Diner Reviews
  • "We are tired of the crowded and noisy 7th street options and opted instead for the reliable, professional 701 before we went to a great show at Woolly Mammoth. We had a lovely, quiet table and overall good service. The wine choices were good, and the food selection was balanced and varied. Everything we had was very good with the notable exception of the salmon, which we ordered welldone and cooked through but received underdone and soft. We complained and the waiter said that's the way it was supposed to be - so why didn't he tell us at the outset that they could not cook it to our order? Despite his objections, he removed the fish and the charge for it, which we appreciated. And we loved the jazz combo."

  • "Came here to celebrate after my sisters baby shower and at first it seemed great. Then we sat down. Service was slow - drinks took a very long time. After we ordered it took a long time for our first course to come. The beef carpaccio didn't seem quite right and the sauce they put on it was incredibly bitter. For the main dish the chicken was paired with a cheddar gnocchi- sounds delicious but it was cold and very clearly uncooked. When we inquired about it the waiter said they would bring us more, although we told them we weren't interested in more food. Instead of comping the meal as should have happened they continued as usual but took 25 minutes to bring us desserts which required no cooking and which were thoroughly underwhelming. "

  • "I started at the bar while waiting for my date and the bartender was fantastic, he made really good drinks and provided me with some very good food suggestions. While the food was good, my date's dinner selection was clearly undercooked. The restaurant corrected the issue with some direction from my date. We ordered dessert and received the bill immediately after getting our desserts. The restaurant was not busy and we had only been there about 45 minutes or so. We really felt uncomfortable with the treatment we received from the staff to the manager, but did not complain. I simply will not return."

  • "We had a show at 8 PM and the maitre'd and waiter were wonderful about accommodating us so we had plenty of time to make the curtain. The pre- theater menu offers a nice selection of options at a reasonable price and the food was delicious. We will definitely be back before another show."

  • "The menu had changed. My guest was looking forward to the lamb sandwich which is no longer offered. We settled for burgers. Both were dry, no lettuce, no tomato, just a burger on a bun with a few dried onions. Ketchup was the only condiment offered. Fries were dry. I was disappointed in the food quality."

  • "Went to the restaurant for a business luncheon. The view was lovely and the wait staff was terrific. We ordered the shrimp caesar salad as the entree. The serving was quite small for the entree. The shrimp were tasteless and the dressing was bland."

  • "Great food and service! On top of that, both senators from my home state came in!"

  • "The beef carpacio, loup de mer, beet salad, and deserts were wonderful. One of the best fish dishes I've had, with a nice light broth I couldn't get enough of."

  • "We went to 701 before a show at the Verizon Center and decided to use their vallet parking which included parking for the show as well. We were seated promptly. The service was terrific very attentive but not rushed. Even though we were going to a show we felt relaxed and had a very pleasant evening. We originally thought that the show would end at about 10PM but we didn't get out until 11:30PM. This is where 701 went above and beyond in service. I would not have been surprised to find that they had already had closed; however when we returned we found that the manager had waited for us and our car was ready to go. I highly recommend 701 for the food, ambvionce and especially the service."

  • "Incredibly attentive staff, from the hosts to the busters, and all so professional, like our expert server. We ordered from the pre-theatre menu, having the beet salad, short ribs, and an espresso mousse dessert. All were so beautifully presented. The ribs were succulent and flavorful. Nice pianist in the bar contributed to great atmosphere. We'll definitely go back."

  • "Haven't been here in a long time. I had high hopes based on recent reviews, but was rather disappointed. Arrived for late dinner on Friday, perhaps that affected the cooking as this is not a late night spot. Atmosphere is relaxing and elegant. The first bites were the stars; the pasta second and lobster entree were bland. Service was ok, but I would expect it to be more attentive given that the restaurant was mostly empty."

  • "701 is perfection! The service is impeccable. With so many options it's hard to choose so more visits are in order. Great wine list and the best octopus (appetizer) we ever had. The pork trio is unbelievable as is the lamb duo. Dessert is not to be missed either."

  • "Went here before a Wizard's game and while it was more high brow than we'd planned for game night, the food was delicious (except for dessert) and they had a great prix fix menu so it was surprisingly affordable for the meal. An added surprise was a two piece band that performed jazzy tunes. I hadn't been in many years but it was as good as I remember. Service was great; nice pace and friendly."

  • "I love having working lunch meetings here. The location is good, right by metro and walking distance to the Capital if the weather is nice. I had the steak salad which was cooked perfectly to what I had asked for and an appropriate size. The ambience was good and it was quiet enough to have our business discussion without distraction."

  • "Have been coming here for a number of years. Never disappointed. My party of two had tickets for the Shakespeare Theater up the street - a one block walk. Restaurant has valet parking that includes both! Although they have a pre-theater menu, we selected off the regular menu - New Bedford Scallops as an appetizer (superb!) and a wonderful Lamb Duo (chop and shank). Nice jazz combo in the background with a lively but quite bar scene. Restaurant crowd well dressed - large number of theater goers so the word has gotten around. Excellent choice!!"

  • "Upon entering 701 restaurant I was greeted by two male hostess that didn't pay attention to my open table request. I ask the hostess that seated my guest and I, were there any booth's available and his reply was no because it was reserved well I made a reservation and I made it quite clear on my reservation that I didn't want to be seated next to the bath room and I was, I wanted a booth, neither made it clear that a booth wouldn't be available and would it be ok be seated where they designated me to be. When I looked around it seemed the restaurant sat others in the same section based on how they were dressed which disappointed me knowing that this could be a form of discrimination. Hospitality needs fixing dramatically!"

