  • Ever a good choice in Penn Quarter

Met friends for dinner here and, as always, found it very satisfactory. Everyone loved their choices: potato soup w mussels, beet salad, octopus, poached lobster, and others I have forgotten. It was a Monday, so rather quiet. The service was slightly inattentive, but not annoyingly so. It is always a good choice, especially if your group has a variety of tastes. There are plenty of different selections on the menu to make most people more than happy I would recommend this choice to anyone seeking good food, a slightly formal ambiance and time to enjoy it.

We were a party of four, all friends for many years, wanting to share good food in an environment with not too many decibels. 701 was the right place for us. The seating was very comfortable, not too close to other tables, and it was very easy to carry on conversations. The service was friendly, and informative, with a waiter with a great sense of humor. We all found dishes to our liking with 2 of us ordering the monkfish which was excellent. The waiter gave us a few extras, including a glass of limoncello at the end. Will definitely go back.

Our first visit since the start of fall and some wonderful new menu delights. The potato with lemongrass soup was particularly nice. As always, the service was spot on. Petra is a pro. Attending to every need and an expert on the menu. We thoroughly enjoy the food, and Petra's outstanding service is why we keep coming back.

The service and ambiance at 701 continues to be outstanding. however the food was slightly disappointing this time around. Not as exciting to the palate as it generally is - I had the salmon with pomegranate seeds, etc. They need to make sure they do not fall into a standard fare type of rut...

701 is a wonderful place to dine. Delicious food, excellent wines, a great band, and attentive, caring service. What I enjoyed in particular was the non-utilization of cloying sauce. A lot of restaurants rely heavily on saucing everything. Not here. I enjoyed the reductions immensely. The moderately priced Zinfandel we had was outstanding. The lamb was succulent. Desserts to die for. Very much worth the price.

Don't miss the 701 Restaurant. My group had the best meal that any of us have had in ages. The potato-lemongrass soup was divine and we asked for a copy of the recipe. The fish was fresh and light, and we received a very good wine recommendation (Pinot Noir). I can't wait to go back.

really wonderful food, delightful fall cocktail. brought a visitor from out of town and perfect DC place to entertain. only complaints were the host trying to seat us by both the waiter station and 2 tables of 20+ ("this is a low traffick area" he said) despite 3-4 free tables for two, one of which we took. also, the appetizer came before cocktails. but fish was wonderful and beet salad just great

I dined at 701 restaurant for the second time recently, after having a memorably excellent meal the first time. 701 did not disappoint, and my dining companion - who had not been to 701 before - was highly impressed. Every course was delicious, with rich and delicate flavors. I particularly recommend the monkfish main course, which was a delight to the palate. The restaurant staff were all excellent, and made every effort to give us a great dining experience. We felt very well taken care of, and will happily return.

This is the third time we have dined at 701 since August, and we would be here much more if we didn't live in Baltimore! My husband and I are New Yorkers, born and bred. Needless to say we are accustomed to fine dining. Our meals at 701 have been a delight. No dry ice, mists or foams, and no food fads, just delicious well-made dishes. We'll be back again.

As always, a very pleasant experience ---- good food (oysters, skate and beet salad were fabulous). Service wasn't bad, but very slow after bringing meals. We were not in a hurry and I think they may have realized that, but it took forever for the checks. In most cases this would have been a problem. Waitress did provide good info. about a new item and was very pleasant.

One of the best things about 701, compared to most restaurants in Penn Quarter, is its noise level--subdued. One can eat and converse, a rarity in DC these days. The tables are nicely spaced, the menu manageable but varied enough to cater to a number of different tastes, and the bread is terrific! Service is professional. I've been coming here for years because I can count on it.

Our return visit was with friends from New York (and we know how pampered those palates are) and we all loved our dinner. My husband had the roast chicken and it was perfect! It takes a great chef to make good roast chicken. I had the lobster and loved it. We will definitely be back.

If you are into mediocre foo foo food this is the place for you. The portions are very small for the price and it was not even that good. I know fancier restaurants have small portions but isn't the food suppose to be very good? Our server was super pretentious too which is not cool. I do not recommend this place. There are other foo foo restaurants that you can go to that are far better.

We were 4 for dinner on a weekday night. One of our party was delayed but we waited at our table carefully attended to. Throughout service was excellent, the only slip being the common vice of today -- removing plates while some are still eating. The menu was quite varied and offered many tempting choices. However, most of the dishes just missed being outstanding -- some one or two ingredients just didn't work. E.g., bacon beignets (sounded great) with no discernible bacon flavor. Roasted chicken was delicious and perfect, but the heavy gummy gnocchi did it no favors and no celeriac in evidence. If the menu could be executed better this would be exciting food.

We jad dinner at 701 to reunite with friends we had not seen in mnay yeats. We chose the perfect setting by selecting 701. Starting with the bat, before dinner cocktails were well prepared. Our dinner choices, salmon a d halibut, were prepared perfectly. Two of us tried the fois gras which was superb! Chris, the somalier recommended different wines to accompany both our appetizers and dinners. Each selection was an excellent choice for our respective meal choices. The piano and base duo were visible to us and very sophisticated in their music choices. I woukld rate this as SINCERELY one of the nicest evenings I have ever enjoued in Washington, DC.
