Our discerning out-of-town guest said it best when he declared his wild boar ragout pasta dish "outstanding". We have a few go-to restaurants in Northern Virginia for special occasions or when we feel like making dinner special. 2941 is on that short list. At this dinner the service was impeccable and the assistance we received when asking for some menu modifications was polite and precise. We all ordered different appetizers, main courses and desserts and loved every one. The French and Spanish wines we drank worked beautifully with the cuisine and were fairly priced. And an ending of cheese and port capped a great evening. Quality food, wine and service in a beautiful dining setting. That's the ticket!

We love 701 as a great place to dine and talk before heading up to Shakespeare. Live excellent piano music is the perfect accompaniment to 701's courteous and friendly ambiance and consistently fine service. From maître d' to table. 701 is perfect for our pre-theatre needs, but it would be great for business dinners as well. Give it a try.

Was pleasantly surprised how awesome the whole experience was. Started off with an awesome Tondonia Red. Bread n butter came swiftly, warm, n fresh. My better half had the Crab Salad n I had the Florida Prawns. Both were awesome! I prefer a bit more salt n the Prawns had a bit of bacon in it so it was tasty-good n cooked to perfection. The Crab Salad was more of a cold dish but was still awesome and light on the salty additives, she loved it. The main course I had the Beef Loin and my girl had the Lobster. The beef loin and lobster were cooked as requested, awesomely. The beef came with tasty swiss chard and the lobster came with tasty brussel sprouts. Chocolate Ignot n Banana Mousse capped off an awesome night of food. Service was great!

First and only visit. After a great diner at Corduroy the night before, 701 was a huge disappointment, especially considering prices were only slightly lower at 701. Rough service - an unsmiling waiter and the waiter serving the next table bumped my chair 3x even though table spacing was adequate. Half our party was unhappy with their meal. The piano and guitar was a nice touch, but amplification of the guitar needed to come down a few notches. Conversation over the music was strained. There are much better choices in DC at $75 per person.

Three of us dined at 701 on Halloween, and let's just say we were underwhelmed. My friends ordered duck pasta, which was oddly bitter; I sent back the skate, which was overcooked and mushy. Indeed, I'm not convinced it was actually skate--it had more the texture of tilapia (a much less expensive fish). The waiter was very good natured about replacing the fish was squash ravioli, probably the best dish of the three (although hardly superlative). Later I said privately to the waiter that they badly need a new chef, especially given the prices, and he apologized, claiming they were overwhelmed because of Halloween. Sorry: restaurants are supposed to anticipate contingencies, such as holiday crowds.

This may have been because our party of seven arrived to an almost empty restaurant at 8:30 on a Wednesday night. Am sure that had we eaten at a more normal dining hour, our experience would have been that much better. Our guest who had a crab meat appetizer with hearts of palm sorbet raved about it. The roasted duck breast, on the other hand, was quite tough and was seriously overwhelmed by a clove-like spice. The wine and table service were excellent. Even though this dinner was not perfection, it was very good and the fact that the restaurant accommodated us so graciously at an awkward hour made us determined to return.

Met friends for dinner here and, as always, found it very satisfactory. Everyone loved their choices: potato soup w mussels, beet salad, octopus, poached lobster, and others I have forgotten. It was a Monday, so rather quiet. The service was slightly inattentive, but not annoyingly so. It is always a good choice, especially if your group has a variety of tastes. There are plenty of different selections on the menu to make most people more than happy I would recommend this choice to anyone seeking good food, a slightly formal ambiance and time to enjoy it.

We were a party of four, all friends for many years, wanting to share good food in an environment with not too many decibels. 701 was the right place for us. The seating was very comfortable, not too close to other tables, and it was very easy to carry on conversations. The service was friendly, and informative, with a waiter with a great sense of humor. We all found dishes to our liking with 2 of us ordering the monkfish which was excellent. The waiter gave us a few extras, including a glass of limoncello at the end. Will definitely go back.

The service and ambiance at 701 continues to be outstanding. however the food was slightly disappointing this time around. Not as exciting to the palate as it generally is - I had the salmon with pomegranate seeds, etc. They need to make sure they do not fall into a standard fare type of rut...

701 is a wonderful place to dine. Delicious food, excellent wines, a great band, and attentive, caring service. What I enjoyed in particular was the non-utilization of cloying sauce. A lot of restaurants rely heavily on saucing everything. Not here. I enjoyed the reductions immensely. The moderately priced Zinfandel we had was outstanding. The lamb was succulent. Desserts to die for. Very much worth the price.

Don't miss the 701 Restaurant. My group had the best meal that any of us have had in ages. The potato-lemongrass soup was divine and we asked for a copy of the recipe. The fish was fresh and light, and we received a very good wine recommendation (Pinot Noir). I can't wait to go back.

really wonderful food, delightful fall cocktail. brought a visitor from out of town and perfect DC place to entertain. only complaints were the host trying to seat us by both the waiter station and 2 tables of 20+ ("this is a low traffick area" he said) despite 3-4 free tables for two, one of which we took. also, the appetizer came before cocktails. but fish was wonderful and beet salad just great

I dined at 701 restaurant for the second time recently, after having a memorably excellent meal the first time. 701 did not disappoint, and my dining companion - who had not been to 701 before - was highly impressed. Every course was delicious, with rich and delicate flavors. I particularly recommend the monkfish main course, which was a delight to the palate. The restaurant staff were all excellent, and made every effort to give us a great dining experience. We felt very well taken care of, and will happily return.

One of the best things about 701, compared to most restaurants in Penn Quarter, is its noise level--subdued. One can eat and converse, a rarity in DC these days. The tables are nicely spaced, the menu manageable but varied enough to cater to a number of different tastes, and the bread is terrific! Service is professional. I've been coming here for years because I can count on it.
