Diner Reviews
  • "Went here on a Sunday. Food was pretty good - nice selection of food and not too pricy. Would have been a much better experience except that apparently they don't wipe the seat down between patrons. I was there on a Sunday afternoon and were probably the first table of the day from what it looks like for dining. The other person in my party had white pants on and, upon standing up to leave, it was pretty clear that there were chocolate chips/frosting on the booth seat and subsequently all over her pants. Not just in one spot, but all up one leg and the other. Quite embarrassing and ruined our plans to go out after. Unfortunate that ruined such a potentially nice experience."

  • "A Friday night dinner of scallops and risotto, excellent wine list was great. Service was excellent! Worth another visit."

  • "The menu when I was there last June was good -- nice variety. This June I felt there was too much emphasis on Mexican type food. The spices and descriptions do not appeal to those of us without a great like for hot and/or mexican spiced food. I thought the addition of a few oriental dishes was a nice option."

  • "Food was good, not exciting but definitely above average. Desserts amazing! Watch your bill though. My bill was incorrect and it is always uncomfortable for the patron to have to bring that to the attention of the restaurant. I will have lunch at 5ive again."

  • "We had been to 5ive before last February and were quite pleased with the service and the food. Unfortunately this time we were not so lucky. Our waiter, who was also the bartender, seemed indifferent. When we inquired about the preparation of a mushroom dish, he muttered something about that they just change the title of the dish according to the season. So, these were not morel mushrooms? He shrugged. That lackadaisical approach seems unprofessional.. The drinks were quite weak, tasted watered down. This time there was no bread basket with an assortment of rolls. We will not be back. It is not that the food was bad--in fact, my chicken dish was excellent, but we spent a lot of money for a dinner that was pretty much so-so. "

  • "First time dining here; won't be the last. Food was exceptional. Ambiance reminded us of dining at a private country club setting."

  • "We went to Five on a weekend and there was NOBODY in the restaurant. You would think that would translate into a lot of attention from the wait staff...NOPE! We had horrible service. In fact, we sat at our table for 30 minutes after dinner with our waitress never once coming by to ask us if we want a refill of water or another drink. Luckily the food we ordered was fantastic. I rated the restaurant low due to service and prices. I ordered scallops and for $33 I got 3 scallops and about 1/4 cup of risotto. Now I am not a big eater and I almost always take 1/2 my meal home when we go out to eat because the proportions are usually HUGE. Not this time! I had to eat again when I got home because I was still hungry!!!"

  • "3/31/2014 I was a little concerned about going here due to the sketchy reviews I was seeing, but we decided to give it a chance. We made a reservation and requested a booth based upon several reviews regarding small tables near the main traffic pattern. The booths were very nice, however a little tight for 4 people. I was very impressed that not only did they read the reservation -they noted the vegetarian request and indicated which items were vegetarian as they handed us the menu. Everything we ordered was wonderful. Everyone in our party was happy with their meals. The server was competent and attentive, with us and the other patrons. The brownie turtlle pie was better than expected. Give the restaurant a visit!"

  • "My meal, "sea bass" special, was very good and dessert, a blackberry and pear cobbler was excellent. My wife's salmon was average and "dusted" with a crunchy millet which ruined the consistency. Wine list is fine. The decor is nice but way too bright for evening dining- they need to add dimmer switches. Service was very good. It was a very slow night so I can't say how they are on a busy night. I would recommend it , particularly if you are in the neighborhood and I can't say I wouldn't go back but the competition probably wins for me, particularly since it's not in my immediate neighborhood."

  • "I planned an outing for Sweeties Day with my husband and another couple. My friend and I had looked over the menu a week prior and had everything planned out. Upon arrival, we found the entire menu changed and nothing was of interest to us so we had to leave and eat elsewhere which kind of messed up our plans. I will say that the breakfast/brunch we had there the next morning was AMAZING!! If I went back to this restaurant it would be because of the wonderful breakfast spread. This completely made up for the night before."

  • "I had a business luncheon meeting at Five and it was the perfect environment. It was relaxed and conducive to having a discussion without alot of noise and interruptions. All members of the party had luncheon salads and they were very enjoyable."

  • "It's a good restaurant, and not overly crowded. The atmosphere was fitting for a simple, although a little pricey for the ambiance."

  • "Each person in our party of four ordered a different entree and we were all highly pleased with our meals, including the three different desserts. My only complaint would be with the cocktails. Not only were the glasses unimpressive, but the quantity of liquor within could not have been any less. Normally, I have two martinis before my meal. In this case, I decided not to throw my money away."

  • "Though we requested a booth, and one was available, we were not afforded the option to move. Our seats were along the main walkway, so that was not ideal. Nevertheless, the food was very good though, and our waitress was fantastic. We were also confused by the inclusion of a 20% service fee along with a separate line for a tip. If they were expecting both (I.e. 40%), they were sorely disappointed as we stopped at the service fee."

  • "We got the 5 course set Valentine's menu and enjoyed everything. The smaller portions of multiple appetizers and desserts helped us avoid getting too full and we walked out of there feeling pretty good. If anything I would say they cheaped out on the wine pairings a bit so we might have been better off just choosing our own drinks. They probably could have gotten a 4 star overall out of us if the pricing wasn't so high. Our bill was over $200 and we did not feel like we had a that level of an experience. When I spend that much at Morton's or even Fleming's, I feel like we get a lot more "wow, that was really good" type moments. So to be clear, good food, just a bit overpriced."

  • "This was the most amazing experience. Dinner was fantastic - the entire evening was a great success. The only thing I might recommend is offering valet parking on special occassions as the parking is somewhat far away from the door."