  • "From the first toothiness of the perfect al dente black pasta, through the earthy tones of fresh water eel, and down to the sauce of reduced foie gras... How decadent does it get? My mouth was blown away with textures and umami, layers of flavor, and simply inspired buttery-ness of the foie gras... Always a fine find..."

  • "Had not been to 701 for several years (and maybe never for dinner) , and was pleasantly impressed. The food was excellent quality and nicely prepared. Very nice wine list and excellent service. And one of the few places in the Penn Quarter you can hear yourself think and talk. The restaurant has been well maintained and elegant. Highly recommended, and I am pretty picky!!"

  • "We chose to eat at 701 based off reviews online and most are pretty spot on. The food was decent, the atmosphere was great, the wine list was incredible but the price was a little high for what you get."

  • "I took my niece here for a celebratory lunch and was amazed at how good the food was. We had the butternut squash soup with the ginger fluff, the chicken and salmon. The potato cheddar gnocchi that came with the chicken melted in my mouth and the salmon was cooked perfectly. The service staff did a wonderful job of making my niece feel like she was a princess and she is still talking about the soup a week later! Well done, 701!"

  • "What strikes us about this restaurant is the high degree of profesisonalism and care exhibited__consistently. This is the hard part: consistency. Exceptional dining is rare, but to establish a standard by which such experience is repeated becomes a cultural thing. That is even rarer. &01 will remain one of our go-to venues a slong as they can keep this up. Well done."

  • "We all had a great lunch at the 701. The service was impeccable. The setting very posh. The food was outstanding. And the price at $25 for the three course fixed price menu, was a very good deal - not much more than we would spend during Restaurant Week. Great place to go for a special lunch."

  • "This isn't the same 701. After many meals ans special events at 701, this rates well at the bottom. Food and service were ho-hum. Bar was the only highlight."

  • "I have been to this restaurant many times and have always been extremely pleased. Unfortunately, my most recent visit did not meet the restaurant's normal standards. I was a member of a party of 4 for dinner. We were given a menu which still contained pre-theatre items, only to be told that those items were no longer available. I, and another person in my party had the salmon. We both agreed that it was more well done than usual but still good. One person in my party ordered the chocolate torte for dessert and was told they had run out."

  • "Placed farther from the piano, we'd have enjoyed our table of six, but we really couldn't hear each other over the piano. We recommend that 701 put tables for more than 4 far enough away to encourage cross table talking. The food was good."

  • "Saturday night at 701 did not disappoint, from snacks of duck croquettes and crispy oysters on a bed of outstanding slaw, to the octopus appetizer followed by pork 3 ways and lamb and topped off with 4 different -one-better-the-next desserts (ANY ice cream is a must try), it was a come tell diminished dinner from start to finish with a beautiful malbec to complement. Loved our dinner and we definitely return!"

  • "I had last dined at 701 Restaurant twenty years ago - when I last lived in the DC area. I had fond memories of good food and a pleasant atmosphere. I was not disappointed returning to this area and again having the opportunity to enjoy the restaurant. I and friends all had the pre-theater dinner. While the choices were limited, the items chosen by both myself and companions were delicious and right-sized. (After all, who wants to have an enormous portion, and drop off during an Oscar Wilde play.) The wine choices were extensive, and the sommelier was very helpful in assisting in the wine choice that I had narrowed to two options."

  • "I have eaten at 701 dozens of times over the years, but my most recent lunch was a whole new experience. The menu looked the same but the flavors and textures of the meal were fantastic. I understand there's a new chef, and based on this meal, he's doing a great job."

  • "My husband and I went for the first time before heading over to the Shakespeare Theatre for a show. The pre-theatre menu was very convenient and appreciated. Our original half bottle wine selection was not available, but we were offered something comparable as a replacement. The food was delicious, and the service was great. It is pricey, but nothing we weren't expecting. The menu items are unique, so if you are picky eater this might not be the place for you; however, all the flavors blend so well and make each dish taste great."

  • "I love 701. Even though it is right on the edge of penn quarter, and is literally right atop the archives metro, this place is never packed, but it should be. The decor is lovely and the bar area, while slight, had a piano player on a weekday night. The food is cutting edge in a way, but still delicious in a mainstream way. We started the "green eggs and ham", a playful version of deviled eggs. The starters were fabulous (soup and scallops). The pastas are very good, and my duck was fantastic. The dishes are fairly rich. Deserts were fine, if you see stuff on the prix fixe menu, prepare for a great meal at a fantastic price. A la carte is fairly expensive. Great selection of wines by the glass."

  • "Food was bland. Found hair baked into our bread. The most expensive bad meal we have had. Service was ok but we definitely expected more from a restaurant like this."

  • "The food: fantastic. I was curious how they'd handle the striped bass entree; there were traces of the gamy red blood line to eat around, but the meat was savory and delicate. Crispy oysters with miso and chili went perfectly with tangy slaw. The tea-infused chocolate cake with ginger ice cream was a successful combination of flavors I hadn't thought would work. Get outside your comfort zone a bit and you'll be paid dividends. The service: also fantastic. Wait staff keeps a keen eye on what's going on without being cloying. Our food and drink was brought out by half a dozen different people -- it's nice to see folks doing whatever is needed rather than sticking to their own specific territory."

  • "My husband and I went to 701 prior to a show at the National Theatre. We opted to arrive early and have access to the whole menu rather than just go with the 3 course pre-theatre special they offer. Our waiter was exceptional - just the right amount of attentiveness without being overbearing. He asked us immediately what our curtain time was and paced the meal perfectly to accommodate. Husband had the pork trio and I had the duck - both were excellent. Desert was also very good, as were appetizers/salad courses. We'll definitely be back."