  • "This was our second visit First visit NYE we a a large comfy booth. When I made reservations in January on Open Table I mentioned we were making it a valentines get away. 2 things the small tables for two ( this is where were set this time) are kind of cramped. The lady next to me kept hitting the back of my chair. 2nd comment- 22 % service charge is a Tip. We actually tipped twice. It's listed as a service charge at the bottom if menu but never calls it a tip or that it applies to the server. We are fairly new "foodies" & never been disappointed with the menu. My BLD breakfast burger the next morning for breakfast was an amazing dish as well. Next time I'll ask for larger table not in the aisle. Still a wonderful experience in dining."

  • "We had heard wonderful things about 5ive, as well as reading reviews on Open Table. The meal was one of the best we have had. My calamari was perfect as was my mushroom-stuffed chicken breast. I give everything a rave review. My husband had ahi tuna and he iss quite fussy. He loved it. Our dessert, some kind of turle/chocolate/mousse creation stole the show. Our server, Matt, was wonderful!"

  • "It was a very good meal and with very few customers on a Wednesday night, we got outstanding service. Runs on the expensive side, but well done food and a good selection."

  • "We went to 5ive on Christmas day. The staff was very attentive and food was very good. This more than your typical hotel restaurant. There were some very thoughtful, tasty dishes on the menu. Everyone in our party enjoyed the service and the meal."

  • "Booked last minute in opentable as I did not know I was going to be in Michigan for New Year's Eve . Was unaware it was a $60 a plate Prix Fare meal. Not a big deal in the scheme if things. Sat at a table for two that was obviously placed in the traffic area. We ordered the Filet dinners one Medium Well and one Medium rare. We had the 8:30 sitting so we were starved . Both steaks came medium rare. The bill with 20% gratuity and a $47 bottle of wine came to $232.00. I have no problem paying for a fine meal. This just wasn't a $232 dinner we had."

  • "Special New Year's Eve menu was special. I had the scallops and my wife enjoyed the surf and turf. Note that the service of 20% was automatically added to the bill. Overall a very enjoyable evening. We brought another couple with us for their first visit and they expressed that they were very pleased."

  • "The fixed price menu for New Year's Eve was excellent. The entree choices were varied enough to please everyone, and the trio of appetizers and desserts were very creative and tasty. Even the kids menu was raised to a new level. We had a great time, with excellent service and delicious food."

  • "What pleasant surprise! NYE is always a hectic scene when dining out, but dinner at 5ive was fantastic. Food (fixed prix menu)was prepared well and my husband declared the Marrow Crusted Filet Mignon one of the best steaks he's ever eaten. My vegetarian with chèvre was amazing. From the champagne toast to the delicious dessert trio one of the best New Year's ever."

  • "Enjoyed a nice dinner with my wife on her birthday. The restaurant had a hotel feel to it., especially the tables (no table clothes) and decor. The lighting was very bright too. This restaurant has much potential for being a great local place to eat, but not there yet. However, we will continue to try it occasionally and see how/if it improves."

  • "The 5ive Restaurant, set within the spacious and beautiful surroundings of the St. John's Inn and golf course, is an excellent hotel option for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Make sure you reserve a table in advance though, as the place can fill up quickly - especially when a large group is staying at The Inn."

  • "We really enjoyed this find as it is not a chain, or the regular fair. 5ive has a unique character that allows you to get away without going far and provides a nice setting for a group of friends."

  • "Went here for a Sunday Brunch. Also was a 1000 points which usually means they are slow. Yes they were. A very nice place and good service. Different brunch menu. We will return someday."

  • "We had a soup there that was so delicious, it was velvet corn soup, topped w/ a little herbed oil."

  • "Limited menu but very well done. Enjoyed a few little surprises, like perfectly done flash fried kale (with the pork sampler), fresh spring rolls of pickled julienne carrots wrapped in rice paper (that complemented the salmon perfectly), and sliced hearts of palm in the house salad. The portions did not look very large but I left quite full. The restaurant seemed a bit stuffy at first but the adjacent bar had a lively crowd which I liked."

  • "Open Table offered us a 4:30pm reservation which worked out well after a theater matinee in Ann Arbor. However, the restaurant was not ready for us at 4:30! Dinner menu and Specials not available for announcement until 5pm....not even fully staffed! We wanted to sit outside but air conditioner unit was so loud, we couldn't talk so back inside we went. The bottle of wine we ordered was not available. Our waitress said there probably was a suitable replacement in the basement/cellar, but she wasn't allowed down there. We are not old coots looking for the early bird special. We are experienced diners with wine/ food knowledge. Because the food and presentation was quite nice, I would consider returning...but not for early Sunday dinner!"

  • "When we arrived, there was no hostess at the stand and we waited a few minutes before she showed up. The restaurant was not busy other than a few couples eating and a large group. We sat down and waited another 5 mins for our waitress to show up. After our drinks arrived, we ordered our appetizers, salads and entree. They all came out in a timely fashion. After the salads came out, we both finished our drinks. When the entree came out, portions are a bit small, for the prices. We also asked for refills on our drinks. Seeing that the place was not busy, we expected our drinks to come quickly. Trying not to eat all my food on my plate before my drink came, 10 mins later our drinks arrive and we were near complete on our meal."

  • "Our family enjoyed a wonderful dinner for my daughter's 16th birthday. The menu did not have much for my 10 year old to choose from but my daughter is a "Pescetarian" so that's why we chose it was for the fish selections. Anyway the service was fantastic and the food was really good. The only drawback was the 20% service fee which confused me a bit because they also asked for a tip on the receipt. I'm used to seeing the standard "gratuity" but not the service fee. In the end, everyone was happy! That's all that matters."
